EBay selling Should you pay Tax?
Online auctions such as eBay, car boot sales and adverts all provide opportunities for selling and making a little money in these recession hit times. But have you ever stopped to wonder whether you should be paying tax on your sales? Did you know that H M Revenue & Customs targeted online selling in 2012 and will be contacting people that they feel have been trading.
Are you trading? Individuals who sell a few personal items to raise cash or clear out their loft
are not trading. But if you are making a living out of selling on the internet you certainly are trading and should be paying tax. HMRC gives specific guidance on their e-trader campaign at HMRC.gov.uk/campaigns/emarket. htm. If you are buying goods to sell you probably are trading so analyse your own personal position to reach a decision on this.
HMRC Campaign In 2012 HMRC ran a campaign to target people who were trading on the internet. This was called the e-Markets Disclosure Facility. Although the eMDF closed in June you can, if you have arrears of tax reduce your penalties by making a Voluntary Disclosure to HMRC.
Selling personal goods If you are disposing personal possessions including furniture, crockery, china, silverware etc this will not normally be classed as trading. There are separate rules relating to this type of disposal. Technically they are called chattels and as such are liable to capital gains tax. Again there is an HMRC helpsheet which can give guidance on this matter.

Peter Tarren For business planning and tax advice call Peter on: 01609 779400 or email him at: p.tarren@euraaudituk.com or drop in at: 87 South Parade Northallerton
Are you a collector? Similarly a collector who is now looking to dispose of items or if you are selling goods acquired as a hobby you would not normally be classed as trading so this would not be liable to income tax.
Claiming expenses If you do decide that you are trading it is important to reduce your taxable profit as much as possible. The money you receive on eBay is not your profit as firstly you need to include all the expenses from eBay, PayPal etc that you have been charged. You can then deduct the cost of the item which you have sold and if you do not have any record of the acquisition cost then it would be acceptable to estimate the cost of the sale item. After that, there will be any other costs of postage, bank charges etc including all the usual costs of running a business. Once all these have been taken into account you will then arrive at the net profit from your trading business. As you can see you need careful analysis to decide whether your own personal circumstances mean that you are trading or not. There are many resources available on the Inland Revenue website and it you wish to discuss this with me I will be more than happy to go through your personal situation with you.

A Passion For Fashion!
Clothing Boutique, Edit, opened in December 2012 and has just recently begun stocking their brand new Autumn clothing range.
Owner Clara tells us more, “After having worked for NEXT for 6 years and managing for 3, I then moved on to a local ladies fashions shop in Northallerton. I managed that for 3 years and then I felt it was time to bring something new to the ladies of the area, so EDIT was born! I had often struggled to find unique but reasonably priced fashion and so I felt that EDIT would fit that gap in the market. We cover ladies of all ages and sizes by providing sizes from 6-20 and age groups from 15-60+. We know girls like to shop with their mums, grans, nieces ,aunties and daughters but still find something to suit them whatever your age or style. To complete the look we have shoes from sizes 4-8, and, as we can’t leave you un-accessorized, we sell a selection of bags, jewellery and lots more too! All that’s left is to say we hope to see you all soon, even if its just to have a nosey, we are a very friendly team and love to chat and we are always willing to help. Whether you can’t find the fish and chip shop and need to know where it is or if you are wanting an outfit for an occasion! We hope to see you all soon!” ............................................................................................................................................................................. We use crystals to complement our sessions, all these skills we learnt from a lovely lady“Heidi Fawkes”our Reiki Master Teacher. Jan will use a crystal pendent to “read” your chakras this will further guide us on particular areas of interest.
Reiki helps Mark on a daily basis to deal with stress, find relaxation, and the ability to rest and to maintain balance in mind. I firmly believe that Reiki and the spirituality of it entering my life and heart help me deal with a former addiction and release alcohol from my life!

Dog Grooming, Day Care & Hydrotherapy The year 2008 is remembered by all as the Year of Financial Crisis. It was also the year that Rebecca established her company Just For Dogs, in the business of dog grooming services. What a year to venture into business, yet Rebecca had a business plan founded on a principle of delivering a service of quality, and that such quality be monitored and maintained on a daily and consistent basis. Despite the doom and gloom reports of 2008 and the ensuing years to date, Rebecca has cautiously expanded and consolidated the business, and has, within the last year, included the addition of dog day care services. Rebecca has now taken on additional adjoining premises and invested further monies into the setting up of a Canine Hydrotherapy Centre to provide a fully comprehensive service in Hydrotherapy Treatment for dogs and dog leisure sessions. In doing this, Rebecca, has created further job opportunities. The specialist Hydrotherapy Pool measure 4.45m (14’ 7”) in length by 2.29m (7’6”) width and 1.2m (4’0”) deep and is digitally controlled

September garden tips Early September is the time when there is an abundance of fruit and vegetables in the garden. It can be a problem wondering what to do with all your produce but now you need to think ahead to the winter. Try freezing the best young vegetables; don’t wait for them to become seedy or tough before you do something. • Your potatoes should be dug up by now or they will be nibbled by keeled slugs and spoilt. • Store them in hessian sacks in a cool, dark frost free place. If you don’t have Hessian sacks use paper potato sacks from the chip shop, they will do quite nicely. • Sweet corn is ripening now but don’t pick until the tassels are brown and dry. Whilst the cobs are still on the plant, peel back some of the green husk and gently squeeze a single corn seed between your finger nails and look at the colour of the liquid that comes out. It should be milky when the cob is ripe. • Autumn fruiting raspberries are coming steadily now and I can’t recommend them too highly. You will pick a bowl full three times a week from a small patch up until the first frost.
Sweet corn is nearly there, but don’t pick them too soon!
• If you don’t have any but have space then buy
some bare rooted ones from a specialist grower to plant between November and March. We put eight plants in a year past March and they have filled a bed 10ft x 3ft. • Keep picking beans, the more you pick, the more you get. Some varieties like Borlotta and many French Beans can be left to dry on the plant and the seeds saved to eat as pulses in

winter stews. British Runner Bean seeds tend to be a bit tough and don’t soften and cook as well as their foreign cousins. • Save some seeds for next year, store in a cool dry place and they will romp away when you sow them.
Collecting seeds
Annual flowers like sweet peas can be kept going by constantly picking the flowers and removing any that are going to seed. This is called ‘Dead Heading’. Once again you can allow some to set seed which will keep to sow next year. Collect the seeds on a dry day and finish off drying in cool, dry place.
September is great for harvesting your veggies
• Start pulling up your carrots as soon as they’re big enough to eat. It’s best to harvest them in the evening to avoid attracting carrot fly. Late-sown carrots must be lifted by October to be stored over the winter. • Store in a paper bag so they can breathe and keep in a cool place until next year. • Onions need to be dried in an airy place until the leaves are yellow and crisp, when you take off all the roots and the dirty outer layers so they will store well. String them up in ropes of up to ten or put a few in net sacks. They need air circulation during storage in a cool place.
Finally keep a look out for caterpillars on your cabbages and sprouts. Pick them off and put out for the birds to eat - yum!
