The Addictive Fitbit Want to make sure you’re completing your 10,000 steps a day, or looking to improve your training? An activity tracker can help. The FitBit is probably the best known brand on the market, with several models to choose from: The entry level Zip, at around £50, tracks your steps, distance walked and calories burned. “So it’s a fancy pedometer then?” I hear you ask. Well, yes, basically, but it’s more responsive and you can sync it to your computer or smartphone to see your activity presented as a graph. This makes it much easier to monitor your activity levels over time and track your progress.
The Zip also acts as a watch, and there are various other extras, such as the ability to log your food intake. Feel like you’re getting your full eight hours of sleep, but still feel tired? You might want to opt for One or Flex, which track your sleep as well as your activity. They also have silent alarms, to wake you up, but not your partner. One clips onto your clothing, while Flex is worn like a watch. There are some differences in what they offer – Flex doesn’t have a clock, for example. Charge is similar to Flex, in that you wear it like a watch, but it comes with some added extras, such as a clock. If your phone is nearby and it rings, the caller ID will come up on the Charge display. It also has a better battery life, of up to 10 days.

Charge HR is designed for people who work out regularly, as it can recognise different exercises, and has an automatic heart-rate monitor to help maximise your training. Top of the range is Surge, at around £200. It’s been designed for people who are really serious about their sports performance, and want to monitor every aspect of their training. For instance, you can track the route you’re running using GPS. You can also control music and read texts that come through to your smartphone. So which one to go for? Well Zip is a great choice if you just want to check whether...
you’re walking those recommended 10,000 steps a day. If you cycle, run, or enjoy another sport, you’ll want to opt for a more advanced model. Now, a warning… It is possible to get ever so slightly obsessed with the FitBit. You can easily find yourself checking it hundreds of times a day, which can distract you from real life, and you can find yourself pushing ever harder, unnecessarily. On the positive side, it does encourage you to increase your activity levels and build up your fitness. Like so much in life, the key is moderation. Tempted? Head to: www.fitbit.com By Kate Duggan

A year old & going strong! Daisy Doodle is amazingly almost a year old. We spoke to owner Michelle about this achievement and what makes Daisy Doodle tick, “After taking a huge risk and leaving a well paid, but frustrating, career in probation, I was understandably nervous about setting up the shop. I can honestly say though that I have never looked back, as it’s the best move I made! I love the variety of people I’ve had the privilege of meeting, many of whom keep returning and have become friends! Customers include individuals to families, community groups such as Brownies, Guides, Scouts, Schools, work groups, baby & toddler groups, WI groups, Hen parties, carers and charges, hospice, NSPCC, carnivals, NCT groups and birthday parties. We run regular adults evenings too, these are very relaxed and you can bring a bottle.” The business has gone from strength to strength and this is highlighted by the fact that the types of pots to paint has increased from 45 to 130. Michelle is also very proud of the large number

Lovely Katie (pictured) and mum Carol have become friends and visit regularly creating fabulous pots to take home or give as memorable personal gifts for their loved ones. I have a range of paints, chrystal, stoneware, crackle and fairy dust glazes to get creative with. We also have silkscreens, soft clay, tracing and stencils. Our friendly staff are always on hand to offer advice and help.” To celebrate the anniversary we have a competition to win freebies at Daisy Doodle. Bedale High gets new acting headteacher Bedale High School has a new acting headteacher after Mick Jolley, the school’s headteacher for the last three years, has left his post to recover from ill health Mr Jolley has decided that it is important for him to concentrate on regaining his health and therefore it is with regret that he has said farewell to the school. The school’s governing body has expressed its sorrow to lose such an effective leader of the school, and has thanked Mr Jolley for all his hard work over the past three years and wishes him all the very best. Sian Rees, who has been the school’s associate headteacher to support Mr Jolley, will now have full responsibility for leading the school as Acting Head Teacher while the Board of Governors begins the process to appoint Mr Jolley’s successor. “Mr Jolley leaves the school in a very much better state than when he

joined us,” said Gerry Price Bedale High school’s Chair of Governors. “Our students’ progress and achievements now compare favourably with any local school with a non-selective intake.
“Naturally we will be seeking advice from North Yorkshire County Council on how best to proceed and we hope to resolve the long term leadership of the school well before the end of this term.”
“Some time ago we appointed Mrs Rees to work alongside Mr Jolley and to ensure that our improvement programme did not falter when he was unable to be in school. She will now have full responsibility for leading the school as Acting Head Teacher while the Board of Governors begins the process to appoint Mr Jolley’s successor.”
“We wish to thank Mr Jolley for his committed and highly effective leadership over the last few years, said County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Schools. “We are giving all the necessary support to the school and we have every confidence that Mrs Rees will continue with the good work of moving the school forward.”
In a letter to parents Mr Price wrote: “Please rest assured that the school’s staff and senior team are firmly focused upon ensuring that every student gets the highest quality education and achieves to their full potential. I am sure we can count on your understanding and support as we move into the next stage of the school’s development.”
In a letter to parents Mr Jolley wrote: “As you know I have not been able to be in school as much as I would have liked to be lately. After much consideration I have decided it is important for me to concentrate on regaining my health and therefore it is with a huge feeling of regret that I am writing to say farewell. I would like to send my very best wishes to

everyone connected with the school and its community. “The community that is Bedale, underpins the school’s strength. I remember my first days with the school very well. What struck me most was the high quality of the relationships between staff and students, the willingness of students to take responsibility, care about their learning and demonstrate their ambitions for their future. Finally and significantly, the way in which all the staff, including those who support the daily running of the school, work together to provide a fantastic experience for young people. “I would like to thank you all for the support I have felt over the past three years. I wish you all the greatest of success in the future and I am certain that you will go forward from strength to strength”.

GARDEN VIEW
Lovely Lillies (& a spot of hard-pruning!)
The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.
Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over.
Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing.
Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost.
Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.
Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food
March: Spring arrives Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden.

Top 10 Garden jobs this month:
1 Protect new spring shoots from slugs 2 Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes 3 Plant summer-flowering bulbs 4 Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials 5 Top dress containers with fresh compost 6 Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed)
until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am. By Rachel Leverton
7 Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) grown for colourful winter stems
8 Weeds come back in to growth - deal with them before they get out of hand
9 Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain; remove pond heaters
10 Open the greenhouse or conservatory doors and vents on warm days

From The Skip To The Stage!
FLARE PATH
Your chance to win a couple of tickets! The Original Theatre Company & Birdsong Productions Ltd presents: Terence Rattingan’s Flare Path An epic wartime romance based on Terence Rattigan’s experiences as a tail gunner during World War II, Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews and their wives and sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return. Set in 1942 against a backdrop of heartache and quiet bravery, Flare Path tells the story of former actress Patricia, the wife of RAF pilot Teddy, as their marriage is tested to the limits by the surprise arrival of Patricia’s ex-lover and Hollywood idol Peter Kyle. An unexpected and dangerous mission over Germany puts Patricia at the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies. Combining highly charged drama with a truly authentic taste of the fear, camaraderie and passion experienced by the men and women who fought to save their country, their families and each other. With heart-tugging, human emotion, Flare Path opens an unforgettable window into a pivotal moment in our history. This major revival comes from the producers behind the hit touring production of Birdsong and stars Graham Seed as Swanson (The Archers and Yes, Prime Minister) and Charlie G Hawkins as Percy (EastEnders and Birdsong). Recommended age 12+ Flare Path is at Darlington Civic Theatre from Tuesday 12 to Saturday 16 April 2016. Masham based luthiers and designers, The Raw Guitar Co., are putting on a promotional rock show at Masham Town Hall on Saturday 7th May 2016. The star of the show will be The Junkyard Dog, a 1958 restored and customised Framus archtop guitar, that was discovered unloved and broken in two in a junk yard skip! Simon Raw takes up the story. The Junkyard Dog is a remarkable guitar. If Al Elias, our illustrious guitar builder, had not found her in a junk yard skip, I wouldn’t be writing this article today. The story of how the guitar found her way from the skip to the stage can be explained in two words: spiritual intervention! The story begins over a year ago. Bob Harrison, our acclaimed pickup guru and I had almost given up hope of finding a like-minded partner with whom we could share our love of guitar design. I’m local, Bob, however, lives in California but his soul is based in Masham! Together, we created the Raw Guitar Co. with the aim of designing guitar brands that tick all the commercial boxes; something we call “In Search Of The Lost Chord”. We were looking to find someone who was in tune with our way of working, creatively speaking. Someone who shared our vision and wanted to join us on our journey. That person was Al Elias. When Al joined us he invited me round to his workshop on Leyburn Road and proceeded to show me his wonderful guitars he had built over the past few years. You can see and hear a number of them being played at our #FurtherOnUpTheRoad Show at Masham Town Hall. As we were about to leave, something caught my eye. In the outer reaches of his workshop was an old guitar partially hidden by cans of paint and wood. “What’s that?” I asked. “It’s an old 1958 German Framus archtop I found in a junk yard skip” Al replied. “Does it play?” I enquired. “No, the neck joint is broken and she’s in desperate need of repair”. Despite her faded looks, this beautiful fräulein still had the X-factor. Al picked up the guitar, dusted her down and took her into his studio where we had a closer look. It was

not looking good. Nevertheless, we both agreed she was worth saving. From spiritual intervention to restoration. Someone, does indeed, work in mysterious ways! After three months of repair work she was good to go. However, she was missing that certain something that would transform her forever: a Bob Harrison pickup! There was only one we could fit, Bob’s astonishing Breuer single coil. The pickup had given The Junkyard Dog, as we have intuitively named her, a bark all of her own! Our test pilot, Tom Killner immediately fell in love with her when we took her down to his rehearsal studio in Rotherham to record The Junkyard Dog Sessions for our YouTube channel. The Junkyard Dog is more than a guitar. She is part of the family and a constant source of inspiration, Consequently, she has inspired us to create the #JunkyardCollection, a brand that is representative of where we stand today regarding commercial, manufacturing and marketing acumen. You can see and hear The Junkyard Dog and the #JunkyardCollection, along with other guitars and basses we have designed, at our #FurtherOnUpThe Road promo show at Masham Town Hall on Saturday 7th May 2016. On stage playing them will be the amazing Tom Killner Band with special guests Bob Angell, Gary Grainger and Mitch Laddie. If you love the blues, hard hitting rock ‘n’ roll with soul and funk overtones, this gig is not to be missed. Tickets (£8.00) can be purchased from Masham Community Office (01765 680 200) or online at wegottickets.com/event/347126. Further information on the show can be found on our Facebook page or at rawguitars.net/news_ conversation.

Young cyclists alerted to lorry danger North Yorkshire County Council’s road safety team has been working with hauliers to alert children to the dangers of cycling close to large goods vehicles (LGVs). Cyclists and pedestrians can be at risk if they are in the blind spot for drivers of LGVs or if they get too close to such a vehicle when it is turning left. With the growing interest in cycling in the wake of the Tour de France Grand Départ in North Yorkshire and the subsequent annual Tour de Yorkshire, more people are riding in traffic, and novice riders may not be aware of the dangers of riding alongside LGVs. The road safety team is advising cyclists never to ride alongside an LGV when approaching a junction, particularly when the lorry is turning left. They may be in the driver’s blind spot and may not be seen. There is also a risk because of the turning line of the vehicle’s back wheels. The rear wheels follow a sharper turning angle than the cab and can cut in across a junction or pavement where cyclists or pedestrians may be waiting. This can happen whenever a lorry turns left.

The County Council’s road safety team has taken an initiative by haulier Scania and road safety organisation Road Safety Great Britain to take a theory lesson about the dangers into schools and has added a practical session. The team worked with Scania (Thirsk) and WS Transportation of Dalton to deliver the theory and practical lessons. Thirsk School provided space in its car park to park an articulated goods vehicle. Children from Sowerby and Thirsk All Saints primary schools attended a theory session with a Scania representative before getting first-hand experience of a large goods vehicle by walking around it, sitting in the cab and riding bikes around it while having the dangers explained by Scania, WS Transportation and the road safety team. The children and their teachers were surprised by how many of them could stand beside the lorry and not be seen by the driver.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Road Safety, said: “Cyclists should stay back behind any large goods vehicle at a junction and allow the vehicle to make the turn before following, and pedestrians should stand well back from the kerb when a LGV is turning.”

The

Ceres the closest Dwarf Planet to the Sun Ceres is located in the asteroid belt, between the planets of Mars and Jupiter.
It is 950 km diameter and was discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi who preferred to call in a planetoid. However; Sir William Herschel referred to Ceres as an asteroid and won the argument of the naming of the asteroid belt. Ceres was upgraded from asteroid to Dwarf Planet alongside Pluto in 2006. The Dawn spacecraft has taken some stunning photographs of Ceres. Prior to reaching Ceres, Dawn visited the asteroid Vesta. The objective of the mission is to help scientists understand the thermal history and the role of water in the evolution of asteroids and possibly establish if meteorites found on Earth come from these bodies.

New Planet Discovered – The major-
ity of our readers will be aware of the theoretical discovery of a 9th planet in our Solar System, but bear in mind that the planet referred to as Planet 9 has yet to be located. It is believed to be 10 times the mass of Earth and at a distance between 215 and 1,075 Astronomical Units from the Sun (remember 1AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun). To give one an idea of the scale of our Solar System, Pluto is 40AU from the Sun. The new planet would take between 10,000 and 20,000 years to orbit the Sun. It is estimated that it may be as long as 7 years before the theoretical discovery is confirmed.
