The Remedial Massage Therapist Hello, my name is Cherie Darley and I am a qualified remedial massage therapist. I am always asked ‘what is a ‘Remedial Therapist?’ At Hambleton Remedial Massage Therapy I am able to examine and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions caused by injury, posture and lifestyle problems, as well as helping people live with long term conditions. I use a range of examination procedures to identify issues and then treat them accordingly. People with long term, chronic aches and pains have probably led stressful lives, resulting in long term problems they just tolerate. (I know that I did, sadly, for over ten years). I use a variety of massage techniques, mobilisations and specific treatments to help with a wide variety of problems. Having had injuries myself, and after trying several types of therapies, I settled on Remedial Massage; the combination of massage, mobilisation and treatments, which helped me with a chronic back pain and a problem hip which I had previously tolerated.

Mediterranean with a Brazilian twist Casa Rustica Grande was originally opened in July 2016 as an addition to the popular Casa Rustica Café. But, due to demand, Grande has now combined with the Café to become a café during the day and a restaurant / cocktail bar in the evening. We spoke to manageress Sam about Casa Rustica Grande and what makes it tick. “We knew that Northallerton already has lots of eateries and places to drink, but Grande offers something totally different. It’s an exciting place to visit, with exotic cocktails, excellent customer service and truly delicious food. We always provide a warm welcome to our customers and this really is a local business with an emphasis on personal service. When people visit us, they aren’t just a number on a board, we cook things just how people request them and the ever-growing number of regular diners means we must be getting it right!” Casa Rustica Grande has an extensive daytime menu of a variety of breakfast dishes, homemade cakes (made in house), continental pastries, paninis, salads and platters teamed with coffee, tea, soft drinks, wine or prosecco. From 5pm the evening menu begins, which consists of a wide variety of tapas dishes, steaks, burgers, Espeto’s and salads with the added option of cocktails to drink.

There is also a childrens menu for breakfast, lunch and evening meals. Sam was also keen to add, “We cater for all dietary requirements - vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free etc. If you can’t see something suitable on the menu, please ask and we will make something to suit requirements.” Casa Rustica Grande also provide event catering for birthdays, christenings, engagement p a r t i e s , b u s i n e s s meetings. This can be just a table booking, e i t h e r

The

Butterwick Blooms Following the success of 2016 Butterwick Blooms, Butterwick Hospice are offering three new beautiful and bespoke designs for 2017!

Butterwick Blooms are individually hand-made and personalised ceramic flowers which you can own. The bespoke flowers are being hand-made to order through the Hospice by local potter, Daisy Doodle of Northallerton. Michelle, owner of Daisy Doodle, hand makes each ceramic bloom to order. Each one features an intricate pattern and you can choose the larger purple bloom, smaller baby blue bloom or baby pink bloom. Each flower is being individually numbered and inscribed with its commemoration before its final firing. People wishing to own one of these exclusive commemorative flowers can now order them by visiting the Hospice’s website or by contacting the Community Fundraising Team. Jackie Firth, from Darlington said: “I have bought my Butterwick Bloom to celebrate the birth of my gorgeous 1st granddaughter, Emily. The blooms are beautiful. I have had her name and date of birth hand painted on the underside of the petals; it’s such a pretty and unique way to welcome Emily to our family!” Hospice Team Leader, Laura Wedgwood said: “We are delighted with these wonderful flowers that Michelle has created exclusively for Butterwick Hospice. We are offering them for sale as quality bespoke personalised items for just £25.00 each.” “Each flower is slightly different because the petals are individually finished. All the profit from the sale of the Butterwick Blooms will go towards supporting babies, children, young people and adults being cared for by Butterwick Hospice. We freely support over 2,000 patients and their loved ones through difficult times and beyond every year.” “We hope people will love these lovely commemorative blooms as much as we do. When you order your bloom you will also receive a Certificate of Authenticity and you will also be supporting thousands of people across this area who are living with the effects of a life limiting illness.” Butterwick is holding a special Butterwick Bloom event on Saturday 23rd September at Newham Grange Park, Stockton where everyone ordering a Butterwick Bloom will be invited to come and collect their own personalised flower. For more information about how to get your personalised Butterwick Bloom visit the Butterwick website at www.butterwick.org.uk/blooms or telephone 01642 628930. Blooming

Baskets! It’s hanging basket season! They can be a source of delight but also a source of stress. It’s easy for a hanging basket to fail badly. Too sparsely filled and they look bedraggled. Too little water and death is swift! The secret to growing a successful basket lays both in the way it’s planted but also in sensible aftercare. Plant the basket with bedding plants ideally at the end of May and beginning of June. Then give them some shelter in a porch, or unheated greenhouse, or even under polythene at the side of the house. This allows the new plants to grow and toughen up a little before they are hung in their final position.

especially when they are wet and you really don’t want your lovingly-planted orb of flowers to be deposited unceremoniously all over the floor! Planting is easiest if you balance the basket on a large flowerpot or bucket. Fibrous liners help to retain water and look nicer than polythene. For extra moisture retention place a circle of polythene in the base of the basket before filling with soil. The best planting medium is soilless multi-purpose compost, mixed with water-retaining granules. Place a layer of compost in the base of the basket and push the first layer of plants through. Trailing plants such as lobelia, bidens and ivy-leafed pelargoniums look lovely but you can be as creative as you like. Water the plants in their containers

up layers of plants and soil. When it’s full to within 3 cm of the rim you can plant up the top with more upright, compact bushy plants like begonias, petunias and pelargoniums. Make sure your basket never dries out. It will be reliant on you for all water and nutrition. If you water it at least once a day and feed with dilute tomato fertilizer once a week I promise it will be blooming basket in the best possible way. Happy gardening By Rachael Leverton
