Northallerton Male Voice
Choir was formed in 1968 for the sole purpose of bringing musical enjoyment to both the community and of course the members of the Choir. We perform throughout the area to raise funds for local groups, churches and charities.
Choir rehearsals are from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Thursday evenings at Northallerton Methodist Church Hall, 73 High St, Northallerton DL7 8EG. Anyone interested in joining will always be welcomed at our rehearsals.
We are lucky to have the expert leadership of our Musical Director Andrea Rhodes and the accomplished piano accompaniment of Catherine Woods. Andrea leads us in a wide repertoire of pieces taken from musical genres suiting all tastes. Anyone thinking about joining the choir may be interested to know that many of our members don’t read music. MP3’s are provided for each of our pieces to the tenors, basses and baritones so that people can listen to their own parts in preparation for rehearsals.
We are now into our busy autumn programme of concerts around the
region, as well as rehearsing for our Christmas Concerts at Northallerton Forum, which is one of the Choir’s annual highlights. Our remaining performances for the 2022-23 season are:
Sat 19 Nov @ 7.30pm – Kirkby Fleetham Village Hall Sat 17 Dec @ 3.00pm and 7.30pm – Northallerton Forum – Choir Christmas Concerts, with Easington Colliery Band

Campus@Northallerton (C@N) is an exciting new partnership between Hambleton District Council, the University of Sunderland and York College, who have come together to offer education and training courses based in Northallerton.
The campus opened in January 2022 and forms part of a larger development to transform a former prison site into a retail, business, and leisure complex in the heart of Northallerton town centre.
A unique partnership
The University of Sunderland and York College were invited into North Yorkshire to enhance the skills and training offer within the North Yorkshire region. We will offer employers and individuals the opportunity to develop new skills through a range of education routes to facilitate personal and business growth at Campus @ Northallerton. So far, we have run a range of taster sessions to showcase our course offering, we have connected with local networks including schools, local authorities, the Local Enterprise Partnerships and other key stakeholders and we are keen to develop further connections and ensure we are addressing local and regional skill shortages and training needs.
About the University of Sunderland
The Guardian University Guide 2023 places the University at number 50 in the country - our highest position in 10 years - with a rise of 42 places compared to last year. The move comes on the back of a successful few years for the University which saw it nominated as the University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards in 2021, as well as being named University of the Year for social inclusion in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.
Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Sunderland, said: “University ‘league tables’ are only one measure of the work done at the University of Sunderland. “However, such a dramatic rise in the Guardian University Guide is a notable moment for us. So, as always, I pay tribute to students and staff for all their hard work which we see, and celebrate, day in and day out.” The University was ranked 92 last year in the table, up from 100th position the year before.
York College & University Centre
York College & University Centre offers a wide range of further and higher education courses, as well as A Levels, T levels, GCSEs and apprenticeships.
Outstanding by Ofsted, the College welcomes students aged 16-and-over
from across York and North Yorkshire. The College is in the fop-five Yorkshire educational institutions with students progressing to Oxford or Cambridge.
Upcoming Courses

Feeling Fruity
Autumn is well advanced and following some brilliant colour, the trees and shrubs have shed most of their leaves. Many of us will have been busy tidying our plots in preparation for winter. However, if you’ve ever fancied growing your own fruit then now is the perfect time to put in a little extra effort.
From now until spring is the best window to plant fruit trees because now is the time that nurseries are selling bare-root trees. ‘Bare-root’ simply means without pots or soil. Bare root trees are cheaper than those grown in pots, but they are quick to establish providing you follow a few simple steps.
Before you plant the tree, soak the roots in a bucket of water for at least two hours, so it gets a good drink.
Prepare a large enough area, at least 1 metre diameter. This means that if you are planting in a lawn you’ll need to remove an area of turf to the same diameter to stop
the grass competing with the new tree for nutrients and water. Wherever you plant, make sure you dig in lots of organic matter, this could be garden compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure. Make sure you dig it all around the area where the hole will be, rather than just into the hole itself, because this will encourage the new tree to put roots out into the surrounding soil, helping it to establish quickly.
The hole for the new tree needs to be roomy enough so that the roots will not be crammed together.
Drive a stake into the ground to a depth of at least 60cm. This will provide support for your fledgling tree.
If you are planting a grafted tree, there will be a clear join where it was grafted on to the rootstock This join should remain above the soil level when planted. It’s easier if there are two of you; one to hold the tree at the correct level, and one to backfill the hole around the roots. The person holding the
tree should shake the trunk gently as the hole is filled, so that soil gets in between all the roots.
Once you’ve filled the hole, firm the soil gently with your foot. Don’t compact the soil too much. The drag more soil over the compressed area.
Use a soft rubber tie to secure the tree to the stake at a height of 60cm. Too low and the tree won’t be secure; too high and the tree won’t flex enough in the wind. Allowing the tree to flex a little encourages more root growth and results in a stronger tree.
Finally, water in well and apply a 5cm layer of organic mulch over the area but NOT touching the trunk, because it might rot. The mulch helps to suppress weeds, provide insulation, and retain moisture. Your tree should now be fine until spring when we’ll talk about ongoing care.
Happy Gardening, Rachael Leverton
