Tax Planning As we approach the end of the 2012 tax year it is a good time to review your tax situation and see if there are any tax allowances and reliefs that you can use to your advantage. We know the government is looking to increase the amount of tax that it takes from us and so we need to ensure that we do all that we can to obtain the reliefs to which we are legally entitled. Pensions
Making pension contributions is one of the easiest ways of obtaining tax reliefs. Government reforms
are introducing a new National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) starting in 2012. This new scheme will mean that your employer will be contributing to a pension scheme on your behalf. In the meantime, any individual can make a pension contribution to the maximum of their UK taxable earnings up to £50,000. This will generate a tax refund which will be added to a pension fund for basic rate tax payers and obtain a tax refund for higher rate tax payers.
ISA’s
By holding an ISA you can ensure that your savings grow without any income or capital gains tax. The maximum amount which can be contributed in 2012 is £5,340 for a cash ISA with an overall total of £10,680 for a full ISA. Annually transferring part of your investments into your ISA means that you can gradually reduce the tax that you are paying on your savings and have a valuable tax free nest egg.
IHT Gifts
Everyone can give away £3,000 per annum. You can also give away the previous year’s £3,000 if you have not already used it. If you wish to give more than the £3,000 there is

a small gift exemption of £250 and it is possible to make further gifts where there is a regular pattern of gifts out of taxed income. To ensure that these are correctly structured you should discuss these with your adviser and we would be happy to help you with this.
CGT Exemption
There is currently an annual exemption for capital gains tax of £10,600 for individuals. If this is not used in any year it is lost and so if you have any gains that you wish to cash in it may be wise to plan these to utilise your annual exemption. In addition if you have capital gains tax losses brought forward you may wish to look at your investments to see if there are any gains against which these can be used.
Businesses
The main change for business is the reduction in the annual investment allowance at 5th April 2012. On that date the allowance will reduce from £100,000 to £25,000 so businesses that wish to make large investments may want to do this before 5th April to maximise their tax claim.
We can help
As you can see there are many opportunities to save tax and now maybe the time to act to ensure that you do not pay more tax than you need to. If you would like to discuss any of the above matters please contact us and we can ensure that you are aware of how any changes fit into your personal circumstances.

So which is your favourite Bond?
We all have our own!
On Saturday 4th February Hutton Flowers in Barkers arcade, Northallerton revealed their James Bond inspired Valentines theme for 2012. This year is the 50th anniversary of the James Bond movies and to celebrate, the window display was inspired by the Bond movies. The valentines bouquets were given names like ‘From Russia with Love’ and ‘For Your Eyes Only’ to add to the theme. There was a big surprise for passing shoppers in Northallerton on Saturday, when real men took up the gauntlet of playing James Bond and gallantly dressed up in a tuxedo and stood in the display window for 30 minute slots throughout the day, this included one of InFocus magazines very own staff, Dwight! Hutton Flowers staff also joined in the spirit dressing up as female characters from the Bond movies. The aim behind the unusual

window idea was started by one of our wholesalers in Cumbria, who did a survey suggesting that up to 65% of UK men have never been into a florist shop. They started a campaign to get more British men buying flowers for their girlfriends, partners, wives, friends, colleagues and even themselves! We wanted to back this campaign and show there is nothing to be embarrassed about been seen in your local florist shop. We all had a fun day and raised a few pennies for the British Heart Foundation as well.

The Encore dance studio and shop provides a onestop-shop for all budding dancers in the area. Located adjacent to Kidzplay on Standard Way, it combines leading dancer wear outfitters Encore, with a brand new fully fitted dance studio housing the well-established Encore School of Dance. The studio was the ambition of acclaimed dance teacher Helen Grant who tells us more: “I wanted a place where anyone interested in dance could come to enjoy the benefits that dance brings. “We designed the studio with all dancers in mind and we have the space to deliver a huge range of dance classes including ballet, ballroom, jazz, tap, modern, zumba and latin. Dancing is for all and we’re keen to encourage adults and children alike to come along to our classes. With a full programme of daytime and evening dance classes plus special holiday dance clubs for youngsters, Encore caters for all dancers. The Home of Herriot Golf! The Golf club was first formed in 1914 and we are now approaching our centenary year. It started as a 9-hole course and was named Thirsk Golf Club, but, during the 2nd World War Northallerton Golf Club was taken over by the Government and the land returned to agriculture to help the war effort. The members of Thirsk Golf Club invited the members of Northallerton Golf Club to join them; hence the name was changed to Thirsk and Northallerton Golf Club. One of our most famous members was the world renowned vet and author, James Herriot (Alf Wight) who loved to play the course because the views from many of the fairways allowed Alf to see the countryside where he worked and walked, and loved so much. Alf played most of his golf with his close friend Dr Harry Haddison, who was also the family GP. When they played golf they took with them their pet dogs, both were beagles, Alf’s dog was called Dinah and Harry’s dog was called Playful (the mother of Dinah). Harry was a very accomplished golfer and played off a handicap of one, while Alf played off a steady 18 handicap. When Harry retired he moved to Scotland and became a member of St Andrews Golf Club. This left Alf and his dog at a loose-end because the then committee had stopped Alf from taking Dinah onto the course. Alf, having only enough time to do either golf or walking his dog, and being the animal lover that he was, put his golf clubs away. If only the then committee had a crystal ball? Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Club was awarded GolfMark accreditation by the English Golf Union in 2010, demonstrating the hard work and dedication given to both junior and beginner’s golf. Since then we have gone from strength to strength, growing the
12 Northallerton infocus
junior section and helping develop junior golf not only at the club but also the setting up the schools sport club partnership for the Thirsk and Northallerton area. The professionals at Thirsk & Northallerton actively go into the local schools providing them with instruction, equipment and a taster session of the game. Thirsk and Northallerton Golf Club also offer beginners a free taster session from their award winning coaching team Mike Nicholson and Robert Garner. Places are limited so to avoid disappointment please call 01845 525115 ext 4 or email the club on proshop@tngc.co.uk. Lessons are available at all times of the year, whether you are a beginner or an expert. The professionals use video technology in some of their lessons to assist the learning process. Ian Stevenson, Captain of the Club in 2011, paid tribute to both PGA Coaches Mike Nicholson and Robert Garner and the Club’s Junior Organiser Nigel Davison for their tremendous hard work and commitment in raising and maintaining the required standard of achievement necessary at the Club. The professional shop at Thirsk & Northallerton can cater for all your golfing needs. There is a wide stock
of equipment and golfing apparel. With Christmas almost upon us, the proshop have all those Christmas stocking fillers that golfers love to receive. Pop in to see their winter deals!! Lesson vouchers are available from only £20. Lesson Packages have proved to be a very popular Christmas gift and are also available. A playing lesson voucher can be the ideal gift for those golfers who want an overall improvement in their game without practicing. On course coaching has become an essential part the development process of most established golfers. It gives the golfer continuous ideas and strategies whilst playing with the professional. The ladies have a friendly and active section. Weekly competitions are played on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the working lady, we play both 9 and 18 hole formats. There is a full ladies fixture list for scratch, A and B teams, and for non-team members there are friendly matches both home and away to take part in. Ladies of all golfing standards and experience are welcome to come and join us, we are welcome on the course at any time, and there are no artificial mats in winter.

What is Parent View? Have you heard of Parent View? Do you know what it is? If not, I am not surprised. The first 7 parents that I spoke to who all had children attending different schools had not heard of it. Parent View was launched by Ofsted in October 2011. It allows parents to give their views on the school that their children attend. They are asked to give a range of opinions to a set of 12 questions that have responses from “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree“. Ofsted feel that “By sharing your views, you’ll be helping your child’s school to improve”. However, the system is potentially open to abuse and this is the main reason that I believe that many schools have been coy in not informing parents of its existence. In February I carried out a trawl on schools in the Cotswold’s; only one school had gained sufficient responses to publish results. Recent figures reported in the National Press show that one third of parents would not recommend their child’s school to another parent. This figure rose to one half in schools with a poor Ofsted rating.
OFSTED QUESTIONS
• My child is happy at this school • My child feels safe at this school • My child makes good progress at this school • My child is well looked after at this school • My child is taught well at this school
• My child receives appropriate homework for their age
• This school ensures the pupils are well behaved • This school deals effectively with bullying • This school is well led and managed • This school responds well to any concern I raise • I receive valuable information from the school about my child’s progress
• I would recommend this school to another parent
I can understand why schools are somewhat apprehensive about yet another system of accountability that bureaucracy has filtered into our already overburdened educational system, but it is with us and cannot be hidden under the table. 10 Well
WAYS TO GET FROM MARCH UNTIL MAY
hopefully the worst of the cold weather has come and gone,
and the countdown to spring has begun; gardeners are beginning to pine for the planting season. Knowing that the coast won’t be clear until the end of May, it can be an awfully long wait to get into the garden again. Here’s how to pass the time productively until the soil warms up.
Start a garden journal
It is fun going through garden magazines and clipping out great colour combinations and seed suggestions, then pasting them in for spring reference. Make note of which plants come to life first, ideas for better composting, and thoughts for the vegetable bed.
Attend a flower show
There are many horticultural happenings throughout March and April throughout the UK (visit the Royal Horticultural website for details of events).
Crack open your seed catalogs
Now is the time to order your seeds, new perennials, and summer-blooming bulbs. Think about the bare spots, new garden beds, container garden combinations, and this year’s vegetable selection. Why not do a little surfing. The Web is full of great advice, specialty sources, and interesting plant pairings.

Spruce up your houseplants
Check to see if they’re becoming pot-bound (their roots will be peeking through the bottom drainage hole), trim their roots, and repot them to give them more room. Dust the leaves, cut back dead or yellow growth, add fresh potting soil, and serve up a little fertilizer. Do your chores
If the snowdrops and crocuses can brave March weather, so can you! Clean away dead leaves and winter rubbish. Cut back ornamental grasses in early March to make way for new growth (don’t wait too long or you’ll slice off the new shoots with the old).
Visit a greenhouse
Nurseries are filling up with new pots and planters, great tools, seed selections, bird feeders, and plants. Take home an Easter lily, a pot of tulips, miniature daffodils, or some primulas to keep your home in bloom, or pick up a pretty container and a handful of grass seed and grow your own indoor patch of lawn.
Put out some pansies
These cheerful little souls are colourful, cold hardy, and will tolerate some snow and a little frost, so find a place for them on your doorstep in late March or early April. Deadhead them often for a robust display.
Take stock of your tools
Send your lawn mower out for a tune-up, bring your wheelbarrow out of hiding, sharpen your pruners, clean out clay pots with hot water and a little household bleach, and replace your wornout gloves. Every spring you will find that you have forgotten how many pots have been broken during the autumn cleanup. Now is the time to buy new ones.
Other tasks
about two to three inches long around the base for increased water uptake. Put the branches in a tall bucket of water and keep them in a cool, dimly lit place for several days, misting them occasionally and changing the water each day, then move them to a sunny location when blooms begin to show. Start some seeds indoors. Remember, seedlings need 16 hours of direct light every day, so invest in a grow light to keep them strong and bushy.
Most of all enjoy and look forward with anticipation for the great summer ahead.
Force some spring blooming shrubs and trees such as forsythia, crabapple, or pussywillow, and give Mother Nature a head start in your home. Bring several branches inside, cut the ends of the stems at a slight angle, and make a few slits
