Tough Times For Farmers Holidaymakers are not the only people who have been affected by our dismal wet summer. The wet weather has also caused problems for many farmers. And the rain and lack of sunshine has meant that crops have yielded badly with the heavy ground meaning that the harvest has come late. The continuing wet weather has also meant that farmers are having problems and delays in planting the crops for next year’s harvest and so at present the problems are ongoing.

At times like this farmers need to make sure that they make all claims for allowances that they can especially as they will have a tax bill to pay on the previous year’s harvest when yields were good. To help them with this they need to think about the following.

Farmers’ averaging Where a current year’s profits are less than 75% of the previous year’s result then the 2 years can be averaged. This could mean that if personal allowances are not being used in the current year then profits are brought forward to cover them or if in the previous year there was higher rate tax to pay then a tax claim can be made if you are only a basic rate tax payer in the current year.

Losses And losses aren’t all bad news as it may be possible to set that loss back against the previous year’s results. Again this can result in a tax refund if you paid tax in that year. Or else the losses will be carried forward against profits in future years when they occur.

Machinery The government has taken away a large benefit by reducing the Annual Investment Allowance from For advertising contact Christine on: 01609 777401 | www.jkanorth.com

£100,000 to £25,000. However, if you are able to maximise the expenditure in the current year it may mean that you turn a small profit into a loss and

if you do you can claim the benefits from losses above. It does help to have a regular program of machinery replacement even when times are difficult.

Buildings Unfortunately there are no tax allowances for agricultural buildings, which always seem harsh when farmers are so dependent on them. However a careful check of expenditure can sometimes yield a benefit. “Integral features” of buildings have their own special allowances and the equipment which is put into a building can also be claimed upon. So a detailed analysis can sometimes reveal allowable expenditure on a building. As you can see that although times are hard there are still some areas whereby claims and reliefs can be obtained and as a farmer said to me recently, it always helps to get a little bit of tax back from the tax man!

The Ultimate Christmas Gift! If you are looking to get the ultimate personalised gift for someone special this Christmas then why not commission your family tree from Footprints To The Past and help your loved one trace their roots. We spoke to Pam Ince from Footprints about the art of Geneology.

“When I’m asked, “Where do you work?” or “What do you do?”, my response always provokes a comment such as “So what do you do exactly” Once I’ve explained then I’m usually bombarded with questions and told all the family tales, rumours etc. Believe me when I say this can happen at a bus stop, cafe, social gathering and even at the hospital when I was having a broken leg put in plaster! It seems everybody wants to know their family history especially since the advent of programmes such as “Who do you think you are”. I have come across so many different things, no two families are identical and I always say “Who do you really think you are? One gentleman told me his family had links with Ireland when it turned out they were actually Dorset farmers. Sometimes I have to drop a bombshell, so to speak, for instance another gentleman asked me to trace his father’s family name which I did until the 1840’s then his great great grandfather disappeared from the face of the earth until I discovered the secret that he was illegitimate and had adopted that name at the age of 36! This poor man had been using a Family name which wasn’t

10 Northallerton infocus

even his, lucky enough the true name was traced and the family turned out to be smugglers from Kent! Better still was the chap in the Police Force who was descended from three generations of criminals, in my job I learn to be very diplomatic but whatever I find, I am honest with the results, as I say you can choose your friends but not your family! When searching for families I try to use as many sources as I can including GRO records, Wills, Army & Navy records, Parish Registers and many more, leaving no stone unturned. Most people are fascinated with the results, even if they’re descended from a humble labourer, it’s not just about names and dates it’s where these people lived, their family and occupations. Of course having your family researched is a most wonderful gift that you can give or receive as it is completely unique and tailored to you. A gift that no doubt will be passed down the family for years to come and let’s face it, you might never know otherwise - Who you really are!” Contact Pam for more details on: 01482 791155

Stunning new look at Romanby Hair Salon!

Romanby Hair Salon has undergone an extensive refurbishment and is now delighted to welcome new and existing customers to visit the new-look salon. Manager Claire tells us more, “The salon has always been popular for a number of reasons. Our convenient location and easy parking means clients can pop in either on their way to town and as they travel home. We offer discounts for pensioners and this has proved to be very successful. The salon interior was beginning to look a little dated and so we decided on the refurbishment to make it look shiny and gleaming again! We have also had a new spray

Educational Gifts for Christmas Looking for ideas on what to buy the youngsters for Christmas? Look back in your life and recall the most useful present that you were given. Is there anything similar that is still available and would be appropriate? Perhaps the present(s) that you are looking for need to be educational, entertaining and exciting. Here are a few ideas that may help you. Sponsor an Animal The obvious advantage of sponsoring an animal is that interest is maintained throughout the year with contact between the sponsor and the organisation. The WWF promote an excellent scheme, which sends the sponsor a pack which includes a cuddly toy, a certificate, a fact book, stickers and a four monthly published magazine. Another organisation is www.bornfree who put you in contact with a specific African animal that may have had serious problems affecting its life in the wild.

Magazine Subscription For those youngsters who have a hobby whether it be computing, cycling, astronomy, cars, horse riding, cooking or other interests.

Musical Instrument Guitars, banjos, bongo drums, recorders, pianos, wind instruments, violins, violas, cellos, and synthesizers the list is almost endless and you could also include singing lessons.

Construction Kits Meccano and Lego kits are still going strong for the budding engineers of the future. There are also mini wooden construction kits which can be painted once completed.

Games and Puzzles It may surprise some parents that board games are still alive and running. You may have difficulty in levering the computer whiz kids away from their social networks, but what better way to get the family together for an hour or two playing Monopoly or Scrabble and don’t forget the ever faithful jigsaw puzzles.

Books I would find it difficult to imagine a Christmas without a book and you do not have to be a bookworm to enjoy one, the difficulty with buying someone else a book is choosing the correct one. This can be easily overcome by buying your children a book token. Give them the opportunity to visit a book shop and allow them to choose one for themselves.

Magic Kits What is educational about a magic kit you may ask? Well it generates excitement giving the children a sense of accomplishment and induces a form of discipline by the requirement to read and follow instructions. I have barely scratched the surface on ideas for presents. Many find the choosing of presents a cheerful experience and I trust that you will also. So may I wish all the readers a Happy and Fruitful Festive Season. John Harris

Christmas Garden The more you can pick from your garden, collect in a wood or harvest from the hedgerow to decorate your house at Christmas the better. You’ll save yourself a fortune - and, what’s more, it is ultra-fashionable. Craft is all the rage and air (or even road) miles are to be avoided, while foraging for organic material to transform into glamorous decorations is the last word in chic. But what you don’t want to end up with is a large, dried flower-and-grass arrangement, reminiscent of a pub fireplace in summer. To keep the glamour factor high, the less you mix things up the better. Arrange each seed pod, vegetable, or fruit on its own, in an identical group or in pairs. Avoid having a mix of lots of different things - too itsy-bitsy and lacking in style. • Garden seed heads Among my favourite garden-harvested Christmas decorations are allium seed heads that have been sprayed crimson or silver. Their structure is complex yet simple: a ray of narrow stems, each ending in a flower and seed head. This combination creates a good silhouette. The football-sized Allium schubertii are the best. You can store these from one year to the next - the paint makes them less fragile - and there is no better star for the top of your tree. Also try the slightly smaller varieties, A. cristophii and ‘Purple Sensation’. If your alliums are already shot, go looking for agapanthus to spray. They work just as well. • Globe artichokes Weighty, chunky globe artichokes are ideal for spray-painting. The paint highlights every wrinkle and ridge and makes them look as if they’ve been cast in silver. You’ll want to pick them up and weigh them in your hand to see if they’re real. If possible, buy your artichokes when they’re still around in the summer and autumn or, better still, pick them from your garden. Cardoon flower buds will work just as well. Both should be harvested before they get too blown apart by wind and rain. It doesn’t matter if they’re going brown - you’ll cover them with spray - but make sure they are not too ragged. Cut them with a length of stem and a leaf or two. The leaves add a good twist and turn, and provide contrast to the chunky stem. Try to find artichokes or flower buds in different shapes and sizes as this will give your final arrangement more interesting forms and outlines.

22 Northallerton infocus

Please mention “infocus” when contacting any of our advertisers

Once picked, leave them somewhere airy and cool (not in a damp shed), so they dry out rather than going mouldy. They can be sprayed after a few days. The best colour for artichokes is definitely silver. Scatter them over your Christmas table, or along the length of a mantelpiece or window ledge, or arrange them in a large bowl interspersed with brilliant coloured Christmas baubles. • Chinese lantern chains For colour, think of growing and collecting brilliant orange Chinese lanterns to combine with fuchsia-pink spindle berries, picked from the hedgerow. Bright pink and orange are one of my favourite colour combinations and these foraged seed pods work well together threaded in a chain. Segment the Chinese lantern stems so that you have one lantern and a bit of stem in each. Then thread these sections on to a length of reel wire. As the stems are almost hollow, this is easy to do. Leave a gap between each lantern and wire the spindle into these. Then brighten and tidy the whole thing by winding ribbon along the length of the chain. • Cranberry and quail egg chains The deep rich crimson of cranberry chains is very Christmassy - and they last for more than a week. Aiming right through the middle of the berry, thread the cranberries like beads on to 45cm (18in) lengths of reel wire. Leave a bit of spare wire at each end and then join as many lengths together as you need.

Award-winning landscape photographer Joe Cornish turns holiday photographs into exciting new exhibition Best known for his sublime photographs of the North East of England, award-winning photographer Joe Cornish is showing photographs of a very different nature in his new exhibition ‘A Ladakh Journey – trekking in the Indian Himalaya’ currently at Joe Cornish Galleries. The photographs were taken during Joe’s 2012 summer trekking holiday in Ladakh, the northernmost region of the Indian Himalaya mountains. Unusually for Joe, the exhibition includes portraits of the people of Ladakh and interiors of the simple accommodation of the region, along with Joe’s usual beautiful landscape photographs. Joe says of the exhibiton ‘It was not primarily a photographic trip. However, that did not imply I was going there without a camera. In essence these images represent memories, always one of the primary functions of photography after all, of an experience which will live with me for a long time, not least thanks to the

wonderful people I travelled with, our outstanding and charming Ladakhi guide team, and those we met along the way. Perhaps that is why in the end I have included images in the exhibition that are mainly about people and place.’ The exhibition is at Joe Cornish Galleries, Northallerton until Christmas. Reduce the risk of twilight intruders! Now that the clocks have gone back, North Yorkshire County Council and the local police are advising residents to take precautions to ward off potential burglars during the late afternoon period. A statement from North Yorkshire County Council tells how intruders are attracted to houses which are in complete darkness during the late afternoon: At this time of year, many families leave home in the mornings while it is still dark and don’t arrive back until early evening. When they vacate their houses at the start of the day and switch off the lights they send out a clear signal that the house is unoccupied – this is a particular problem around about teatime if a house remains in complete darkness while others in the neighbourhood are lit up, and obviously increases the risk of intruders.” To reduce this risk and combat crime, local police have suggested a number of simple and reasonably cheap precautions: Use a timer switch to switch on lights, a radio or TV in your home. If you are going out for the evening, leave lights on and make the house look ‘lived in.’ Exterior lighting - fit a low wattage lamp with a ‘dusk to dawn’ sensor to an outside wall in appropriate places. Visible alarms will make intruders think twice. Consider

installing an appropriate system for your home and for your car, particularly if it is left parked outside overnight and don’t leave items on view. Many burglaries are committed through a rear door or window, so ‘beef up’ security at the rear of your house using additional good quality window and door locks. Make it difficult for thieves to enter your back garden by using high fencing or prickly bushes to keep them out. Don’t forget to secure any gate which leads to the rear of your property. Use strong padlocks on sheds and garages and, if possible, fasten down all ladders and expensive items in the garage and postcode them. You may also be able to connect a house security alarm to the garage. If possible, ask a neighbour to keep a watch on your property and report any suspicious activity to the Police. Whenever possible, mark all your valuables, electrical goods and other keepsakes with your post code and house number/ name. For further advice, please contact your local police.
