Ladies Clothing Store: Now Open Traditional outfitters Humphrey & Tilly of Thirsk are proud to announce that a second, standalone Ladies store, is now open at Number 43 Market Place Thirsk, just two doors down from their current premises.
Having been open for just over 3 years, business partners David & Stephen have taken the step of expanding their ladies department to be housed in much larger, separate premises. The current ladies department was at the rear of their gentlemen’s store, and David & Stephen were amazed at how many ladies weren’t aware of its existence. The Ladies store will now be footsteps away in spacious, comfortable tailor-made surroundings. Formerly Hambleton Books, Humphrey & Tilly Ladies Store, will be stocking new brands such as Barbour, Magee of Ireland,
Chatham & Aigle alongside existing brands Joules, Hunter, Schöffel & Le Chameau. They hope the Ladies store will prove to be as successful as their current business whose reputation for quality, excellent personal service and attention to detail has firmly established their brand in North Yorkshire. Passionate about maintaining local trade within the market town of Thirsk, they took this fantastic opportunity to not only expand their own business but also occupy which would otherwise have remained an empty building in the market square. Keen to grasp the challenges that local Independent businesses face today Humphrey and Tilly are combining their focus on traditional values with social media opportunities that the Internet provides by launching a new website which will include an Online store, Facebook page, Twitter account and Blog. You can follow their progress, offers, news and events on: facebook.com/humphreyandtilly, @Humphrey_Tilly or www. humphreyandtilly.blogspot.com all of which can also be accessed via their website: www.humphreyandtilly.co.uk.

Spring has returned! No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. We’re all ready for sunny days and rising temperatures; and April will bring a hint of summer to us, and our plants. Look outside and you’ll see the daffodils in flower, blossom on the trees and, if you’re lucky, the first butterflies emerging. Therefore, take your first tentative steps into the garden and consider what you’re going to do this growing season, amid the dawn chorus. April weather is a mixed bag. It’s important to keep a watch out for frosts that could harm fruit blossom and swelling buds. Horticultural fleece is good to have at hand to protect vulnerable plants. You can sew seeds under cover for summer and get potatoes chitting for Easter planting. However, these conditions also favour weed growth so try to get on top of these now to save time later. You can feed large shrubs and roses as winter rain will have washed out many soil nutrients. Furthermore, bare or new areas of grass are best seeded now. Hibernating animals and summer migrants are appearing to take advantage of the new plant growth. Try to provide wilder, less tidy areas to act as cover for them. Their breeding

seasons are upon us and providing a habitat for them will increase your wild populations, benefitting the health of your garden ecosystem. In addition, keep birdbaths clean and full as well as feeders. Providing a range of feeders will attract different species. Spring is the time for plans and projects. Why not consider creating new areas in the garden to enjoy this year. Water features, dry stone walls or outdoor lighting could add a new element for your family or wild neighbours. Adding height through planting or structures will change sight lines and develop new interest in existing layouts. If you have any questions regarding your garden then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes (BSc (Hons) Environmental Conservation) on 07739 071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk
Honesty – Lunaria annua (Right) A naturalized annual that has white to violet flowers up to 90cm in height. This beautiful plant produces “moonshaped” seedpods following flowering. The flowers especially benefit butterflies. Marsh Marigold, Kingcup – Caltha palustris (Right) This herbaceous perennial will grow in shallow water and boggy areas producing cover for pondlife. It is a native British plant and produces waxy yellow flowers that benefit bumblebees in spring. Snowy Mespilus, Juneberry – Amelanchier lamarkii (Right) Amelanchiers are small, hardy, deciduous trees. This variety has beautiful delicate flowers in early spring, bronze-tinged young leaves turning to orange/red in autumn, and red berries for birds.
Happy Gardening!
Wildlife Corner – Spring Jobs • Take time to top up birdbaths and feeders. Birds are starting to breed so avoid large foodstuffs, such as peanuts, that could choke small fledglings. • Install a bat nesting box. Bats are coming out of hibernation and for many it is their nesting season. With this in mind you can put a new box on a sunny wall to give them a head start. • Hedgehogs and badgers will benefit from extra food. Avoid bread and milk and stick to good quality dog or cat food. You can also buy specialist feeds or prepare minced meat and raw egg yourself. • Try to provide a selection of bird feeding stations that offer different feed
and methods of dispensing. Differing species have individual requirements so pay attention to location and feeder type. Avoid placing where predators have striking access. African migrants such as willow warblers, swifts and swallows all benefit from specialist feeding and watering stations. • Why not prepare an area of informal flower meadow. You can sow seeds now. This will increase the biodiversity and interest of your garden. Annuals, such as Cornflower, will provide colour this year; perrennials will establish after two or three years; Yellow Rattle can be planted to reduce the impact of invasive rye grass.

Middle of the Road The Middle of the Road is a registered charity which provides day care for physically disabled people who have suffered a disability in mid-life as a result of a stroke, M.S., Parkinsons or M. E; the average age range is between 2O and 65 years of age. Joan Easey started the day care centre, 17 years ago, when her husband suffered a stroke aged 47. Joan, who was a practising District Nurse at the time, realised quickly that there was a shortfall in the help and support available for families in the area. The day care facility is available every Thursday, between 10 am and 2 pm, at the Ripon Bowling Club. The small charge of ÂŁ3.50 is towards the cost of lunch, which can be either sandwiches or a choice of a hot meal; tea and coffee are also available. There is also a quiz every week. The premises have fully disabled access and all the helpers, who are all ex NHS Professionals, give their time voluntarily and, because of their professional experience are able to provide the support and information required. Individual physiotherapy is available every week. For more information contact Joan on: 01765 601690

Jennyruth Workshops
Something has been hatching at Jennyruth Workshops Eggs, eggs, eggs... Firstly there were dinosaurs, giant ones for the model train circuit at High Legh near Manchester, with dinosaur eggs too...but then there were Easter eggs, giant ones for the National Trust at Fountains Abbey. The National Trust’s request for ten giant Easter eggs seemed a very tall order. The eggs were to be the subject of their special egg hunt around their World Heritage Site at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. The idea is that children (and probably those not so young too) will follow a Cadbury Easter trail, discovering the giant eggs around the abbey and gardens. The Easter egg specification was for colourful eggs, with a 3D shape and about 600mm ‘tall’. The team at Jennyruth Workshops came up with the idea of a 2D shape (to suit the materials used in the workshop) but with a‘twist’. The result is a range of very colourful, perfectly formed Easter eggs with a twist which gives them a delicate leaf-like form – very appropriate for their final resting place in the trees. At Jennyruth Workshop, the eggs were each carefully cut as slices from rough timber planks. These were then sanded before decorating with a variety of colourful patterns. The slices were then reassembled

into the final ‘twisted’ egg shape. Bespoke commissions like this require the development and exercising of a full range of workshop skills which can be tailor-made for the individual workers but acting as a team. The process of working from rough timber to the final carefully formed eggs is satisfying for Workers, Staff and Volunteers alike – producing something that they can all be proud of. There is a downside…. a constant barrage of eggcellent comments about the eggciting work that is being done, not forgetting the odd yoke. Even the hardest boiled campaigner gets a bit scrambled by all of this. Pruning Roses Many people think roses are complicated and hard to prune correctly. Follow our guide to learn the right method.
Why prune roses? The aim is to improve flowering, to maintain an attractive shape and to keep plants healthy. But mention pruning roses and many people come up in a cold sweat, considering it to be difficult and complicated. This is largely because there are many different types of rose, some which need pruning in the spring and others later in the year.
How to make your cut • Use a pair of sharp secateurs to make a sloping cut, just above an outward facing bud. • The slant of the cut should face away, so rain does not run into the bud and cause it to rot.
Choose the right approach Shrub roses • Prune in mid-spring. First remove dead, diseased and dying branches, and thin out if overcrowded - remove any crossing branches and cut a few older stems to the base. • Reduce healthy main stems by about a quarter. • Unless you want to keep the hips, deadhead flowers as they fade in summer. • Roses in this group include - R.Macmillan Nurse, R.Graham Thomas and Rosa rugosa ‘Alba’. Bush roses (includes, hybrid tea, floribunda and patio roses) • Prune in mid-spring. First remove dead, diseased and dying branches. • Prune most by about half, cutting to within 8cm (3in) of the previous year’s growth. • Miniature roses only need pruning to maintain an attractive shape and if you want a larger floribunda, prune less severely. • Roses in this group include - Rosa Iceberg, R.’Princess of Wales’, R.Ingrid Bergman and R.Peace.

Climbers • Prune in the autumn after the flowers start to fade. First remove dead, diseased or dying branches. • Tie in any new shoots and remove any really old branches if the plant is heavily congested - this will stimulate new growth. • Prune side branches growing from the main framework, cutting them back to leave two to three leaf buds. • Roses in this group include - R.Handel, R.’New Dawn’ and R.filipes ‘Kiftsgate’. Ramblers • Prune in late summer. • Cut back any side branches that have flowered, leaving two to three leaf buds per shoot. • If the plant has not been pruned for some time, select a few old woody branches and cut to the base, new shoots will soon grow and can be tied in to the framework. • Roses in this group include include – R.’Albertine’, R.’Félicité Perpétue’ and R.’The Garland’. Ground cover roses • Prune in spring. • Remove dead, diseased or dying branches, and lightly prune to keep within bounds. • Reduce congestion on old plants by removing some of the thick branches to stimulate new growth. • Roses include - county series, R.Magic Carpet and R.Pink Bells. Aftercare • Once pruning has been completed, mulch plants generously, applying a thick layer of well-rotted manure or bark chippings.
