T’is The Season... The nights are drawing in and there’s still plenty to do before winter arrives: congested clumps of perennials can be lifted, divided and replanted; spring bedding and tulips are ready to go in; roses and fruit will require pruning; and food and shelter can be provided for our garden wildlife. You can place netting over ponds to collect falling leaves and remove pumps and filters over the next few months to avoid damage from freezing. Lawns are ready to be aerated and sand or gravel to be brushed into the gaps to improve drainage. It’s also time to raise the cutting height when mowing. However, on top of all the regular jobs you can start to make plans for some interesting new garden projects. As growth slows down through autumn we have a chance to step back and work out what went well and what could do with a change. Some new structures can help to create a different feel in your garden. Bare root hedging, specimen trees and architectural perennials, such as Angelica gigas (See photo above), will add height and form to frosty winter
areas. Adding a natural stone fire pit could extend the time you have to enjoy your garden; family can gather and toast marshmallows and bake potatoes in the ashes. Equally, it can create a beautiful focal point. After all, whether your garden is contemporary, natural or simply an aspiration, you can always make it a more relaxing and stylish place to be.
Therefore, if you need any assistance designing, maintaining or creating a space for yourself, family or wildlife then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes on 07739 071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes. co.uk. Next time we’ll focus on what exciting opportunities spring has to offer. Happy Gardening!

Increased Support for New Businesses in the Harrogate District Harrogate Borough Council, in partnership with Harrogate College, has agreed to extend the free business advice service at the Enterprise Gateway from one day a week to two.
Launched in December 2011, demand from people wanting to start their own business has been greater than expected, so from October 2012 free business advice will be available two days a week. Nigel Dakin, the current business adviser will be joined by a second adviser to deliver the service, which is open to: • Anyone who lives in the district • Anyone setting up a business in the district (regardless of residency) • Anyone made redundant from a business in the district, or • Established Harrogate district businesses that are less than three years old. Councillor Alan Skidmore, the council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Transport and Economic Development said: “We have decided to increase the
funding provision in order to extend the Enterprise Gateway service because of this high demand. The council’s top priority is a strong local economy. We have recently launched a new strategic economic action plan with two key aims of helping business to grow and job creation. The Enterprise Gateway helps to achieve both of these aims and I urge anyone thinking of starting their own business to visit the experienced and independent business advisors.” To date the business adviser has supported over 60 people wanting to start up their own businesses, many of whom have already started to trade. The workshop programme is also being extended to cover topics identified by clients of the service.
The skies the limit for PWM! PWM Platforms has been trading for 5 years providing access solutions for local companies, tradesmen and individuals to work at height using specialist lightweight, all terrain access platforms. Owner Paul Middlemiss tells us more, “We are slightly different from most hire companies in that we do a lot of on site work both direct with customers and assisting tradesmen and are regularly on site operating the platforms. We will work as flexibly as possible to suit people’s requirements. We are fully insured to assist on site in the form the task requires and where a specific tradesman is needed we can recommend specialists who are competent operators themselves. We have built up to a wide range of machines that are specifically designed to tackle the needs of all types of sites from large historic buildings and church spires to shopping centre’s and other indoor work. The working range of our platforms is upto 23 metres! Our machines are lightweight with narrow access, all terrain capabilities and they operate on fuel and electric for indoor applications.

We have recently moved to a commercial unit on the edge of Boroughbridge and with working at height getting harder all the time for companies, we can now offer full training courses for operators of access equipment so they are fully certified to undertake their work safely. We hope to continue to work as closely and as flexibly as possible with local customers to continue onwards and widen our range of machines and workload.” For more information please call Paul on: 01423 322922 / 07734 162885

Fantastic New Retail Space Opens in Ripon! A handpicked collection of independent, local makers, artists, growers and retailers are now open for business just off the market square in Ripon. Handpicked Hall opened its doors in early October in the space that was Philip Hall’s Department Store on Fishergate. More than 30 local businesses are bringing their products to the high street for the first time, in a bespoke indoor market place. The aim of Handpicked Hall is to act as an incubator for new businesses and allow them to grow to a size that they need their own shop space, helping to repopulate Ripon with independent retailers. All 35 stalls are already full and there is a waiting list of businesses wanting space. Handpicked Hall’s stalls range across four sections; Food and Drink, Arts and Crafts, Fashion and Accessories and Vintage. Stall holders include Sawley Kitchen, which offers homemade treats, Philippa Hall lingerie and Betterdaze vintage records, as well as independent artists such as Adrian Ward and his digital photo art. As well as providing goods to purchase, from November Handpicked Hall will offer a workshop programme called ‘Make-It.’ Stall holders will share their creative skills alongside as visiting creatives and artists-inresidence. The two ‘Make-It’ workshop spaces on the first floor will run children’s arts and crafts, high-quality creative workshops and craft parties for children’s birthdays, hen parties, baby showers and even office Christmas parties. The owner of Handpicked Hall, Anthony Blackburn, says, ‘I am thrilled to be giving so many local businesses a chance to trade at an affordable rate in a city centre location. The response has been amazing; there are so many great people out there wanting to give selling on the high street a go. Handpicked Hall gives new businesses an opportunity to reach the general public and have retail space at very affordable prices.’

Peace of Mind…whatever the weather!
THE worst September rainfall figures for more than 30 years have brought misery and mess to many people. Incessant rain falling with such ferocity and for long periods of time may have caused damage to your flat roof in your home or business. If you have suffered or are concerned that you may have experienced damage then please give locally operated Flat Roof Company a call on Freephone 0800 212548. “Over 25 years, we have built up expertise and a reputation for quality work and material,” said director Kevin Moody. “We are here to stay and that gives our customers continuity and peace of mind. They know we will be here to help and deal with any problems in the future. Some companies in this business do a job, offer a 25-year guarantee and then go bust the following year, leaving a worthless warranty. Our 25-year warranty is insurance-backed, so will be honoured no matter what”. The Flat Roof Company has just reached another major milestone – having fitted more than 35,000 roofs, whether on homes, schools or commercial premises around Yorkshire. This company has succeeded, where others have failed, using topquality materials. Traditional flat roof materials, many laid in narrow strips, have consistently failed to provide the longevity and performance sought by home and property owners. Customers now

efficient insulating material into its new, or repaired flat roofs, since the Government introduced minimum insulation levels into building regulations. The appropriately named “warm roof” is a foil-backed insulating board up to ten times more efficient than the fibre-glass quilting normally stuff between joints. Up to 30% of heat can be lost through a flat roof, but the “warm roof” reduces that loss to under 5%, an obvious saving on heating bills.
Tuffdek is a reinforced polyester laminate laid in situ on your flat or gently-sloping roof, forming a tough, single and totally jointless laminated membrane. It is fully bonded to a quality plywood decking and is available in a range of colours and finishes. The effect is that your roof is now effectively totally encapsulated, offering you peace of mind whatever the weather. As there are no joints whatsoever in the laminate, the chances of future leaks are obviously considerably minimized.
The Flat Roof Company has built up such a good reputation in the industry that it has regularly been approached by others wanting to set up. Due to this, the company began operating carefully-trained and regulated franchises and now has a network of 20 around the country. “We are fully licensed by the British Board of Agrements, a watchdog in our industry and similar ones., says Kevin, “We are subject to regular quality checks before relicensing, so we know we are doing things right.”
The Flat Roof Company has taken the industry’s technology even further by introducing a super

Christmas Garden The more you can pick from your garden, collect in a wood or harvest from the hedgerow to decorate your house at Christmas the better. You’ll save yourself a fortune - and, what’s more, it is ultra-fashionable. Craft is all the rage and air (or even road) miles are to be avoided, while foraging for organic material to transform into glamorous decorations is the last word in chic. But what you don’t want to end up with is a large, dried flower-and-grass arrangement, reminiscent of a pub fireplace in summer. To keep the glamour factor high, the less you mix things up the better. Arrange each seed pod, vegetable, or fruit on its own, in an identical group or in pairs. Avoid having a mix of lots of different things - too itsy-bitsy and lacking in style. • Garden seed heads Among my favourite garden-harvested Christmas decorations are allium seed heads that have been sprayed crimson or silver. Their structure is complex yet simple: a ray of narrow stems, each ending in a flower and seed head. This combination creates a good silhouette. The football-sized Allium schubertii are the best. You can store these from one year to the next - the paint makes them less fragile - and there is no better star for the top of your tree. Also try the slightly smaller varieties, A. cristophii and ‘Purple Sensation’. If your alliums are already shot, go looking for agapanthus to spray. They work just as well. • Globe artichokes Weighty, chunky globe artichokes are ideal for spray-painting. The paint highlights every wrinkle and ridge and makes them look as if they’ve been cast in silver. You’ll want to pick them up and weigh them in your hand to see if they’re real. If possible, buy your artichokes when they’re still around in the summer and autumn or, better still, pick them from your garden. Cardoon flower buds will work just as well. Both should be harvested before they get too blown apart by wind and rain. It doesn’t matter if they’re going brown - you’ll cover them with spray - but make sure they are not too ragged. Cut them with a length of stem and a leaf or two. The leaves add a good twist and turn, and provide contrast to the chunky stem. Try to find artichokes or flower buds in different shapes and sizes as this will give your final arrangement more interesting forms and outlines.

Please mention “infocus” when contacting any of our advertisers
Once picked, leave them somewhere airy and cool (not in a damp shed), so they dry out rather than going mouldy. They can be sprayed after a few days. The best colour for artichokes is definitely silver. Scatter them over your Christmas table, or along the length of a mantelpiece or window ledge, or arrange them in a large bowl interspersed with brilliant coloured Christmas baubles. • Silver beans I think Tiffany’s, the jeweller, used to make a solid silver runner-bean paperweight that looked wonderful. But why not create similarly striking Christmas decorations for a fraction of the price? Spraying runner beans with silver paint highlights the bulge of the beans and the lovely curve to the tip of the pod. Scatter over any flat surface, or thread on to ribbon or wire and stretch across the room as an alternative to paper chains. • Chinese lantern chains For colour, think of growing and collecting brilliant orange Chinese lanterns to combine with fuchsia-pink spindle berries, picked from the hedgerow. Bright pink and orange are one of my favourite colour combinations and these foraged seed pods work well together threaded in a chain. Segment the Chinese lantern stems so that you have one lantern and a bit of stem in each. Then thread these sections on to a length of reel wire. As the stems are almost hollow, this is easy to do. Leave a gap between each lantern and wire the spindle into these. Then brighten and tidy the whole thing by winding ribbon along the length of the chain. • Cranberry and quail egg chains The deep rich crimson of cranberry chains is very Christmassy - and they last for more than a week. Aiming right through the middle of the berry, thread the cranberries like beads on to 45cm (18in) lengths of reel wire. Leave a bit of spare wire at each end and then join as many lengths together as you need.

Independence Day Rather than being about the film this article is about financial planning. When it comes to financial planning, one of the answers that people often want to know is, when will they have amassed enough wealth (property, pensions, savings and investments and business assets) to be able to retire? Using cashflow modeling which is basically a year by year income and expenditure account for your household, it’s possible to estimate the point at which you will be financially independent, Independence Day. By planning this, you clearly have a better chance of leading the lifestyle you want than leaving it to chance and ending up “cutting your cloth according to your means”. The key ingredients to finding your independence day are your current situation (income, outgoings, assets and liabilities). Using these as a start point the cash flow modeling projects into the future to establish the point at which you no longer need to work actively to support your lifestyle. This would allow for any goals which you might have, e.g. education fees, travel plans etc. Clearly the cost of your planned lifestyle is very important and it is worth spending some time understanding what your lifestyle costs you now and how this might change in future.

Understanding the point at which financial independence is reached, can help you plan the future with confidence. It can also be a reality check but it is an important step in planning for the future. For example, it might be that it’s not possible to support your planned lifestyle if you carried on living in your current home but by allowing for downsizing it becomes possible. This is then an option which you can take into account when making your plans.
The second chart (below) shows that by moving their retirement age to 67, they have sufficient funds to be financially independent. Note that this doesn’t allow for downsizing which would form part of the financial planning discussion.
With this overview, more detailed financial plans can be built which target your personal goals and objectives. The chart below shows the cash flow for a couple who plan to retire at 60. Please contact me if this type of financial planning would be of interest.
The red in the chart from age 78 shows that there are insufficient funds from this point to support the cost of living.
