The Ultimate Christmas Gift! If you are looking to get the ultimate personalised gift for someone special this Christmas then why not commission your family tree from Footprints To The Past and help your loved one trace their roots. We spoke to Pam Ince from Footprints about the art of Geneology.

“When I’m asked, “Where do you work?” or “What do you do?”, my response always provokes a comment such as “So what do you do exactly” Once I’ve explained then I’m usually bombarded with questions and told all the family tales, rumours etc. Believe me when I say this can happen at a bus stop, cafe, social gathering and even at the hospital when I was having a broken leg put in plaster! It seems everybody wants to know their family history especially since the advent of programmes such as “Who do you think you are”. I have come across so many different things, no two families are identical and I always say “Who do you really think you are? One gentleman told me his family had links with Ireland when it turned out they were actually Dorset farmers. Sometimes I have to drop a bombshell, so to speak, for instance another gentleman asked me to trace his father’s family name which I did until the 1840’s then his great great grandfather disappeared from the face of the earth until I discovered the secret that he was illegitimate and had adopted that name at the age of 36! This poor man had been using a Family name which wasn’t

8

Ripon & Masham infocus

even his, lucky enough the true name was traced and the family turned out to be smugglers from Kent! Better still was the chap in the Police Force who was descended from three generations of criminals, in my job I learn to be very diplomatic but whatever I find, I am honest with the results, as I say you can choose your friends but not your family! When searching for families I try to use as many sources as I can including GRO records, Wills, Army & Navy records, Parish Registers and many more, leaving no stone unturned. Most people are fascinated with the results, even if they’re descended from a humble labourer, it’s not just about names and dates it’s where these people lived, their family and occupations. Of course having your family researched is a most wonderful gift that you can give or receive as it is completely unique and tailored to you. A gift that no doubt will be passed down the family for years to come and let’s face it, you might never know otherwise - Who you really are!” Contact Pam for more details on: 01482 791155

Blackberries A hedge against marauders & inflammation

A

s August mellows into autumn, the smell of ripening blackberries hangs in the air, prompting bicyclists to pause along highways, bucket-lad en homemakers to head for the woods, and bears to amble along roadsides where the ebony morsels are within easy reach. Wild blackberries are native to Europe, Asia, North America and South America, but at least two millennia ago Europeans brought blackberries onto their homesteads and began cultivating them for food and medicine. As the prickled canes multiplied around their settlements, vulnerable rural dwellers discovered blackberry thickets were also quite useful for repelling marauders. (Inveterate blackberry pickers believe their torn hands and arms are the price one should pay to collect these delectable fruits. However, for the faint-of-heart who prefer to collect their berries close to home and who’d rather not leave a trail of blood and clothing fragments behind, many “thornless” cultivars are now available.)

Anthocyanins, the pigments that give blackberries their rich, inky color, are potent antioxidants. Blackberries are also a good source of salicylic acid, an anti-inflammatory with proven painkilling abilities (think “aspirin”). The tannins in blackberry leaves are powerful astringents; one of them, ellagitannin, is converted to ellagic acid in the human body. Research has demonstrated that ellagic acid possesses both antioxidant and anti-proliferative (anti-tumor) properties.

Uses While blackberries’ constituents probably confer several long-term benefits (e.g., protection from heart disease and cancer), the astringent substances found in the plants’ leaves, stems and roots are responsible for their immediate and obvious effects.

Blackberry root tea has been used for treating diarrhea, dysentery, stomach pain, cough, hemorrhoids and oral ulcers. The German Commission E approves blackberry leaf tea for diarrhea and inflammation of the mouth and throat. Externally, leaf tea is useful for boils, sores and ulcers. (Soak a clean cloth with warm tea and use as a poultice.) Traditionally, blackberry infusions, teas and decoctions have been employed to treat gonorrhea, excessive menstrual bleeding, whooping cough, “dropsy,” and labor pains. When collecting blackberries or blackberry plants, wear some stout gloves (preferably a pair that covers your forearms) and carry a pair of bypass hand shears to cut your way to the prime berries – which always seem to be tucked behind a forbidding wall of heavily prickled canes.

Nutrients & Medicinal Constituents Blackberries are a veritable storehouse of nutrients and pharmacologically active compounds. Delicious flavor aside, the nutrition packaged in a handful of berries explains why they’re such a valuable food source for wildlife: within the turgid skins of each berry (which is actually an aggregate fruit) you’ll find ample doses of vitamins A, C, E and K, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc, protein and fiber.

ls

Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ This tall, beautiful sunflower (1.8m) produces mellow, soft yellow flowers on tall, dark green stems.

Autumnal weather is approaching and the garden is slowing down in preparation. This time of the year brings vibrant colours and bountiful harvests. Try to take the time to get into your garden and enjoy the autumn splendour. In autumn you can keep the garden in shape by pruning rambling roses, tidying up tired plants in the borders and lifting and splitting mature perennials. It’s good practice to gather seeds for next year. These can be kept in paper envelopes/ bags. Furthermore, falling leaves can be collected and stored in a leaf composting area. This makes fabulous mulch, keeps the garden healthy and provides an overwintering hotel for bugs and small animals. Autumn provides us and our wildlife neighbours with a selection of fruit, seeds and veg. Therefore, get out

and do some bramble picking, leave sunflower heads out for the birds and think about planting to increase the bounty next year. Autumn is a good time to consider making changes in the garden. You could plan a spring bulb display, create an area in which to entertain family and friends or simply create a beautiful and natural focal point, such as the photo above highlights. Here we built a nature friendly half moon pond that fits into its existing surroundings. We used local mossy stone, native planting and bespoke paving to create this stunning area. If you have any questions regarding your garden then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes (BSc (Hons) Environmental Conservation) on 07739 071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk

Blackthorn / Sloe - Prunus spinosa A native, small tree (6-7m) with an abundance of sloes at this time of year. Very beneficial to wildlife.

Anemone x hybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ This elegant Japanese Anenome (1.2m) has white single flowers bossed in gold. It does well in most situations apart from damp areas.

Happy Gardening!

Wildlife Corner – Autumn Jobs This is a great time of year to create habitats in your garden. Many creatures will be grateful for the addition of a new area in which they can settle down in for the winter. Adding habitats will also increase the biodiversity within your garden and increase its ability to weather a cold winter snap. Naturally, more variety leads to improved garden health and more interest for us and the wildlife. Therefore, why not introduce some of the following: • Mini stone walls • Stumperies • Brash piles • Wildlife ponds • Bug mansions • Compost heaps • Toad houses • Hedgehog boxes • Bat boxes

Wildlife will use just about anything that is clean and safe for a habitat. You give them the opportunity and they do the rest! P.S. Don’t forget to check the bonfire pile for Mr and Mrs Hedgehog and other woodland creatures before you enjoy Guy Fawkes Night.

Stay Safe this autumn With the days getting darker earlier, now is a good time to think about what you can do to keep yourself and your property safe. Follow our simple crime prevention tips. • Avoid leaving keys and valuables

on display near doors or windows. • Always lock windows and doors

before you go out or go to bed. • Store bins and gardening equip-

ment securely so they can’t be used to break into your house. • Lock away valuable garden equip-

ment and secure your shed. • Use timer switches to turn lights

on and off if you go away, to give the illusion someone is home. • Consider fitting intruder alarms,

door chains, a spy hole and external lights.

and keep receipts somewhere safe.

• Always check the ID of cold call-

ers – consider fitting a door chain or spy hole.

Darker evenings - be safe, be seen With darker mornings and

evenings, take extra care when you are out and about on foot or bike. • Stay visible - wear bright, reflec-

tive clothing if you’re out walking. • Fit reflectors and lights to your

bike - this is a legal requirement. • Keep to busy, well-lit areas. • If you drive, use appropriate

lights so you are clearly visible to other road users. ** Remember, the clocks go back on Sunday 27th October**

• Security mark valuable items

Stay Safe this Halloween

Halloween is a fun time for some but also a worrying time for others, particularly vulnerable people. If you have young children:

• Make it clear, if a ‘no trick or treat’

sign is displayed, they should leave straightaway. • Advise them to stay in a group and

never go into the home of someone they don’t know. • Make sure they understand they

must not frighten people.

• Never let young children go trick

or treating on their own. • Make sure they only visit people

known to your family. If you have older children: • Make sure they are not going to be

using alcohol, flour or eggs.

Chim-chim-cheree

The term ‘Chimney sweep’ may conjure up images of small, Dickensian type characters covered in soot, scrambling up enormous chimneys, and we might ask ourselves if there is really a need for this ancient trade in today’s modern world with its gas fires and centrally heated properties. Well, the short answer to that is ‘Yes!’ Even chimneys serving gas fires need cleaning on a regular basis – and if you are one of the growing number of householders returning to the cosy, romantic comfort of a traditional coal or log fire, it is essential that you spend a little time and money ensuring that your fireplace is functioning both safely and efficiently. As a fire burns, it releases numerous gases up the chimney which escape into the atmosphere. As they pass through the chimney, soot - which contains a flammable substance called creosote - begins to accumulate on the walls. Over time, these deposits can begin to obstruct and eventually completely block the chimney, which could lead to an inefficient and potentially unsafe fireplace and the risk of chimney fires. This is

why regular cleaning of a chimney is essential.

Although it is possible to clean the chimney yourself, you might prefer instead to hire a professional chimney sweep to do this tiring, messy job! In addition to cleaning the chimney, he or she will check for other problems which might lead to chimney fires or inefficient burning, and will also inspect your chimney for potential problems from the roof. A chimney that serves an open fire should be swept at least once a year, after a period of prolonged disuse (for example at the end of the summer) , and also at the end of the heating season to ensure that it is clear of animal nests and is prepared for the idle period. Chimneys that are used frequently may need cleaning more often, whilst those serving gas fires less often. A visit to the National Association of Chimney Sweeps or Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps websites will help you locate a local, reliable chimney sweep. These two organisations have worked together over recent years to introduce a

National Code of Practice for Chimney Sweeps, designed to protect the public from untrained or poorly trained sweeps. Sweeps meeting the Standard are required to issue an Industry Standard certificate (the Standard being printed on the reverse) and where necessary, an Industry Standard Warning Notice and Label. A sweep typically takes around 45 minutes and costs around £40 per chimney, though this can vary according to location and the difficulty of the job. Before employing anyone to carry out the work, please check that they have full public liability insurance. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
