Your opinion is needed! Continental Style Cafe Culture could come to Kirkgate Ripon’s Kirkgate is undoubtedly the envy of some other cathedral cities in the country and those that live and work in Ripon are rightly proud of that reputation. That is why they are being consulted on some exciting plans for this historic street that could include proposals to allow restaurants and cafes to provide ‘al fresco’ dining.
As the city’s premier shopping, dining and tourism street, leading as it does to the very door of the city’s magnificent cathedral, we need to make sure that everything can be done to protect and improve this great asset for the city. Many policies are in place to protect it, whether they are nationally or locally set, but as part of plans through the Harrogate district’s ‘My Neighbourhood’ project, a number of organisations have come together to work jointly for the benefit of the Ripon Minster Ward in which Kirkgate is situated. Councillor Don Mackenzie, chair of the Harrogate District Strategic Partnership Forum, which steers the My Neighbourhood projects, said: “People sitting outside enjoying fine food and drink and taking in what must be one of the best views in the country, will have the added benefit of attracting other people to stroll along the street to browse, shop and enjoy everything else Kirkgate and Duck Hill have to offer. This is a very common practice in other towns and cities in the country and of course in many of our European counterparts.” Before an approach is made to North Yorkshire County Council (highways) and Harrogate Borough Council (licensing and environmental health) to seek the appropriate permissions, the My Neighbourhood project team needs to know whether there is public support for the proposal. The idea would be for Kirkgate to be closed to traffic for parts of the day – a suggested period would be between 11.00 am and 11.00 pm which would allow businesses time for their deliveries before the road is closed. It is also envisaged delivery vehicles could park on an allocated area at the city end of Kirkgate throughout the day and wheel their goods along the street if they need to deliver after 11.00 am. Nothing is definite, but this could be an opportunity for something positive to be done. If there is enough support, ‘al fresco’ dining on Kirkgate could be in place by early spring 2012 for the start of the tourism season. Residents and business are being invited to send their comments on the proposal by completing a questionnaire available by emailing engagement@harrogate.gov.uk or by phone 01423 556068. The closing date for comments is 30 October. There are four ‘My Neighbourhood’ projects currently underway in the Harrogate district which will tackle common issues by a number of partner organisations working together.

This year they are concentrating on simple shapes such as reindeer, doves and camels which are cut out, painted, distressed or varnished. Rachael has been keen to help make Christmas products “I have been painting reindeer. They look nice and we should sell a lot.” Emma has been making Christmas cards to sell “I cut out shapes for our Christmas cards and make the cards.” Oliver has been developing his skills on the scroll saw to cut out fretwork pictures as well as some more detailed reindeer shapes. These will be on display in the Jennyruth shop in the next few weeks. Christmas decorations
from the garden The more you can pick from your garden, collect in a wood or harvest from the hedgerow to decorate your house at Christmas the better.
Garden seed heads
Among my favourite gardenharvested Christmas decorations are allium seed heads that have been sprayed crimson or silver. Their structure is complex yet simple: a ray of narrow stems, each ending in a flower and seed head. This combination creates a good silhouette. Bell-shaped opium poppy seed heads are also ideal. Spray-paint them and link one with another into a long ribbon chain to hang over mantelpieces, around doors and down the length of your table. When spraying anything, wear gloves, ensure good ventilation and use acres of newspaper. If you forget (as I did) and your fingers get covered in silver, clean them with a mix of two tablespoons of sugar, one tablespoon of lemon juice and one of olive oil. Forget soap - this
20 Ripon & Masham infocus

home-made remedy gets almost anything off your hands.
Globe artichokes
Weighty, chunky globe artichokes are ideal for spray-painting. The paint highlights every wrinkle and ridge and makes them look as if they’ve been cast in silver. You’ll want to pick them up and weigh them in your hand to see if they’re real. If possible, buy your artichokes when they’re still around in the summer and autumn or, better still, pick them from your garden. Cardoon flower buds will work just as well. Both should be harvested before they get too blown apart by wind and rain. It doesn’t matter if they’re going brown - you’ll cover them with spray - but make sure they are not too ragged. Cut them with a length of stem and a leaf or two.
The leaves add a good twist and turn, and provide contrast to the chunky stem. Try to find artichokes or flower buds in different shapes and sizes as this will give your final arrangement more interesting forms and outlines. Once picked, leave them somewhere airy and cool (not in a damp shed), so they dry out rather than going mouldy. They can be sprayed after a few days. The best colour for artichokes is definitely silver. S c a t t er t hem over yo ur Ch r ist mas table, or along the length of a mantelpiece or window ledge, or arrange them in a large bowl interspersed with brilliant coloured Christmas baubles.
Chinese lantern chains
For colour, think of growing and collecting brilliant orange Chinese lanterns to combine with fuchsiapink spindle berries, picked from the hedgerow. Bright pink and orange are one of my favourite colour combinations and these foraged seed pods work well together threaded in a chain. Segment the Chinese lantern stems so that you have one lantern and a bit of stem in each. Then thread these sections on to a length of reel wire. As the stems are almost hollow, this is easy to do. Leave a gap between each lantern and wire the spindle into these. Then brighten and tidy the whole thing by winding ribbon along the length of the chain.

How to Store
Firewood
for the Winter Storing firewood for the winter is all about keeping your firewood protected from the elements and exposed to plenty of air circulation to properly season it. In order for firewood to burn and give off heat to its full potential, it needs to be dry and free of rot. Attempting to burn wet firewood
22 Ripon & Masham infocus
is an exercise in frustration, and can cause damaging creosote to build up in your chimney. The seasoning process normally takes at least six months in proper storage conditions, but a few storage techniques exist which can cut the length of seasoning time by at least half.
• To properly store and season firewood for the winter season, you’ll need to have easily stackable, stove-sized pieces of firewood. The most common length for firewood is 18 inches. Before stacking, lay two long 2X4 boards on the ground, parallel to each other and spaced anywhere from twelve inches to fifteen inches apart. If the 2X4 boards are significantly long, you may need to place an additional shorter piece of 2X4 lumber under the middle of the two long parallel boards to prevent them from sagging and touching the ground. • Next, drive the pointed ends of four posts into the ground at both ends of the parallel 2X4s. These posts will hold the sides of the wood stack in, preventing it from collapsing out at the sides. The height of the posts used to contain the stack will depend on the amount of wood you’ll be stacking, though an eight foot high post (at least one foot of which will be underground) is usually sufficient to contain most stacks. • Stack the firewood lengthwise across the two parallel 2X4s lying on the ground, and between the four end posts, completing a single layer before moving up to the next. The firewood should overlap the 2X4s a little on both ends. By stacking the firewood
Please mention “infocus” when contacting any of our advertisers
on these 2X4s, you’ll be keeping it off the damp ground, where it would be subject to saturation, rot and insect infestation. Keeping the wood elevated by a few inches also allows air and wind to circulate underneath and up into the firewood stack, drying it out thoroughly for proper burning. • After you’ve stacked the last, uppermost layer of firewood, drape a large, rectangular and clear plastic sheet, three to four millimeters thick, over the top of the firewood. Adjust the sheet so that it it’s roughly straight and drapes down to cover most of the firewood. The protective plastic sheet doesn’t need to reach the ground, with air circulation actually being better served by a sheet which ends about a foot from the ground on all sides. The sheet will not only serve to protect the firewood from precipitation, but will also act as a sort of makeshift “greenhouse” in which the drying process is sped up due to heat from sun exposure. To prevent the sheet from blowing off the woodpile, drape pieces of twine sideways over the woodpile and tie weights to both ends of the twine. The twine should be long enough to clear the top of the pile and drape down with at least a foot of length to spare on both ends. If you follow these instructions, you should have dry firewood all winter long.

HMRC finds its teeth HMRC has previously been criticised for using all carrot and no stick in its tax-collection campaigns. But plumbers should move fast if their tax affairs are not up to date, as a series of raids are planned for the coming weeks. Plumbers and others had the opportunity this spring to “come clean” and declare any underpaid tax. Reduced penalties were offered with the threat of investigation and tough treatment for non-conformers. It now seems that the threat was not idle. Already five plumbers have been arrested and around 600 are under investigation. Mike Wells, director at HMRC said “These arrests are just the start. HMRC are considering hundreds of other cases for criminal investigation.” A disclosure route is still open for anyone who suspects they may have underpaid. As well as plumbers, teachers and instructors should beware, with private tutors and fitness coaches being among HMRC’s next targets. More information can be found at www.HMRC.gov.uk or at www.lmebdon.co.uk.
