Jennyruth Workshops continues to go from strength to strength At Jennyruth Workshops we are looking back on a joyous year of celebrations of our 10th Anniversary at Red House Farm, Ripon, with so many wonderful memories. But with excitement we look forward to the many challenges and changes that lie ahead. 2014 has seen Jennyruth Workshops enjoying collaborating with Brighter Boroughbridge to create this stunning Tour de France display at the A1 Boroughbridge junction. This display will soon change to field of large poppies as we all remember the sacrifices of those 100 years ago in World War One. Change is the recurring theme at the moment with many upgrades to our facilities including a new training room, an outdoor relaxation and working space and a redecorated mess room. We are purchasing a laser cutter that will allow our workers to develop new and relevant skills and to produce an even wider range of products. We want to use this equipment and these skills to also benefit our local community by producing quality products for local businesses and community groups.
We spend a lot of time involving ourselves in the local community with school workshops and presentations to various groups in and around the Ripon area. Please contact us if you are interested in working with us.
We would love to invite you to visit us at our workshops at Red House Farm, Ripon to share our joy and excitement and to meet our learning disabled colleagues who produce our wonderful range of products.

Nidderdale gets the keys to community car North Yorkshire County Council has handed over the first community car to people in Nidderdale as a local solution to transport needs across this rural area. Keys to a brand new Peugeot 308 diesel estate car were handed over to Nidderdale Plus, the local voluntary organisation, by Cllr Tim Swales, the county council’s chairman and Cllr John Fort, the local member for Pateley Bridge, at the Nidderdale Show last month. The car will be based in Pateley Bridge and, with a pool of volunteer drivers, will provide transport for people in areas where no public transport exists. “This is a bespoke scheme for the Nidderdale area and is like manna from heaven for an area like ours which is very rural with limited public transport,” said Cllr Fort, who is also president of the Nidderdale Show. “Nidderdale is looking forward to having the car, volunteer drivers have gone through the necessary training and we are ready to go. We hope it will go a long way to resolving transport issues and preventing isolation
for some members of our community.” If successful, the scheme could be replicated in other parts of North Yorkshire. The scheme comes out of the “Stronger Communities” programme through which the county council supports communities to help themselves and create local solutions to services at a time of significant financial challenge for the authority. The project has been developed following a series of public meetings with the county council last year where the community expressed their concerns about lack of transport. It became clear that some sort of community transport scheme was needed. The county council worked with Nidderdale Plus on the best solution - and a community car rather than a minibus was felt to be a more flexible form of transport and easier to manage.

Nature
in the Garden
Burnished gold, russet and amber form a mosaic of kaleidoscopic colour. Autumn is the season to truly behold nature’s palette; a vibrant, visual feast. It’s a beautiful, bountiful event so enjoy every enchanting minute of its earthy goodness.
In the garden many plants are now slowing down in preparation for winter. Despite the lack of new growth autumn and winter can produce plenty of interest with a little planning and creativity. It’s good to have strong, interesting features that take over the batton from the beauty of the spring and summer flower display. These could be a stylish knot garden, a bespoke element of structure or a dazzling water feature. However, the list is endless. Therefore, why not consider adding a beautiful focal point to make the garden fun all year round.
You could have a fire pit to warm your toes by, a stone sculpture to catch the morning frost or even a personalized floor design like the one we created below. Whilst adding a new facet to your area this will also fashion your own personal, quirky touch within your garden.
For an informal chat about your garden space and how it can be transformed through tailored, individual design and construction then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes (BSc (Hons) Environmental Conservation) on 07739071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk
Plants in Focus:
3 Autumn Sparklers
Sedum telephium ‘Autumn Joy’ A nectar-rich, clump forming, upright sedum with pink to rosy red umbrella like flowers
Colchicum autumnale ‘album’ / Meadow Saffron Autumn brings goblet shaped white flowers, this plant is highly toxic so handle with care.
Parrotia persica / Persian Ironwood A medium sized, drooping and spreading deciduous tree with fantastic gold, orange and red autumn colour and red flowers in Winter / early Spring.
Happy Gardening!
Wildlife Corner A Bug’s Life
The creatures in our gardens are as varied as you can possibly imagine. They really are biodiverse. The colder months are generally harder for them and they will appreciate any help you can give. Their diverse nature often means that it helps to be inventive when creating safe environments for them. Think about providing food and protection from the elements via various habitat types. Wildlife will use just about anything that is clean and safe for a habitat. You give them the opportunity and they do the rest! Go on, give it a try. Here’s one to get you started - bug boarding house: • Collect up some fallen/rotting pieces of wood • Find a quiet corner in the garden • Dig 3 to 4 pieces half into the ground • Cover over with more wood, soil and leaves • Wait for the vast army of mini beasts and grubs to move in and provide a snack for birds, hedgehogs and frogs. Garden Power!
Gardening is a bit like Marmite: you either love it or you hate it. But whatever your reasons for doing it, there is a way to make it quicker, easier and more effective - power tools! You should opt for the lighter-weight, less powerful, electrically operated versions if your garden is on the small side, and choose the heavier, more powerful, petrol-operated gadgets for larger lawns and longer hedges. Cordless electric tools, powered by rechargeable batteries, are also available to allow more freedom of movement and reduce the chance of cutting your cord in half! There are four types of lawn mower – the cylinder mower that produces an even, close cut ideal for flat lawns; the rotary mower which is better for longer grass and uneven lawns; the hover mower which floats on a bed of air to make it easier to manoeuvre; and the hand mower which is environmentally friendly and has no running costs. In all cases, the addition of a box or bag to collect grass will save you time and energy. A trimmer keeps borders tidy, paths free of grass, and reaches areas around bushes and trees which can be difficult to access with a mower. Hedge trimmers have two blades which work against each other rapidly. Trimmers with double action blades are more efficient than single action trimmers where only one blade moves. Longer blades cut quicker. A 450-560mm blade is fine for an average-sized hedge, but larger or denser hedges may need one longer. The blade width indicates the maximum thickness of the branches you can cut, so a 16mm blade can cut branches up to 16mm thick. Telescopic trimmers are available for higher hedges. Blowers are useful in autumn for clearing an area of fallen leaves and directing them into a specific spot. Once collected they can be vacuumed up along with other light debris then shredded into an attached storage bag. Blowers and vacuums can come separately, or as a combination blower vacuum. The surface of a lawn can become covered in leaves, moss and thatch (plant debris) which prevent water, oxygen and nutrients from getting into the soil. Rakers aerate the lawn and remove leaves, moss and other garden debris. Some also incorporate a scarifier with blades that push into the soil to remove moss and thatch. Shredders dispose of branches, twigs and leaves. Rapid impact shredders chop leaves and green branches finely into mulch. Crushing-shredders are quieter and are suitable for turning woody branches into chips. As shredders sometimes get blocked, look for one with a reversible option or other anti-blocking mechanism. Finally, how about a chain-saw? Used to cut down trees, lop branches and cut firewood, they are much faster than an axe, but should only be used when wearing appropriate safety gear. Now, where did I put that tub of Marmite? By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

A Local Company with specialist knowledge to help save you money! Peak Power Systems of Pickering are specialist providers of renewable energy systems. By tapping into the earth’s naturally renewable resources this successful company can help you be kinder to the environment while heating your home and helping you manage household costs. The Feed- In Tariff scheme for solar panels has proved to be a good incentive for many homeowners, and with the recently-introduced Renewable Heat Incentive for heat pumps, and Biomass boilers, these renewable energy heating systems are rapidly becoming the best option for heating many homes and businesses. Peak Power Systems can help both domestic and business customers cut their energy bills and take full advantage of government-backed schemes, which offer financial incentives for those who upgrade their old heating system in favour of new, efficient, cost effective systems, that are also cheaper to run. As registered Green Deal advisors, Peak Power Systems can offer advice as to which type of system is best for a home or business, and offer excellent one-to-one customer service.
Mark explained: “We will guide you through the installation process and help with all aspects of the Feed-In Tariffs and Renewable Heat Incentives (run by Ofgem), making the process as straightforward as possible.” Peak Power Systems encourages any new customer to ask for their free initial survey, as this would indicate which type of renewable energy is right for them. Advice is free and impartial, and we are always happy to offer advice over the telephone. Renewable energy systems are also suitable for schools, businesses, farms and small holdings, with a recent large scale solar pv installation having been completed at Muntons Malt, near Bridlington. Mark said: “The future for electricity and fossil fuel heating looks uncertain. Who knows what may happen in 50 years? As a long-term investment with immediate benefits, Peak Power Systems can help you become more energy efficient. By investing in modern technologies, you insulate yourself against the ever rising cost of fuel and electricity; and when you set the cost of the installation against the return on your investment, you can expect most systems to pay for themselves in four to seven years”. Take the heat out of moving from gas, LPG, electricity, coal or oil by letting Peak Power Systems expertly manage all your renewable energy needs. Mark and Debbie, launched Peak Power Systems on the strength of their long-held interest in renewable energy, coupled with Mark’s background in engineering. Peak Power Systems is also accredited with MCS( Micro-generation Certificate Scheme) and RECC. Most installations can be completed in just four weeks from the initial survey, so now’s a great time to contact them. So if you want to manage your heating and electricity bills without them costing the earth, it’s time to talk to Peak Power Systems.
