Protecting Your Mortgage Having decided upon your mortgage & your method of repayment, you will need to consider, not only what happens at the end of the Mortgage Term, but also what would happen if you or your partner are not able to repay your mortgage due to an accident, sickness, redundancy or death. The most common ways to protect your mortgage are:

Term Assurance This is Life Cover, which pays out a lump sum on death of the Life (person) Assured within the Policy Term. There is no savings element to this Policy; it only covers the length of the mortgage loan. Lenders advise you take out a Life Assurance policy.

Critical Illness Cover

Accident & Sickness Cover A similar policy to the PHI as it pays an income whilst you are unable to work due to illness or accident. However, there are some differences between this & PHI for instance a shorter deferment period; fewer health questions & cheaper monthly payments; Conditions apply.

This pays out a lump sum on diagnosis of specified illnesses or permanent total disability, regardless of whether or not the illness prevents you from working. Usually an ‘add on’ to a Term Assurance Policy as extra cover but can be taken out on a stand-alone basis.

Permanent Health Insurance (PHI) This policy pays out an income if you are unable to work due to illness or accident, but after an initial deferred period. The deferred period & the length of the payments are specified at the outset - the longer the deferment, the cheaper the premiums. Benefit payments are calculated as a % of salary as an incentive to return to work. The Policy once started cannot be cancelled by the Insurer, but can be cancelled by you, regardless of the number & length of claims made.

Jennyruth Workshops: From the perspective of a volunteer This year has brought a frustrating start to autumn with the Workshops suffering a flood sufficient to disable normal operations for several weeks. Staff, workers and volunteers alike have all been searching out new outlets for their energies - though the staff’s focus was on keeping the Workshops not just ticking over but regenerating. After the flood (not of Biblical proportions) we have the run-up to Christmas (of Biblical proportions). This is not only the busiest time of the year but also the atmosphere becomes electric with an enthusiasm buzzing around the workers which is infectious. Even the most cynical of volunteers or visitors cannot help leaving their Scrooge-like emotions at the door when they enter the Workshops. This effect is very difficult to define and impossible to quantify - the ability of this environment to refresh those parts which others cannot reach. Christmas always brings a host of new products to supplement the old favourites, whether you want kings, angels, Father Christmases, reindeer, rag-wreaths along with hedgehogs, cats or ‘you name its’ of all sizes and colours. This range is further extended by bespoke items which can be tailored to suit your requirements - though a very early order is essential at this time of year. There are numerous personal reasons which might prompt you to shop at Jennyruth Workshops, and particularly at Christmas. High amongst these should be that the products are handmade in Ripon by local adults who have special needs and who produce unique, quality items at excellent prices. The Workshops’ operations are planned to be good for the environment with raw materials being responsibly

sourced, reclaimed or recycled and with paints and preservatives all being non-toxic and safe for purpose. Jennyruth Workshops is most simply described as ‘a productive workshop where adults with learning disabilities gain confidence, work and life skills’. This is a most challenging ambition and particularly for those who might have low self esteem. The joy is that this ambition is realised, with unimagined skills acquired and confidence levels very high.

Nature

in the Garden

Get Ready For Winter

Gold, saffron and red join the palette as the autumn rhythms slow for another year. The hedgerows and fields are full of life and preparation for the coming months. It’s a beautiful and bountiful time to be in the garden as the growing season reaches fruition. It’s a good time to clear spent growth and have a tidy up as most plants are now slowing down and resting (leave some areas untouched to help your wildlife friends). This also allows you to see how the framework of your garden is shaping up. I like to think of the flowers and greenery as the clothes a garden is wearing. These change throughout the year and add varying colours and textures. However, the structure is just as important as this displays the plant wardrobe. Why not consider adding structure to your garden ready for next year’s floral display. A small addition such as a natural stone trough would

give visual interest and create a new habitat; a larger patio and pond would offer an area to enjoy the garden whilst supporting an aquatic ecosystem. You could even consider a total redesign and overhaul to put your own unique touch on your plot. Gardens can be truly special places when you get them just right.

If you want to create your own private sanctum or require any help with garden design and construction then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes (BSc (Hons) Environmental Conservation) on 07739071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk

Plants in Focus: Colour & Structure Kashmir birch – Betula utilis var. jacquemontii A vigorous deciduous birch tree (15-20m) offering a structural backdrop of brilliant white stems and yellow autumn colour. Dogwood – Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ A small deciduous shrub that provides warm red and yellow stems to the garden in winter.

Sweet box – Sarcococca confusa An evergreen shrub providing a foil for brighter plants that also has scrumptiously sweet smelling flowers in winter.

Happy Gardening!

Wildlife Corner

Increase & support biodiversity As discussed previously, the secret to a healthy garden is the amount of biodiversity that it is able to support. This means you’ve got to think of as many ways as possible to give life a chance to flourish in your little paradise. A way I often do this is by creating areas of water.

Water will create new habitats, develop new species populations and help the creatures that you already have. This in turn will build garden health as well as offering a great chance to enjoy new flora and fauna at home.

Water can take the form of a wildlife pond, a bog area or simply a stone trough half filled. The options are endless just like the diverse nature they will support.

Bus operator goes ahead with additional service North Yorkshire County Council has welcomed a decision by the bus operator, Transdev, to introduce an additional regular commercial service between Harrogate and Boroughbridge. As part of its consultation to reduce the amount spent subsidising bus services, the county council has asked operators to look for additional opportunities for commercial services. “We recognise the need to develop transport services across this largely rural county, but the county council must find savings equal to a third of its budget,” said County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Public Transport. “For this reason we consulted widely on our proposals to reduce bus service subsidies and we are working hard to find new solutions to transport needs. “As part of this we asked existing operators to look for ways of expanding their commercial routes and boosting their passenger numbers.

“Transdev has made a tremendous response both in providing this new service and making a commitment to grow passenger numbers on services 142 and 143,” added Cllr Mackenzie. This was a service where we had proposed a reduction, however by working closely with the operator we are confident we can retain the existing level of service.” Alex Hornby, Chief Executive at Transdev said: “It’s so important to get more people on board the bus and we are pleased to do our bit as a commercial operator, working in partnership with our colleagues at North Yorkshire CC, and stepping in at a time when public savings need to be made. “The original consultation risked that Boroughbridge would suffer a reduced service, but instead we are introducing additional buses and more routes. Despite a reduction in public funding, the RiponYork ‘Cathedral Connection’ will be maintained in full on routes 142 & 143. This will be alongside a new, fully commercial route 1A between Boroughbridge,

Knaresborough and Harrogate every hour Monday to Saturday. The end result is actually better news for Boroughbridge residents, and will bring more people and more business into the town.” Councillor Rebecca Burnett, Harrogate Borough Council’s cabinet member for Planning and Sustainable Transport said: “It is important that we have good provision of public transport across the district and this new regular direct service between Harrogate to Boroughbridge provides a much needed additional link. It is great news for commuters and shoppers who can consider leaving the car at home. It will also give non-drivers greater freedom and more choice as to when they wish to travel.”

One-stop shop opens for Nidderdale services

A volunteer-run one stop shop for services has officially opened in Pateley Bridge bringing together the library, tourist information centre and community transport for people living in Nidderdale. The new community hub is the home of Nidderdale Plus, a not for profit organisation of local people, and brings a range of services and business support under one roof ,making them easily accessible and extending their opening hours to seven days a week. The hub is run by 16 volunteers, as well as the 16 drivers which run the community car, a flexible transport solution for people needing access to services. Nidderdale Plus is supported by a variety of organisations, all with representatives at the launch last week, including North Yorkshire County Council, Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire Police, to provide an access point for their services. The County Council has contributed £20,000 towards adapting and improving the double-fronted building a former fish and chip shop in Station Square, King Street - and in supporting Nidderdale Plus to gain charitable status. The council will also contribute to running costs, and providing book stock and staff training and support for the library. “The new hub is already proving extremely popular” said Katy Penn, partnership manager for Nidderdale Plus. “The library has been extremely busy, with lots of children using it and 20 new members signing up in the first week. The new building, with everything under one roof, means that more services are more accessible and therefore more sustainable to serve our largely rural communities. It is proving very popular and very busy”. The new hub has become a colourful presence in the

town and is centrally placed, close to GP services and the bus stop. It is the first of the county council’s next phase of community libraries and is a forerunner project of its Stronger Communities programme. This programme is aimed at supporting and empowering communities to provide a range of services for local people that fully utilise all local assets, prevent loneliness, support troubled families and contribute to healthier lifestyles. County Councillor David Jeffels, Chairman of North Yorkshire County Council, speaking at the opening, praised everyone involved in establishing the new centre. “It has been a splendid example of local authorities and several other agencies, working together to provide what I am certain could well become an exemplar not just in North Yorkshire, but in small towns throughout the country. “A great deal of hard work and planning has gone into supporting Nidderdale Plus with so many volunteers, which I am sure will be an enormous benefit to those in Pateley Bridge and its surrounding villages as well as the many tourists who visit this lovely town.” Councillor Graham Swift, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, Economic Development and Enterprise said: “Projects such as these ensure that our rural towns receive important services which are delivered in an efficient manner. This is particularly

Smile with Confidence Could cosmetic dentistry help? Our smile is one of the first things that people notice about us, so a mouth full of stained, chipped or crooked teeth can really affect our confidence. Cosmetic dentistry ranges from small changes, such as crowning a chipped tooth, to whole-mouth makeovers. Common procedures include:

Bleaching Teeth can be stained by smoking, some medications and certain food and drink. Most stains can be removed by regular scale and polish appointments, but others are harder to shift. Also, teeth naturally differ in colour, so some people will have naturally whiter teeth than others. Bleaching is usually done over the course of a few weeks, although laser bleaching can give you noticeable results, in less time. The bleaching product is painted onto your teeth, and activated by the laser. Teeth can sometimes feel a little more sensitive during treatment and gums can be a bit sore, but results can be pretty dramatic, with teeth up to six shades whiter. The effect can last for up to three years.

Straightening Another common cosmetic procedure is straightening or moving teeth slightly. This is usually done with orthodontic braces. If you have an image of a spotty teen with metal train tracks, you might be surprised to find out that more and more adults are getting them, and many of today’s braces are a world away from the unsightly ones of a few years ago. ‘Invisible braces’, for example, are clear plastic moulds that fit over your teeth. They’re not very noticeable and can be taken out for eating and brushing. They do need changing every few weeks, to fit your changing bite, so can work out more expensive than traditional fixed braces. Teeth-straightening is a gradual process and usually takes one to two years. The effect is pretty permanent, although teeth may move slightly as the years go by.

Replacing missing teeth There are different ways to replace missing teeth. The

14

infocus

best choice usually depends on how many teeth are missing, where the gap is, and what condition your other teeth are in. You could opt for a partial denture, which can be removed. Alternatively, a bridge can be fixed onto remaining teeth, or onto implants (artificial roots). Is it for you? Only you can decide whether you want to have work done and if so, how far to go. We’ve all seen the ‘Hollywood smiles’ – those too white, too straight, too perfect sets of teeth that just look a bit false. Sometimes it’s the minor imperfections that make us who we are. Would Claudia Schiffer have been as distinctive if she’d had her teeth ‘fixed’? By Kate Duggan

Why Counselling Might Help

‘A problem shared is a problem halved’. The death of a loved one, depression, redundancy at work, unfulfilled life’s ambitions, anxiety, wanting to understand others better and wanting to feel more confident are personal challenges we all may face at some time. Sharing our concerns with qualified, trained professionals can help, and following are some of the talking therapies on offer. Counselling is available to all people and may be obtained on the NHS following a referral from your doctor. All sessions are conducted in complete confidence by counsellors who have undergone extensive study and training before being registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Counselling may also be provided by other professional bodies such as Relate and ChildLine (a voluntary organisation), for which there may sometimes be a charge. Evidence shows that counselling is very effective. For example, B Wickberg and C P Hwang found that 80% of women with major post-natal depression were fully recovered after treatment. Counselling can help a person be more positive, worry less and feel more confident. Additional types of counselling/ therapies include the following: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is currently very popular and helps people to manage problems by changing the way they think and behave. Negative patterns of thought about self and the world are challenged to develop a more positive outlook. Patients set goals with the therapist

during sessions, which they work on in between sessions. This therapy is proven to help with mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and phobias. Information on CBT may also be found via self-help books and online computer courses. Couples Counselling (Marriage Guidance) involves a couple and a therapist. The main aim is to improve communication and resolve problems such as lack of trust, abuse, life changes and family contacts faced by intimate couples. Couples look at how factors such as lifestyle, religion and family values affect their relationship and are encouraged to resolve any conflicts they face together. Psychotherapy looks into a person’s past and how that affects the present. This is undertaken over a longer period of time than other forms of counselling and helps a person understand more about themselves, improve relations with others and enjoy life more.

Other therapies use different tools to meet people’s needs, for example play therapy finds what causes excessive anger, fear and worry in children through play; arts therapies (music, art and drama) help people express their feelings without having to use words. Whatever our problems may be, we truly need not feel alone. Help is only a telephone call or a visit away, should we need it. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

The History of Fireworks Fireworks have been around for as long as we can remember and date back to 200BC. Chinese people discovered that by putting green bamboo stalks over fire, the wood expanded and created a bang and sparks. This wood dried to create a flaky powder, hence, fireworks were born. These scared off enemies and the Chinese thought they also warded off evil spirits. They made war weaponry by filling the stalks with the gunpowder, and shot these as arrows. Marco Polo is credited with introducing fireworks to Europe but it is thought throughout the Middle East they were used even earlier, as Arabs used gunpowder obtained through the silk trade during the Crusades. Italian pyrotechnicians created the aerial shell, where the fireworks are launched upwards

to create a majestic array of colours. But how do we get these vibrant colours? Well, metal salts are put into ‘stars’ (small clay lumps), which when lit create the sound and visual light effects which delight adults and children alike. Fireworks are used for all manner of celebrations today – and whether it’s U.S. Independence Day in America, Diwali in November, or the Don Valley Grass Bowl in Sheffield in Yorkshire, family and friends gather to enjoy the marvellous visual delights and sounds of an invention which began by just heating a piece of wood! Perfect Parkin A bonfire night treat Serves 12 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes

Ingredients 225g / 8oz Plain flour 2 level tsps Ground ginger 1 level tsp Bicarbonate of Soda ½ level tsp salt 225g /8oz Medium oatmeal 115g / 4oz Black treacle 115g / 4oz Golden syrup 115g / 4oz Soft light-brown sugar 115g /4 oz Unsalted butter 150ml / 5floz Milk 1 Egg - beaten

Method Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas mk 4. Grease and line a 30 x 25 x 5 cm (12 x 10 x 2 inch) roasting tin with grease-proof paper. Place the treacle, golden syrup, sugar and butter into a heavy-bottomed saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Remove from the heat. Allow to cool a little then beat in the milk and the egg. Sift the flour, ginger, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Stir in the oatmeal and make a well in the centre. Pour the liquid mixture into the well and beat thoroughly. Pour into the roasting tin and bake in the centre of the oven until firm and springy. Leave to cool in the tin. When cold wrap in greaseproof paper and leave for a couple of days in an airtight tin, because the flavour of Parkin improves with keeping.

About the Appeal

Audrey’s birthday bonus for scanner THE FRIARAGE Hospital’s MRI scanner appeal has received a boost thanks to octogenarian, Audrey Elsworth. Caring Audrey celebrated her 80th birthday in style with 45 of her family and friends at the King’s Head in Masham asking for donations in lieu of gifts. Thanks to everyone’s generosity both the scanner appeal and the Great North Air Ambulance benefitted from a £150 donation. Audrey from Little Crakehall, Bedale, said: “A get together with family and friends is all I needed to celebrate. Nobody knows what to do with

presents at 80 years old! “I wanted to help local good causes in North Yorkshire. You never know when you might need a scan and I am delighted to support the scanner appeal at my local hospital, the Friarage in Northallerton Suzi Cambell from the appeal’s office, said: “I would like to say a big thank you to Audrey and all her family and friends for their support. We hope she had a very happy birthday and enjoyed the celebrations. We much appreciate her giving up her birthday treats to help us.”

South Tees Hospitals Charity first major fundraising campaign – in partnership with the Friends of the Friarage - is to raise £2million for an MRI scanner - an essential piece of medical equipment used to investigate almost any part of the body – at the Friarage Hospital. About MRI scanners: An MRI scanner is an essential piece of medical equipment used to investigate almost any part of the body and will be a valuable resource for the medical teams at the Friarage, MRI scanners are increasingly used to diagnose a wide range of health conditions and the trust carries out over 17,000 scans every year – 7,000 of which are for patients living in the Hambleton and Richmondshire area although this figure is set to increase year-on-year. Currently North Yorkshire patients have to make the journey to Middlesbrough or other hospitals for their tests. Benefits of having an MRI scanner at the Friarage include:

FRED MACAULAY Twenty Fifteen One of Scotland’s most beloved comedians and star of BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz, Bridget Christie Minds The Gap and The Unbelievable Truth, Fred MacAulay is back on the road this autumn with a brand new show. In his first tour since 2012, Fred looks at his family life at home and looks forward to how his country will shape up after the referendum of 2014. As well as looking backwards and forwards, he’ll probably look sideways at politics, sport, the environment and, without sounding too like a brief for a newspaper, there will undoubtedly be a colour supplement with a look at ‘celebrity’. 2015 is a hugely significant year for the long-running BBC Scotland presenter. Back on the road again after 18 years at BBC Radio Scotland presenting the very funny and eventful MacAulay and Co., Fred’s on air witticisms and on screen reputation are the product of years of experience on the live circuit, including a stint as the first ever-Scottish compere at the Comedy Store in London. He is a regular favourite at the Edinburgh Fringe (this year will be his 27th!).

He has a string of TV appearances under his sporran, from Mock the Week, QI and Have I Got News For You to a guest-spot on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in the US. He has presented many programmes for the BBC, including McCoist and MacAulay, Life According to Fred, Hoots, Simply Fred, Scots on the Box and On The Road with Martell Maxwell, and he lasted 7 out of 11 nights when he sang on Comic Relief Does Fame Academy! Further charity challenges saw him kayak the Caledonian Canal for Sport Relief in temperatures as low as -18 Celsius and scale Mt Kilimanjaro. His West Highland Way-hey walk was broadcast on Hogmanay 2012 on STV. He has also gueststarred on various Radio 4 panel shows such as I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, Just A Minute, The Unbelievable Truth and is a regular panelist on The News Quiz. www.fredmacaulay.com Twitter: @fredmacaulay Age restriction: 16+

Local Battle of Britain Hero Celebrated When it was first released, Men of the Battle of Britain became the standard work of reference on the aircrew who took part in the Battle of Britain. Now it has been painstakingly revised, updated and many new photographs have been included for the 75th anniversary of the Battle. Among the brave men recounted in this volume is Thomas Brian Kirk. Kirk was born in 1919 in Thornton-le-street, but the family later moved to west Harlsey and Kirk attended nearby Northallerton Grammar School.

However, Kirk himself was shot down on 20th of October, was severely wounded and was declared ‘phisically unfit for Air Service’. He died of his

Remembrance Day

Following the end of the First World War, my grandfather travelled to France and spent several months burying the dead. This experience affected him forever. The Great War started in 1914, and after four years of bitter fighting the guns of Europe finally fell silent at 11am on 11th November 1918 – six hours after the armistice was signed in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France.

The following year, King George V sent out a proclamation requesting that a 2 minute silence be held, so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”. Since that first Armistice Day in 1919, a two minute silence has been observed yearly at war memorials and other public places at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh

month, and on the second Sunday of November. After the end of the Second World War, Armistice Day became known as Remembrance Day, to include those who had fallen in WWII and other conflicts. Twelve thousand British servicemen and women have been killed or injured since 1945. In the words of the poet Robert Binyon:

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Local singer, songwriter Jamie Bevan has been invited to compose and record a Remembrance single in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2015. Jamie has volunteered for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal over recent years and now releases his single due in October, all proceeds to the Poppy appeal in honour of the fallen. Jamie Bevan is a welsh born singer / songwriter and guitarist currently based Knaresborough. His music (heavily influenced by the autobiographical) encompasses a blend of acoustic melodic rhythms

with rootsy indie-folk undertones. Jamie was offered the support from a local Leeds based recording studio and together they are recording and beginning the promotion of his first EP entitled ‘What Docey Broke’ (due 10/11/15). Jamie has volunteered for the Royal British Legion for the last two years, selling poppies and raising over £1000. He wanted to combine his new venture with the charity and so, with gracious support from the Royal British Legion, he is producing a charity acoustic single for the appeal which will be released this October. www.jamiebevanmusic.co.uk

GARDEN VIEW

Terrific Tulips If I could grow only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip. Harbingers of warmer days, the choice available is mind-blowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms. They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas!

My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year. If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm / 4 inches deep. If, like me, you treat them as old friends then plant them 23cm / 9 inches deep and they won’t disappoint you. By Rachel Leverton

Pot Luck Tulips are wonderful in containers. As a guide, a 25-30cm / 10-12 inch diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm / 19inch pot use 16 –18 bulbs. Cover the base with at least 5cm / 2inches of drainage material and 12cm / 5 inches of soil-less multipurpose compost. Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot. Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm / 1 inch of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in

26

frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout their flowering season in the Autumn and the Spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May. I love to plant containers of tulips by my front door. I have a red door so choose something like Tulipa ‘Apeldoorn’ in yellow and red varieties underplanted with red daisies. If you have a blue or green door you might like to try Tulipa ‘Angelique’ (pale pink) underplanted with pink anemones. Or how about Tulipa ‘Bleu Aimable’ a brilliant purple/blue variety?
