Projects include an outdoor leisure space and an indoor learning zone. A fully fitted IT suite and new workshop technologies are a vital component in these enhancements. Much has changed since June 2004 when the Countess of Wessex officially opened Jennyruth Workshops. Today, a significant proportion is bespoke orders. For example, current projects include a huge wonky playhouse for a local school and 25, five feet tall wooden monks for Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds. There is no end to the skills and talents of the workers who are able to turn their hand to a wide variety of projects. Creating stories, story boards and delivering quality school workshops are a further skill. Local Family Man is all set to clean up in Northallerton, Ripon and surrounding areas. Terry Taggart has launched his own Oven Cleaning Business as part of the Oven Wizards Franchise. Terry has lived in the local area for nearly 30 years, and, as he knows the area really well, he believes there will be a strong demand for his services. Terry says “I was looking for a business idea that would be something I would enjoy doing and that would provide a great service to local people. I came across the idea of an oven cleaning business and then started to research the market. I soon realised that becoming an Oven Wizard offered me a great opportunity, particularly with the support of a successful Franchise Brand”.

Mark Abbott, owner of the Oven Wizards business said “From the first time we met Terry, we knew he would make a great success of running an Oven Wizards Franchise, particularly because of his great passion for customer service. There is a growing demand from people who want to have their oven’s professionally cleaned because it is probably the hardest and most hated job in most households ”. Oven Wizards have provided Terry with comprehensive training which will enable him to professionally clean all sorts of makes and models of ovens. As well as Northallerton and Ripon Terry also covers Thirsk, Yarm, Stokesley and Bedale.

Exciting new shop in Ripon for an established business Skell Wrought Iron (J. Clarke & Sons) was founded in 1957 by Ripon craftsman John Clarke, and is run today by his son Chris and partner Liz. Since taking over the business in 1999, Chris has worked hard to maintain the high standards of work produced by Skell Wrought Iron and to continue to provide the excellent service their customers are used too. Whilst trading in Handpicked Hall alongside their successful workshop and online business, Liz took the opportunity to launch a new side to the business, selling cast iron home and garden accessories, hence the name “Castaway Home & Garden”. Castaway quickly expanded to sell an extensive range of garden products and proved to be very successful. This success, coupled with Skell Wrought Iron’s growing client list, led to the opening of the new shop at 24 High Skellgate, Ripon, in mid February. Skell Wrought Iron specialises in high quality, hand crafted ironwork, including: gates, railings, weathervanes, rose arches, hand rails, welly holders (A best seller in the shop!) bird feeders and any bespoke items to customer requirements.
Castaway sells garden planters, fireside acce s s o r i e s , wall art, candle holders, clocks and a wide range of items for both home and garden as well as gifts for all occasions and their ever popular bottle holders. They also now stock a range of quality rugs, footstools and cushions, many of which are handmade in India and Africa and are Fair Trade. Nature in the Garden
Buds are bursting and sap is on the rise, you can almost hear the garden grow! There will soon be a mountain of jobs to get through so try to keep on top of them now as the growing season gains pace. Extra sunlight and warmer temperatures bring our gardens to life and the flush of summer is just around the corner. However, Jack Frost could yet make another appearance so keep an eye on the weather forecasts in order to protect your vulnerable plants. This year, why not create a new habitat in your garden. There are so many options to choose from. Wildlife requires a range of different environments in which to thrive. In fact, the more varied the habitat then the more diverse it’s inhabitants will be. Try something new! This could range from a selection of slates laid on edge for invertebrates, to a wildflower meadow, or even a bog garden area. Let your imagination run wild. For instance, if you have a dry area then you could aim at creating a bog garden. You can develop this new habitat by using pond liner, a water source and a selection of bog plants. This will help to attract
dragonflies, damselflies and even our native frogs and toads. The trick is to make it as appealing as possible to the wildlife. They need cover for protection, food for survival and then nature will do it’s thing. Why not take a moment to consider how you might grow your space in 2014. Everybody has their own style and your particular blend of tastes can be translated into your own area. If you have any questions regarding your garden then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes (BSc (Hons) Environmental Conservation) on 07739071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk
Plants in Focus:
3 Wetland Wonders Poor Man’s Umbrella – Gunnera manicata An impressive, tall (3m) and spreading perennial originating in tropical Brazilian and Colombian cloud forests. This half-hardy plant requires special care but will reward you with spectacular leaves and imposing flower spikes.
Water Mint – Mentha aquatica A hardy, vigorously spreading plant (90cm tall/75cm width). It produces lilac flowers with aromatic foliage and is particularly benefical to insects.
Flowering Rush – Butomus umbellatus A submerged rhizomatus perennial growing to 1.5m tall. This variety produces pink flowers held in umbels and supports both dragonflies and damselflies.
Happy Gardening!
Wildlife Corner – Creating Habitats There are a number of things you can do in your garden to make new habitats for wildlife. Here are three mini-projects for you to try out at home: O Build a bug hotel – bugs love nooks and crannies. You can stack up old bamboo canes, bits of pipe, tiles and slates and whatever is to hand to build up a perfect beetle hotspot. Place your construction out of direct sunlight to tempt in new residents and give it a roof. You should create different sized holes for your little bug friends. O Create a rotting woodpile instead of cleaning away garden branches you can start an invertebrate wood haven. Ideally, start with a few well-rotted pieces of wood and submerge one third of these into the soil. Then place new pieces over the pile and add to it as and when you have them. The wood will break down and
supply food and cover for a range of insect life. O Develop a wild area – select an area of garden to go wild this year. It would work well in an unused corner or next to a boundary. Leaving plants to grow tall and unruly will create all kinds of creature walkways, big and small, as well as providing a refuge for nature on the border of your garden. If you tidy everything up then they’ve got nowhere to hide from predatory eyes.

Proper mushy peas Soak 150g dried marrow fat peas in cold water over night in a tub much larger than you think of water in as they will expand by arou with plenty nd double and end up all over your kitchen floor! Short crust pastry 225g plain flour 115g unsalted butter 30g beaten egg 1 egg yolk for glazing Pinch salt
Add the soaked peas into a pan again much larger than you would think as the peas will try to rush up and over the side of your pan. just cover with water, add one teaspoon or bicarbonate of soda and a good pinch of salt. cook on a medium heat and use a ladle to skim any impu rities that rise to the top of the pan. continue cooking until they resemble mushy peas and add salt to taste.
Beat the flour, salt and butter in a mixer with paddle attachment until it resembles fine crumbs. Add the beaten egg and briefly mix until the dough comes together. Remove from mixer and knead for 10 seconds to flatten the pastr y, then wrap in cling film and leave in fridge for 20 mins. Lightly flour a clean surface and roll your pastry out to fit your pie dish. Fill your dish with your duck filling, lay your pastry over the top and crimp the edges of the pastr y and trim the excess. Glaze with egg yolk using a pastry brush . Cook in a pre heated oven at 175 degre es u until piping hot and golden

GARDEN VIEW
Climbing the walls!
If your garden is short on space, rammed with plants, or you simply have an unsightly vertical surface to cover, climbing plants can be used to great effect: from clothing frameworks such as pergolas and arches to hiding sheds and even neighbours!
Whether it’s as fast growing as a Triffid, a dainty floral twiner, or an evergreen clinger, I’m certain there’s a climber out there for you, it’s just a case of meeting your perfect match. For those of you lucky enough to have a southfacing doorway, why not spoil yourself with the highly scented fragrance of Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). Not only is it evergreen, but it boasts the added benefit of a claret-red leaf colour in autumn. For those with a north-facing entrance, how about a plant combo starting with an early flowering Clematis tolerant of shade, such as ‘Frances Rivis’, followed by the stunning pink flowers of Rosa ‘Zephirine Drouhin’, perfect in shade with the added bonus of being a thornless variety. If it’s a shady spot and a fast growing evergreen you require you really can’t beat Ivy, but I understand many people are not huge fans, so why not put in the extra effort and seek out a great alternative known as Pileostegia viburnoides. It’s a bit of a mouthful but not only is it evergreen, it will provide white flowers in summer and like Ivy is a self clinger, but nowhere near as vigorous.

As well as the other common examples, such as Wisteria (only plant this in full sun and if you are prepared to tie it in and prune it twice annually), Honeysuckle and Pyracantha (great for deterring intruders due to its woody thorns), there is a whole range of other shrubs which can be grown against a wall or fence, not forgetting trees of course, such as the beautiful trained fruit trees we often see in Victorian walled gardens.
they will look great in your garden rather than flopping over the fence and delighting your neighbour – now that really would drive me up the garden wall!
Shrubs planted at around 30cm away from the base of the wall or fence can be manually tied in and make excellent wall cover, often with the added benefit of flowers. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ for example, or Garrya elliptica make unusual evergreen wall coverings, and look great with a second flowering climber twining through. Don’t forget the huge variety of annuals available which you can grow from seed, such as Sweet Peas, Morning Glory, or maybe try climbing French beans as an edible wall covering?

year, put the supports in now so the plants grow up through them. m Check any tree ties to make sure the tie is not cutting into the trunk. Loosen any that are tight to allow room to expand. m Once the soil has warmed up, weed borders and apply a moisture-retaining mulch such as compost or bark.
Do ensure that you provide sturdy wires for plants to travel up. The best and most costeffective way is simply to fix vine eyes (spaced horizontally around 2m apart) to the fence or wall and vertically at 30cm intervals. Then use a taught network of galvanised wires to provide support. Be sure to tie climbers in horizontally ERH RSX ZIVXMGEPP] EW QSWX TISTPI HS XLMW [E]

Saturday 5th July Tour de France Grand Départ 2014
Masham is blessed with several large spaces both for gathering and for parking, which makes it a great destination for the weekend of the Grand Départ. The evening before the race will see live music on the Shooting Holme, and a gala concert by Joe Longthorne at Masham Town Hall. On Sat 5th July, there will be three main areas to enjoy the day: Low Burton which offers the best views of the route as the peloton (the main bunch of riders) slows to negotiate two rightangled turns. The Shooting Holme and Recreation Field where there will be a wide range of food, drink and entertainment, including the Big Screen provided by Harrogate Borough Council. The Market Place which will offer gear change from the race with opportunities to relax and shop. The race itself starts at 11:00am in Leeds and covers 190km (125 miles), finishing in Harrogate going uphill (the wrong way) on Parliament Street.
