This new aspect of his business came about from customer requests. “Many people who came to have medals mounted or framed would ask about engraving too,” says Barry, “So I realized there was a gap in the market for that service locally, for sporting events or academic achievements for example, and it fits very well with my existing skills and business”.

A Guide to Protecting Your Business “Protecting the key people who are driving your business forward’ Every business has key people who are driving it forward. Many businesses recognise the need to insure their commercial property, equipment and fixed assets. However, they continually overlook their most important assets, the people who drive the business – a key employee, director or shareholder.

What type of key person insurance is available? There are various options to choose from, including life cover only, critical illness cover, or a combination of the both. You can select different levels of cover and terms depending on your specific requirements. There are also policies that pay out a regular income in the event of sickness.

What is key person insurance? This is designed to compensate a business for the financial loss brought about by the death or critical illness of a key employee, such as the company director or other integral member of staff. It can provide a valuable cash injection to the business to aid a potential loss of turnover and provide funds to replace the key person.

How is a key person policy taxed? There is no direct legislation on how a key person policy is taxed, which means you should always consult your inspector of taxes to ensure the correct treatment of any premium and benefit payment. As a general guideline, there tends to be a tax liability either on the way in or the way out with any protection insurance policy. If tax relief has been allowed on the premiums then any benefit payable would be taxable. If the premiums have been taxed at the outset then any benefit payable is likely to be paid tax free.

How could your business benefit from key person insurance? You cannot replace the loss of a key person, but you can protect against the financial burden such an event may cause. Without the right cover in place you could also risk losing your business. Key person insurance can be used in a number of different ways, e.g. to repay any loans; to help recruit and fund the training costs for replacement staff; to meet the ongoing expenses while the level of sales recover; or to facilitate payments for outside consultants or expert advice that may be required.

How is the level of cover calculated? The cover required is measured as follows; by the key person’s contribution to profits of the business; the effect that the loss of the key person would have on the future profitability; the anticipated cost of recruiting and or training a replacement; the expected recovery period; and the amount of any loan(s) that would be called in on the death of the key person.

Jennyruth Workshops: Spring Update

Goosander Box for High Batts Nature Reserve

On a windy January morning a small group of Jennyruth workers, staff and volunteers went to visit High Batts Nature Reserve to deliver a hand crafted goosander box. We met Colin Slater, chairman of High Batts near North Stainley, who gave us a guided tour of the reserve. We were shown the birdwatching hides and using binoculars we saw redpolls and bramblings. Colin showed us where the new goosander box will be placed and invited us to visit later in the year to see if it in use.

As goosanders nest in holes in mature trees, the nesting boxes are tall and replicate the hollow tree trunk and are a very different box to our usual bird boxes. Oliver really enjoyed making the box with Steve, a volunteer. “I love it. I was proud of myself when we delivered it.” For more information on High Batts visit www.highbatts.wordpress.com

...and not forgetting the bees... Not only have Jennyruth Workshops designed and made a new range of bee homes but they have also taken part in a swarm of bees workshop. The Swarm of Bees Printmaking Project, run by Artist and Beekeeper Laney Birkhead, aims to print 50,000 bees to raise awareness of bee decline and how we can all help. She has visited many schools and community

groups to help her with this important project. “Swarm Workshop at Ripon at the wonderful Jennyruth Workshops…. lots more bees were printed as part of my project - now at 35,000 bees! A big buzzy thank you to all at Jennyruth for such a great day!” Laney Birkhead. For more information about this project and exhibitions of the prints visit http://laneybirkhead. com/Swarm-of-Bees-PrintmakingProject.

Lightwater Valley Challenge Run 2016 Jennyruth Workshops were asked by Sharron Cooney, race director, to make 425 medals and 6 trophies for the Lightwater Valley 10k challenge which took place on Saturday 5th March. The day was beautiful, cold but sunny; there were three races, children, adults and a fun run. All the runners that took part in the race received a medal handed out to them by workers, staff and volunteers at Jennyruth Workshops. Lots of people made the medals, first of all Tony and Rebekah designed them and it was very hard work.

Oliver was supported by Tony to cut the medals and trophies with the laser cutter. Oliver really enjoyed doing this. Jamie helped with the designing and sanding which he found very rewarding. Bethany Evason, Rachael Addison, Matthew Evason, Anna Smith, Bryony Carrigan and Denise Carrigan all presented the medals on the day. Bethany said, ‘it was so nice to give the runners a medal that I had helped to make’.

100,000

reasons to be happy

Record number of visitors to Ripon Spa Gardens Things are looking rosy at Ripon Spa Gardens after the award winning park attracted a record number of visitors over the last twelve months. Since March 2013, Harrogate Borough Council has being using an electronic counting device to record the number of visits made to Ripon Spa Gardens. Over the last year over 100,000 visits have been made – an annual increase of over 18,000. The news comes shortly after the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) released figures which revealed that more people are choosing parks and gardens for a day out, with visitor numbers to gardens in the UK increasing by 3.5% in 2015. Located in the heart of Ripon, Spa Gardens has long been recognised as one of the best green spaces in the UK. The park was awarded its first Green Flag from Keep Britain Tidy in 2001. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the park boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Ripon Spa Gardens now holds the record for the most Green Flags in the region having being presented with its 15th in 2015. The park boasts a Victorian bandstand, which hosts band concerts on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer months, the popular Sun Parlour café, crazy golf, a magnificent bowling pavilion and bowling green, colourful flower displays and many other facilities. A popular attraction is the set of chainsaw carvings in the gardens depicting characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - Alice, Caterpillar, White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. Inspiration for the novel is believed to have come from carvings in Ripon Cathedral.

This year, the flower beds within the gardens will be designed to celebrate the anniversaries of some of the UK’s greatest authors and playwrights including Beatrix Potter, Charlotte Bronte, Roald Dahl and William Shakespeare. Councillor Michael Harrison, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “It is fantastic to see that the number of visitors to Ripon Spa Gardens continues to grow. It is undoubtedly one of the region’s finest parks and plays an important role in cementing our reputation as one of the country’s best floral districts. With so much to see and do, it is no surprise that the gardens attract so many visitors. “Our parks team, together with the Friends of Spa Gardens and Spa Park, work tirelessly to maintain and improve the gardens to ensure that they look as good as they possibly can. It is a real community effort. We are continually looking to see what new experiences we can introduce for visitors. There is no doubt that the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland wood carvings have been a real draw, and we are always thinking about what we can do with our flower displays to surprise visitors. We look forward to welcoming even more people to the gardens this year.” If you are interested in finding out more about the Friends of Spa Gardens and Spa Park group please contact community@harrogate.gov.uk

Nature

Creating spac es for yourself, family and wil dlife

in the Garden

Nature’s palette is changing as life’s rhythms pick up the pace for the growing season ahead. It’s a fantastic time of year, laden with promise and splashes of spring-blushed colour. So why not get into your garden to get your hands dirty or just to relax, unwind and let your troubles float away. Make the most of your time off this year and enjoy carefree days in your own island of calm. We all thrive in a stress free environment and it’s important to take a break. Therefore, think about what you want from your garden and how you’d like to create your haven. Maybe you like clean, contemporary lines, or alternatively, a traditional, natural feel. You can use it as an extension of your living space, watch wildlife at play or even simply

Plants in Focus: Wonderful Wisteria

watch the blossoms come and go throughout the seasons. At Timothy Campbell Landscapes, we take the time to get things just right for you. We create gardens with passion, care and with a personal touch. If you want a bespoke design and/or build to create your own

beautiful, unique space then please contact Tim on 07739071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk

The graceful Wisteria is one of my favourite plant families. There are ten species altogether and they come from the eastern United States, Japan and China and are fully hardy. Although not native to the UK they thrive in our conditions. We mainly grow them as climbers but they can do particularly well as pot grown standards too. They prefer full sun and a welldrained, fertile soil. If you get the growing conditions right

and prune them well you will be rewarded by growth of up to 10m in height. Importantly for lovers of blooms, they can also produce a fantastic spring display of weeping, scented flowers that are a real visual treat. I recommend: Wisteria macrobotrys floribunda

Happy Gardening!

Wildlife Corner: Wildilife Corridors A lot of our wildlife appreciate a bit of protection whilst they’re on the move. There are countless ways to provide this but the main point is to ensure that a connecting corridor is available between areas for them. For example, small mammals will use hedge or fence bottoms, perennial beds or horizontal drain pipes as a highway from one feeding area to another. Whilst planning your garden aim to incorporate a few wild highways to

keep your friends coming back for more whilst ensuring their safety from their natural predators. Go on, give it a go. For more wildlife ideas check out our previous editorials in the news section at: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk

New business aims to stop pain I used to think massage was just something people had at spas to help them relax. It was only when I started to suffer from chronic pain myself that I realised what massage can really do. As a keen runner I have experienced overuse injuries and strains, and I have also suffered neck and back pain and stress from working at a desk all day. Physiotherapy helped initially, but for me what made the biggest difference was massage therapy. I couldn’t believe the difference such hands-on treatment made and I wanted to learn more. I subsequently qualified as a Remedial Massage Therapist at the renowned Northern Institute of Massage, and now have my own practice at Boroughbridge, where I find it extremely rewarding helping people to feel better every day. We take our cars for regular maintenance, but do we look after our bodies in the same way? Most of us ignore pains and niggles for as long as we can, yet this is the body’s way of trying to tell us we need some TLC. Early treatment with massage can nip these problems in the bud. And if you have chronic, long term conditions don’t despair - massage therapy can treat both acute and chronic conditions. Massage can relieve pain and stress, improve mobility, accelerate recovery, and prevent further injury, and I work with a wide variety of clients, currently from 13 to 84 years old, to help treat illness, painful conditions, injury rehabilitation and disability. Like getting out & about? So do the people we help! The Ripon and Rural Voluntary Car Driving Service provides a lifeline to local people who are unable to get out easily. Our team of volunteer drivers helps people living in Ripon, Masham and Pateley Bridge, who are unable to access public transport due to mobility or location, to get to: • Medical and dental appointments • Day centres and lunch clubs • Visit a sick relative • Shopping Last year alone, our drivers gave 837 hours of their time to undertake over 2000 journeys for 160 people. Without this help many local people would have been unable to get to their medical appointments, go shopping or see friends.

Hellebore

Also known as a Lenten rose or Christmas rose, hellebores produce spring flowers of delicate beauty and surprising resilience. In warmer climates, it may even tolerate light frosts, making it one of the best flowers to plant in spring. For unusual flowers, ask at your nursery about double-bloom varieties.

Pansy

Cool weather is just what pansy prefers. It’s an annual that gardeners flock to because it’s one of the best flowers to plant in spring for early-season containers and window boxes, relishing the variety in petal color as much as the cheery uplifted blooms.

‘Acoma’ Iris

Pick your favorite color, and there’s likely an iris to fill your spring garden need. Most put on their bloom show toward the end of spring, but the plants’ tall growth and delectable petal variations make them pretty additions to a variety of garden styles.

Snowdrop Anemone

Fragrant and festive, the bright clusters of snowdrop anemone work well even in a spring garden that’s slightly shaded. Bonus: Once the cooler temperatures of Autumn arrive, the plant may put on a second bloom show in the garden.

#FurtherOnUpTheRoad

From The Skip To The Stage!

Masham based luthiers and designers, The Raw Guitar Co., are putting on a promotional rock show at Masham Town Hall on Saturday 7th May 2016. The star of the show will be The Junkyard Dog, a 1958 restored and customised Framus archtop guitar, that was discovered unloved and broken in two in a junk yard skip! Simon Raw takes up the story. The Junkyard Dog is a remarkable guitar. If Al Elias, our illustrious guitar builder, had not found her in a junk yard skip, I wouldn’t be writing this article today. The story of how the guitar found her way from the skip to the stage can be explained in two words: spiritual intervention! The story begins over a year ago. Bob Harrison, our acclaimed pickup guru and I had almost given up hope of finding a like-minded partner with whom we could share our love of guitar design. I’m local, Bob, however, lives in California but his soul is based in Masham! Together, we created the Raw Guitar Co. with the aim of designing guitar brands that tick all the commercial boxes; something we call “In Search Of The Lost Chord”. We were looking to find someone who was in tune with our way of working, creatively speaking. Someone who shared our vision and wanted to join us on our journey. That person was Al Elias. It was his late father-in-law who brought us together and that’s a story in itself and one day I shall put it down on paper. Suffice to say, Al coming on board was a gift from above. When Al joined us he invited me round to his workshop on Leyburn Road and proceeded to show me his wonderful guitars he had built over the past few years. You can see and hear a number of them being played at our #FurtherOnUpTheRoad Show at Masham Town Hall. As we were about to leave, something caught my eye. In the outer reaches of his workshop was an old guitar partially hidden by cans of paint and wood. “What’s that?” I asked. “It’s an old 1958 German Framus archtop I found in a junk yard skip” Al replied. “Does it play?” I enquired. “No, the neck joint is broken and she’s in desperate need of repair”. Despite her faded looks,

28

this beautiful fräulein still had the X-factor: that certain something that immediately makes her stand out from the crowd. Al picked up the guitar, dusted her down and took her into his studio where we had a closer look. It was not looking good. The neck joint was indeed badly damaged, the frets were worn, the tuners were seized and the bridge was missing. Nevertheless, we both agreed she was worth saving. From spiritual intervention to restoration. Someone, does indeed, work in mysterious ways! After three months of repair work she was good to go. However, she was missing that certain something that would transform her forever: a Bob Harrison pickup! There was only one we could fit, Bob’s astonishing Breuer single coil. The pickup had given The Junkyard Dog, as we have

intuitively named her, a bark all of her own! Since we finished working on her, she has become a minor celebrity. Perhaps it’s because we photographed her in Keith Anderson’s metal recycling yard on Dallamires Lane! Our test pilot, Tom Killner immediately fell in love with her when we took her down to his rehearsal studio in Rotherham to record The Junkyard Dog Sessions for our YouTube channel. Our consultant, Gary Grainger from Bishop FM Radio, is the current custodian and grabs all the attention when he takes her to gigs. The Junkyard Dog is more than a guitar. She is part of the family and a constant source of inspiration, Consequently, she has inspired us to create the #JunkyardCollection, a brand that is representative of where we stand today regarding commercial, manufacturing and marketing acumen. Roger Clegg, Head of Business Development, is buzzing with excitement at how it’s all coming together. You can see and hear The Junkyard Dog and the #JunkyardCollection, along with other guitars and basses we have designed, at our #FurtherOnUpThe Road promo show at Masham Town Hall on Saturday 7th May 2016. On stage playing them will be the amazing Tom Killner Band with special guests Bob Angell, Gary Grainger and Mitch Laddie. If you love the blues, hard hitting rock ‘n’ roll with soul and funk overtones, this gig is not to be missed. Tickets (£8.00) can be purchased from Masham Community Office (01765 680 200) or online at wegottickets.com/event/347126. Further information on the show can be found on our Facebook page or at rawguitars.net/ news_conversation.
