in the Garden
Spring’s canvas is adorned with sunshine, raindrops and rainbows. Listen carefully, and you may hear the sound of nature’s cogs beginning to whirr as your garden stirs. From here, the growing pace quickens, gently clicking through the gears towards the summer zenith. Now is a perfect time to get into your garden to get your hands dirty or to just relax, unwind and let your troubles float away.
Make the most of your time off this year and enjoy carefree days in your own isle of calm. We all thrive in a stress free environment and it’s important to take a break. Therefore,
Plants in Focus: Spring Blooms Lenten Rose – Hellebore A group of shade tolerant evergreen perennials with elegant, early spring flowers with many varieties. Fleabane – Erigeron ‘Karvinskianus’ A plant that enjoys warm, well drained conditions and looks fantastic creeping over walls.
think about what you want from your garden and how you’d like to create your own piece of paradise. You can use your garden as an extension of your living space, to watch wildlife in or simply see the blooms come and go through the seasons. At Timothy Campbell Landscapes, we create gardens with passion, care and a personal touch. If you would like a bespoke design and/or build to create your own beautiful, unique space then please contact Tim or Vicky on 07739071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes. co.uk

Wildlife Corner: Batty about Bats These are fantastic little creatures and are much more fun than they are made out to be. As a child I recall many a tale about blood sucking vampire bats, however, our UK species are only interested in devouring our insects and can eat in excess of three thousand per night! Therefore, they’re more gardener’s friend than fiendish foe.
gardener it will help to leave walls unpointed, plant insect attracting plants (especially night scented varieties), build a pond, create linear planting (hedgerows and treelines), minimize artificial outdoor lighting and leave parts of the garden to go wild. Remember, bats are a protected group of mammals so ensure that you don’t handle them whilst trying to help.
There are many things you can do to support our local populations. Bats require places to sleep, safe roosting sites, water and foraging habitats, among other things. As a

Springtime at Jennyruth Workshops All aboard
We are always delighted to welcome friends old and new to the workshops at Bridge Hewick, and the same can be said of the commissions we have done over the years and continue to undertake. We were pleased to welcome back ‘Ivor’ and ‘The Wren’, two engine housings we made several years ago that were in need of a bit of tlc. Many of our workers were involved
in the refurbishments which included repainting and upgrading some of the fittings. We have some real train enthusiasts here so they were especially pleased to undertake the work. We hope the engines will continue to provide many more years of service on their narrow-gauge railways.
Caring for the environment
Some of our workers are working towards their Entry level 3 Certificate in Personal and Social Development through the NYCC Adult Learning and Skills Service and have been looking at environmental matters. We have all been doing our bit to cut down on our use of plastic, including collecting crisp packets to recycle through the collection point at the Sun Parlour café. We are very aware of looking after wildlife too and continue to enjoy making a range of wildlife
habitat boxes. We must say a special thank you to Sharon’s Barbers on North Street for selling so many of our individually crafted birdboxes and bee homes. We have also recently produced a number of habitat boxes for a wildlife area at Fellbeck.
Seasonal colour
As well as taking commissions and having a range of core products we are constantly looking at new ideas. This Spring has been no exception with the introduction of some colourful bird and flower decorations to brighten up planters. We also continue to work with many local groups and have been pleased to join with our friends at Brighter Boroughbridge to work alongside local artist Josie Nicholson to produce new display boards. Look out for these on the roundabout on the approach to Boroughbridge.
Awards
We are delighted to have won another prestigious Duke of York Community Initiative Award. This Royal Award is presented to community projects based in Yorkshire in recognition of the work they do. We would also like to thank Ripon’s Got Talent for selecting us as their charity of the year, they say they ‘Couldn’t be happier to be supporting such an amazing charity’. A big thank you goes to all our customers, supporters and volunteers. If you haven’t been to visit us before, please do come and see us – and look out for us at various community events throughout the year. We love talking to people about what we do so please get in touch if you are looking for a speaker or presentation for a local group – and don’t forget to follow us on social media. Enjoy the Summer.

Spring Update The staff and Trustees of the Development Campaign were extremely sad to say goodbye to our wonderful chairman the late Dr Colin Harrison, CBE, who led the campaign since 2009. He was instrumental in raising significant funds for the music and fabric of Ripon Cathedral and more recently he has been involved in the vision for providing enhanced facilities to take Ripon Cathedral forward into the 21st Century. His funeral took place in the cathedral on Monday 28 January 2019. In Colin’s own words “On we go”…….. The Development Campaign Team now carries on fundraising and the good work that Colin started. At the October meeting, the Trustees agreed that we should produce an enews in place of the printed Spring newsletter to save both funds and resources and we hope that as donors to the campaign you will agree and enjoy this publication. The printed newsletter will be posted out in August together with the Christmas card leaflet. We are pleased to report that in 2018 the Campaign raised £185,843. This was a good result and represents a sound performance with particularly gratifying were the contributions from events, memberships and charitable trusts. We are looking forward to a busy year in the campaign office. You will find a full programme of fundraising events in this issue, together with ways you can get involved and help to support Ripon Cathedral for future generations to enjoy. Please get in touch with Margaret, Molly, or Carolyn for further information. Contact the Cathedral Office on 01765 603462 Chapter House: 01765 602072 www.riponcathedral.info

Dash Cams The dashboard camera, or dash cam, has become increasingly popular recently. So, should you think about buying one? But why might you want one? First-hand evidence in case of a car accident - This is the main reason why people invest in one. If you are involved in a collision you can prove that it was not your fault by submitting the camera footage as evidence. It’s a compelling reason for buying one. Reporting a dangerous driver Sometimes you see a driver do something so reckless and irresponsible right in front of you that you fear for the safety of other road-users. Reporting that person becomes much easier with evidence. In the US there are special channels for reporting dangerous drivers, with the aim of making roads safer for everyone. It is probable that the UK will follow suit.
Extra insurance for parents - We worry when our teens first start to borrow the car that they may not stick to the rules of the road. Knowing that there is a dash cam monitoring their driving behaviour is an extra incentive for them to pay attention, or they might not be trusted to take the car out again! Prevention of insurance claim scams - Insurance fraud is a growing problem with vehicles. Some drivers purposely cause minor car accidents in order to put the blame on the other party, so they can extort money from the victim. The victim has no way of proving their innocence, so these people also fake injuries in order to collect the insurance money from their insurance companies. A dash cam will at least allow you to prove that you were not at fault in such a case.
find it’s been scratched? Or are you sure the neighbour’s children are scraping their bikes along the side of your vehicle when they squeeze past on the drive? A well-installed dash camera can efficiently record such events because most can be set to record even when the car engine isn’t running. Some can even send all the data to your laptop or smart phone remotely, giving you peace of mind. Because the best camera is the one you have with you - It’s not all about the car! Check out online videos of
dash cams capturing unexpected phenomena. A family of ducks stopping traffic in Birmingham, a plane crashing right in front of a guy driving down a highway, and one Russian car driver’s dash camera recorded an enormous meteor that flew over Russia. The clip ended up being viewed millions of times on YouTube! Dash cams are set to become as necessary an addition to our driving life as sat-navs. If you don’t already have one, perhaps you should think about it.
It keeps an eye on your car while you are not in it! - Have you ever returned to your car in a car park to

Hardy Annuals! Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal creditcrunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-themist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded.
flower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening!
