Ripon to get improved city bus service Ripon’s city bus services are set to improve from April. Local operator Shaun McGowan of Shaun’s Minibuses & Coach Hire, is planning to introduce a new commercial bus service. This will serve Clotherholme Road, Lark Lane, Lead Lane, and Dallamires Road. The existing service, operated by Dales & District Travel, will be withdrawn following changes to the award of contracts by North Yorkshire County Council. Mr McGowan said: “As a new venture we will be operating some contracted local bus services for the council and at the same time have taken the opportunity to provide an improved service for local

people in Ripon. The city service will operate without financial support from the County Council so it’s important that local people use it to make sure it is viable.” Timetables for the new service are now available locally. “North Yorkshire County Council has been encouraging local operators to come forward and do more where possible to take on and continue commercial services in the county,” said Ciounty Councillor Chris Metcalfe, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Integrated Passenger Transport. This new and improved service for Ripon is not subsidised and so we hope local people will support it to ensure its future.”

We ask Mauro from Cathedral Financial Planning:
Equity Release – Unlocking the value in your Home... So, what is Equity Release? The ‘equity’ in your home is the value left after allowing for debts such as any mortgage or loans that have been secured on it. Equity Release allows you to convert some of the equity in your home to cash without having to move home, allowing cash to be released as a lump sum or part of it for a regular income, without any need to make monthly repayments. Why would I need to release equity? It can help you raise funds for whatever purpose you choose – from repaying the outstanding mortgage or other debts to funding private healthcare, providing the deposit for your grandchild’s first home or to pay their school fees. You may use it to carry out home improvements, take that lifetime holiday or just simply make things more financially comfortable at home. What should I think about? When considering equity release you should always speak to a specialist financial adviser who will search all the plans available to find the one most suited to your specific needs. These plans should only be from providers that are members of SHIP (Safe Home Income Plan) which offer a no negative equity guarantee. It is also useful to use an expert solicitor. Money released from your home is taxfree, but this may impact your ability to claim State benefits. Should you invest any of the cash there may be tax to pay on any income or growth received.
Am I eligible for equity release? The youngest applicant (if you apply in joint names) must be 55 or over and own your own home which must have a minimum value of £50,000.You must be able to raise enough money to repay existing secured loans or mortgages. What plans are available? There are two basic types of scheme; Lifetime Mortgages and Home Reversion Plans. With Lifetime Mortgages, homeowners take out a loan secured
on their home to raise a lump sum or to receive regular income. The interest on the loan taken is left to accumulate as no repayments are made. The loan is repaid from the sale of the house on the death of the plan holder or the surviving spouse. If the value of the original loan, plus the interest rolled up, is higher than the money raised from the sale of the property, the equity release company has to ‘cover the loss’ – plan holders’ heirs or estates cannot be asked to make up the difference. An increasingly popular form of Lifetime Mortgage is known as the Drawdown Lifetime Mortgage. Instead of taking a lump sum, you decide at the outset on the maximum amount of equity you want to release and take the cash in stages as and when you need it. This helps keep the interest rolling up to a minimum. With Home Reversion Plans, homeowners agree to sell a share of their home in return for a lump sum. When the homeowner or surviving spouse dies, the company receives the agreed proportion of the sale of the proceeds. So, if a homeowner gives up 40% of the house value in return for a lump sum, the company will receive 40% of the sale value of the house on death of the last partner, whether that value is higher or lower than when the deal was done. The older you are when you start the scheme, the higher the cash released.
Is it right for me? The right Equity Release plan can make a difference to your lifestyle for the better. Working out which type of plan best suits your circumstances can be difficult, and that is why many people consult specialist advisers. Please feel free to take advantage of our friendly professional service and a free no obligation initial consultation Equity Release comprises lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans. To understand the full benefits, features and risks always ask for a personal illustration.

Nature
in the Garden
It’s all about the plants Springtime is blooming and our gardens are flushing into life. Longer days are full of heartwarming sunshine and life giving April showers. The tender shoots of spring are here and all around there is growth, energy and renewal. So why not take a few moments to soak in the joyful verdancy and become spring inspired. A key element of any garden is the plant life you choose to support within it. This will soften the hardest of landscaped areas, support the natural, wild inhabitants and possibly even supply food for both your table and your soul. There’s a mesmerizing selection of attractive, aromatic and attention getting flora to choose from. So what are you waiting for? Plants can be both beautiful and useful. Some, such as Angel’s Fishing Rod, are used for their understated
elegance; others, such as Sweet Peas, add sensual fragrance and cut flower potential; and many more, such as Sugar Snaps, are great for a quick, healthy snack. Some careful thought and planning can create areas of planting to enjoy and use amongst a functional and beautiful garden plot.
If you want to create your own floral haven full of nature’s finest or require any help with garden design and construction then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes (BSc (Hons) Environmental Conservation) on 07739071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk
Plants
Special Plants in Focus: For All Occasions Angel’s Fishing Rod – Dierama A graceful perennial with stunning, arching stems and bell-shaped flowers that does well in the sun.
Sweet Peas – Lathyrus odoratus An often scented annual that feeds our bees and butterflies and is great as a cut flower.
Sugar Snap Peas Another annual pea that, unlike Sweet Peas, is edible, sweet and delicious.
Happy Gardening!
Wildlife Corner A Friend in Need
A variety of planting styles within your garden will create hotspots for wildlife. Their requirements are as varied as the plants available to you but don’t get bogged down in the detail, what doesn’t help one species will help another. You could start by working out what you want to attract and support. Then you can research what their individual planting requirements for food and shelter are. You can then implement this with a planting plan. Here’s an example: • I want bees and butterflies • They require year round nectar sources • They require untidy areas for cover • Select early (e.g. Sweet Violet), mid (e.g. Sea Holly) and late (e.g. Golden Rod) flowering nectar rich plant varieties • Select a sunny spot and create an informal flower bed/meadow • Scatter wildflower seed among additional existing beds too to add surrounding nectar spots • Leave an area untidy for them to feed, breed and rest. Therefore, think about the wildlife you love and get planting. For more wildlife ideas check out our previous editorials in the news section at www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk

3D-LIPO, the revolutionary Body Contouring Treatment, Now Available at Saks Ripon! Saks in Ripon is delighted to announce that 3D-lipo – the revolutionary new treatment that successfully targets fat and cellulite – is now available. 3D-lipo is an amazing alternative to liposuction offering a powerful new dimension in nonsurgical fat removal, cellulite treatment and skin tightening for the face and body. It’s the holy grail of body contouring – pain free with fast result and no down time – a HUGE hit with A-listers, models and actresses, who simply don’t have time for recovery from surgery. 3D-lipo targets areas that are difficult to improve with diet and exercise. It’s great for cellulite on the thighs and buttocks and perfect for post-baby tums. It’s a safe, pain free and non-invasive procedure and we’re seeing fabulous results with those tricky bums, tums and thighs!
THE TREATMENT EXPLAINED Unlike other lipo offerings 3d-lipo uses Cavitation + Cryolipolysis which physically destroy fat cells. The advantage of this is that customers are not required to exercise post treatment in order to metabolize the released fat which is a significant advantage over existing methods.
Cavitation is a natural phenomenon based on low frequency ultrasound. The ultrasound produces a strong wave of pressure to fat cell membranes. A fat cell membrane cannot withstand this pressure and therefore disintegrates into a liquid state which is then disposed of via the body’s natural metabolic processes. WhilstnewCryolipolysistechnology(otherwise known as fat freezing) is a unique combination of electro and cryo therapy which means that 20-40% of the fat cells in the treated area die in a natural way and dissolve over the course of several months. Added to this is the combination of radio frequency and vacuum rollering which are highly effective for skin tightening, improving overall skin tone and cellulite reduction. We try out dozens of what are labelled ‘revolutionary’ or ‘miracle’ treatments at Saks and only the very best ones are offered in our salons. This 3D-lipo treatment really has amazed everyone at Saks HQ and we are thrilled to offer it in our salons.”
SO, HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Initial consultations and body assessment are currently available FREE OF CHARGE. Or with a taster treatment for just £20 Treatments are available £100 per session or £550 for a course of eight treatments. Eight, hour-long sessions, one week apart, are recommended. Results may be seen immediately. For more details or to book an appointment, visit us at 23 High Skellgate Ripon HG4 1BD or call the salon on 01765 690125

Support available for younger people living with dementia
Jennyruth Workshops forges links with social enterprise in Macedonia Jennyruth Workshops have been working with an EU organisation, Euclid, to support a social enterprise Pokara-Nasa based in Kumanovo, Macedonia’s second city. Pokara-Nasa, an organisation that supports 25 adults with both physical and learning disabilities, wishes to develop skills for their clients and to manufacture products to create a more sustainable enterprise. A representative from Jennyruth Workshops, Chief Executive Richard Plummer, visited Macedonia in the autumn to assist them in developing a business plan to expand the training they give. Following this work, Euclid sponsored two members of the Poraka- Nasa staff to visit JRW. The visit was very successful with Svetlana & Dejan spending 3 days in the workshops absorbing many skills and learning how to develop the skills of their clients. They were very interested to see how much our Workers, who have a learning disability, took part in the running of the business as well as meeting customers, manufacturing the products and sales. They also enjoyed Ripon and found the local people very helpful and the City extremely interesting. They particularly enjoyed seeing the watch set.
Younger people affected by dementia, their families and carers are benefitting from a support group which meets at Harrogate’s Starbeck Library. The support group is run by Dementia Forward and the Tees, Esk and Wear Valley Mental Health Trust. Dementia Forward is a specialist voluntary organisation and is one of North Yorkshire County Council’s dementia support service providers. “We know that the support service we provide has to be tailored to meet the needs of every individual, and in particular that there is a lack of help available for younger people affected by dementia” said County Councillor Clare Wood, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health Integration. “This support group focusses on encouraging people with dementia to realise what they can do - not what they can’t do - and in addition to offering companionship and peer support it can facilitate group sessions and activities. It also provides a vital weekly respite time for carers”.
The cooperation between the two organisations will continue and Jennyruth Workshops has received its first export order to produce wooden City Shields for Kumanovo which celebrates its 500 year anniversary this year. Jennyruth Workshops have enjoyed an interesting start to 2015 with more workers joining the workshop and the improvements to the building continuing. The latest area to be upgraded is the paint room, with a drying room being added and improved furniture and fittings. If you would like more information on Jennyruth Workshops or would like to purchase some of their beautifully handcrafted gifts then please go to their website www. jennyruth.co.uk.
The group meets on Wednesdays and as well as help and support offers weekly indoor and outdoor activities. These include country walks, visits to places of interest and sports sessions. Transport to and from the sessions and activities is provided by the Red Cross and anyone interested in joining the group can contact the Dementia Forward helpline 01765 601224 for more information. Group members can also take advantage of the library’s new collection of books for people with dementia and their carers. The collection includes a wide range of titles from those which help people who have just been diagnosed with the condition through to picture books for reminiscence sessions and stories from those with first-hand experience of living with dementia.
Jennyruth Workshops invites people to visit them at the workshops on their Open Day, Tuesday 12th May from 10am to 1pm.

Spring Cleaning!
The term ‘Spring Cleaning’ originated in colder climes from the practice of taking the opportunity, as soon as the warmer weather arrived, to clear out the dust and soot that had accumulated throughout the home from coal and logs fires during the Winter. Modern appliances and central heating have made this unnecessary for many, but the concept of having a top-to-bottom clean at the start of Spring remains popular. Generally, people use this as a chance to deep-clean areas which they don’t pay attention to during their weekly household chores. Tasks can include: Emptying kitchen cupboards and cleaning inside. This is a good opportunity to check use-before dates on items and throw out those past their expiry date. Defrosting freezers, de-scaling kettles and irons, and cleaning ovens to aid efficient working. Vacuuming mattresses to get rid of dust mites, and turning mattresses to assist even wear. Removing cushions from sofas and vacuuming the crevices- you never know, you may find some money or jewellery that you thought you’d lost. Many people actually find the process of cleaning and de-cluttering cathartic. If you don’t fancy tackling it all yourself, then you can always get help from a professional cleaning company, many of whom offer special Spring Cleaning services. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Racing Day Cocktail Cocktail Recipe: Pimm’s Cup
Ingredients
Pimm’s No. 1: The Pimm’s Cup, so beloved across the UK, is one of summer’s finest beverages. Refreshing, colorful, delicious, and lightly alcoholic, the Pimm’s Cup is easy to make and even easier to drink.
• 2 oz. Pimm’s No. 1 • 4-6 oz. Lemon-Lime Soda or Ginger Ale • Cucumber, for garnish
The Pimm’s Cup — the most popular drink served at Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show — is built around Pimm’s No. 1. A sweet-spicy-herbal combination of gin and various (secret) flavors, Pimm’s No. 1 was created in the mid-19th century by English barman James Pimm. The cocktail is a simple highball, made up of Pimm’s No. 1, a mixer, and a fruit garnish. The mixer is typically lemonade, but can also be ginger beer, or even Champagne, which makes it a Pimm’s Royale. The garnish is almost always a cucumber (this has replaced the original borage), and this is sometimes accompanied by a mint sprig, lemon slices, and a variety of other fruits.
Instructions
Pour Pimm’s and mixer into a tall, icefilled glass, and stir. Garnish as you wish. Possible garnishes include: mint sprig, lemon slices, strawberries, apple slices, orange slices, or whatever strikes your fancy.

Garden View April is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.
Strawberry Pots You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.
Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with

a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.
Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy. By Rachel Leverton

County Council signals start of Bedale bypass construction North Yorkshire County Council’s leader, Cllr John Weighell, has signalled the start of construction work on the Bedale bypass in an official sod-cutting ceremony. The first element of the works will be the construction of the roundabouts at each end of the scheme. It is expected the road will open to traffic in autumn 2016. The construction contract for the project was awarded to Wills Bros Ltd in August 2014. Since that time the contractor has been completing the detailed design, discharging planning consents and carrying out preparatory works to facilitate the construction phase, including carrying out archaeological investigation of a Roman Villa which is affected by the route. Funding approval for the scheme was granted by the Department for Transport in July 2014. The DfT will contribute up to £29.2m, with the County Council funding the remaining £5.4m. The Bedale bypass will be approximately three miles long, from Northallerton Road, on the eastern outskirts of Leeming Bar, to a new junction on the A684 near Bedale Golf Club. It crosses the A1(M) approximately at its midpoint, where it will connect with the recently completed junction as part of the Highways Agency’s A1 Dishforth to Barton upgrade.
Traffic flow on the existing road is approximately 1 4 , 0 0 0 vehicles a day, which causes considerable congestion in the market town of Bedale and in Leeming Bar and Aiskew. The county council estimates that the bypass will cut traffic flow through the urban area by half. In addition, it will reduce environmental and road safety problems, improve access to the A1(M) for local communities, and improve access to Leeming Bar industrial estate.
Picture shows: Shovels at the ready: County Council leader John Weighell and Christine Mollard, mayor of Bedale, dig in for the start of construction works on the Bedale bypass.
“The Bedale bypass has been long-awaited and will greatly reduce congestion in Bedale, as well as Leeming Bar and Aiskew, “ said Cllr Weighell, who is also local member for Bedale. “ We are very pleased to mark the start of the works this week. Work will begin with construction of the roundabouts at each end of the scheme and obviously this will cause some disruption, but our contractors will make sure that this is kept to a minimum.”
