Never too Early Book an eye examination for your child

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A child’s development and learning can be hindered by undiagnosed or uncorrected sight defects, so early and regular eye examinations are essential to give them the best chance of succeeding in their education. Rapid visual development takes place between birth and 3-4 years of age. Many visual defects such as long-sight (hyperopia), short-sight (myopia), a turning eye (strabismus) or a rugby ball-shaped eye (astigmatism) can be inherited. Most visual problems are treated better if they are diagnosed early on. It’s not necessary to wait until a child can read the letters on a conventional chart before taking them for an eye examination. Special picture charts and tests can be used and it’s quite possible to take certain measurements without any interaction from the child at all. Doctors, health visitors and some school nurses will carry out rudimentary vision checks, but only an optometrist will be able to provide a comprehensive accurate assessment. Here are some signs to look out for but it’s important to say that some children show no signs of anything being wrong at all, yet they may still have a serious underlying vision defect. • Frequent eye rubbing • Dark circles under the eyes • Obvious discomfort in bright sunshine

• watery eyes • One eye larger than the other • One or both eyes turning inwards or outwards, even if it’s only sometimes • A white pupil visible in family photos, particularly where flash has been used • Holding books very close • Aversion to reading • Sitting right next to the TV • Red-rimmed eyes, or sorelooking eyelids • Excessive blinking • Short attention span for closeup tasks • Poor eye-hand co-ordination It might sound obvious but choose an optometrist who likes children (not all of them do!) and who puts them at ease. When you go into the practice there should be children’s books or possibly a toy or two available to keep them occupied while they wait. A child-friendly optometrist will understand if your toddler

wants to run around the room periodically or alternatively doesn’t want to engage at all. If your child has special needs such as autism or anxiety and needs to visit the practice to see the room and meet the staff before attending for an appointment this should be an option. Choose someone you feel comfortable with and your child will probably feel comfortable too. Your child’s sight is precious. Book an eye examination today. By Louise Addison

Life insurance – it doesn’t have to be complicated It’s one of those items on the ‘to do’ list that is often avoided. People worry that choosing the right product is complicated and overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. For a start, do you need it? The short answer is: yes, you do if you have anyone who is dependent on you financially such as children, a partner or spouse who depends on your income, or a mortgage on the family home. Life insurance is a prudent way to help protect your family financially, should the worst happen. So what type of life insurance plans are available? Life Assurance is designed to pay out a lump sum on the death of the person covered within the policy term. This can be on a decreasing level which is designed to help protect a repayment mortgage (where the amount covered reduces roughly in line with a repayment mortgage) or on a level term, where the sum covered remains the same throughout the policy term, unless you make any changes to your policy. This is not a savings or investment product and has no cash value unless a valid claim is made. Critical Illness Cover is intended to pay out on a diagnosis of specified illnesses or permanent total disability, regardless of whether the illness prevents you from working.

Usually added to a life assurance policy as extra cover but can be taken out as a stand-alone plan. The cash sum could help ease the emotional and financial stress or it could be used to help with medical treatment, meeting lifestyle costs or even a holiday to help you recover. Income protection can provide a regular replacement income if you are unable to work due to illness or injury, but after an initial deferred period. The longer the deferred period, the cheaper the premiums. Benefit payments are calculated as a percentage of your salary as an incentive to return to work. The policy once started cannot be cancelled by the insurer but can be cancelled by you irrespective of the number and length of claims made. Family Income Benefit provides either a regular tax-free income for your family until the plan ends or is converted to a lump sum payment should you die within the defined term. Hopefully, this guide has helped you understand the importance of protecting your life should the worst happen. Summer has arrived... Blue skies, bees and butterflies and long, balmy nights. Summer brings us a heady cocktail burgeoning with sensual delight as the garden is at it’s zenith. It’s time to take a deep breath, sit down, relax and enjoy nature in full swing.

give you an opportunity to marvel at the splendour you’ve created with a chance to plan for the future. A beautiful, balanced space acts as a refuge from the hustle and bustle of modern life for both you and your wildlife friends. When planning a new area, form should follow function. In essence, get the basics in place and then put your imagination to work. It’s like painting but instead of a brush you use a fork and spade. There’s a limitless supply of creative materials with which to make your masterpiece. Some of my favourites are natural stone, water, light and of course plants in their various shapes and sizes. So why not get inspired and give it a go? This summer we thought we’d give you a snapshot of the gardens we’ve created over the last year, with our customers.

Jennyruth Workshops:

Summer at Jennyruth Workshops Jennyruth Workshops has a tradition of reaching out to the wider community encouraging our workers to engage with a diverse variety of groups through talks, visits and attending events throughout the year. In addition to our regular products we have developed skills in producing bespoke products for individuals, local community groups, schools and churches. This involves our workers in discussing what the customer needs, looking at designs, thinking of the best way to construct the products and preparing and collecting together materials needed. In recent months we have made to order notice boards for local churches and a Hospice. I enjoyed making these boards and taking them to Martin House.” Daniel. A variety of toy boxes have been made and decorated appropriately.

We have developed resources for local libraries and a new A board advertising a Ripon food outlet. We especially enjoyed supporting the Walled Garden on their recent Open Day by having a stall selling some of our products to the visitors. Our new porch was interesting to make and install and almost immediately was chosen as a nesting site by a thrush who did not seem bothered about people coming in and out of the Workshops. If all this sounds interesting to you either as a Volunteer or as a Worker, get in touch and arrange a visit so that you too might be part of the amazing Jennyruth Workshops and inspiring Jennyruth Unit 5, Red House Farm, Newby Hall Estate, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 5AY Tel: 01765 606620 email: info@jennyruth.co.uk www.jennyruth.co.uk Workshops.

How did the days of the week obtain their names? If we go back in time to the Babylonians (circa 4,500BC – 500BC), we find a great intellectual civilisation that developed a calendar and introduced the 7 day week. At that time only 5 planets were known to exist namely, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn so if we add to them the Sun and the Moon we have our complement of 7 days. The Romans continued with this custom designating Sunday and Monday as the first two days of the week. A number of modern day societies continue with this process for example the days of the week in our Mediterranean countries still follow the names of the planets with the exception of Sunday. To give comparisons of this the French days of the week are mentioned in the following explanations:

SUNDAY

Some may argue that Sunday is the first day of the week but it is our starting point, it is also one of the easiest to understand. Sunday is named after the largest object in our Solar System i.e. the Sun, and was originally known as Sunnandaeg in Old English which can be translated as “Sun’s day”. In French Sunday is Dimanche meaning the day of grace.

monDAY

Monday is named after what appeared to be; to our ancestors; the second largest object that can be observed in the sky. In Old English it was known as Monandaeg which can be translated as “day of the Moon”. In French it is Lundi (Lune being the word for Moon).

TUESDAY

Originally Tuesday was named after Mars in modern French it is called Mardi so it is easy to see the connection. However; we were invaded by the Vikings and they had a God of War called Tyr. The Old English referred to it as “Tiw’s day” thus we arrive with our Tuesday.

wednesDAY

France still continues with its original derivation of “Mercredi” named after the planet Mercury. Once more the Vikings had their way and transformed it into another of their gods “The God of Woden”, and so it became “Wodnesdaeg” which through the ages has become known as Wednesday.

thursDAY

Thursday was originally named after the planet Jupiter, in French Thursday is called Jeudi. Once more our invasive ancestors changed the name to honour their God Thor hence we are handed down the name Thursday.

friDAY

The French somehow escaped the Viking intrusion and they continue with their days being named from the planets, so Friday in French is Vendredi named after the planet Venus. Whereas our Friday was named after Frija, Freya or Frigg all being derived from Goddess’s of our Viking ancestors.

SaturDAY

Somehow the Vikings did not change the name of Saturday which the French call Samedi, and Saturday remains named after that most beautiful of the planets; Saturn.

GARDEN VIEW

Feeling Fruity Have you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry the space is too small, or it won’t look pretty, or it’s too difficult? What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears to plums, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even figs or nectarines? The first thing you need to know is that the sweeter the fruit is meant to be the more sun it will require. Sun boosts sugar levels. If you have a sunny wall it’s an ideal place to train a sun-loving fruit tree like a peach or an apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertiliser and good quality compost. As it grows splay the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old straggly branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or ‘fanning’ is that as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximise your crop. It also has the benefit of being a great space saver. Choose a variety that won’t grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can grow gooseberries or raspberries, or my favourite morello cherries. Most of these come in compact varieties and can also be fan-trained against a wall if space is an issue. I have a tiny orchard of minarettes - space-saving apple, pear and plum trees bought as single vertical stems which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 6 feet / 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My

16

infocus

children love them! Simply cut back the side stems to about 10cm at this time of year and you’re good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally on you for their food and water. Thick glazed / non-porous pots are best because they retain water and act as insulation in extreme cold. Use the correct compost and food for the plant but most will do well with a regular high potash liquid feed from early spring to late summer. As a gardener I was quite late to fruit-growing, but I realised quickly that it becomes an addictive hobby. And as a complete bonus I’ve noticed a definite increase in my bee population over the past few years. Free food, and good for the environment too. What could be better? By Rachael Leverton

The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) For 50 years, serious efforts have been made by using up to date technology in attempts to communicate with any alien life that may exist in outer space.

So far no contact has been made but the search goes on. The SETI Institute is now in the process of building 350 radio telescopes in California to locate that first communication with outer space. The research does not stop there, it is being carried out throughout the world by many highly respected radio telescope observatories. The ethics of SETI have created deep intellectual discussions amongst theologians, astronomers, politicians, philosophers to name but a few of the professions. This does not mean of course that we the ordinary people of the world should not have a view; on what is to some; a controversial subject. So who are the people who run SETI?

Venus – Can be observed during July in the north western sky after sunset. However; August will be the best time to observe Venus. Look for this brightest of Planets high in the western sky immediately after sunset. Mars – Rises in the east between 9.15 and 11.15 pm during July and can be seen in the south east during August. Jupiter – Is most prominent in the southern skies during July and towards the south west in August to the left of a very bright Venus. Saturn – Is difficult to locate, look to the left of Jupiter, but you need to be up between 01.00 and 04.00 in the early hours during July. By August it will be setting by 01.30 hours
