Real Retirement Planning I’ve been reading the Which? ‘planning for your retirement’ booklet, and it’s a pretty comprehensive summary of things you need to think about. But it struck me there’s one enormous hole in the 34 pages……. There is not one word about what retirement means, so what is it you are actually planning for? It’s obviously a good idea to make sure the financial position looks healthy, so you will have enough money to live securely and enjoy the extra free time. Cashflow forecasting will help you to check that the assets you’ve worked so hard to build up throughout your working life will be sufficient to maintain your desired lifestyle over the next 20/30/40 years. A good retirement, however, depends on two things: - having enough purpose to get you up in the morning - having enough money so you can sleep at night Effective and ongoing financial planning will help you with the second, but it won’t get you very far with the first. The financial part of this conversation should make you feel free enough to create a new retirement based on the emotional part. Plan your days around the people and passions that excite you. How about: • Work at something you love. Take a part-time job at a company that interests you. Turn that crazy idea you couldn’t sell to your old boss into your own business. Consult, teach, volunteer. • Keep learning. Curiosity is a great stimulant for mental health and well-being. • Get better at having fun. Join local groups. Spend more time with younger members of your family. • Travel. To familiar places or unexplored destinations. We spend so much of our lives working that our jobs become a large part of our identities. Rediscovering who we are once we stop working can be a major retirement challenge. To prepare for this emotional transition: • Talk to your spouse ahead of time. Don’t wait until you’ve stopped working before discussing how both of you feel about retirement. What do each of you imagine life will be like? What are the things you’re excited to do? What are you afraid of? What can each of you do to make this new phase of life as fulfilling as possible? • Make a list. What are the things you’re passionate about? Something you’ve always wished you knew more about? A skill you’d like to develop? A cause that’s important to you? • What about after you’ve gone? Putting together a legacy that could impact your family and community for generations can have tremendous emotional benefits. The peace of mind that comes from knowing the people you care about are taken care of can empower you to worry a little less and enjoy your retirement more. Just imagine…After all those years you finally stopped work yesterday. What does being retired feel like to you? What are you going to do today? What are you going to talk about with your partner? What about tomorrow and the next day? You could leave it until that day arrives, or you could start planning ahead now. n The Pilgrimage of Grace 7pm. Markenfield Hall, Ripon HG4 3AD Entry Fee: £12 On 11 October 1536 a group of men gathered in Ripon marketplace, determined to restore the dissolved abbeys of Jervaulx and Coverham. Calling themselves ‘pilgrims’ in defiance of Henry VIII’s religious changes, and flying the banner of the five wounds of Christ, these rebels coerced their local lords to lead them. Thomas Markenfield of Markenfield Hall and his brother-inlaw Richard Norton of Norton Conyers led thousands of rebels to besiege Skipton Castle and then south to Doncaster. This ‘Pilgrimage of Grace’ was one of the largest rebellions of the Tudor period, with between 20-40,000 gentry and yeomen mustering against the crown. Discover how and why these armies were raised, why the rebellion failed to achieve its aims, and the dire consequences of rebellion against the early Tudor state. www.markenfield.com .........................................................

Don’t forget to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at your nearest library during the holidays! This year the theme is Space Chase, celebrating 50 years since the first Apollo moon landing. The challenge is to read 6 library books of your choice and collect space themed stickers and other prizes on the way – everyone who finishes will receive a limited edition Space Chase medal and a certificate. Space Chase is for children aged 4 to 11 but this year there is also a special mini challenge with free stickers for younger siblings too! Summer at Jennyruth Workshops Bespoke Work Staff and workers have completed three wonderful Garden Arbours for customers as special orders. The workmanship is very impressive and we have some very happy customers. We are able to take a limited number of bespoke orders depending on the need to produce our usual range of craft items. If you think there is something we could design and build for you, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
Coffee at the Unicorn Hotel Have a coffee at the Unicorn Hotel, Ripon. In our Friday WEA course we have been planning a project to make good links with the City of Ripon and raise a few funds. We have organised a coffee morning at the Unicorn Hotel on the second Friday morning of each month. Daniel, one of our workers, says that “drinking coffee and eating cakes is not why we are doing this.” Come along and judge for yourself and meet some of our workers.

Volunteering at Ripon Cathedral
We have been involved in a wonderful project for Brighter Boroughbridge with Josie, a local artist, who designed a series of paintings of local landmarks. She enabled our workers to paint them for installation on the southern roundabout in Boroughbridge.
Matthew is supported by one of our volunteers to volunteer at Ripon Cathedral as a ‘Welcomer’. Matthew says “I wear the red gown and my new name badge, welcoming and greeting new guests and give them the guide map to help show them around. They learn about the whole history of it.”

A small farm with a T h e Spilman f a m i l y are a small mixed farming business, with a big (huge!) diversification challenge on our hands! They have a history of forward thinking and diversification, within their farm heritage, 47 years ago they planted their first strawberries to diversify into PYO. There were few farm shops then, and the concept of pyo and farm shop retail has evolved to be a popular pastime in the last ten years. Last year, Spilmans decided to revisit their farm shop concept (which was a seasonal pop up shop) and expand their customer offer to include a fully stocked farm shop, cafe and play barn business. Spilmans aim is to extend visitors stay whilst on their farm, by offering a great value day out for all the family. Their purpose, is to give people a truly authentic experience. First and

foremost, they do not proclaim to be anything other than yorkshire farmers... and everything must be centered around their fabulous setting. They hope to continue to develop and grow their business to become a destination of choice for families, cyclists and the immediate local community. This is a big challenge to their business, as the history of the farm shop, is that of a seasonal business that previously has only been open June - August for the last 47 years! This requires a whole mindset change from the local community, to remember that Spilmans farm shop and cafe is now open for 9 months of the year and are a local convenience store to them for organic milk, cream & butter, fresh eggs, farm reared meat, preserves, confectionery etc. “We are an excellent example, of a farm that approaches diversification in a proactive way, and not reactive. Our farming future, depends on the diversification of past farming ways...

We choose to do this by providing an authentic farm shopping environment, a cafe menu that showcases fresh seasonal produce, and a play space that provides a farming themed recreational facility for families, that educates young people about agriculture.� Olivia Spilman. This farming team are passionate about all things farming, the future of farming and how we can influence the younger generation to learn about and enjoy a farming setting. This year they opened their Spilman County Showground Playbarn, which enables families to visit the farm for free and spend time in a rural farming setting. Playing and interacting with each other, role playing how to be a farmer, looking after and even showing animals! They recently volunteered for the FaceTime a Farmer initiative, to help schools across the country engage with farming from the classroom. This year is the first year they will partake in
Open Farm Sunday, when the farm will be open to the public to visit and see behind the scenes on June 21st 2019. Alongside future generations, Spilmans have made a commitment to the planet this year too... to reduce the use of single use plastic this year across the whole of the farm. Their PYO punnets are now plastic free, and made from recycled cardboard. They no longer have any plastic carrier bags, but have our own branded bags for life if customers forget a bag. Their farm shop sells organic milk in glass bottles, hand wrapped organic butter, eco products for the home and much more! They also sell the first tin of peanut butter to hit the market!
