Going Potty Over Valley Gardens Toilets Harrogate’s award winning Valley Gardens have another trophy to add to the list. The toilets in the new games pavilion and cafe have just taken the Eco Friendly category in the National Loo Awards. This is the second time Harrogate Borough Council has won this award. The Valley Gardens toilets are fitted with sun tubes and on the rare occasion that there is a need for electricity, it is provided by two LED down lighters which save up to 85 per cent when in use compared to conventional lighting. The combined hand washing units, including wash and drying, save about 94 per cent energy in total compared to a conventional hand washing facilities. All ventilation is powered by solar photovoltaic panels and rainwater is harvested so that mains water is not required. Councillor Phil Ireland, the council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment says that the building was built using lightweight insulate blocks that were sourced locally to minimize environmental impact and they are made from recycled material. He added: “Everything about these toilets is about reducing the impact on the environment and on the public purse. They are very worthy of this award. I would like to thank the council’s property team who have delivered this award winning project. They tell me that they are
Wildmansticks/Bushcraft/Mountaineering Stuart Lawrence foundered this fantastic enterprise in November, 2012, and started trading in April, 2013. For the previous ten years he had specialised in making sticks, having honed his trade in horn bending and carving, with a well known stick maker in Helmsley. Using his acquired skills, Stuart now offers a selection of workshops including stick making classes and basic bush craft courses.
BASIC BUSHCRAFT/SELF RELIANCE (to quote Bear Grylls - Get You Out Alive).
In his stick making workshops: you will be taught the basic techniques to enable you to create your own stick. These include how to make a peg joint, shaping the handle and attaching it to the shank. All materials are pre-prepared so it is a day spent constructing the stick. There is a choice of different handles, selection of wood and styles of stick. This course is for people aged 18 and over (due to insurance requirements). These classes are held in Otley and run from the last weekend in October until the last weekend in March. Individual tuition or groups (maximum of four people)
even cheaper to run and even more eco-friendly than the toilets in Knaresborough which also won this top award. The industry is improving all the time and I am pleased that we can keep up with it. “The council has set itself a target of reducing our carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. And we are certainly on target with 10.5 per cent as of this year. This is a saving of 1180 tonnes of CO2 – or the same amount produced by 70 households.” Measures the council has introduced to make these savings include: ● installing a combined heat and power plant at the Harrogate International Centre which produces a large amount of heat and electricity, using an environmentally-friendly fuel made from waste fish oil. ● new improved swimming pool covers coupled with new energy monitoring systems at leisure centres; and ● following the introduction of the new waste collection service, carbon emissions from the council’s fleet has been reduced by 8 per cent .
A volunteer at Talon Falconry, Ripon – Stuart is now getting a thorough education in the handling, training, flying and welfare of owls and hawks. Intent on starting his own collection of birds of prey with a barn owl this last December at his home in Ripon, he sees the opportunity to develop his interest into a business venture and thus WildmanBirdsOfPrey was founded. On offer in 2014 will be local opportunities in and around Ripon, Harrogate and the surrounding areas for meet the bird sessions, photographs, hawkwalks, static and flying displays as well as catering for the more unusual with birthday parties and special occasions as well as visits to schools. A unique combination of bushcraft and falconry as well as hunting (knowing what time of day your prey will come out and what to look for) is also to be available. The falconry courses teach you correct handling techniques, weight management and specific housing requirements.
This course is designed to strengthen your mental endurance and to give you the basics of camp management, hunting, preparing animals for eating, fire starting. It is an intensive course even though it is basic – you will be put through a real life scenario as if you were in that situation. Even though these are basic bushcraft courses they are designed to simulate real-life situations, to teach you the methods of creating your own equipment from your surroundings or to teach you to apply basic techniques to any given scenario. Both ‘one to one’ and group tuition is available. ‘Dads and Lads’ courses are run from the first weekend in April until the last weekend in September. Not only are they designed to build a bond between Father and Son but also incorporates teamwork in the bigger world.

Nature in the Garden
It’s a crisp, silent morning and Jack Frost has waved his wand. Stood at the door you see a carpet of glittering ice and your breath eddies into the wintry air. But look closer and you’ll spot Mr Robin Redbreast busy foraging, the snowdrops beginning to push through and many signs of nature’s enterprise. So don your hat, scarf and gloves and get out there to explore winter’s visual and sensual delights. Winter brings us some truly beautiful sights and it’s a fun and special time in our gardens. It can feel as if life outdoors has ground to a halt but there’s plenty going on and lots to do in preparation for another busy year. Many shrubs and trees are currently dormant and it’s the perfect time to get some winter pruning done. This will create balanced structure and increase the health of overgrown and damaged specimens. additionally, you can add bare-root trees now to compliment your existing layout. Don’t forget, many birds and animals benefit from a helping hand in these colder months so think about

Wildlife Corner – Winter Jobs
If you can make one resolution in the new Year to come then let it be to help your wildlife friends. Winter can be a tough time for British wildlife. Our gardens have become an essential source of food and habitats. Gardens can often have a dynamic mosaic of vegetation and aspects and act like oases within less diverse surroundings. Many species can survive and flourish because of our gardens so why not try some of the following:
●
Feed badgers and hedgehogs – proprietary foods or dog/cat food are best
●
Make attractive log and twig piles and leave areas untouched – this provides invertebrates with essential shelter for wildlife through the long and cold winter months
●
Keep bird baths free of ice – birds need to drink and bathe in order to keep hydrated and optimize their insulation
●
Leave a tennis ball in the pond – this helps to keep an area free of ice and increase oxygenation
●
Create feeding stations – help birds and small mammals through the winter by supplementing their diets with natural foods and have the added wonder of watching them feed and learn a few species names!

Yorkshire Cricketer goes in to bat for local company using a granite defence! Yorkshire opening batsman Adam Lyth visited local granite worktop manufacturer Dales of Thirsk to celebrate their birthday as the company reached… 134 not out!
To mark the occasion Adam was presented with a unique granite cricket bat and put it to the test with two budding local cricketers Ben & Harry Collinson who are both members of the Yorkshire Cricket Board Pathways to excellence programme. Adam has been closely involved with Dales of Thirsk for a number of years as he lives locally and the team at Dales are keen followers of Adams flourishing career especially as he has mentored and encouraged local cricketing talents and takes a keen interest in their progress.
“I don’t think the use of a granite bat would be allowed the current Ashes series nor at Headingley next season” joked Adam “but it was really great to see how much skill and expertise goes in to making granite and marble kitchen worktops and I am delighted to join Neil and his team at Thirsk to celebrate this anniversary” Dales of Thirsk were founded in 19th Century by Kirby Dale and have provided advice, knowledge and experience in the manufacture of granite and marble products since the 19th Century. The core business has largely remained memorial stones and kitchen and bathroom worktops but the company also takes requests for signs, wine coolers, fire hearths and other bespoke products. “We are proud to have reached this milestone,” said Managing Director Neil Collinson, “and thrilled to be able to capitalise on the six generations who have successfully built this business. We are well placed to take advantage of our investment in modern technology at Thirsk and to take on the challenge of meeting customer requests although to date we have only made one granite cricket bat!” Dales of Thirsk extend an invitation to visit their showroom in Thirsk and further details can found by visiting www.dalesofthirsk.co.uk or by calling 01845 522523. Gather up the scraps with the second disc of dough and continue to roll out the dough and cut out the cookies. Cut out the centres of half the cookies using a smaller heartshaped cutter. 9 Transfer the cookies to the
baking sheets and bake for 12 - 14 minutes or until the cookies are golden, dry, and firm to the touch. These cookies don’t spread so don’t have to be spaced out too far apart. 10 Remove from the oven and
allow to cool while the second batch is baking. 11 Heat up some jam in the
microwave or on the stove top until it is warm. Spread half to a teaspoon-full of jam on the cookie and place a cookie with a cut-out centre on top. Lightly dust with powdered sugar before serving. If you don’t want the jam to be sprinkled with icing sugar, you can dust the cookietoppers with the cut-out centres first, then place them on top of the jammy bases before serving.

What’s On in Masham? Grewelthorpe Village Hall, Grewelthorpe, 10:00 - 17:00
From Ronnie Scott’s to rural spots
A group of award-winning musicians swapped dinner jackets for waxed jackets as they toured across the county in aid of a Thirsk based charity last month. Michael Janisch, who has performed on MTV, the Michael Parkinson Show, the David Letterman Show, Strictly Come Dancing, and The Brit Awards, lead the four-piece band. He was joined by award-winning drummer Andrew Bain (Dave Liebman, Jon Irabagon), Paul Booth on saxophone (Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton) and Nigerian-born British jazz guitarist Femi Temowo who started his career at Leeds College of Music. Since then Temowo has studied in London and America and worked as musical director for Amy Winehouse before he was nominated for a MOBO award in 2012. The group wowed audiences in Weaverthorpe, (Ryedale) Thirsk, (Hambleton) and Eldroth (Craven) with music from Janisch’s critically acclaimed album “Purpose Built Quartet”.
jazz ‘aficionados’ (in the audience) were absolutely spell bound.” Top venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and The Vortex Jazz Clubs usually host these musicians, so performing in village halls and touring rurally was a new platform for the band. They really took to it with Janisch commenting that “it was fantastic, the venues were intimate and the crowds were great!” So how did this these performers end up in the Dales? ON Tour is a rural touring scheme run by the charity Rural Arts and is part of a wider national network, bringing high quality professional performances to rural venues.
“They raised the roof!” said Jill Wilson a volunteer promoter from Weaverthorpe, “Fantastic musicianship combined with warm and witty personalities made this a memorable event”.
The scheme is supported by the Arts Council England, Craven and Ryedale District Councils and has recently worked with the National Rural Touring Forum and Jazz Services to bring Michael Janisch to these rural communities. Jill said, “the fact that Rural Arts ON Tour enables us to bring such fantastic acts to the middle of nowhere is amazing and much appreciated by the communities along the Wold Valley!”
Maureen Nicholas from Eldroth, was pleased to sell out her village hall, saying that people travelled from far and wide to see the band and “the real

Jez Lowe is widely regarded as one of the best narrative songwriters in the UK, and he has written extensively for the BBC Radio 2 ‘Radio Ballads’ series, that won two SONY Radio Academy Awards. Originally from Easington Colliery, many of his own songs have told the tale of the rise and fall of the colliery towns and villages, and the characters and community spirit that kept the wheels turning. Known for his witty, comic folk songs as well as lyrical ballads, expect an entertaining night, with stunning musicianship from this four piece band as they take you on a journey through the best of Jez’s coal-songs new and old from ‘The Ex-Pitman’s Pot Holing Pub Quiz Team’, to the strike inspired ‘Judas Bus’, and well known classics ‘Black Diamonds’ and ‘These Coal Town Days’ that have been performed by musicians the world over. www.jezlowe.com | www.badappletheatre.com

GARDEN VIEW
A
Shady Space Light levels during January are low and the days are short, but now the winter solstice has passed, days are slowly lengthening. There are however, areas of the garden which never receive much sunlight, and these shady spaces are often the conversation starter when I speak to gardeners. A south facing garden is on the priority list of most house hunters, but in reality there must be around the same number of houses built on the dark side of the road! If you’re lucky enough to have a front and back garden, then you should have somewhere to grow the sun lovers, but it’s often a rear shady garden which causes most frustration. So what’s my answer? Embrace the shade! Shady spaces can be much more atmospheric than those open to full sun, they have a great earthy smell and can support a diverse range of plants and mosses. My suggestion is to layer the planting, so that it looks like the creation of shade is intentional. I would probably go as far as to erect a structure, such as a pergola or shade sail over the top, creating a cosy outdoor room, and use lighting to visually warm the space at night.

Your layering process begins with the boundaries. The first stage is to paint them black, and before you scream ‘BLACK?!’ out loud, hear me out. Painting the boundaries black will help them to fade into the background once plants mature. The second stage is to clothe the fences and walls with climbers. Although hated by some, Ivy is perfect for this, but other things to try are shade-tolerant Honeysuckles or wall shrubs such as Hydrangea petiolaris and Garrya elliptica. For additional flower colour, why not cram in a couple of Clematis?
So there you have it, a shady oasis, and as with most things in life, if you fully embrace it, a north facing shady garden can be magical. Until next time,
Happy gardening!
Introduce height with a small tree such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ or the evergreen Trachycarpus fortunei. Clump forming bamboo makes a great vertical accent, as does the banana Musa basjoo. Next in our ‘shade lasagne’ are the shrubs such as the purple leaved Acers, Viburnum tinus, Box (which can be clipped into shapes to add formality) and Sarcococca. Smaller perennials such as Astilbe, Aconitum and Hellebores provide colour and finally ferns such as the evergreen Asplenium scholopendrium supply wonderful glossy ground cover. Keep Warm This Winter - Top Tips A drop in body temperature can lower the body’s resistance to germs, so if you are elderly or otherwise susceptible to cold-related illnesses, it is essential that you stay warm during winter. • First, keep your home warm. Consider creating a ‘warm room’ where you
spend most of your time, and turn down the thermostat in other areas of the home. • Next, eliminate draughts. Place plastic sheeting over windows and fit foam seals and weather strips to doors. Use draught excluders and if you can’t successfully stop a draught rearrange the furniture so that you are not sitting in it. • Close the curtains at night to reduce heat loss and make sure that radiators aren’t blocked by furniture or curtains. • Wear several layers of thin clothing to insulate your body, keep feet warm in fleece slippers and use lightweight throws or fleece blankets to cover feet and shoulders. • Make sure you eat well as food creates energy which in turn creates heat. Hot meals and drinks can warm the body both inside and out. • Finally, stay active! Doing a little light cleaning or some other simple activity will increase your circulation and generate some heat. Follow these simple guidelines and hopefully you will not only stay warm this winter, but you will also remain illness free! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
