Inheritance Tax Planning ‘Using Gifts’ People who don’t consider IHT planning before they die could be storing up problems for the loved ones they leave behind. To reduce this problem, there are a number of options which can be used in combinations such as; gifting; the use of Trusts; Life insurance plans or the use of business property relief schemes. Over the next few issues we the couple and £1,000 shall be exploring these in more detail. from any other person. One way to lessen a potential IHT bill is simply to ‘gift’ your assets away. There are a number of gifts available to individuals that are totally exempt from Inheritance Tax: • Annual Exemption – you can make an annual gift of up to £3,000. If it is not used in a tax year, the balance can be carried forward to the next year but is lost if not used that year. • Small Gifts – gifts of up to £250 to any one person in any one tax year are exempt. This cannot be used in conjunction with the annual exemption i.e. you cannot gift £3,250. • Normal Expenditure – gifts are exempt if they are shown to be normal expenditure, paid out of income and don’t affect your usual standard of living. • Gifts on Marriage or Civil Partnership – exempt gifts include: £5,000 from a parent of the couple, £2,500 from a distant family member such as a grandparent of
• Gifts made to children who are not relatives remain exempt as long as they are in fulltime education. Any assets that you give away will fall outside of your taxable estate seven years after the gift was made. However, if a person dies within this seven year period, the full value of the gifts will still be included in the final IHT bill. The rate of IHT due reduces if the donor survives between three and seven years.
Should you keep records? There is no formal obligation to keep records of gifts that you make while you are alive but it would be very helpful to your executors. If you think they are exempt gifts then explain why. Keep these documents with your will so that they are easily found. Everything that makes up the estate left by a spouse or civil partner will be taken into account when calculating the allowance on the surviving spouse’s or civil partner’s estate.
Next issue: Inheritance Tax Planning – ‘Using Trusts’ People use trusts to help ensure that assets can be given to beneficiaries but in a timely and controlled manner, and without incurring an IHT bill.

Jennyruth Workshops: Winter Update
We are all delighted to be able to share the great news that our founder, Barrie Evason and his family have been to Buckingham Palace to collect his MBE from Prince William. Barrie has been awarded an MBE “for establishing Jennyruth Workshops, a place of work for people who have learning disabilities”. Thanks to Twitter and Facebook, the news spread all over the world really quickly. One follower wrote “great recognition for all your efforts Sue and Barrie! You have changed so many perceptions and so many lives.” Barrie commented on his award “I was just the one who had the idea. Many people, some with professional skills and many who were just prepared to come along and give us their support, are responsible for that initial idea coming to fruition. I’m only sorry I can’t cut up the award and give them all a piece, but whenever any of them see the letters MBE after my name I hope they will take it as their reward, too.…my reward is seeing the wonderful place we have, where people who have learning disabilities can come to gain skills, use those skills, and live a rewarding life.” We think this is summed up by a comment from one of our learning disabled workers Chris, “I feel important here, it’s a wonderful place to be.”
Our outdoor learning area
We have made a start on developing our outdoor area at the workshops into an outdoor learning area for groups and schools and to showcase our habitat range. We have worked closely with all workers, volunteers and staff as well as other organisations such as Open Country and Thirsk Wildlife Haven to open up an area for paths, planting and seating as well as bug hotels and a pond.
Figures for Ripon
Jennyruth Workshops have received a Ripon City Small Grant to design and create 6 wooden painted large figures that will help tell the story of Ripon. These figures may well include Saint Wilfrid, the Hornblower, a workhouse child/master, a convict/judge/policeman and Alice in Wonderland characters. These colourful figures will be available for display at community events, schools and local organisations and possibly for display on the approaches to Ripon to advertise the variety of places and people associated with Ripon. We welcome any suggestions for these figures which will be completed by the end of March. Nature
Creating spac es for yourself, family and wil dlife
in the Garden
Jack Frost’s icy fingers now caress the garden and much lies dormant and poised. The rhythms of life seem almost to have halted but be assured, nature is taking a breath before the Spring rush. The days are getting slowly lighter and longer and it’s good for all to have a rest, take stock and contemplate the delights the coming year could bring. Looking at the garden through your window can frame an idea. Personally, I enjoy sitting back, with a cup of tea, and letting my imagination wander between the birds fleeting through and the silhouettes of the trees. A meandering water feature may take shape or perhaps a courtyard area dappled in bloom. I plant these ideas on paper and see what grows. So, why not try it yourself and see what spaces you want to create for your
family wildlife.

Wildlife Corner: Creature Comforts Winter can be the most difficult time of all for many of our wild neighbours. Food is scarce and shelter becomes essential. There are creatures great and small in your garden, with varying needs, so think about how you can help them to keep protected through the coming months. Here are a few tips to get you started: • Small animals (creepy crawlies) need little gaps to hide in – bamboo, stacked slate, gravel
• Some animals (hedgehogs) like to keep dry – e.g. waterproof roof over a log pile • Many creatures (mice) tuck up warm – hay, piles of leaves, untidy corners • For others (newts) it’s peace and quiet – undisturbed areas. Also, see our previous adverts on our website news page to see how to keep wildlife fed and watered over this period. Keeping your creatures comfortable leads to great garden health.

DOES MY CAT NEED GROOMING? Most cats are able to groom themselves, some cats however need extra help. Older cats may no longer be supple enough to groom properly or may possibly have arthritis. Others (like my own dear Tabitha) are just plain lazy. Proper grooming keeps the coat in good condition but more importantly prevents the formation of mats. Matted fur can be a source of irritation for your cat and prevent air from reaching the skin thereby providing the conditions for parasites to thrive. It doesn’t matter whether your pet is a short-haired moggy or a prize Persian, he or she is likely to benefit from regular grooming. Even the smallest tangle can become an irritating mat, and the cleanest cat can benefit from having it’s dead hair removed.
This space from only
Hambleton Cat Care now provides a cat grooming service in the Northallerton, Thirsk, Easingwold, Ripon and Bedale areas.

This year’s production is Aladdin and the Pirates, a modern take on the traditional family pantomime story. ?Set in Old Peking, the story centres around Widow Twankey and her son Aladdin who is in love with the Emperor’s daughter Princess Eugenie. Meanwhile, evil pirate Captain Abanazer and his wicked crew trick Aladdin into helping them locate a magical lamp on Pirate Island. The Gene Genie who appears from the lamp sets out to help Captain Abanazer become the richest and most powerful man in the kingdom, kidnap the Princess and turn Aladdin’s dreams to dust. Yes, he listened to Buxtehude and developed this 18th Century form to an extraordinary degree, but Shostakovich, Bartók, Mozart, Handel, Britten, Beethoven and many more have produced wonderful fugues in many styles for many combinations of instruments. Chinese New Year 2017 Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 28 January. In China many people will take a whole week off from work to mark the celebration. It is known as the Spring Festival. On New Year’s Eve, Reunion Dinner is eaten. Many Chinese believe this is the most important meal of the year. It is usually shared by several generations and consists of fish, dumplings, spring rolls, glutinous rice cakes and sweet rice balls. To mark New Year, red lanterns are hung in the street, red couplets are pasted on doors and images of prosperity displayed. Fireworks are lit and it’s believed that the person who launches the first firework of the New Year will have good luck. Lion and Dragon Dances take place and these are intended to scare away evil, and attract health, wealth and wisdom. Many New Year activities have links with Chinese legends. New Year is called Guo Nian which means ‘celebrate a New Year’ or ‘overcome Nian’. Nian was an ancient sea living monster who came onto land on New Year’s Eve to eat people and livestock. One year, an old man with white hair and a ruddy
New Year’s Resolutions You’ll Want to Keep All too often New Year’s resolutions seem to focus on doing more of what we don’t enjoy, and less of what we do enjoy. So this issue, we thought we’d give you our suggestions for resolutions you’ll actually want to keep.
Learn something new Whether you want to get a qualification so you can get a better job, or you just fancy trying a new hobby, make 2017 the year you try something new. www.futurelearn.com is a good place to start. It offers hundreds of free, short online courses. Many are delivered by leading UK universities. You could try writing fiction, exploring digital technologies, or learning about forensic science. If you prefer face-to-face tuition, check out the courses offered by your local college. You could improve your computer skills, take up a new craft, or find out how to delve into your family history.
Enjoy time outdoors Nature is good for you. It’s been proven to help with depression, anxiety, stress and a whole lot of other issues. It may even help you to live longer. We know the great British weather doesn’t always make it the most tempting prospect. But if the sun breaks through the clouds, wrap up warm, pull your wellies on and head for your nearest green space. You’ll likely find you feel calmer and happier as a result.
Take time to cook Home cooked meals are usually much better for you than ready meals. They’re higher in vitamins and minerals, and lower in salt and sugar. So, try resolving to cook for yourself a few days a week. If you struggle to find

complexion managed to scare away the monster by pasting red papers on to doors, burning bamboo which made a loud cracking sound, lighting candles in the houses and wearing red clothes. Another monster called Sui was said to terrify children whilst they slept. Parents would stay up all night watching and lighting candles to try and keep their children safe. One official’s family gave their child eight gold coins to play with. The child wrapped the coins in red paper and then played at unwrapping them and wrapping them back up until he got so tired he fell asleep. The parents put the coins under the child’s pillow and legend has it that when Sui came and tried to touch the child, the eight coins omitted such a strong light that it scared the demon away. This is the basis for why elders and those who are married give children and young unmarried people red envelopes with coins in them at New Year. The red envelope is called Yasui Qian which means suppressing Sui money and the purpose is to scare away the monster and bring good luck. According to Chinese astrology, each year is associated with an animal symbol. There is a 12 year cycle and 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. The China Highlights website says that those born in the Year of the Rooster are observant, hardworking, confident and courageous. They are best matched with those born in the Year of the Ox or Snake. By Susan Brookes-Morris
the time, you could try a box scheme. Simply Cook, for example, post you the herbs, seasonings and recipes to make simple (but delicious) meals in around 20 minutes. You just add four to six items of fresh food and follow the instructions. Hello Fresh go even further. They send you everything you need to make a meal, including simple-tofollow recipes.
Appreciate the little things We’re often so busy; we don’t get time to really appreciate the little things in life. A soak in the bath, your favourite radio programme, a chat with an old friend… Taking a moment to be thankful can make us happier and calmer, and improve our relationships. You could try listing three things that you’re grateful for before you go to sleep each night, or keeping a daily gratitude journal. Or just try to give thanks to the people you love a bit more often. Whatever your New Year’s resolution, we wish you all the luck in keeping it. By Kate Duggan

GARDEN VIEW
A Winter Haven In the depth of winter garden birds bring us so much pleasure. Squabbling on feeders, their colours and songs brighten gloomy days. Birds play a vital role in our gardens’ ecosystems. They are feathered pest controllers, eating everything from snails to aphids to wind-fall fruits.

How to tackle driving in the snow • Wear comfortable and dry footwear • Accelerate gently, use low revs and change up to a higher gear as quickly as possible • Move off in second gear as this will help reduce wheel slip - some cars have a winter mode, which does the same job – so to check whether your car has this function in the vehicle’s handbook • Get your speed right and maintain safe stopping distances between you and the car in front, leaving as much as 10 times the normal recommended gap • Prepare for an uphill by leaving plenty of room in front so you can maintain a constant speed without the need for changing gear • Use a low gear for going downhill and try to avoid braking unless necessary, make sure you leave plenty of space between you and the car in front • When approaching a bend, brake before you actually start to turn the steering wheel. If your car does lose grip try not to panic; the key thing is to take your foot off the accelerator and make sure that your wheels are pointing in the direction you want to go in
• If you do encounter a skid, steer gently into it - for example, if the rear of the car is sliding to the right, steer to the right. Do not take your hands off the steering wheel or stamp your foot on the brakes • If visibility drops below a 100m, put your fog lights on. But remember to turn them off when the visibility improves. • If the road has not been gritted, be wary of driving in the wheeltracks of other vehicles as compressed snow is likely to be more icy than fresh snow • Sunglasses can help to reduce the glare of low winter sun on the snow • Keep your speed down and allow more time to stop and steer Finally, it’s important to think about the environment that you’re driving in, especially microclimates that might appear on the road. These are areas that perhaps the sun hasn’t got to, which could stay icy when the rest of the road has thawed. Bridges are a good example. They’re normally the first to freeze and the last to thaw. So be aware of that when you’re driving in open spaces.
