Grassington Players have a long history entertaining audiences in the Dales since they were founded in 1923 and have close links with the ‘real’ Calendar Girls. The original Miss January, Beryl Bamforth (now aged 78) has been a stalwart actress and director of Grassington Players since 1970. John Baker, whose battle with leukemia inspired his wife Angela and her friends to produce the original ‘Alternative WI Calendar’, was House Manager and Treasurer of Grassington Players for many years and Angela has performed with the company along with fellow Calendar Girl Lynda Logan. The production opens in Grassington on 31st August, a day before any other amateur group in the country is granted license to perform the play. The cast taking on the challenge are now in rehearsal; many of them seasoned players of the company. Having performed in 35 years on the amateur stage in London, Surrey and Bristol, Mark Bamforth - son of the aforementioned ‘real’ Miss January - plays the dying man, John Clarke, while his partner, Jane Ellison-Bates plays alongside him in the role of the courageous widow, Annie Clarke. A member of the Players for 21 years, she starts rehearsals straight from directing the Players spring production, The Cracked Pot. Paula Vickers returned to Grassington having trained and performed for eight years in the professional theatre in Cardiff; she takes on the lead role of Chris Harper whose enthusiasm drives the girls through their bitter-sweet adventure. Playing her husband, Rod Harper, is Les Kerkham. Always a masterful force of nature on the Players stage,

Please mention “infocus” when contacting any of our advertisers

Les has played more than 60 roles for Grassington Players in the forty years he has been a member. Samantha Harrison plays the glamorous golfer Celia. A local girl, Samantha went to Arts Educational School of Performing Arts at the age of 10 and her professional debut was in “Don Quixote” at the London Coliseum with Rudolph Nureyev and the Zurich Ballet Company. Quite apart from the emotional bond with the real Calendar Girls whose story the play depicts, the Grassington cast are also reminded of fellow Players they have lost to cancer and two members who are even now struggling to fight the disease. Director Ed Williams explains “The play strikes a real chord with all the cast and it is our aim to make our production a real tribute and celebration of the magnificent work that our friends the real Calendar Girls have done in raising over £3 million pounds to help Leukaemia Research find a way to beat, in Tim Firth’s words, the “shitty, cheating, sly, conniving, silent disease that cancer is”. The production is sponsored by the new interiors and lifestyle destination, The Courtyard, (on the A65 near Settle) which is attracting its own rave reviews for the stunning Brasserie and distinctive retailers on offer. ........................................................................... Tickets are available from Grassington Hub on 01756 752222 for the production which runs 31st August, 1st, 6th, 7th & 8th September. www.grassingtonplayers.co.uk

Jennyruth Workshops Jonathan to carry the Paralympics Torch “Hello, Jonathan Evason here, I would just like to share my good news with you all. I have been selected to be one of the torchbearers in the 24 hour relay carrying the Paralympic flame from Stoke-Mandeville to London”. The flame lighting in Belfast, Edinburgh, Cardiff and London will begin Friday 24th August. The four flames will be taken from each of the capital cities and used to light a big flame at Stoke-Mandeville. “The torch relay begins on Tuesday 28th August from Stoke-Mandeville and I will be carrying the torch with a team of five other people on our leg of the journey”.

History of the Olympic Games

The Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, in southwest Greece. The Ancient Olympic Games were a series of competitions held between representatives of several city-states and kingdoms from Ancient Greece, which featured mainly athletic but also combat and chariot racing events. During the Olympic games all struggles against the participating city-states were postponed until the games were finished. The Olympics were of fundamental religious importance, featuring sporting events alongside ritual

sacrifices honoring both Zeus (whose famous statue by Phidias stood in his temple at Olympia) and Pelops, divine hero and mythical king of Olympia. Pelops was famous for his chariot race with King Oenomaus of Pisatis. The winners of the events were admired and immortalized in poems and statues. The Games were held every four years, and this period, known as an Olympiad, was used by Greeks as one of their units of time measurement. The Games were part of a cycle...

Free to watch events at The Olympic Games Altogether there are 620 torchbearers for the Paralympics relay. “I am very proud and very excited to have this once in a lifetime opportunity and I am looking forward to it very much! My thanks go to everyone involved in selecting me, especially Sainsbury’s Paralympic selection committee and LOCOG. Not only will I be helping to carry the Paralympic flame to its destination, but I feel I am “carrying the torch” for all my colleagues and friends who I work together with at Jennyruth Workshops, and all people with learning disabilities, to let the world know that we can achieve many things if given the chance”. We think that Jonathan was selected because he does long distance walks in Scotland to raise money for Jennyruth Workshops, having raised several thousand pounds since 2007. He has decided to do a new 107 mile coast to coast walk, The Mary Queen of Scots Way, from Loch Long on the west coast to St. Andrews on the east coast in October. Jonathan says “It is the sixth walk I have done and it is my longest yet and it will bring the total on my milometer to 539 miles, despite having an artificial hip!” He would be delighted if you felt able to sponsor him. ...known as the Panhellenic Games, which included the Pythian Games, the Nemean Games, and the Isthmian Games. The Ancient Olympic Games reached their zenith in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, but then gradually declined in importance as the Romans gained power and influence in Greece. There is no consensus on when the Games officially ended, the most common-held date is 393 AD, when the emperor Theodosius I

declared that all pagan cults and practices be eliminated. Another date cited is 426 AD, when his successor Theodosius II ordered the destruction of all Greek temples. This ancient tradition inspired Europeans in the 19th century to attempt to emulate the competition. The era of the Modern Olympic Games extends from 1896 through to the present.

Olympic Park meadows For the second year running the riverbanks around the Olympic Stadium are blooming with golden meadows of cornflowers, marigolds, Californian poppies and prairie flowers especially designed and sown to flower gold just in time for the Opening Ceremony. There are over ten football fields worth of nectar-rich annual and perennial wildflower meadows in the Olympic Park, designed by international wildflower experts from the University of Sheffield. More than a quarter of the plants for the 2012 Garden were not grown commercially in the UK and an extensive investigation was required to track down rare seeds, cuttings and bulbs. These have included hundreds of South African plants grown from a small collection in Ireland and seed collected in South Africa and thousands of rare white Chrysanthemums as well as tall Asian lilies grown from clumps provided by specialist UK display gardens. Other rare plants being grown include the ‘Compass Plant’, used by Native Americans to navigate the

prairies and ‘Summer Beauty’, an unusual flowering onion from Europe. Over ten hectares of annual and perennial meadows are being created in the Olympic Park, designed and sown to flower during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The annual meadows around the Olympic Stadium are a vivid combination of tickseed, cornflower, corn marigold, star of the veldt from South Africa, Californian poppy and Plains Coreopsis that moves from yellow and blue in July to gold in August. The meadows, which are sown on an annual basis, are being trialed for the second year to perfect the team’s extensively researched technique of irrigation, late sowing and cutting back that will ensure the flowers peak for the Opening Ceremony in 2012. A combination of shorter and taller perennial meadows, which require only a single seeding, have been sown across the Olympic Park, mainly in the north of the parklands. The shorter meadows on drier sunny slope are a colourful mix of Thyme, Calamint, oringanum, vipers bugloss and wild carrot. The taller meadows on shadier slopes include musk mallow, meadow

cranesbill, devils bit scabious, red clover, bloody cranesbill and great burnet. The meadows have been designed to be nectar and pollen rich, diverse and with a long flowering season to encourage a range of bees, butterflies, birds, moths and other insects. Specific plants and flower species have been selected to encourage particular wildlife, for example the Marsh Fritillary butterfly need Devils Bit Scabious for their caterpillars and Burnet Moths congregate around Knapweed flowers. The meadows are being sown in especially designed low nutrient soil, with a high sand content, to ensure a diverse mix of flowers and to discourage weeds. After the Games the meadows will gradually incorporate a range of grasses, naturally and through oversowing, so they become selfsustaining and support particular butterfly larvae such as Meadow Brown. Wildlife and Water - So What’s New… Our British climate is certainly dampening our spirits. We have all experienced the challenging weather conditions this year and it isn’t always easy to keep our enthusiasm for gardening whilst getting soaked! However, the water is great for our native flora and fauna and a well designed garden can look beautiful all year round. In order to create a captivating garden you need to plan what you want from the area and how to achieve it. A design can then be created to put your new area into context within it’s surroundings. It will help to have a common theme, such as wildlife or water, that will link the design together. I work in harmony with nature and natural materials to design and produce stunning, balanced landscapes. I believe it is essential to support wildlife, wherever possible, as this leads to healthier gardens. Going green doesn’t have to cost the earth and we can all do our bit in the garden. Affordable wildlife projects include installing bird boxes, toad houses

or even stumperies. If your budget can stretch a bit further then why not create a pond. Ponds support a varied range of creatures and plants and form a hub of aquatic activity. It’s rewarding to enjoy the results of your wildlife projects. Seating areas, access and sight lines can be sympathetically designed and built into the framework of the garden to promote active involvement with your wild neighbours.

Next edition I’m going to discuss what you can do through the autumn and early winter to get that bit more from your garden. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding garden landscaping, then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes on 07739 071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk. Happy Gardening!

Support for Ripon’s Development Harrogate Borough Council has pledged its support to help Ripon’s future via two government-backed deals. The council’s Planners applied for the city to become a front runner in the government’s Neighbourhood Planning Scheme and they have just learned that they have been successful. This means that the government will give the borough council £20,000 to support the preparation of a neighbourhood plan for the City. Ripon is one of 108 successful projects to receive this round of funding. Dave Allenby, Harrogate Council’s Chief Planner (Forward Planning), explains why this is good news for Ripon. “Neighbourhood planning is a new right for communities introduced through the Localism Act 2011. It means that communities can shape the development and growth of a local area through the production of a neighbourhood development plan. “These plans will become part of the local statutory development plan and will form the basis for determining planning applications in that area.” The council has also pledged support for the Greater Ripon Improvement Partnership’s (GRIP) bid to the government to become a Mary Portas Town team. If successful it could bring in over £100,000 to regenerate the

city’s main shopping streets. Under the terms of the project, a local authority must be the accountable body. GRIP has approached Harrogate Borough Council which has said it will take this on if the bid is successful. The council’s Economic Development Team assisted GRIP with the bid itself. The council has also pledged in-kind officer support, through its Economic Development, Planning, Tourism, Finance and Corporate Policy teams, to assist with the bid’s implementation. This has been valued at £32,000, which would be used as match funding, another necessary criteria under the rules of the project. Kathryn Daly, Harrogate Council’s Acting Head of Property and Economic Development, said: “The Mary Portas Review carried out last year, made a number of key recommendations aimed at identifying what government, local authorities, businesses and communities could do together to promote the development of new models of prosperous and diverse high streets. The government is looking to support twelve Town Team pilots.

WASTE REVIEW GETS UNDERWAY IN HARROGATE DISTRICT

Nearly 16,000 homes are to be included in the first phase of Harrogate Borough Council’s review of household waste collections. From 2 July, these homes will use wheeled bins for household waste that can’t be recycled and which will be sent to landfill. In the next week, on the same day, the council will collect waste put out by residents for recycling. The same day collection service for household waste and recycling is just one of the improvements being made to the waste service which will also include a full Bank Holiday catch up and improved recycling facilities. The council is providing a second recycling box as it will now also take plastic bottles from these homes and residents will also be able to include card such as cereal boxes or washing soap boxes and greetings cards. These are all things that residents have told the council they want to be able to recycle from home. Harrogate Borough Council is the

24 Ripon & Masham infocus

last local authority in North Yorkshire to move to this way of collecting household waste and it has the lowest recycling rate in the county. The cost of burying waste in landfill is rising. In 2011 North Yorkshire County Council had to pay £9.1m in landfill tax for the amount of waste that had to be buried. So it is important that people are offered the chance to recycle more and to make it easier for them to do so. This is vital if we are to drive down landfill tax which is ultimately born by the council-tax payer. As part of these improvement measures, Harrogate Borough Council has also introduced a ‘look up’ service on its website. By putting in a post code in the My Area section, residents will be able to see full details of their waste collection service including dates of Bank Holiday catch up.

“Areas must be able to demonstrate the potential for improvement and provide an accompanying statement from the local authority on securing value for money for taxpayers in the use of the grant. We have been happy to support this bid and we think Ripon is a front runner on this project too.|” Local residents can also help. People are being urged to look at Ripon’s submission on YouTube as each time someone views, it climbs further up the league table. To view the bid, search for Ripon Portas Pilot. Judith Donovan CBE, GRIP Chairman, adds: “Bids require strong leadership and the Greater Ripon Improvement

Partnership has shown willing to take on this role but we are grateful to Harrogate Borough Council for their support. We have also identified other match funding which will come from Ripon City Council’s commitment to provide a three year contracted City Centre Manager post, as well as in-kind funding from local visitor attractions, businesses and the local media.” The proposal to form a Town team has widespread support across the city too, with Ripon City Council, Ripon Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Ripon Retail Forum, Ripon Ring, Ripon Civic Society, Ripon Council for Voluntary Services and Ripon Cathedral already on board.

Pension Income If you have a form of pension where the pension fund is building up until you reach retirement (Personal Pension, Stakeholder Pension, SIPP or a defined contribution pension with your employer), you will have a number of options as to how you receive your pension income. You will normally be able to take up to 25% of the fund as a lump sum which is not taxed. The remaining fund after any tax free lump sum will be taken as a form of income and will be subject to income tax. The main options are to use your pension fund to buy an annuity or to use pension drawdown.

Annuity An annuity pays you an income for the rest of your life, however long you live. In this case your pension fund is used to buy an annuity from a life insurance company. You can add different options and get different types depending on your needs and circumstances. For example, the annuity can increase once in payment at a fixed amount or in line with inflation. Annuities tend to be most appropriate if you have a smaller pension fund. Also available are investment linked annuities where the income which you receive will depend on the performance of the underlying investments. The rationale for buying an investment-linked annuity is the hope of getting higher income payments

26 Ripon & Masham infocus

in the longer term by taking the investment risk. Of course the income may go up or down depending on the performance of the investments. For this reason, these type of annuities are more appropriate for individuals whose circumstances allow them to take more risk.

Pension Drawdown Pension drawdown is more flexible than buying an annuity and within limits allows you decide how much income you are able to take from year to year. There are two types of pension drawdown: Capped Drawdown and Flexible Drawdown Capped drawdown has an upper limit equivalent to the amount of income which would be paid to an individual buying an annuity. There is no minimum amount so you can withdraw any level of income as long as it’s below this limit. The limit is reviewed every 3 years until age 75 and every year thereafter. If you choose to take the maximum amount, there is a greater risk that at the review the amount of income which you are able to take is lower.

way will be subject to income tax. However, the flexibility allows for some careful tax planning. As well as the above options, they can be mixed and matched to support your individual requirements. For example, to provide the level of income that you require, it’s possible to phase the tax free cash withdrawals and use this and capped drawdown to give you the level you require. With choice, comes a degree of complexity and timely financial advice from making sure you get value when you buy an annuity to coming up with a plan to withdraw your pension via pension drawdown has great value. Please contact me for help and advice with any aspects of your pension.

Flexible drawdown allows you to withdraw as much as you want and is conditional on you having secure income of at least £20,000 per annum. (Secure income can be State Pension, Pension Annuities and Scheme Pensions). All income withdrawn in this
