New Year
New Garden Possibilities!
Winter is a hard time for gardens and wildlife. Many plants are now dormant and the wildlife that is still active has to work much harder to make a living. Therefore, it can really help nature by providing food sources, alternative habitats and creative planting in your garden at this time of the year; and additionally, this will result in more abundant colour and visual interest in what can be a bleak and bare season. Therefore, don your scarf and gloves, bring the wheelbarrow out of retirement and explore your winter garden. Now is a good time to hang bird feeders, plant new native and exotic trees and shrubs and provide overwintering sites for wild garden inhabitants. In addition, you can build a compost heap, coppice or pollard suitable existing trees and dig a wildlife pond. More specifically, you can create and manage your borders through careful planting and maintenance so that they are abundant with berries, colourful and textured stems, and architectural perennials that will catch the morning frost and give warm colour and form in the winter months. It is possible to make your garden beautiful and

beneficial to wildlife all year round. It simply requires planning, dedication and a certain amount of time; the plants and wildlife will do the rest. Furthermore, now is the time to start thinking about spring and what you’d like to create in the garden this year. It’s good to plan landscaping and planting projects now so you are ready to improve and grow your space in the spring and summer months. Maybe a mossy rustic stone circle or a woodland stumpery would add that next layer to your existing site, or even a new design altogether!? If you have any questions regarding your garden, then please contact Timothy Campbell Landscapes (BSc (Hons) Envoronmental Conservation) on 07739 071012 or visit: www.timothycampbelllandscapes.co.uk
Stinking hellebore – Helleborus foetidus (Right) A native British plant that flowers between midwinter and spring. This benefits bees as a winter and spring source of nectar and provides height, colour and interest through the cold months. Cornus sanguinea ‘Winter Beauty’ A native cultivar that has exceptionally beautiful winter stems. In addition, the leaves turn deep red before they fall in autumn. Rowan, mountain ash – Sorbus aucuparia (Right) A native tree with various related cultivars to select from. This attractive tree produces bright red or yellow berries in autumn that feed birds through winter as well as nectar rich flowers in late spring. The tree has a pleasing growing habit and benefits many moths, bees and other insects.
Happy Gardening!
Wildlife Corner – Winter Jobs • Feed badgers and hedgehogs with proprietary foods or dog food. Bread and milk isn’t their natural diet so don’t be tempted to offer them these. • Introduce wildlife hotels: bug, bird and owl boxes or hedgehog and toad houses. • Make attractive log and twig piles to provide essential shelter for wildlife in the cold winter months. Rustic stone, straw bales and prunings also work. • Leave an area of garden untouched through winter. Hollow stemmed perennials and leaf litter give habitats in which ladybirds and other insects can overwinter.
• Feed birds and provide them with a birdbath. Birdbaths are a vital source of drinking water for birds so make sure you keep them free of ice with a warm pan or kettle of water. • Coppice established trees to create an understory for wildlife. The trick is to make your garden as varied and complex as possible so that more habitats and biodiversity can emerge. • Consider digging a wildlife pond. This will become the hub of biodiversity in any garden and will support the health of the rest of your site.

Fed up with soaring energy bills? Now is the time to consider Renewable Energy With the recent hike in energy prices and the prospect of further above inflation rises on the horizon there has never a better time for householders and businesses to investigate their renewable energy options. The Government’s Feed-in-Tariff incentive scheme for Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels is still available and reductions in the cost of panels mean that Solar PV remains an attractive investment that can pay for itself in 7 to 10 years. This equates to a rate of return of up to 12%, a return which is index-linked, tax free and guaranteed for 20 years. Viable PV systems are possible with any area of roof over 16m2, and more than one roof aspect can be accommodated in one system. Although a south facing pitched roof will maximise electricity production, good returns can also be achieved with other aspects from east through south to west. For those reliant on the conventional fossil fuels natural gas, oil or LPG, the winter months will have highlighted the growing costs of heating. Alternative renewable heat technologies such as Air Source Heat Pumps, Ground Source Heat Pumps and Biomass Boilers provide immediate savings and an ecological sound investment. Renewable Heat Premium Payments ranging from £850 to £1250 are still available and Renewable Heat Incentive Payments1 increase returns and shorten payback periods. EnergyMyWay have been providing customers with independent renewable energy advice and performing installations since 2008. We offer no obligation, free consultations on the full range of renewable technologies. So if you want to save money on utility bills and reduce your carbon footprint, contact Brandon Clark, your local EnergyMyWay consultant in Easingwold on 01347 824 883 to arrange a free survey. 1. The Renewable Heat Incentive is already available for commercial applications and currently scheduled to be introduced in the summer of 2013 for domestic installations.

Jennyruth works on through the floods! September saw some of the worst weather the region has experienced. The torrential rain led to the road to our workshops at Red House Farm disappearing under two feet of water, making it impassable to the cars and minibuses which bring our learning disabled colleagues to work. Although we closed on the first day of the floods, Newby Hall came to our rescue on subsequent days ferrying us in with their Land Rover. This really saved the day for us as Autumn is a key period for producing much of our Christmas stock which we sell at Christmas Craft Fairs such as that at Ripon Cathedral. Unfortunately the weather turned wet again in November and the ‘Land Rover Ferry’ was deployed once more. Newby Hall have now decided to raise the level of the road, so the Ferry may be a thing of the past Jennyruth Workshops continue to make bespoke products for the local community. Recent orders have been for Roman figures for Aldborough Roman Day, a Santa’s sleigh for a miniature railway and cricket awards for North Stainley Cricket Club. Please contact us with your requirements and we will provide a personalised quotation.

How to
improve your Maths We are all born with varying degrees of natural ability. Olympic champions reach their pinnacle by taking their abilities to the extreme by exercising both their bodies and minds to unbelievable heights. Obviously we cannot all become Olympic Champions, but we can coach our minds to improve the intake of information. There is no easy road to success, there is no wave of a magic wand, but the mind can attain optimum performance with training. Here are some guidelines to help you improve your mathematic ability:
1 SET REASONABLE TARGETS – For an adult this could be calculating the price of discounted goods to obtaining a certificate in numeracy. For a student it could be calculating areas and volumes or conquering trigonometric problems.
2 BE CONFIDENT – In reality you are exercising the mind just as an Olympian exercises the body. Do not be discouraged should you find that some of your answers are incorrect. Everyone makes mistakes so tell yourself that if we got all the questions correct all of the time then everyone would be a professor at Oxford or Cambridge.
3 SELECT A SENSIBLE STARTING POINT – You may be having difficulty knowing where to start particularly if you have not been in education for some years. There are four levels of education:
• Entry Level Qualification Right for you if you have no previous qualifications Example (without calculator)
a) Write down 2 numbers from the list below that add up to 50 b) Which numbers are divisible by 3? 5

• Level 2 Qualification
Equivalent to GCSE Grades A* to C, NVQ Level 2, GNVQ Intermediate, Key Skills Level 2 or Functional Skills Level 2. Example (calculator may be used) P is the largest prime number between 50 and 100 Q is the smallest prime number between 50 and 100 Calculate the value of p – q
• Level 3 Qualification A Level, NVQ Level 3, GNVQ Advanced, Key Skills Level 3 Example (calculator may be used)
Change 4π / 5 radians to degrees
4 REPEAT EXERCISES – Repetition is a good way of learning.
5 DO NOT GIVE UP – Everyone has their“Why am I doing this?” moments. You are doing this to better yourself, you are doing it to give yourself more confidence, and you are doing it to prove a point.
6 ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE OF LEARNING – Like physical training you will feel mentally refreshed and a better person after completing each session. For advertising contact Christine on: 01609 777401 | www.jkanorth.com

PLACE MAKER VOLUNTEERS FOR THE HARROGATE DISTRICT
Welcome to Harrogate, the district’s destination management organisation, chose Ripley Castle to launch its volunteer programme ‘Place Makers’. Based on the successful London Olympics’ Games Makers, these local volunteers will be available to groups and organisations in the district to offer a ‘Welcome’ to visitors whether they are tourists or locals. They could help with anything from Christmas markets, to stewarding a concert or helping with tours of our heritage sites. Caroline Bayliss, a Director of Welcome to Harrogate Ltd, has taken on the role of co-ordinating this volunteer programme on behalf of the company. She said: “I had the very great pleasure of attending the Olympics and saw first-hand just what a difference the Games Makers made to people’s enjoyment. If you wanted to know something or find something all you had to do was ask these easily identifiable volunteers. “We will match our Place Makers’ skills and experience with the events they will able to support. We will also make sure that our Place Makers get enjoyment from these events too and we will be asking them to let us know what sort of things they want to do. This district is host and home to a wide variety of events which all need support when high numbers are expected. As the project progresses, Welcome to Harrogate will provide the Place Makers with the appropriate branding – for example this could be sashes saying Welcome to Ripon, Welcome to Pateley Bridge, Welcome to the Great Yorkshire Show, etcetera.” Above: Julia Frater, Gay Steel, John Barnett, Simon Phillips QC, Nicky Garside, Mandy Hazel Julia Frater was inspired to sign up as a Harrogate Place Makers at Ripley Castle District Place Maker following her experience as an Olympics Games Maker. She said: “I met some inspiring athletes which made me very proud to be British and an ambassador for the Olympics. I felt the Games Makers were an integral part of the tremendous success of the Games and I want to continue that contribution by being part of event volunteering in the Harrogate district. Anyone interested in becoming a Place Maker for the Harrogate district, or anyone in the district who feels they could benefit from Place Maker support, should get in touch with Viv Graham on 01423 537439 or email viv.graham@ harrogate.gov.uk Caroline Bayliss concluded: “We are so lucky to live in this beautiful part of Yorkshire and we just want the visitor to have the very best experience. The launch of our Place Makers coincided with the announcement that Yorkshire has won the bid to host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2014. I am confident that our Place Makers will be a valuable asset to this huge event that will do so much to showcase our area.”

garden tools ready for Spring
& other top January garden tips Follow the rest of our January Garden tips to ensure your garden thrives in the colder months. • Add a little compost and a thick layer of mulch to protect the tender new growth. This is an excellent use for the branches of your discarded Christmas tree. • In the event of snow, be sure to shake or brush off the white stuff from the branches of your evergreens and shrubs. The light fluffy snow poses no real threat, but if it should become wet and frozen, the weight dramatically increases. Branches are more brittle when the plants are dormant, and the weight of the snow may snap them off. • Dormant spraying of fruit trees, Cotoneaster, Dogwoods, etc. should be done around this time. • It’s a good time to prune most of your deciduous trees and shrubs. Forsythia, Jasmine and Quince
sprays can be cut and brought into the house now for forcing. The warmth in the home will bring some early bloom to your room. • Fireplace ashes should be saved to use a fertilizer for your Iris and other alkaline soil plants. • If the ground is workable at all (not frozen and not too wet), now is an excellent time to turn the soil.
Not only will this expose insect eggs to the effects of winter and hungry birds, the freezing will help to break apart heavy clods of dirt. • Houseplants-dust on the foliage can clog the leaf’s pores; so clean them up a little with a damp
cloth, or a quick shower under the tap. Actively growing plants will benefit from a shot of liquid plant food. On very cold nights, it is a good time to close the curtains or blinds between the window and your houseplants. Make certain that Pansies your plants have sufficient humidity, by setting them on a tray filled with clean pebbles, and a little water, or by simply setting a cup of water nearby. • You can force Hyacinth, Paper white Narcissus, and Lily of the valley bulbs into bloom indoors, in a
shallow bowl of water, or in pots this month. If you can’t have spring yet.... fake it! • Keep a close eye open for insects on your houseplants. If you are lucky enough to have a greenhouse, be sure to check those plants carefully too. • Extra time this month might well be spent getting the garden tools ready for spring. Sharpen and oil tools such as shovels, shears, mowers and the like. Power tools such as weed eaters and power mowers may benefit from a good tune-up. Could the wheelbarrow use a fresh coat of paint? • It’s not too early to begin to think of a strategy for new spring plantings. You might want to create a small map of your garden, and use it as a guide for ordering plants and seeds from the catalogs that will be arriving in the post soon.

Carbon Monoxide Are you at risk? Are you having headaches, having difficulty thinking clearly or feeling tired or sick? Have you had your heating and cooking appliances checked recently? Find out about the risks of exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) and how to avoid them – it could save your life.
How you can protect yourself from CO poisoning • Fit an audible CO alarm that meets European Standard EN 50291, showing a British Standards Kitemark or LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) logo. These alarms are available in homeware or DIY stores, and you must make sure that you follow the alarm manufacturer’s instructions for installation and maintenance. You may also wish to take a battery-operated audible CO alarm with you on holiday. You can also buy CO detection patches and ‘black-spot’ indicators, but these will not wake you and warn you if dangerous levels of CO develop. It is important to remember that fitting an audible CO alarm is not an alternative to having appliances, flues and chimneys serviced and tested. • Keep rooms well ventilated while using an appliance. Fumes from a room or water heater, fire or cooker may affect your health unless there is enough ventilation in the room. This also applies to running a vehicle or generator in a confined or poorly ventilated area such as a garage with the door closed. • Have all appliances, flues and chimneys correctly installed and serviced by trained, reputable, registered and competent engineers – do not attempt to do this yourself. Never use a poorly maintained appliance. Appliances should be maintained and serviced regularly (for example an annual service). By law, engineers for gas appliances must be registered with a body approved by the Health and Safety Executive. A new registration scheme for domestic gas will start in April 2009 – until then, gas engineers must be CORGI registered. Engineers for solid-fuel appliances are registered with the Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme (HETAS), and those for oil appliances with the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC).
Other important tips • If you live in rented accommodation, landlords have a legal duty to have any gas appliances they provide, including cabinet heaters and flues, checked annually and to provide you with a copy of the safety check record. Landlords also have a legal duty of care to you. For appliances that use fuel other than gas, it is strongly recommended that landlords use suitably trained, reputable, registered engineers to install, service and inspect appliances (see above). • Never install or use unflued (without a chimney) appliances such as gas cookers, flueless gas fires or cabinet heaters in small, closed-up or poorly ventilated rooms. When using a gas cooker, always make sure that the kitchen is well ventilated; a gas cooker should never be used to provide heating for the kitchen area. Do not use unflued appliances designed for outdoor use (such as paraffin heaters, camping stoves, barbecues or similar devices) inside your property. • If you’re buying a new solid-fuel open fire, room heater or boiler, check that it has an air intake control to regulate the burning rate, and that the room in which it is being installed is properly ventilated. For advice on solid-fuel heating, call the Solid Fuel Association.
• Have your chimney swept from top to bottom at least once a year, preferably before each winter if you burn smokeless fuel or twice a year if you burn wood or coal. Use a qualified sweep, such as a member of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps, the Guild of Master Sweeps or the Association of Professional and Independent Chimney Sweeps.
• Fitting an extractor fan in the same room as an appliance will be beneficial unless it affects the draw of an existing flue or chimney in the same or adjoining room, such as those used for flued appliances (in which case the extractor fan may cause the combustion gases to fill the room instead of going up the flue or chimney). It is best to seek expert advice in such situations. Other appliances such as tumble dryers can produce the same effect as an extractor fan.

Whizz the soup with a stick blender or in a food processor until it is a rough purĂŠe, pour back into the pan and add the chickpeas. Heat gently, season well and stir in the coriander.
