Autumn @ The Clock Autumn is a difficult time of year for some school, college and university leavers as they leave an establishment which has provided support and safety. The transition from education to employment can be problematic especially if the young person hasn’t secured a job.
Shannagh, who attended the course over the summer, said; “it really boosted my confidence speaking to people in all kinds of different situations like at job interviews. The staff were friendly and very helpful when I didn’t understand things”
Extensive studies demonstrate that youth unemployment is related to an increase in smoking and alcohol consumption and decrease in mental and physical health. Recent research have found that the effect of youth unemployment on mental health remains in adulthood, independent of later unemployment experiences.
The next course starts in Thirsk in September. Staff will try their best to provide transport to young people who live outside of Thirsk. If you would like more information about the course please contact Kirsty at The Clock
The Clock delivers its ‘Improving Your Prospects’ course for unemployed young people aged 16 to 24. It’s a personal development programme which will develop intra and inter personal skills and prepare participants for employment or education. Clock staff will support each young person into a job, apprenticeship or college and continue the support for the following three months.
Clock staff also provide support to unemployed adults by running drop in sessions for job searching on Mondays between 2.30pm and 4.30pm and Wednesdays between 9.30am and 11.30am. Please contact Andy for more information on Andy@theclock.org. If you’re a local employer with vacancies, please
contact Jackie Garratt on 01845 524 494 or Jackie@theclock.org. The Clock is also pleased to host Hambleton and Richmondshire Citizen’s Advice Bureau every Wednesday morning from 9.30am - 11.30am, please contact The Clock if you would like to book an appointment Our AM takes place on 27th November between 6:30pm to 8pm. Everyone is welcome but please let Oliver know if you plan on attending on Oliver@theclock.org. The difference we make to our communities could not continue if it wasn’t for the generous support we receive from individuals and organisations. We do all sorts of fundraising activities throughout the year raising both awareness of the valuable work The Clock does and vital funds to keep our organisation running.

Connection Gallery Opens in Thirsk
The Connection Gallery in Finkle St, Thirsk is home to Abstract Art, photography, ceramics and the world’s best loved candles “YANKEE CANDLE”. Majority of the abstract art displayed belongs to the Gallery owner – Dave Waddington, the photography is by Richard Gladstone – Gallerist. The ceramics are all from local ceramicists. Therefore, making this gallery exclusive to local emerging artists that can’t be currently bought or seen anywhere else. Dave’s vision is to make art “affordable” so it’s accessible to everyone who enjoys art. Dave’s art is very diverse in style and presentation. Every piece reflects no other, offering different techniques in application, textures and colour, making it stand out from the rest and from the last to the next. All pieces are ready just to hang and enjoy. The photography is both iconic and seasonal. Capturing the essence of
all things that surround us. Richard started photography by being challenged to do a daily blog and to create a daily journal for 365 days to which the photograph had to be taken on that day – he extended this to two years and beyond and is still striving to learn more and create better. His drive was always to make the next one better than the last. During this process, he studied at Teesside University to gain a better understanding of the technical side of photography. Richard has always had a passion for YANKEE Candles so he introduced those shortly after they opened. The Connection Gallery is a small gallery with the focus mainly being on abstract art, whilst photography prints are sold, the selection is limited. Spectrum Framing & Gallery celebrates 10 years! “I can’t believe it’s been ten years since we left “corporate land” to take on this adventure”, says Tim, as Spectrum Framing and Gallery in Thirsk celebrate their ten year anniversary in September. With Jo, his wife and business partner, they have developed a thriving business over this period. “We now have hundreds of repeat customers, mainly local, but also from around the country. Thirsk is a wonderful place to work, with all the independent businesses working hard to serve both locals and visitors”. Says Jo; “we are continually developing our framing skills and techniques to meet the demands of our customers. Many people are now wanting something unique on their walls. It’s important, therefore, to offer innovative, sympathetic, imaginative and creative ideas when working with the customer to find the best solution for their artwork. There For advertising contact Christine: 01609 777401 or Dwight: 01609 779097 | www.jkanorth.com
is very little we can’t frame and there is great job satisfaction in presenting the final product to the customer”. “We also continue to work with and support local artists in exhibiting their work in our Gallery”, explains Tim. “We take great pleasure in watching their progress, some of whom now enjoy national recognition. The Gallery has evolved as people’s demands for artwork changes. It’s all about listening to the customer and responding, there has been an enormous shift in the type of artwork people are now buying compared to when we started”. “As Thirsk continues to grow, we are looking forward to grow with it”, says Jo. “The ever changing needs of customers keeps the job exciting and rewarding. Here’s to the next 10 years!”

Essential tips to ensure moving house is stress free Tip #1 – Declutter It sounds like the last thing you would want to do before you move house, but actually a good declutter can be a great thing at this time. Tip #2 – Plan what will go where After a good declutter you should have a great idea of what’s in your home and what you will need to move into the new home.
14
infocus
A great tip here is to sit with a plan of your old house and a plan of your new house (a quick sketch of the floor plans is just fine!), and firstly write down what you have in your current house:Room functions and zones for everything When you have this list of items for your old house – start to transfer each category to the new house, and see what you end up with in each room. Tip #3 – Keep the essentials and important stuff with you On moving day itself, you don’t want to run the risk
of not being able to get your hands on what you need when you need it. You may be delayed actually moving in, and trying to find sleeping items and toiletries etc… in the dark in an unfamiliar house is the last thing you will want to be faced with. Tip #4 – Prioritise Now you have got all the boxes in the right rooms in the new house – it’s time to work out what you should do first. This is where overwhelm can still set in if you’re not careful.

Wet Weather Advice This time of year often brings with it some wet and windy weather. This can mean pets are spending more time indoors. Try your best to keep your dog walk routine as much as you can, even when it’s wet. If your pets are staying indoors a bit more make sure they have lots of thing to keep them mentally active. Daily dog walks and inquisitive cats in the garden aren’t just getting the exercise they need. Mental stimulation is vital to prevent pets from getting bored and frustrated and resorting to behaving in ways we would rather they didn’t! Hide your cat’s food in scrunched balls of edible paper and hide around the house so that they are encouraged to ‘hunt’ for it. Make sure their litter trays are changed as needed and remember the more cats the more litter trays you will need. Encourage the whole family to take time out for play. Not only is this huge fun for all
involved but it can really increase the bond between pets and their owners.
Protect your pet from firework fears With autumn nights soon drawing in we often talk to pet owners whose cats or dogs are terrified of the flashes and bangs fireworks celebrations bring. If your pet gets worried around this time of year check our advice at www.bluecross. org.uk or pop into the centre for a free leaflet. If you would like to find out more about Blue Cross in Thirsk, have an hour or two to volunteer at the centre or would like to make a donation to the charity’s work please contact the centre on 0300 777 1540, email thirsk@bluecross. org.uk, or join us on Facebook.
