The Easingwold Singers

This year, 2023, the choir celebrates its 120th anniversary. Quite something for a community choir and we are very proud of this achievement. By popular request, our Spring Concert will feature Faure’s Requiem, and we are delighted that Jonty Ward, Bass Songman at York Minster has agreed to join us once again as our Bass Baritone soloist. Jonty was a soloist last year when the choir presented Beethoven’s Mass in C at St Oswald’s Church Sowerby in May.

Rehearsals are progressing well and this promises to be another memorable concert adding different opera choruses to the repertoire of The Easingwold Singers as well as revisiting Faure. All in all, a varied programme of music. The date is Saturday 20 May and the venue is to be St John the Baptist & All Saints Church, Easingwold. It was felt appropriate to hold the anniversary concert in Easingwold as this is where the choir was founded although we do have many members from Thirsk, Sowerby and the surrounding villages. New singers always welcome by the way.

Looking back to our Christmas Concert December 2022 : “12 Days of Christmas” – Bob Chilcott and “Fantasia on Christmas Carols” – Ralph Vaughan Williams; what a treat and success that afternoon was. We can only thank Ed for putting it all together, our soloist and friend of the Choir, John Dunford with his wonderful voice and sense of fun, together with Matthew Atherton who played the organ and piano so magnificently. We had our largest audience ever, who were all in good voice, and excellent feedback. The “12 Days of Christmas” was such fun to sing and I am sure anybody who was there on the day, either in the choir or the audience, will retain fond memories of “The Partridge in a Pear” which surprisingly to all, kept putting in an appearance during Matthew’s organ solo. How we top this for our Christmas concert next year remains to be seen but I am sure with Ed’s ingenuity we will rise to the occasion once again.

Rather than having lots of smaller prizes for our

Charity Raffle on concert day, we decided to have two hampers with luxury items donatedbymembers of the choir with all the proceeds donated to the Easingwold District Community Care Foodbank. This was a good move and greatly appreciated by the recipients of the gift. Furthermore one of the winners of the hampers very generously donated his prize to the Thirsk Foodbank and the second hamper went to a very worthy winner too so we were delighted with the outcome.

Exciting new enterprise from Iaen at Venture Cycles.

After graduating from his bachelor of arts degree course in Three Dimensional Design, Iaen worked for Bisca, a contemporary staircase design & manufacturing company in Helmsley. He was involved in all areas

of the business throughout his employment, enjoying the design & making elements the most, but after 18 years he was looking to broaden his horizons with a new challenge.

Spring is in the air but watch out for seasonal danger

Keen gardeners will be looking forward to getting back outdoors but those with pets should think twice before adding certain plants and flowers to their garden.

Tulips can irritate your dog’s mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Normally they will only experience drooling, being sick and diarrhoea, but heart problems and difficulty breathing are also signs of tulip poisoning. Daffodils are poisonous to dogs if they eat the bulbs or flowers, or drink water from a vase with daffodils in. They can give your dog an upset stomach, make them vomit,

Iaen had always been a keen cyclist participating in both road & mountain biking events and he thought he would develop that pleasure into setting up his very own bike shop, in the heart of Thirsk’s Market Place. In just over a year away, Venture Cycles will have been open for 10 years & as everyone knows such a lot has happened; including the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire, the Tour de Yorkshire passing through Thirsk & many amateur cycling events held in the town. However, like now there have been some far more sobering times, but we seem to battle through them together.

As part of repairing lots of bicycles, the scrap parts mountain is never ending, until now! Iaen is utilising his artistic & manufacturing skills to up-cycle the old & oily broken bike bits & turn them into quality handmade bespoke homely objects to sell in his shop, local establishments & eventually online.

Late last year he started with a great success in making Christmas tree decorations from bike gear parts wrapped in ribbon; different parts,

and make them very sleepy and wobbly. A dog that’s been poisoned by daffodils might also have fits.

Bluebells, rhododendrons and the leaves and seeds of foxgloves are also toxic and can even be fatal so avoid planting in your garden and make sure dogs don’t consume any of these plants when out and about. Lilies are highly toxic to cats. Cats may want to eat them or if they brush past them in pollen they can easily absorb the poison when they groom.

Be aware at Easter that dogs will try and steal chocolate and eat it. While delicious, it is poisonous to them and cats too. It contains a chemical, theobromine, which is a bit like caffeine and is toxic to dogs and cats.

In addition to his new venture he is learning the art of photography and has set up his Instagram account, @venture_photography_england which he’d eventually like to develop, pardon the pun! Iaen says he’ll be running his new ventures alongside Venture Cycles, keeping the residents of Thirsk & its surrounding villages on two wheels....
