Spring Update @ The Clock Community Works is a new organisation; an exciting result of a merger between The Clock and Thirsk Community Care. The two charities have combined their staff, resources and services as part of their long term plan to become self-sustaining. The newly formed Board of Trustees see it as a time for ambition and are working towards Community Works being the leading voluntary organisation in the area. One of its unique selling points (usp) is the vast range of services it delivers which fall into at least one of five work streams: support, social activities, learning opportunities, TLC and enterprise. Service users are encouraged to access as many of the services as they need and aspire to other services as part of their progression. Community Works employs a highly skilled and qualified staff team however they recognise that there are times when a service user needs specialist support. Community Works’ vision is that Communities in North Yorkshire, particularly around Thirsk, are strong, resilient and vibrant and individuals in the community feel that they belong, are connected and live independent, active fulfilled lives. It will do this by increasing community resilience, improving

6

social inclusion, improving well-being and increasing economic prosperity. The year ahead will be a mix of challenges and opportunities which Community Works will embrace. Its primary focus will be to establish itself as a leading charity delivering high quality services, followed by planning and implementing new services to meet identified need. As its strap line says, it intends to ‘open doors’ for its service users in order for them to ‘unlock opportunities’ for themselves. Come along to the Methodist Church on St James Green, to find out more on 6th April 2020 between 3 and 6pm. Job Fayre We are holding a Job Fair in Thirsk Methodist Church on St James Green on Wednesday 18th March between 3 and 5.30pm. Pop in to meet employers and access support from Community Works finding work. Volunteer Recruitment event – Thursday 19th March, 4-7pm at the Library We need Volunteers! variety of exciting and rewarding roles.

Food Hampers Over Christmas The Clock was able to give out 81 Food Hampers benefitting 227 different people of all ages with a total of 7153 items. This would not be possible without the generous support of everyone who gave food be it direct to The Clock, via Churches, via Schools or at any of our collection points. This helped ease what can be a very difficult period for a lot of families. Meals on Wheels –freshly prepared meals and a dessert for just £6 per day delivered straight to your door by our team of dedicated volunteers (deliveries are not available bank holidays) Supported Shopping – 2 trips per month to different locations, with volunteers on hand to give help with reaching items off the shelves, reading labels, pushing wheelchairs, or just a bit of company while you shop. n The Mowbray Singers St. Oswald’s Church, Sowerby: 7:30pm. The Mowbray Singers performing Johannes Brahms’ German Requiem. Brahms often said that the word “German” could be replaced by “human” in the title of this beloved and ground-breaking masterpiece which was premiered with tremendous success in Leipzig in 1869. The seven movements, which are musically linked both by a three-note motive and a Bach-like chorale fragment, move the listener from sadness and grief towards comfort

and peace. The best-known movement, How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings, forms the central core of this journey. It will be Sung in English, which is how the work was first performed in England in 1871. If you want to know more about us, have a look at our website (www. mowbraysingers.co.uk) and come to the concert. Tickets are £8 (16s and under free) and are available at White Rose Books, Thirsk, choir members or telephone 01845 525091 ........................................................

News from The Easingwold Singers As we are now at the beginning of the third month of 2020, memories of celebrations from the Festive Season have faded. However, with the days gradually lengthening we are excited about our next concert in May but before moving forward would like to express our thanks for the support we were given when we held our Advent concert on 30th November 2019, A Renaissance Christmas and Christmas Carols. at St John the Baptist & All Saints Church, Easingwold. We would like to thank the church for welcoming us once more, all the people who helped us along the way and on the day, and of course our loyal audience who we cherish. We very much enjoyed the concert even though we were somewhat low on numbers as many choir members sucumbed to the winter illnesses which unfortunately were circulating at the time. However, the music was exquisite and we hope our audience enjoyed the performance which we felt set the scene for celebrating the true joy of Christmas.

Moving forward, the style and tempo for our next concert, John Rutter’s Mass of the Children and Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass, are both very different. They are contemporary pieces but equally as enjoyable and we are sure feet will be tapping once the concert gets underway. Rehearsals are progressing well and the choir members are all working very hard coming to terms with the different rhythms and nuances. The concert will be held Saturday 16th May, 7.00 pm at The Galtres Centre, Easingwold. Tickets available soon so keep watching the Advertiser / Weekly News for details as to where these can be obtained. The choir is looking forward to singing with the children from Cundall Manor School Choir and this promises to be a lively and entertaining programme bringing together the joy of music whatever age-group you are. We look forward to a fun-filled evening and appreciate our audiences full support.

Spring dangers to pets Spring is here so it’s time to spend more time in the garden and in the countryside. It is important to keep an eye on our pets when enjoying the bloom of spring flowers as some are poisonous to them.

If you think your dog has been poisoned by anything, you need to act quickly and contact your vet as soon as your pet shows signs of being ill. If you have seen your dog eat something that they shouldn’t, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Call your vet immediately and ask for their advice.

Daffodils are poisonous to dogs if they eat the bulbs or flowers, or drink water from a vase with daffodils in. They can give your dog an upset stomach, make them vomit, and make them very sleepy and wobbly. A dog that’s been poisoned by daffodils might also have fits. Tulips can irritate your dog’s mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Normally they will only experience drooling, being sick and diarrhoea, but heart problems and difficulty breathing are also signs of tulip poisoning.

To find out more about plants and foods poisonous to pets visit the advice pages of the Blue Cross website.

Bluebells, rhodedendron and the leaves and seeds of foxgloves are also toxic and can even be fatal so avoid planting in your garden and make sure dogs don’t consume any of these plants when out and about.

Looking for love – pets looking for a home to call their own Benny is a three-year-old greyhound who has been looking for love for almost 100 days without success. As a retired racing greyhound he is looking for his first proper real home and would like an owner with some experience of ex racing greyhounds. He loves nothing more than a fuss. While he does enjoy a quick run around briefly he gets tired quickly and would love to just cuddle up to snooze away the afternoons.

Willow, Suki and Socksy are a group of cats who have spent most of their lives living together as a happy trio. They have been searching for ‘the one’ (a new home) for over a month and are hoping Valentine’s Day brings them better luck in finding Mr or Mrs Right. Willow is a 16 year old Persian, Suki is 15 and also Persian and Socksy is an eight-year-old domestic short hair. To find out more about pets needing a loving home at Thirsk, how to donate towards their care or to volunteer for Blue Cross contact the centre on 0300 777 1540, email thirsk@ bluecross.org.uk or visit www. bluecross.org.uk.

Crayke Open Gardens & Village Event Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th April 2020 To coincide with our annual flourish of thousands of golden daffodils on Church Hill, listed as a ‘must see’ display by the Dalesman, in its 2019 feature of Yorkshire’s ‘Fields of Gold’, the Village of Crayke is staging an Open Gardens & Village event between 11.00am and 5.00pm on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April 2020. (visit ‘craykepc. org.uk’ for further information) Open Gardens: there will be around a dozen entries showing a range of diverse gardens with different plants and planting styles to interest both amateur and skilled gardeners alike. These are scattered around the Village and will therefore give the visitor an insight into Crayke’s topography and history and the opportunity to visit the other displays and exhibitions. On entering the Village visitors will be directed to the Sports Club and Village Hall for safe

free parking, the purchase of Open Gardens tickets (at £5 per person – children free) and the opportunity to buy refreshments, sandwiches, cakes and plants. Whilst in the Hall please take a few moments to look at the recently discovered photographs of Crayke’s history including, for many, past family members and houses and businesses that have changed over the years. Just down the road is Crayke Primary School, which will open its own unique ‘garden’ for this event. Children are shown how to cultivate and then harvest plants that are either edible and/or aromatic and are encouraged to freely explore and experiment and safely use the tools necessary for such activities; whilst leaning about the natural world around them.
