Chopsticks Charity

Need a hedge trimming? Or maybe your grass needs cutting? Chopsticks can help! Another part of our service is our ‘Garden In The Yard’ scheme. We provide garden care maintenance for the general public with the help of our members. It’s a great opportunity for the general public to meet our members and for our members to have great a day out.

Chopsticks is a non-profit charity that caters for adults with disabilities, treating all our members as individuals with a strive to provide the best support possible; tailored to each person’s needs. We provide work opportunities to our members that can otherwise be difficult to find in a work place. We do exactly what it says in the name; our members chop, sort and carefully pack sticks for kindling to sell to YOU! All the money generated from sales of our kindling goes back into helping our Charity be sustainable. But that’s not just all we do... Our staff run ChopArts, a Monday craft class for both our members and private clients where they can be creative and form great friendships! Shortly we will be starting a glass crafts class which will give our members and clients opportunity to create personal bespoke glassware.

Carmina Burana

at the Galtres Centre, Easingwold Saturday 6th May at 7.00 pm Last Spring The Easingwold Singers very much enjoyed presenting Handel’s Messiah at the Galtres Centre, Easingwold; so much so that it was decided to hold our Spring Concert 2017 at the same venue. Therefore we are delighted to announce that on Saturday 6th May we will be presenting Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” – and if you don’t recognize the name, you will certainly recognize the music when the first chord is struck, as it has been featured in many epic films and advertisements. This very popular work by the German composer, written in 1936, is full of fun and merriment, the learning of which has certainly involved some amusing moments with the choir getting their tongues round the words and the rhythms in rehearsals. Carmina Burana means “Songs of Benediktbeuren” – a monastery in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps where in 1803, a Latin Codex of 13th Century songs was found and published under the title “Carmina Burana”. It is a selection of poems celebrating the joyousness and fun side of life and Carl Orff set these poems to music using the power of primitive rhythms and simple melodies, thus creating a work that is appealing and gets your foot tapping with a smile on your face in next to no time. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Save Your Sight Most people don’t think about their eyes much until something goes wrong.

Tickets are £10 for adults – free for children under 16 and are available from Tempo, Easingwold, Williamsons Estate Agents, Easingwold, White Rose Books, Thirsk, choir members or at the door. Further details can be found on our website: www.easingwoldsingers.co.uk or you can telephone our chairman on 01845 524 795.

It’s important to understand what happens to our eyes as we age. Your optometrist does so much more than provide spectacles. The following conditions are all detectable by optometrists during a routine eye examination. Cataracts These are caused by clouding of the lens inside the eye. They are not painful but vision may be smudged or blurry. Diabetics and those taking certain medications are more at risk, but in most cases they are caused by old age. Most cataracts may be treated successfully by surgical removal then replacing the cloudy lens with a clear, artificial one. Glaucoma This is a condition in which the optic nerve at the back of the eye is damaged. It is usually though not always, caused by raised pressure inside the eyeball. 99% of Glaucoma sufferers experience no symptoms until significant damage to their sight has occurred.

The risk becomes more significant once you are over 40 and it increases with age. Anyone with a family history of the disease is more at risk, along with diabetics, very short-sighted people and anyone from an Afro-Caribbean background. If detected early Glaucoma can be controlled with eye-drops, and in some cases surgery. Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) happens when the delicate ‘seeing-cells’ at the back of the eye stop working. It usually affects both eyes. The risk of getting it increases with age but poor diet, too much sunexposure and smoking are all contributory factors. You are also more at risk if there is a family history of the condition. There are two types: Wet AMD is rarer and can be treated if caught early, and dry AMD, which is currently untreatable. The progress of dry AMD may be slowed by increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables consumed and by stopping smoking.

Diabetes is not an eye disease but eye problems are among its most significant complications. An optometrist will check for signs that the blood vessels of the eye are leaking or not working properly. If problems are discovered then you will be referred for laser treatment at your local hospital. Even if you are not Diabetic and your eyesight seems fine it is important to have the health of your eyes checked at least once every two years, as changes may happen without you realising. Remember… Unlike teeth, eyes do not usually hurt when there is something wrong. Generally, the earlier an eye problem is detected, the easier it is to treat. If you drive, it is your responsibility to make sure you satisfy the legal visual requirements. Book an eye examination today. You have just one pair of eyes, and they have to last you a lifetime, so take care of them.

Thornton Le Street wins Heritage Lottery Fund support Thornton Le Street History Group has received £98,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Roads to the Past, which will study the history of the village and its surrounding area.

Roman or medieval in origin. Notwithstanding this the project will be a model for similar studies and create a body of committed expertise in archaeological investigation. Further details can be obtained from the village website: www. thornton-le-street.com

Led by volunteers from the local community the project will trace the history of the village from its conjectured origins in Roman times through to the present day. Thanks to National Lottery players the project will commence early in the New Year and will include extensive documentary research using local and national archives and measured survey of selected buildings and landscape features. Comprehensive training in associated techniques will be provided. The project will end in June of 2018 with the publication of professional reports and the handover of a website dedicated to the project findings. Thornton le Street is an archetypal lowland village with extensive evidence of early occupation. It contains a substantial Scheduled Monument site, a water mill, a river ford, an early church, and an adjacent landed estate. Two Roman roads are said to converge at this point and it is hoped to resolve whether the village is

Quote from our organisation: Local resident, Anne Stockdale, whose garden forms part of the Scheduled Monument site, welcomed the inauguration of the project with its ability to resolve enigmas of the past. Quote from HLF: Fiona Spiers, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund,Yorkshire and Humber, said: “This project will help open up the heritage of Thornton le Street for the local community to learn about and enjoy. Archives and archaeology will help to bring to life the stories of the local area and allow people to get involved in discovering their past.”

This Mother’s Day treat your Mum to breakfast in bed! 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4 2. Place the tomatoes and the diced muffins on a shallow baking tray. Pour over 60ml of rapeseed oil and add a pinch of black pepper 3. Place the tray into the oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the tomatoes are just tender and the muffin cubes are a light golden brown colour. Remove from the oven and set aside 4. To cook the eggs, bring a large pan of water to a rolling boil and add the white wine vinegar. Adding a dash of white wine vinegar will help the eggs stay together as they cook – a canny trick for mastering the art of egg poaching 5. Crack the eggs into separate ramekins or cups, ensuring there are no pieces of shell

6. Gently tip each egg into the water. The eggs should drop to the bottom of the saucepan and then begin to float back to the surface Older children can be trusted to plop the eggs into the water and follow the cooking instructions. Keep some spare eggs handy in case it goes wrong

Ingredients 240g of smoked salmon 200g of cherry tomatoes on the vine 80ml of rapeseed oil

7. Poach the eggs for 3–4 minutes and then remove from the water with a slotted spoon. Place the eggs on a plate with a sheet of kitchen paper to soak up excess water

4 eggs

8. Serve the eggs on a bed of smoked salmon, muffin croutons, roasted tomatoes and wild rocket. Drizzle the remaining rapeseed oil over each plate and serve

50g of rocket, washed

2 English muffins, cut into rough 1cm cubes 1 tbsp of white wine vinegar 1 pinch of black pepper

Encourage your little helpers to assemble the finished dish themselves, before plonking onto a tray and serving as breakfast in bed. Breaking the egg yolk before serving is always a nice touch
