Fresh from celebrating 15 years of The Clock this spring we have an exciting summer on the way. We will be running our annual Summer Activity Programme including a seaside trip, rocket making, graffiti art and more for our young members. Please pop in for more details and for booking forms. We are also running our ‘Improving your Prospects’ programme over the Summer Holidays aimed at helping young people aged between 16 – 19 (or up to 24 with Special Educational needs) find the next step in their career. It includes accredited training in Employability and IT Skills. Our adult support services have expanded. We are running dropins for help finding work, and also teaching basic computer skills. These operate in the Methodist Church on St James Green on Mondays between 2:30 and 4:30pm and alongside our Time for Time project on Wednesdays between 9:30am and 11:30am.

We have identified in order to improve our services we are in desperate need of more laptops. These can be hugely helpful in delivering our accredited training and also as a resource for use by our members. If you have an old windows laptop that is still in working order we would greatly appreciate any donations. Our Sundial Gardening project, thanks to funding from Tesco, has come on dramatically over Spring. However there is still much planting to be done both by our young members and adults. If you would like to participate young people can drop in during youth café between 5 and 7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Adults can volunteer between 9:30 and 11:30am on Wednesdays. If you are interested in taking part in activities, volunteering or would like support please get in touch on 01845 524 494, or you can find us behind the Methodist Church on St James Green in Thirsk.

New Gift Shop!
Vixendale Gifts is a unique new gift shop to Thirsk, having set up 2 years ago in Ripon. Its owner Cath has worked in retail for a number of years but became disillusioned with selling massproduced foreign gifts, so decided to set up her own business. With a lifelong love of animals, coupled with a desire to support British talent, she set up Vixendale Gifts. She really enjoys sourcing new products, looking for something a little different, depicting a beloved pet, wild or

a farm animal. She is the local stockist for the incredible Edge sculptures, which have to be seen to be fully appreciated. The little shop, located on Millgate is a real animal-lovers paradise, full of useful gifts for all budgets, such as kitchen textiles, mugs & cushions. She also stocks unusual greetings cards, stationery & gift wrap. New ranges are regularly introduced to keep the shop fresh & attractive & items can often be sourced for you which depict a particular animal or breed. Well behaved dogs are welcome to visit too.
Apollo Blinds comes to York and Harrogate Apollo Blinds is now open and serving homeowners in York, Harrogate and the surrounding areas. The company is backed by the world’s largest manufacturer of blinds, which is why Easingwold businessman Andrew Britton had the confidence to become part of the Apollo Blinds network because it can genuinely offer the widest collection of madeto-measure window blinds, shutters and awnings. Andrew has hit the ground running with his stunning collections of Vertical, Venetian, Roller, Roman and Roller blinds as standard. But it’s the specialist products that are really catching the eye of homeowners.
Duette® blinds He said that Duette® blinds in particular are proving popular because as well as looking fantastic, they have proven energy-saving properties that can prevent 79% of solar heat from entering the home and can also reduce heat loss by up to 46%. In winter, this could reduce heating bills by up to 12%.
Intu® blinds Then there’s the range of Intu® blinds, which are designed to fit seamlessly within the frames of most modern windows, bi-fold doors, tilt-and-turn windows and conservatories. “These are just two great examples of the collections of blinds that homeowners probably haven’t seen before, and we’re getting orders because they provide different options when it comes to shading and lighting solutions,” said Andrew. “Other solutions that homeowners may not have seen before include our Twilight collection, which is a unique duo-roller fabric system that incorporates both solid and sheer fabric panels. We are also specialists in motorised blinds, and these are becoming increasingly popular.
Plantation Shutters “But if there’s one thing above all others that we’re already known for, it’s our collection of Plantation shutters – they are just sensational
and look absolutely stunning when installed.” Apollo Blinds is part of Hunter Douglas, which means that it can offer the most comprehensive and robust manufacturer-backed guarantees in the industry. Whilst the products are the star of the show, Andrew believes that his level of customer service and the quality of installation will set his business apart. “The installation team have years of experience, so installing in a

Blooming
Baskets! It’s hanging basket season! They can be a source of delight but also a source of stress. It’s easy for a hanging basket to fail badly. Too sparsely filled and they look bedraggled. Too little water and death is swift! The secret to growing a successful basket lays both in the way it’s planted but also in sensible aftercare. Plant the basket with bedding plants ideally at the end of May and beginning of June. Then give them some shelter in a porch, or unheated greenhouse, or even under polythene at the side of the house. This allows the new plants to grow and toughen up a little before they are hung in their final position.
especially when they are wet and you really don’t want your lovingly-planted orb of flowers to be deposited unceremoniously all over the floor! Planting is easiest if you balance the basket on a large flowerpot or bucket. Fibrous liners help to retain water and look nicer than polythene. For extra moisture retention place a circle of polythene in the base of the basket before filling with soil. The best planting medium is soilless multi-purpose compost, mixed with water-retaining granules. Place a layer of compost in the base of the basket and push the first layer of plants through. Trailing plants such as lobelia, bidens and ivy-leafed pelargoniums look lovely but you can be as creative as you like. Water the plants in their containers

up layers of plants and soil. When it’s full to within 3 cm of the rim you can plant up the top with more upright, compact bushy plants like begonias, petunias and pelargoniums. Make sure your basket never dries out. It will be reliant on you for all water and nutrition. If you water it at least once a day and feed with dilute tomato fertilizer once a week I promise it will be blooming basket in the best possible way. Happy gardening By Rachael Leverton

Blue Cross Thirsk
Annual Summer Open Day Join Blue Cross for their annual open day and fun dog show fundraiser on Sunday 13th August at Thirsk Farmers Auction Mart, Thirsk Rural Business Centre, Blakey Lane. Gates open at 11.00am and entrance is £1 for adults and 50p for children and concessions. All funds raised on the day will go towards the care of homeless dogs and cats staying at the charity’s animal rehoming centre in Topcliffe. Activities include craft fair, refreshments and family fun. There will also be the popular dog show, all dogs are welcome to enter at £1 per class. Is your dog the fastest sausage eater? Has he got the waggiest tail? Are you the owner that most looks like their dog? Classes open to all ages of owner and fancy dress is encouraged!
Things to think about before taking on a pet Pets are incredibly rewarding and play a huge part in our lives. However, before taking on a pet always do some research and think about the amount of time, cost and things like what you will do when you are on holiday. Sadly,
some pets arrive at Blue Cross because owners simply hadn’t realised the commitment, time and cost pet ownership involves. It is also vital when getting a pet to investigate the breed – what was the dog bred to do and can you recreate that activity in the home, some dogs need more mental stimulation than others and breeds of cats also have different behaviours, some are prone to be noisier than others for example. We would always urge anyone thinking of getting a pet to get in touch with us here at the centre. Our kennels are closed because we match pets on a case by case basis depending on their needs and a potential owner’s lifestyle. The dogs can get really stressed out in kennels so we do everything we can to prevent this and make their time with us as relaxed as possible. Our pets also go to new homes already microchipped, neutered and vaccinated and all come with lifetime of support from our animal behaviourists. We rehome to absolutely anyone so don’t be put off if you have children or are elderly – we believe there is a match for everyone.
So once you are sure a pet will fit happily into your family and lifestyle have a look at our website and see all the different pets available from the local centre. Your local Blue Cross is on Station Road, Topcliffe, YO7 3SE, 0300 777 1540. All pets at the centre are featured on the Blue Cross website ww.bluecross.org.uk or why not join us on Facebook?
