Spring Roundup
MP Visits The Clock The Clock invited Kevin Hollinrake MP in April to see the wide variety of support The Clock offers to young people not just in Thirsk but throughout North Yorkshire. He saw a range of activities that demonstrate the variety of support we offer including the Little Hands Youth Club for year groups 5 and 6, and intensive one to one support we offer to vulnerable young people. Other projects seen by Mr Hollinrake included seeing furniture that has been kindly donated by the community and then given out to young people who are moving into new homes. He also saw our food bank which is in partnership with Hambleton FoodShare. Andy Butcher who heads our Enhancement team also showed how he can deliver first aid training to partner agencies. Mr Hollinrake said of The Clock, which he supports as a trustee, “The Clock is a marvellous organisation that helps a lot of young people and adults at times of difficulty and disadvantage. We all go through difficult times in our lives and The Clock provides an invaluable service in helping people get back on their feet, providing advice and guidance and developing life and workplace skills. I am always impressed by the range of activities on offer and by the huge geographical coverage of the take up of their services. The Clock is an absolute credit to the town and the enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment of the team is wonderful to see.” Abigail Homer, CEO of The Clock said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to show Kevin Hollinrake some new services which have started since the last time he visited such as the Youth Clubs for the younger age range which Broadacres kindly funds.” An example of a young person who The Clock has supported is Ben Smith who won the Hambleton Young Citizen of the Year Award. He met and talked to the MP about the support he received from the Clock which includes providing support while at School, and how he volunteers and helped run The Clock’s Summer Activity programme last year. One of the new exciting projects is Boxercise funded by North Yorkshire Sport and is a fitness class for girls which aims to empower and boost their self-confidence. This runs every week and girls from year 7 and above are all welcome. Mr Hollinrake also saw Time for Time in action, our project aimed at supporting adults who are affected by rural isolation. This has been running for over a year now and has not just provided a social space for people who do not have any others but has supported people with employment, making sure their house is heated properly and many other issues.

Do you have a couple of hours spare to help your local community? We have created a fund-raising pack for people who would like to raise us money. The pack contains suggestions of fundraisers and helpful information about The Clock. If you would like to support us please contact Oliver@theclock.org.
Boxercise We are really pleased that our pilot project of Girl’s Boxercise was such a success that North Yorkshire Sport have decided to fund it for a full year. It runs on Tuesday evenings between 5:30pm and 6:15pm. This is a healthy and fun activity that boosts the confidence of the girls who take part. If anyone is interested please pop in and have a go, each session costs 50p and takes place in the Methodist Church on St James Green.
Youth Club Funding Success Thanks to the staff at Broadacres Housing Association the three youth clubs we run for the younger age range will continue for a further year. The youth clubs run in Thirsk, Stokesley and Northallerton, contact Adam@theclock.org for more details. The youth clubs would like donations of board games, sports equipment and any arts and crafts materials.
Time For Time Numbers participating in Time for Time, our adult service, continue to grow. The Clock’s staff offer support and social activities to adults in Thirsk and district. Contact Kirsty@theclock for more details or call in on a Wednesday between 10am and 1pm.
Summer Programme We will be running summer activities again this year for 12-19 year olds, if you are interested please keep an eye on our website at www. theclock.org which will be updated as soon as the programme is finalised.
Coffee Mornings And finally if you would like to find out more about us please come and visit us on one of our community coffee mornings. They take place on the last Friday of every month except August between 10:30am and 11:30am in the Methodist Church on St James Green.

2 Fantastic Fundraising Stories! Bright & beautiful art benefits scanner appeal THANKS to a local Northallerton art group, the Friarage Hospital’s MRI scanner appeal has received a £700 windfall. The Tuesday Art Group regularly get together at Romanby Womens Institute to practice art. Their weekly sessions are a social and learning occasion and they support and encourage their love of art and work on producing artwork in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The amateur artists enjoy demos from artists and help each other in developing their creativity and imagination through their painting. An exhibition of their artwork with a flora and
fauna theme helped to raise this fantastic amount thanks to everyone who attended to view the scenic work. A raffle at the event and donations from the group’s generous members boosted the total. Art group chairman, Mrs Paula Robinson from Romanby, said: “We all really enjoyed producing the artwork for our exhibition and everyone worked really hard to produce the lovely art on show. “We chose the Friarage as it is our local hospital, a cause close to all our hearts and one which we all might need at some time.”
is a pleasure to see and we are very grateful to the group’s members for the generous donation for the scanner appeal.” A MRI scanner for the Friarage will have huge benefits for people living in and around Northallerton and will be a valuable resource for medical teams and a welcome addition to the diagnostic services currently available at the Northallerton hospital. The Fabulous World of Nail Art People have been painting their nails for thousands of years.
white, or go for a more detailed design, such as zebra print.
A decade ago one could only choose between a coloured polish or a French manicure. But recently nail art has taken off, with elaborate designs featuring everything from geometric patterns to miniature landscapes. Nail art ranges from simple stripes, to incredibly intricate creations, some of which can take hours to produce.
Flags - Many countries’ flags are quite simple to recreate. You could paint each nail with the same flag, or go for a full United Nations range of designs. Flags are ideal for celebrating sporting events, such as Euro 2016 or Rugby Union.
For the fancier designs and best results, visit a nail salon. There are plenty of stand-alone salons across the country, as well as smaller nail bars in spas, department stores and beauty salons. If you have time, patience and a steady hand however, you could try the following designs at home, particularly if you have a willing friend to help out… Monochrome - Try painting half a nail black, and the other half
10

Polka dot - Paint each nail with a base colour and allow to dry before dotting on different colours. Stripes - Fun for summer, stripes can conjure up images of seaside deckchairs or Breton t-shirts. Stripes across the nail can be slightly harder to get right, so you may prefer to work from the nail bed to the tip. All that glitters - This look is easy to create, but effective. Paint your nails with a high shine metallic polish, such as Nars’ in Milos Rich
Gold. While wet, sprinkle over some fine glitter. Alternatively, choose a polish which already has added sparkle, such as L’Oreal’s Color Riche Gold Dust. Ombre - With this look you want to create a gradient of colour. Start by painting the lightest shade onto your nail and leaving it to dry. Then paint a band of the light shade onto a flat glass surface, and a darker shade above it. Altogether, the painted area on the glass should be just longer than your nail. Mix the shades together slightly where they meet. Lightly press a makeup sponge into the polish, then roll it onto your nail. Embellishments - Stick on nail gems are easy to apply, although they don’t tend to last very long! Try a line along the cuticle, or one

small gem on each nail. For best results, allow plenty of time for each colour to dry, before applying the next shade, to avoid smudging. You may also want to add a clear top coat, to help your creation last longer. Have fun! Kate Duggan

National Picnic Week 11-19 June is National Picnic Week: a celebration of picnicking that’s been happening in the UK for over a decade.
Some see picnics as a romantic affair to be shared with a loved one, fine foods and a bottle of champagne. For others it’s an inexpensive family day out and often a reminder of childhood days. Or it could be a chance to spend time with friends, choosing to meet at a given location and each bringing along their favourite food and drinks to share.
For many people a picnic consists of traditional items such as sandwiches, crisps, boiled eggs and cakes or fruit. Research shows however that Mediterranean options such as deli-style meats, olives, humus and crackers are also now commonly included and some choose to create items from special picnic recipe books.
You can find recommendations for places to enjoy your picnic on the National Picnic Week website: www.nationalpicnicweek.co.uk or you could try asking friends for their preferences.
One of the tricks of picnicking successfully is packaging items correctly to ensure food is not squashed beyond recognition and drinks don’t leak. Carrying your picnic on a bike ride can create extra difficulties but add to the fun. Utilise specialist plastic containers,
cling film, foil and sandwich bags, or buy items pre-packed. You could even splash out on a traditional picnic hamper. You can now buy a wide range of stylish brightly coloured plastic plates, cutlery and cups to enhance your experience. It’s a good idea to remember to take napkins or kitchen roll and some wet wipes, as eating a picnic can get a little messy, particularly if you are sat
o n a picnic rug rather than at a table. Do take some bags for your rubbish too; never leave litter behind. By Susan Brookes-Morris
Caponata Picnic Sandwiches Method 1) Heat the oil in a heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add the celery and saute until crisp-tender, about 2 minutes. Add the aubergine and saute until beginning to soften, about 2 minutes. Season with salt. 2) Add the red pepper and cook until crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Add the onion and saute until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the diced tomatoes with their juices, sultanas and oregano. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. 3) Simmer over medium-low heat until the flavours blend and the mixture thickens, stirring often, about 20
minutes. Add the vinegar, sugar and capers. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. 4) Cut the bread pieces horizontally in half. Griddle the bread cut-side down on a griddle pan over medium-high heat until golden, about 2 minutes. Rub the whole garlic cloves over the toasted side of the bread. Add a slice of mozzarella to the bread bottom, spoon the caponata on top, cover with the other bread half and serve. To take for a picnic: Wrap the sandwiches separately in cling film or parchment paper. Chill until ready to serve, or keep at room temperature for up to 1 hour.

Messiah: The Easingwold Singers Saturday 7th May 2016 at the Galtres Centre
Oh what a night!
North Yorkshire Music & Arts Events Diary
It can safely be said that the concert on Saturday 7th May, when The Easingwold Singers, The Ampleforth Chamber Orchestra and exceptional soloists (Paula Berger – Soprano, Kate Morgan – Alto, David Pisaro – Tenor and Sam Hucklebridge – Bass) all came together to perform in what was a truly “Wonderful” if not “Glorious” evening in the true spirit of Handel’s Messiah; an experience enjoyed by all. We had the pleasure of a sizeable audience, who told us it was a most enjoyable concert. We were praised on the balance between orchestra and choir, resulting in an outstanding performance. We can’t thank our Musical Director, Sarah Reece, enough for her expertise and guidance. As always she brought it all together in a professional and pleasurable manner, smiling at us all from start to finish and giving us the confidence to perform. Also thanks must be given to Polly Crook, our Chairman who has taken on a multitude of tasks steering us through all the organisation aspects of staging a concert as logistically challenging as Handel’s Messiah. This is greatly appreciated by all members of the Choir and the Committee. To round the season off many of us enjoyed a splendid social evening and dinner at the Oak Tree in Helperby, one of our favourite venues. The Annual Dinner has become established as a firm favourite in our calendar. Now it is time for a rest and to enjoy what we hope is a pleasant summer before we recommence rehearsals for our Christmas Concert.

Looking forward, our next performance will be held at St John and All Saints Church, Easingwold on Saturday 10th December when we will be singing Schubert’s Mass in G, together with a selection of Advent and Christmas music. It seems strange mentioning Christmas when it seems so far away and yet the months of January through to April have passed so quickly that it is important to plan ahead.

GARDEN VIEW
Hanging Baskets Whether planted for summer or winter interest, hanging baskets provide valuable colour at eye level. Choose vibrant bedding plants for a short-term show or herbs, shrubs and evergreens for a longlasting display.
When to plant a hanging basket Plant summer hanging baskets from April onwards, but they will need protection from frost until the middle or end of May. If you do not have a greenhouse, it is usually easier to plant in situ once the frosts have passed. Plant winter hanging baskets between September and October, and it doesn’t matter if they are frosted as the plants are should be hardy. You would normally plant up a longlasting perennial hanging basket from April onwards, depending on the types of plants being used.
How to plant a hanging basket The basic principals of creating a hanging basket for winter and summer are the same.
Lining First of all, if you are using a standard wire basket, it will need to be lined. You can buy readymade cardboard liners and fibrous materials sold for the purpose, but a thrifty option is to collect moss from the lawn. Aim to cover the inside with about a 1.5cm (½in) thick layer of the material and

then half fill the basket with compost.
Compost A multipurpose is fine for a display that only has to last for one year, but John Innes No 2 is better for a longer-lasting arrangement. And if you want to grow plants such as winter flowering heathers, it is best to go for ericaeous compost, although Erica carnea and E. × darleyensis cultivars are tolerant of other composts that contain lime. Also consider using water-retaining granules to help reduce the chore of watering.
Choosing and arranging the plants When you begin to arrange the plants in the basket, it is usually easiest to start with one, central plant. This can be used to create structure and impact, which is particularly important in winter if its other companions fail to flower in cold snaps Around this, position some trailing plants to cover the sides of the basket, particularly if it is made from wire. However, using a more decorative basket is best where it will be easily seen Along with this selection, it is worth considering carefully the flowering plants. Choose colours that work
well together and plants that flower reliably. For example, winterflowering pansies, petunias, lobelia and geraniums are always winners
Finishing touches Once all the plants are in, fill around the rootballs carefully with more compost, firming gently. You can push in some controlled-release fertiliser pellets or plugs at this stage, and then water well.
Aftercare Once the basket is planted, what else is needed? Check baskets every day in summer, watering always unless the compost is wet. Drying out is an increasing risk as the plants grow and days remain warm Although baskets don’t dry out as quickly in winter, they still need regular checking. Aim to keep the compost moist but not soggy, and avoid wetting the foliage and flowers In spring, summer and early autumn (April to September), apply a liquid fertiliser Deadhead regularly to prevent the plants’ energy going into seed production, rather than more flowers

Problems Hanging baskets rely most on the gardener to ensure they don’t dry out. However, poor flowering can be remedied by trying the following: Ensure the baskets stays moist but not soggy. Feed once a week with a liquid fertiliser. Winter hanging baskets do greatly benefit from a sheltered, sunny spot. If the position is exposed, consider giving the basket some protection in the coldest weather. Use either a layer of fleece, or sit the basket on a bucket in a cool greenhouse for just the worst days. Watch out for common pests such as aphids, slugs, snails and vine weevil. Diseases that may be troublesome include powdery mildew, pelargonium rust, fuchsia rust and impatiens downy mildew.

Beware Cold Callers! Unfortunately some large, reputable businesses are attracting the unwanted attention of scammers and cowboy builders who are cold calling and knocking on the doors of innocent people, pretending to be from well known companies working in the area. They apply pressure sales and bully tactics to get people to hand money over for substandard work, or in some cases work that does not even get done! Resin Drives, a reputable national driveway company have fallen victim to this scam and have a few words of advice for innocent consumers to ensure they and their money stay safe:
Reputable companies will never knock on your door touting for business. Always ask for identification which is provided by reputable companies whenever their employees are visiting a customer. Do background checks and make sure the company they say they are from has sent them.
Check companies out on Trust Pilot Never hand over cash or any kind of payment to any work person unless you have contacted them directly and employed their services yourself. Resin Drives spokesperson has the final word, “Resin Drives would never cold call or knock on your door, we advertise nationally and all of our customers contact us direct from the advertising we do, or through word of mouth referrals. It concerns us greatly that people are being conned by these disreputable people. Follow our check list and you will not fall foul of this scam.
