Summer @ The Clock Prime-Time

Prime-Time, our low intensity sports programme for adults has proven such a success we are expanding it to a second session. Low intensity sports includes a range of fun and competitive activities and games such as Boccia and Indoor Curling suitable for all ability levels. There is the opportunity to make new acquaintances in a safe friendly atmosphere. Pop along on Wednesday afternoons between 3 and 4:30pm or Thursday mornings between 9:30 till 11:15pm in The Methodist Church on St James Green. We have participants from a wide range of ages from teenagers to pensioners. Each session is 50p and there are refreshments available.

Andy Powell (with pool cue) and Abigail Homer (third from the right) with staff from Broadacres and The Clock and children who attend the Little Hands youth club in Thirsk.

Prime-Time is run in partnership with Hambleton District Council with funding secured by First North Yorkshire from the MOD Convent Fund. The aim is to reduce social isolation and loneliness with a special focus on veterans. If you are interested in taking part please get in touch!

Everyone is free to attend, the Youth Café is an inclusive, safe environment to meet friends, use our X-box, Pool table, computers or board games.

Skate Park

The Clock has taken ownership of the Sowerby Community Skate Park, but we need your help making sure it is opened and shut daily. If you are 18+ and would like to volunteer or help out in any way please get in touch!

Youth Clubs

Three popular North Yorkshire youth clubs, including Little Hands in Thirsk, will run for at least three more years after a housing association extended funding for them. Broadacres has traditionally funded the youth clubs in Northallerton, Thirsk and Stokesley on a year-by-year basis. But after entering into a successful partnership with The Clock - an independent charitable organisation which delivers services to young people and adults across North Yorkshire - to coordinate the clubs, the association has now gone a step further and guaranteed funding until at least 2021. Little Hands is for years 5 and 6 and runs every Wednesday in the Methodist Church on St James green between 5pm and 7pm. To find out more email Jackie@theclock.org or ring us on 01845 524 494.

Gardening Project

We are hoping to get our allotment project back up and running with a little help. For all those interested in helping please drop in on Thursdays between 2:30 – 4pm. Please get in touch if you are interested!

Youth Café

We are running activities in our Youth Café on Wednesday evenings for young people aged 11-19 (Year 7+). Every week we will have something fun on that may be artistic, competitive and with the opportunity to learn skills. We will be making Mosaic Plant Pots on 13th June, Rock Painting on 20th June and learning Book Binding on 27th June.

Local Trio to complete Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge for Childrens Cancer Charity Simon, Steven & Dwight vs The Yorkshire 3 Peaks

The walk

Three local men from Northallerton, Dwight Scaife, Simon Wilson and Steven Hermon, will be attempting the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday 21st July 2018 in aid of childrens cancer charity, Henry Dancer Days. The Challenge is a 24 mile circular walk that climbs the tallest mountains of Yorkshire.

How you can help...

Help us to raise as much money as we can for our chosen charities by making a donation to any of the fundraisers in our team. Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for the fantastic Henry Dancer Days. HDD is a charity which raises funds to help children with cancer and support their families particularly those undergoing treatment for primary bone cancer. They also support projects in paediatric oncology wards in the NE of England. Every penny that HDD raise is put to good use. A guide to where your donation will go is shown below. £5 pays for a book for a child in the Storyteller project

• Whernside • Ingleborough • Pen-y-Ghent. The trio will begin their challenge in the early morning starting at Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Pen-y-Ghent is the first peak to be ascended followed by Whernside and then Ingleborough and back to the starting point, all within the 12 hours.

£50 pays for a distraction session in the kids oncology ward. £500 pays for a full grant to a family who have a child with cancer For further information please see the charity details opposite and link on this page which details the unbelievable work that HDD do including the Storyteller project, the 340+ grants they have already provided and other unmeasurable support. Childhood cancer is something we hope that no family has to face. Whatever you can spare we truly value the support. Thanks Simon, Steven & Dwight

The charity Henry Dancer Days supports children and young people with cancer. The charity was set up in memory of Henry John Dancer, who died in 2010 from Osteosarcoma, aged just 12. Henry’s Mum, Jane, founded the charity in 2012 to support children and young people with primary bone cancer. We provide grants to the families of children undergoing treatment for primary bone cancer, a rare type of cancer which can lead to

unimaginable difficulties. Our grants provide practical support when it is most needed, with additional support given to those in palliative care. We also run the hugely successful Storytelling Project at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary. Our magical Storyteller helps children with cancer escape their troubles and enter a world of pure imagination! Registered Charity Number: 1147982

King Richard III A Yorkshire Celebration for a Yorkshire King

and each July celebrates the anniversary of his coronation.

Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th July 2018 You may well recall hearing about the finding of the remains of King Richard III in Leicester and his re-burial in Leicester cathedral. But did you know that this son of a Duke of York spent years of his childhood here in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire at Middleham Castle? This was where he met his future wife and queen, the Lady Anne Neville and it is also where his only son, Edward of Middleham, was born and died. The community of Middleham is understandably proud of their towns association with this famous and controversial King

We invite you to come and join us for a weekend of revelry, re-enactments, drama and enlightening talks. Visit our market stalls in the historic town market place and around the castle. Listen and join in with our wandering musicians, Haut Bois, as they play for you. On Saturday a falconer will demonstrate this sport of Mediaeval Kings and later that afternoon there will be a short service in the church of St Marys and St Alkelda’s where the devout King Richard III himself once worshipped. Friday evening, 6th July, sees a Mediaeval themed Banquet with music and revelry, followed by the lighting of the beacon on Middleham Castle

tower. Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon have a programme of talks and presentations by authors, experts on how the King would have spoken and Mediaeval language, the Kings wider family of York and Philippa Langley herself -the woman who led the successful hunt to find King Richard. Here is a festival where you are welcome to come in period costume and really join in with the atmosphere. Mike has performed for many top clients, and has also performed for the likes of Coldplay, Mel C and Edith Bowman, but singing with Robbie Williams himself at his Swings Both Ways concert at Leeds First Direct Arena in June 2014 is the highlight of Mike’s career. n 6th July - 7.30pm Meet Tommy Atkins On August 4th 1914, with the declaration of war between Britain and Germany, reservist Tommy Atkins is immediately called up to serve his country. Within weeks he sees his first action in the fields of France and subsequently experiences the full scale of life in the Western Front trenches of the First World War - the horror, the pain, the misery, the boredom and even the moments of joy. This brand new play written by playwright/actor Peter Gill (Talbot House, The Jerry Lee Lewis Story) details, through the eyes of a simple ‘Tommy’ the reality of war for those who actually fought it. In an astonishing solo performance, ‘Meet Tommy Atkins’ takes the audience through his war - a war that saw him fight at Ypres, Passendale, Loos and on the Somme and that took him to the depths of despair but also brought him unique comradeship that he would never find again. From the beginning of the war to the end, Private Tommy Atkins was there. This is his story. ‘compelling, moving, insightful and believable .... beautifully written and performed’. National Volunteers’ Week 1st – 7th June

This year, Volunteers’ Week is about volunteering for all – celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways. Could you volunteer, and why should you bother? Studies have found that taking time out to help others reduces stress levels, improves immunity and increases life-satisfaction.

For advertising contact Christine: 01609 777401 or Dwight: 01609 779097 | www.jkanorth.com

This is because helping someone else interrupts tension-producing patterns and replaces it with a sense of purpose, which leads positive emotions. Volunteering can shake you out of old routines and help you figure out where you want to head next. You might come up with ideas on how to improve your own community, or even discover a new life calling. By Sarah Davey
