Update from Community Works Food Bank Donations Community Works has been witnessing first-hand the effects of the cost of living crisis on families in the Thirsk area.
to access our support services if needed.
We have seen a substantial increase in demand for food parcels to our food bank this spring and we are anticipating this will continue through the summer. The increased costs have likely also impacted how many donations people are able to make.
You can drop food donations at any of our offices including the Clock Works Re-Use store in town or our office on St James Green. We also have a collection point in the black bin at the back of Tesco. There are also collection points at Hambleton Grange and at The Milk Churn Farm Shop in Topcliffe. If you are local business or community organisation and would like to collect food for us please get in touch.
The food bank as such is running very short in all areas currently. Any and all donations would be hugely appreciated. Anything that would help people struggling to cope with their groceries would be hugely appreciated. We make sure that anyone receiving a food parcel from us is also able

Spring Your Way into Summer While the change of season might put a spring in some people’s step, for others the milder weather and the impending arrival of summer can create a host of conflicting feelings, especially if you’re facing yet another summer not at the weight you want to be. The reason that so many ‘ordinary’ diets fail is because they don’t tackle the reasons behind why people overeat in the first place. They suggest the answers are in the food and focus on calories and complex food-plans. LighterLife offers a weight management plan to suit your weight loss needs that doesn’t just include meal replacement products but access to our unique behaviour change programme. With LighterLife you can lose a stone a month, every month so if you start your LighterLife adventure today you could lose a stone in time for the Summer Holiday! LighterLife combines a choice of plans for fast weight loss and groups to help you understand far more about your relationship with both you – and the food. We’ve a range of plans depending on how quickly you want to lose weight, all leading to personalised Management plans with will help you achieve a healthy and balanced way of eating for life with healthy recipes and ongoing group support. Pet charity Blue Cross warns of weather dangers as temperatures soar Blue Cross is warning owners of the dangers of pets in the heat and is offering advice to keep pets safe in the sun this summer.
strongest. You can also apply a non-toxic human sunscreen or one specifically for pets to vulnerable areas like ears and noses.
Many owners don’t realise hot tarmac can easily burn their pet’s paws. A simple test to check if the tarmac is too hot to walk your dog is to take your own shoes off and stand on the path. If you are unable to keep your feet on the path for five seconds, then it is not safe to walk your dog.
• Pets with thick fur will need regular grooming to prevent them overheating. Seek advice from a professional groomer.
Blue Cross top summer tips: • Walk your dog during cooler times of day and avoid strenuous games.
• Make ice cubes with your pet’s favourite treat inside.
• Make sure your pet has access to clean water at all times, ideally in a large bowl filled to the brim. Older animals, particularly cats, are vulnerable to dehydration. • As a general rule, if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pooch’s paws. • Light-coloured dogs and cats can get sunburnt which can lead to skin cancer. Keep sunbathing pets indoors when the sun is

• For small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs, make sure their hutches and runs are in shady areas and make sure they are clean at all times with water topped up.
• Have a paddling pool with cool water in the garden for dogs to play in. • If you suspect your animal is suffering from heatstroke, remove them to a cool place, dampen their coat with tepid water on a towel and contact a vet immediately. Avoid overcooling, especially small pets. For more advice visit www. bluecross.org.uk/summer
