Tough Times For Farmers Holidaymakers are not the only people who have been affected by our dismal wet summer. The wet weather has also caused problems for many farmers. And the rain and lack of sunshine has meant that crops have yielded badly with the heavy ground meaning that the harvest has come late. The continuing wet weather has also meant that farmers are having problems and delays in planting the crops for next year’s harvest and so at present the problems are ongoing.
At times like this farmers need to make sure that they make all claims for allowances that they can especially as they will have a tax bill to pay on the previous year’s harvest when yields were good. To help them with this they need to think about the following.
Farmers’ averaging Where a current year’s profits are less than 75% of the previous year’s result then the 2 years can be averaged. This could mean that if personal allowances are not being used in the current year then profits are brought forward to cover them or if in the previous year there was higher rate tax to pay then a tax claim can be made if you are only a basic rate tax payer in the current year.
Losses And losses aren’t all bad news as it may be possible to set that loss back against the previous year’s results. Again this can result in a tax refund if you paid tax in that year. Or else the losses will be carried forward against profits in future years when they occur.
Machinery The government has taken away a large benefit by reducing the Annual Investment Allowance from For advertising contact Christine on: 01609 777401 | www.jkanorth.com

£100,000 to £25,000. However, if you are able to maximise the expenditure in the current year it may mean that you turn a small profit into a loss and
if you do you can claim the benefits from losses above. It does help to have a regular program of machinery replacement even when times are difficult.
Buildings Unfortunately there are no tax allowances for agricultural buildings, which always seem harsh when farmers are so dependent on them. However a careful check of expenditure can sometimes yield a benefit. “Integral features” of buildings have their own special allowances and the equipment which is put into a building can also be claimed upon. So a detailed analysis can sometimes reveal allowable expenditure on a building. As you can see that although times are hard there are still some areas whereby claims and reliefs can be obtained and as a farmer said to me recently, it always helps to get a little bit of tax back from the tax man!

The skies the limit for PWM! PWM Platforms has been trading for 5 years providing access solutions for local companies, tradesmen and individuals to work at height using specialist lightweight, all terrain access platforms. Owner Paul Middlemiss tells us more, “We are slightly different from most hire companies in that we do a lot of on site work both direct with customers and assisting tradesmen and are regularly on site operating the platforms. We will work as flexibly as possible to suit people’s requirements. We are fully insured to assist on site in the form the task requires and where a specific tradesman is needed we can recommend specialists who are competent operators themselves. We have built up to a wide range of machines that are specifically designed to tackle the needs of all types of sites from large historic buildings and church spires to shopping centre’s and other indoor work. The working range of our platforms is upto 23 metres! Our machines are lightweight with narrow access, all terrain capabilities and they operate on fuel and electric for indoor applications.

We have recently moved to a commercial unit on the edge of Boroughbridge and with working at height getting harder all the time for companies, we can now offer full training courses for operators of access equipment so they are fully certified to undertake their work safely. We hope to continue to work as closely and as flexibly as possible with local customers to continue onwards and widen our range of machines and workload.” For more information please call Paul on: 01423 322922 / 07734 162885

Christmas Garden The more you can pick from your garden, collect in a wood or harvest from the hedgerow to decorate your house at Christmas the better. You’ll save yourself a fortune - and, what’s more, it is ultra-fashionable. Craft is all the rage and air (or even road) miles are to be avoided, while foraging for organic material to transform into glamorous decorations is the last word in chic. But what you don’t want to end up with is a large, dried flower-and-grass arrangement, reminiscent of a pub fireplace in summer. To keep the glamour factor high, the less you mix things up the better. Arrange each seed pod, vegetable, or fruit on its own, in an identical group or in pairs. Avoid having a mix of lots of different things - too itsy-bitsy and lacking in style. • Garden seed heads Among my favourite garden-harvested Christmas decorations are allium seed heads that have been sprayed crimson or silver. Their structure is complex yet simple: a ray of narrow stems, each ending in a flower and seed head. This combination creates a good silhouette. The football-sized Allium schubertii are the best. You can store these from one year to the next - the paint makes them less fragile - and there is no better star for the top of your tree. Also try the slightly smaller varieties, A. cristophii and ‘Purple Sensation’. If your alliums are already shot, go looking for agapanthus to spray. They work just as well. • Globe artichokes Weighty, chunky globe artichokes are ideal for spray-painting. The paint highlights every wrinkle and ridge and makes them look as if they’ve been cast in silver. You’ll want to pick them up and weigh them in your hand to see if they’re real. If possible, buy your artichokes when they’re still around in the summer and autumn or, better still, pick them from your garden. Cardoon flower buds will work just as well. Both should be harvested before they get too blown apart by wind and rain. It doesn’t matter if they’re going brown - you’ll cover them with spray - but make sure they are not too ragged. Cut them with a length of stem and a leaf or two.
20 Thirsk & Easingwold infocus
Please mention “infocus” when contacting any of our advertisers
The leaves add a good twist and turn, and provide contrast to the chunky stem. Try to find artichokes or flower buds in different shapes and sizes as this will give your final arrangement more interesting forms and outlines. Once picked, leave them somewhere airy and cool (not in a damp shed), so they dry out rather than going mouldy. They can be sprayed after a few days. The best colour for artichokes is definitely silver. Scatter them over your Christmas table, or along the length of a mantelpiece or window ledge, or arrange them in a large bowl interspersed with brilliant coloured Christmas baubles. • Chinese lantern chains For colour, think of growing and collecting brilliant orange Chinese lanterns to combine with fuchsia-pink spindle berries, picked from the hedgerow. Bright pink and orange are one of my favourite colour combinations and these foraged seed pods work well together threaded in a chain. Segment the Chinese lantern stems so that you have one lantern and a bit of stem in each. Then thread these sections on to a length of reel wire. As the stems are almost hollow, this is easy to do. Leave a gap between each lantern and wire the spindle into these. Then brighten and tidy the whole thing by winding ribbon along the length of the chain. • Cranberry and quail egg chains The deep rich crimson of cranberry chains is very Christmassy - and they last for more than a week. Aiming right through the middle of the berry, thread the cranberries like beads on to 45cm (18in) lengths of reel wire. Leave a bit of spare wire at each end and then join as many lengths together as you need.

Time For Change There are quite a lot of changes afoot in the world of financial planning, specifically around investment and pension advice. • From the beginning of 2013, the level of qualifications required to give financial advice will be higher • Commission payments from a provider to the adviser will no longer be allowed • Advice can be fully independent or restricted These will be important changes for people seeking financial advice. Here’s why:
Qualifications
It’s important that when you seek advice the person giving that advice has good technical qualifications to support you to make the right decision at important times in your life. From January, advisers will have to reach a higher level of qualification and have a Statement of Professional Standing to be able to give financial advice. As a result of this, there is likely to be around 10-15% of advisers choosing to retire from the industry. If your adviser retires, it’s important to understand the service that you will be getting in future and how much this will cost you. There is a clear need for ongoing advice but this has to be right for you.
Adviser charging
Rather than advisers being paid commission, the fee for financial advice will need to be agreed between the client and the adviser in advance. This should lead to the costs of advice being more transparent. In research, the cost of financial advice is sometimes considered to be free but in reality like most things in life there is a price to pay. The level of fee should be clear and appropriate for the work being done. The fee can take various forms: - Hourly rate, Fixed fee or a percentage of the amount being invested My preferred method is a fixed fee based on the work being undertaken which has the advantage of being clear to both parties. Note it will still be possible for the payment to be made by the product provider and there can be tax benefits in doing it this way.
independent or restricted
Independent advice means considering the whole market. Going forwards this is expanded to include a slightly broader range of investments. An independent adviser will need to consider all of the financial products available in addressing a client’s financial requirements. By contrast restricted advice, can be based on a smaller range of investments. I will be remaining independent as I believe that it is better to have all the options available when giving advice.
I believe these are positive changes which over time should result in better advice being given at the right price. If you are seeking or getting advice here are some things to think about:
1 Understand what service you will receive and how much it will cost you. This applies to both the initial advice you receive and where appropriate the ongoing advice. 2 If you already have an adviser are they receiving an ongoing payment? If so what service are you getting for this? From my point of view, I’m looking forward to 2013 and I’m in shape for the new world: I have qualifications at the level above those required from 2013 and in addition I am a qualified actuary which gives me a very strong technical background. I am already fee based and will offer clients fixed fees for initial advice and fees based on funds for ongoing advice. I will continue to offer independent advice. Please give me a call if you would like to discuss your financial needs. For advertising contact Christine on: 01609 777401 | www.jkanorth.com

Peace of Mind…whatever the weather!
THE worst September rainfall figures for more than 30 years have brought misery and mess to many people. Incessant rain falling with such ferocity and for long periods of time may have caused damage to your flat roof in your home or business. If you have suffered or are concerned that you may have experienced damage then please give locally operated Flat Roof Company a call on Freephone 0800 212548. “Over 25 years, we have built up expertise and a reputation for quality work and material,” said director Kevin Moody. “We are here to stay and that gives our customers continuity and peace of mind. They know we will be here to help and deal with any problems in the future. Some companies in this business do a job, offer a 25-year guarantee and then go bust the following year, leaving a worthless warranty. Our 25-year warranty is insurance-backed, so will be honoured no matter what”. The Flat Roof Company has just reached another major milestone – having fitted more than 35,000 roofs, whether on homes, schools or commercial premises around Yorkshire. This company has succeeded, where others have failed, using topquality materials. Traditional flat roof materials, many laid in narrow strips, have consistently failed to provide the longevity and performance sought by home and property owners. Customers now

efficient insulating material into its new, or repaired flat roofs, since the Government introduced minimum insulation levels into building regulations. The appropriately named “warm roof” is a foil-backed insulating board up to ten times more efficient than the fibre-glass quilting normally stuff between joints. Up to 30% of heat can be lost through a flat roof, but the “warm roof” reduces that loss to under 5%, an obvious saving on heating bills.
Tuffdek is a reinforced polyester laminate laid in situ on your flat or gently-sloping roof, forming a tough, single and totally jointless laminated membrane. It is fully bonded to a quality plywood decking and is available in a range of colours and finishes. The effect is that your roof is now effectively totally encapsulated, offering you peace of mind whatever the weather. As there are no joints whatsoever in the laminate, the chances of future leaks are obviously considerably minimized.
The Flat Roof Company has built up such a good reputation in the industry that it has regularly been approached by others wanting to set up. Due to this, the company began operating carefully-trained and regulated franchises and now has a network of 20 around the country. “We are fully licensed by the British Board of Agrements, a watchdog in our industry and similar ones., says Kevin, “We are subject to regular quality checks before relicensing, so we know we are doing things right.”

Blue Cross Update Winter Tips
When the temperature drops over the colder months there are a few things we need to do to keep our pet warm and safe. Like us, some pets are more reluctant to go outside when it is cold and rainy but try and keep to your dog’s usual routine if you can and make sure they still get their daily walks and exercise. You may need a coat for them if they are a shortcoated breed such as a greyhound or Chihuahua. If your walk takes you near water in freezing weather it is best to make sure your dog is on their lead until you are clear. Dogs can run out onto the ice which can be dangerous. Don’t go after your dog if they get onto ice as it can be highly dangerous for you too. Grit and salt can get in between paw pads and can be painful so give their feet a wash when you get home. Also be vigilant with your cat if antifreeze and salt are being used around the neighbourhood. Both can be very dangerous to cats but they seem to enjoy licking it.
Charity Ev how yo ents: u can
Pets spending more time indoors can get bored so make sure you put time aside for a game. They might also put on weight if they aren’t getting as much exercise so it is worth giving them a bit less or hide some of it around the house.

Don’t let pets stay outside too long either. Just like us they can develop hypothermia and frostbite. Cats can sometimes get stuck somewhere unsuitable so it might be best to keep them indoors when it is really really cold.

The Blue Cross Big Neutering Campaign Blue Cross centre in Thirsk has cared for almost double the number of unwanted and homeless kittens compared to last year. Sadly, this is a trend across the country with more and more litters of puppies and kittens being abandoned and pregnant pets given up to charity centres. The only solution to this growing crisis is for more pets to be neutered to prevent the suffering of even more puppies and kittens being given up or even being thrown away like rubbish. In October Blue Cross launched a ‘Big Neutering Campaign’ to raise awareness of the benefits of getting pets neutered. Not only does neutering prevent unwanted litters being born, but there are also many health benefits for pets. If your pet isn’t neutered yet, make sure you talk to your vet about the procedure. For more information about the campaign visit www. bluecross.org.uk/neuter If would like to find out about the pets looking for homes at Blue Cross in Thirsk, or about our events, or to make a donation please contact the centre on 0300 777 1540, email thirsk@ bluecross.org.uk, visit the website: www.bluecross.org.uk/ thirsk or join us on Facebook and Twitter!
