EBay selling Should you pay Tax?

Online auctions such as eBay, car boot sales and adverts all provide opportunities for selling and making a little money in these recession hit times. But have you ever stopped to wonder whether you should be paying tax on your sales? Did you know that H M Revenue & Customs targeted online selling in 2012 and will be contacting people that they feel have been trading.

Are you trading? Individuals who sell a few personal items to raise cash or clear out their loft

are not trading. But if you are making a living out of selling on the internet you certainly are trading and should be paying tax. HMRC gives specific guidance on their e-trader campaign at HMRC.gov.uk/campaigns/emarket. htm. If you are buying goods to sell you probably are trading so analyse your own personal position to reach a decision on this.

HMRC Campaign In 2012 HMRC ran a campaign to target people who were trading on the internet. This was called the e-Markets Disclosure Facility. Although the eMDF closed in June you can, if you have arrears of tax reduce your penalties by making a Voluntary Disclosure to HMRC.

Selling personal goods If you are disposing personal possessions including furniture, crockery, china, silverware etc this will not normally be classed as trading. There are separate rules relating to this type of disposal. Technically they are called chattels and as such are liable to capital gains tax. Again there is an HMRC helpsheet which can give guidance on this matter.

Peter Tarren For business planning and tax advice call Peter on: 01609 779400 or email him at: p.tarren@euraaudituk.com or drop in at: 87 South Parade Northallerton

Are you a collector? Similarly a collector who is now looking to dispose of items or if you are selling goods acquired as a hobby you would not normally be classed as trading so this would not be liable to income tax.

Claiming expenses If you do decide that you are trading it is important to reduce your taxable profit as much as possible. The money you receive on eBay is not your profit as firstly you need to include all the expenses from eBay, PayPal etc that you have been charged. You can then deduct the cost of the item which you have sold and if you do not have any record of the acquisition cost then it would be acceptable to estimate the cost of the sale item. After that, there will be any other costs of postage, bank charges etc including all the usual costs of running a business. Once all these have been taken into account you will then arrive at the net profit from your trading business. As you can see you need careful analysis to decide whether your own personal circumstances mean that you are trading or not. There are many resources available on the Inland Revenue website and it you wish to discuss this with me I will be more than happy to go through your personal situation with you.

‘Independent Living’ Base Completed

Thirsk Clock is piloting a new project. Staff at Thirsk Clock have had an increase in the number of requests for practical help from young people and adults over the last year. The difficult economic climate is causing individuals and families difficulties. Thirsk Clock has run a furniture recycling project for five years, where community members donate unwanted small household items and they are given to young people as they move into their first home. Space to store things or fix items is limited in the Church Hall so Thirsk Methodist Church kindly offered us use of their cellar. The cellar has lain dormant for many years and as a result had become very damp, dark and home to spiders. With generous donations from local businesses including Howdens, Yorkshire Deals, North Yorkshire Timber and B&Q and with the help of a group of young people from the National citizenship service, the cellar has been transformed. The cellar consists of three rooms, two of which are now fitted with workbenches shelving and tools which will be used to teach practical life skills to young people as well as for repairing furniture and equipment. Thirsk Clock has also received generous

6

Thirsk & Easingwold infocus

assistance from May Gurney, who provide infrastructure support to the council, in the form of unwanted bicycles. These will then be refurbished to provide work transport for young people. The larger of the three rooms can be used for the storage of household items which will be checked, labelled and stored for issue to young people moving to independent living. They then spent the week in overalls transforming the cellar into what is now a valuable resource for the clock and young people.

The cellar will be the base for Thirsk Clock’s new pilot, ‘independent living’. Generous donations from Sowerby Now and Thirsk Action Group mean that staff will be able to help young people with any practical issue which may be causing them difficulty such as fixing a bike, using a computer or small d.i.y. tasks. If you have any unwanted small household items, tools or food, please contact us on 01845 524494.

Independence Day Rather than being about the film this article is about financial planning. When it comes to financial planning, one of the answers that people often want to know is, when will they have amassed enough wealth (property, pensions, savings and investments and business assets) to be able to retire? Using cashflow modeling which is basically a year by year income and expenditure account for your household, it’s possible to estimate the point at which you will be financially independent, Independence Day. By planning this, you clearly have a better chance of leading the lifestyle you want than leaving it to chance and ending up “cutting your cloth according to your means”. The key ingredients to finding your independence day are your current situation (income, outgoings, assets and liabilities). Using these as a start point the cash flow modeling projects into the future to establish the point at which you no longer need to work actively to support your lifestyle. This would allow for any goals which you might have, e.g. education fees, travel plans etc. Clearly the cost of your planned lifestyle is very important and it is worth spending some time understanding what your lifestyle costs you now and how this might change in future.

18 Thirsk & Easingwold infocus

Understanding the point at which financial independence is reached, can help you plan the future with confidence. It can also be a reality check but it is an important step in planning for the future. For example, it might be that it’s not possible to support your planned lifestyle if you carried on living in your current home but by allowing for downsizing it becomes possible. This is then an option which you can take into account when making your plans.

The second chart (below) shows that by moving their retirement age to 67, they have sufficient funds to be financially independent. Note that this doesn’t allow for downsizing which would form part of the financial planning discussion.

With this overview, more detailed financial plans can be built which target your personal goals and objectives. The chart below shows the cash flow for a couple who plan to retire at 60. Please contact me if this type of financial planning would be of interest.

The red in the chart from age 78 shows that there are insufficient funds from this point to support the cost of living.

Autumn garden tips September is the time when there is an abundance of fruit and vegetables in the garden. It can be a problem wondering what to do with all your produce but now you need to think ahead to the winter. Try freezing the best young vegetables; don’t wait for them to become seedy or tough before you do something. • Your potatoes should be dug up by now or they will be nibbled by keeled slugs and spoilt. • Store them in hessian sacks in a cool, dark frost free place. If you don’t have Hessian sacks use paper potato sacks from the chip shop, they will do quite nicely. • Sweet corn is ripening now but don’t pick until the tassels are brown and dry. Whilst the cobs are still on the plant, peel back some of the green husk and gently squeeze a single corn seed between your finger nails and look at the colour of the liquid that comes out. It should be milky when the cob is ripe. • Autumn fruiting raspberries are coming steadily now and I can’t recommend them too highly. You will pick a bowl full three times a week from a small patch up until the first frost.

Sweet corn is nearly there, but don’t pick them too soon!

• If you don’t have any but have space then buy

some bare rooted ones from a specialist grower to plant between November and March. We put eight plants in a year past March and they have filled a bed 10ft x 3ft. • Keep picking beans, the more you pick, the more you get. Some varieties like Borlotta and many French Beans can be left to dry on the plant and the seeds saved to eat as pulses in

20 Thirsk & Easingwold infocus

winter stews. British Runner Bean seeds tend to be a bit tough and don’t soften and cook as well as their foreign cousins. • Save some seeds for next year, store in a cool dry place and they will romp away when you sow them.

Collecting seeds

Annual flowers like sweet peas can be kept going by constantly picking the flowers and removing any that are going to seed. This is called ‘Dead Heading’. Once again you can allow some to set seed which will keep to sow next year. Collect the seeds on a dry day and finish off drying in cool, dry place.

September is great for harvesting your veggies

• Start pulling up your carrots as soon as they’re big enough to eat. It’s best to harvest them in the evening to avoid attracting carrot fly. Late-sown carrots must be lifted by October to be stored over the winter. • Store in a paper bag so they can breathe and keep in a cool place until next year. • Onions need to be dried in an airy place until the leaves are yellow and crisp, when you take off all the roots and the dirty outer layers so they will store well. String them up in ropes of up to ten or put a few in net sacks. They need air circulation during storage in a cool place.

Finally keep a look out for caterpillars on your cabbages and sprouts. Pick them off and put out for the birds to eat - yum!

Blue Cross Update Charity events: How you can help us

The summer fundraising fun day was another success and Blue Cross in Thirsk would like to thank everyone who came along - despite the downpours! We hope for a nice dry day for our next fundraising event which is the popular sponsored dog walk on Sunday 7 October, it takes place again in the grounds of Studley Royal, the beautiful World Heritage Site in Ripon. Although we welcome dogs, you can still take part without one! There are two versions, a shorter three

mile walk which sets off between 9am until 2pm, or the longer walk which begins between 9am and noon. Dogs must be on leads and all those taking part will get a special certificate. All funds raised on the day will go towards help us to care for all the homeless and unwanted dogs and cats at the centre. Blue Cross is a registered charity and does not receive any government funding, so relies on the support of the public to continue its vital work to keep pets healthy and happy.

Thinking of getting a pet? If you are considering taking on a pet please come and see us. We always have lots of special cats and dogs who really deserve to be living a healthy life in a happy home and there are many benefits to taking on a pet from Blue Cross. Firstly, all Blue Cross animals are given a full vet checkup. Making sure important vaccinations, flea and worming treatment are all up to date. Pets are also neutered before they go to a new home (if old enough for the procedure) to prevent more unwanted litters. Every animal is also carefully assessed to find out what sort of home environment they have been used to, their personality traits and what they would need in

their new home. People looking for a new pet are asked to fill out a ‘Homefinder’ form so that their lifestyle and type of pet they are looking for can be matched to the pets at the centre and first introductions can be made. Blue Cross are there for new owners for the rest of the pet’s lifetime if they need any advice on any aspect of their pet’s behaviour. If would like to find out about the pets looking for homes at Blue Cross in Thirsk, or about our events, contact the centre on 0300 777 1540, email thirsk@ bluecross.org.uk, visit the website: www.bluecross.org. uk/thirsk or join us on Facebook and Twitter!

Could you provide temporary foster care for homeless pets? Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Thirsk is calling out to animal lovers who can help look after pets in their own homes for a short period until a permanent new home is found. Some dogs find kennel life a bit of a struggle and would really benefit from time in a real home while we continue the search for their new forever family. The Easingwold Players are getting into gear for their next play, Steel Magnolias, which is to be performed at The Galtres Centre from Wednesday 21st November until Saturday 24th November at 7.30pm. The play has an all female cast of 6 under the direction of John Roberts. The action takes place in a hair/beauty salon in Louisiana and deals with the lives of the women and their stories. It is a hilarious and touching play. There are two young characters, Annelle, who is a new recruit to the salon who turns out to be married to a wrong-un. Shelby who is looking forward to her forth-coming marriage but her health is an issue throughout the play. The owner of the salon, Truvy, is a middle aged extravert with a heart of gold. The mother of the bride M’Lynn, is the wife of a very successful business man who hates pigeons. Two other characters are Ousier, wealthy, lovable but acerbic and Clairee the widow of the Mayor and quite a “rock” to the rest of the group.
