All parents want to get the best start in life for their children. Using child friendly investment vehicles can be a perfect, but often underused, way of achieving that. These can range from school and university fees to helping your child get onto the property ladder. It would be impossible to cover all the options here but would like to demonstrate some of the more usable options.

Junior ISA’s

Junior ISA’s have an annual tax free investment allowance of £3,600 and this means that up to age 18 there is the potential to put up to £64,800 into this fund. The growth on this is tax free and hopefully it should go a long way towards covering university fees. These funds have real advantages in term of tax efficiency and switching and the money is locked away until the child is 18. However, there are disadvantages as the child does gain control of the funds at age 18 and if the funds have performed well could be going to university with a considerable pot of money!

Baby Bonds

These operate in a similar way to a Junior ISA but with a subtle twist. Funds are invested into shares selected by the insurance company and the bonds run for 18 years. However, at the age of 13 the funds are switched to lower risk funds to protect investment returns.

Children’s Bank Accounts

Funds placed into a child’s bank account becomes their money although accounts for the under 7’s normally require an adult to set up the account and act as signatory. For the over 7’s control can be maintained by use of a second signatory and this can stay in place until the child reaches 18. As the funds belong to the child they have a personal allowance and can currently earn up to £9,440 a year before paying tax. If the cash is as a result of a gift from a parent the interest is taxed on the parent if it amounts to more than £100. So whilst the adult can retain control, if large investments are made they may have tax implications.

Children’s Pension

If parents or grandparents are looking to provide long term funds for retirement then children’s pensions are a useful vehicle and offers similar features to an adult pension. Most pension providers require a minimum contribution of £20 and these are invested in much the same way as an adult pension. The funds will be locked away until the child reaches the minimum pension age which is currently 55. Under current rules they would receive 25% of the fund at that point as a tax free lump sum with the balance providing a pension. A child can apply for tax relief on up to 100% of their earnings or £3,600 per annum gross if lower. This applies even when the contribution is paid direct to the pension provider by the parent or grandparent.

Summary

As you can see there are many child friendly investments in the market place and this article has covered some of the main players. No individual situation is the same as another’s and, therefore, you need to take advice before making the correct choice. However, there are many options available to give the child a nest egg for the future as well as creating and interest in tax advantage for the investor. ........................................................................... Local Family Man is all set to clean up in Northallerton, Ripon and surrounding areas. Terry Taggart has launched his own Oven Cleaning Business as part of the Oven Wizards Franchise. Terry has lived in the local area for nearly 30 years, and, as he knows the area really well, he believes there will be a strong demand for his services. Terry says “I was looking for a business idea that would be something I would enjoy doing and that would provide a great service to local people. I came across the idea of an oven cleaning business and then started to research the market. I soon realised that becoming an Oven Wizard offered me a great opportunity, particularly with the support of a successful Franchise Brand”.

Mark Abbott, owner of the Oven Wizards business said “From the first time we met Terry, we knew he would make a great success of running an Oven Wizards Franchise, particularly because of his great passion for customer service. There is a growing demand from people who want to have their oven’s professionally cleaned because it is probably the hardest and most hated job in most households ”. Oven Wizards have provided Terry with comprehensive training which will enable him to professionally clean all sorts of makes and models of ovens. As well as Northallerton and Ripon Terry also covers Thirsk, Yarm, Stokesley and Bedale.

Women doing what they do best – making friends New friendship website launches that brings women together for fun, friendship, interests and adventure It is well known fact that women love to have friends. Just look at the coffee shop culture in Ripon – aren’t there lots of women supping their skinny lattes and catching up on the local gossip? And don’t women love their interests? Trips to the cinema, meals out, walks in the countryside, book clubs‐ women just love to get together and have fun. But we all have dreams, whether it is to play tennis, travel to Africa, or to set up a business. And sometimes we need a companion to share things with. And there are times when we all feel isolated or fed up. Whether divorced, widowed or having moved to a new town, there are times when everyone is in need of a friendly face. And this is where new friendship website www.togetherfriends.com can help.

Togetherfriends.com is the brainwave of Helen King, a mother of three who has lived in Yorkshire for 20 years. With her children beginning to fly the nest, she suddenly finds that she has more time for herself and a whole list of ambitions that she would like to fulfil. Helen recognises that she would prefer a friend to share her plans with, and came up with the idea of togetherfriends.com. Helen is enthusiastic about the possibilities her new site offers women who want to reach out to others like themselves.

Togetherfriends puts like-minded women in touch with each other, based on age, location and interests. It offers a new concept in friendship. Although there are many clubs out there that women can join, there are few other sites where women are linked to just one other ’friend’ at a time.

Easingwold Players Silver Anniversary Easingwold Players celebrate their Silver Anniversary in April with a double bill of comedies by two of Britain’s best loved playwrights: Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer and The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard. John Lister directs The Real Inspector Hound. It is a play within a play, in which the theatre and reality become hilariously intertwined. Birdboot (David Pike) and Moon are theatre critics. The former is very much the senior man and has seen it all and done it all. In contrast, Moon (Jonathan Lewis) is younger and still keen to make his mark as a critic. They share some wonderful dialogue during a new whodunnit on the London stage in which Cynthia (Hannah Spencer) is the Lady of the Manor.

l Comedy Curry Night at Thirsk Racecourse

Kerry Barker (left) and Hannah Spencer in The Real Inspector Hound

One is a millionaire collector of modern art who could transform Brindsley’s life by buying some of his work. The other is Colonel Melkett who is yet to meet his prospective son-in-law. Seeking to impress both visitors, Brindsley has borrowed some furniture from his neighbour, Harold Gorringe (Cameron Smith) but he’s a worried man. ‘I’ve got a foreboding. It’s all going to be a disaster. An A-one copper-bottomed, twenty-fourcarat disaster.’ He’s not wrong, particularly when the lights fuse and Clea (Hannah Spencer) - his ‘ex’ turns up! The plays will be at the Galtres Centre, Easingwold, from Wednesday 9th to Saturday 12th April. Barbara Topping was the founder of Easingwold Players 25 years ago. Local people interested in forming a drama group homed in on her shortly after she came to live in the town. Word had got out that she had had experience with an amateur group in the Midlands. As the inaugural production Barbara went for Alan Ayckbourn’s Mother Figure and Gosforth’s Fete. Susan Rinaldi-Butcher retired after 15 years of service as the Players’ Hon Secretary. ‘I started without a computer,’ she says. ‘Liking things neat, tidy and orderly I wrote the Committee minutes out in long hand and had them typed at the local shop. No-one ever knew I couldn’t type.’ Susan became well known for her efficiency and her high standards of commitment. She expected the same from others. ‘One retiring Committee member,’ she says, ‘told me he always knew when he had made a remark or suggestion I did not agree with: I would raise my eyebrow.’ After her 15 years Susan thought it was time for fresh thinking and an understanding and sympathy with new means of communication. ‘I am not into Facebook or Tweeting. Give me my Parker pen and Quink ink any day.’ Richard Wood rw.tykescript@btinternet.com 01347 868247 Susan Butcher, our recently retired secretary.

GARDEN VIEW

No one likes a

Soggy Bottom! It’s a phrase normally associated with BBC2’s Great British Bake Off, but its not just cooks who go to great lengths to ensure their produce (pastry in this case) doesn’t end up with a soggy bottom, it affects gardeners too! I’m not talking about sitting on wet grass, or toppling over in the veg plot after too much potting-shed homebrew, but about the poor plants we expect to grow in badlydrained soil. Out in the wild, a plant’s survival depends on whether its seeds blow into a dry rock face or a sticky clay soil puddle, and that’s fine because one will die while the other thrives. But it’s very different in the domestic garden, where over-enthusiastic humans buy anything that looks pretty, dig a hole and expect it to bloom. The right plant for the right soil is as important, if not more so than its tolerance to sun or shade. Studies show that plants cannot survive for more than just a few days if left in standing water. It’s a little known fact that roots need air too...‐ well, most plants that is. You see there’s a clever lot who have adapted over the years to thrive in such conditions and they’re commonly known as bog plants. I understand it’s not

the most glamorous name, unlike their closely-related cousins such as water lilies, which are known as hydrophytes. Plants that thrive in heavy, wet clay soils, which are damp but not permanently waterlogged, include the beautiful bold leaves of the Hosta, the feathery plumes and delectably dissected foliage of the Astilbe, and any of the Primulas, which are ideal for low-growing spring colour. For fern lovers, Osmunda regalis is a favourite or for a splash of summer colour in full sun try Lobelia cardinalis.

plastic sheet, pierce it several times with a fork and then add the soil back in, you can plant a selection of the plants above. You’ll need to make sure it doesn’t dry out in the summer, so a shady location usually works best, and if you’ve only got a teeny garden, try the fly-eating pitcher plants Sarracenia. They will provide a talking point. Until next month,

Enjoy your garden!

If you have a larger garden and need to fill areas of damp soil, try the herbaceous Rodgersia which look great planted in drifts, and if you have a really large area why not try the prickly rhubarb-like Gunnera manicata: children will love standing under the giant leaves of its huge green umbrella! If you don’t have a boggy area, but would like to try growing some of these plants for yourself, why not create one? If you dig out a ‘mini pond’ and then add an old liner or

A vintage tea party, Mad Hatters or even a party with an activity like teapot painting. Decide if you are going to bake, or stock up on cakes in the supermarket. ✔ Invite friends and family to make a donation in return for your delicious tea and cake

Could you offer a hom e to

Jess?

The local Blue Cross has been pulling out all the stops to find a loving hom e for their longest reside nt cat – Jess. She is a ten-ye ar-old long-haired cat who has sadly been hom eless for nine months so is desperate for a home of her own. Jess is quite an independe nt lady but has lots of lov e to give. She will climb ont o a cosy lap for a bit of fus s but most of all she likes to explore the great outdoo rs so would really like a gar den at her new home. She doesn’t mind being left alo ne all day so long as she can play outside. All Blue Cross animals are carefully assessed and matched with each potential new owner. All pets go to their new homes after being checked over by the vet, all are vaccinated, neutered and microchipped and Blue Cross are also on-hand for the rest of the pet’s lifetime if you need any advice on their behaviour. If you would like to find out about the pets looking for homes at The Blue Cross in Thirsk, or to make a donation towards their care please contact the centre on 0300 777 1540, visit the website:
