The Matthews Police Department staff is committed to providing the highest level of service possible to the citizens of Matthews. Staffed by approximately 85 full and part-time employees, they are also aided in their mission by more than 20 dedicated citizen volunteers.

Matthews Fire & EMS is a combination department consisting of a career Chief, career Deputy Chief, Administrative Assistant, four career Captains, three career Lieutenants, 21 career Firefighter/ EMT’s, and over 70 volunteers, ranging in rank from FF/EMT through Assistant Chief. Effective October 1, 2020, the department boasts an ISO Class rating of 2.

Matthews Fire & EMS respond to approximately 4,100 calls for service each year. The department also respond to neighboring cities and towns when requested as part of the county mutual aid agreement. In addition to emergency response, the department also participates in numerous public relations events.

Novant Health Matthews Medical Center

Provides a wide-range of health services to families in Matthews and surrounding counties. Private patient rooms, an emergency department, inpatient and outpatient surgery, radiology, laboratories, a diagnostic treatment and support service area, an intensive care unit for critically-ill patients, and a special emphasis on maternity care are offered. A 26,500 square-foot Women’s Center features labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum suites.

Atrium Health Urgent Care Matthews

Convenient care for sudden illnesses and non-emergency illnesses and injuries that require primary or acute medical care. Matthews Free Medical Clinic (MFMC)

This nonprofit provides free, quality healthcare to low income, uninsured patients in Mecklenburg and Union Counties. All patients must verify residential and income requirements and go through a new patient screening. MFMC primarily relies on medical and non-medical volunteers. Over 30 volunteer providers allows them to provide acute and chronic primary care, gynecology, cardiology and pulmonology related services, orthopedic, chiropractic and acupuncture services, physical therapy, behavior health services, nutrition counseling, smoking cessation, educational sessions and much more
