Pet License All dogs, cats and ferrets four months and older residing in Mint Hill must be licensed annually. Proof of a current rabies vaccination from a veterinarian is required to purchase a license.

License fees vary depending on whether the pet is spayed or neutered. Fees for fertile animals are $30.00 and those for sterile animals are $10.00 for a 1-year license and $25.00 for a 3-year license. License fee exemptions may apply in certain situations.

Animal licenses may be purchased by mail or online from PetData. For general information and to register your pet online go to www.petdata.com or call 1-877-835-8523.

On July 26, 2021, AC&C rolled out a new animal license program that includes QR code technology that provides personal pet information making identifying lost animals even easier by using smart phone technology. The new license tags replaced the old version on July 20, 2021 and is supported by pet identification company, PetHub.

Owners are encouraged to activate their new license at PetHub.com/Go where they can set up a free profile of the pet, including photo and contact information, address and other vital information. Existing licensed animals can receive a new tag if renewed in person at AC&C at 8315 Byrum Drive, Charlotte, NC 28217. If you would like to exchange an existing tag for the new format, the fee is $2 and must be purchased in person.

Rabies Vaccinations North Carolina State Law requires every dog and cat four months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. This law also applies to ferrets within the city limits of Charlotte. The animal's first rabies shot is good for one year and subsequent vaccinations are valid for three years.

If you have recently moved to NC and the rabies vaccination was given at a vet outside of NC then it is still a valid shot.

The fine for failing to display a rabies tag is $50.00 and a $50.00 fine may be levied if your animal does not have a valid rabies vaccination.

Leash Law Mecklenburg County has strict leash laws that apply to all animals except cats. • Animals must be on a leash, contained within a fence or an operable and marked invisible fence.

• An animal may be loose in its own yard if there is an adult (18 years or older) immediately next to the animal and the animal responds to direct verbal commands.

• ALL dog owners that take their dogs for walks in their neighborhoods and/or in public parks (not dog parks) are required to keep their dogs on leash. Driving With Animals As of 12/1/17, any driver that is operating a moving vehicle is not allowed to have an animal on their lap. Not only is this dangerous for the animal but also the driver should a wreck occur. Violation of this law will be a $100 fine and court costs.
