DSDN144 Digital Photographics Depth of Field

When focusing the camera one focuses on a precise point in the distance. At each side of this point of focus the sharpness decreases. However the falling off of this sharpness is not altogether apparent. The zone in which this acceptable sharpness occurs is known as DEPTH OF FIELD. Depth of field varies depending on number of factors. 1. The aperture. The smaller the aperture the greater the depth of field. 2. The focal length of the lens. The shorter the focal length the greater the depth of field at a given stop. The distance between the object and camera. The nearer the object, the shallower the depth of field, the further the object the greater the depth of field.
