1. LESSONS AND INSIGHTS FROM PHASE ONE OF THE PROGRAMME

#DigitalSI @digi_si

5

Defined key characteristics of digital social innovation

Mapped networks of over 1000 organisations involved in supporting, developing and delivering digital social innovation Developed recommendations for how policy, funding and regulatory measures can be changed to better support DSI #DigitalSI @digi_si

6

Four technology trends in DSI Open Hardware

Open Data

New ways of making and using open hard-ware solutions and moving towards and Open Source Internet of Things

Innovative ways to capture, use, analyse, and interpret open data coming from people and from the environment

Open Knowledge Co-production of new knowledge and crowd mobilisation based on open content, open source and open access

#DigitalSI @digi_si

Open Networks Inovative combinations of network solutions and infrastructures, e.g. sensor networks, free interoperable network services, open Wifi, bottom up-broadband, distributed social networks, p2p infrastructure.

Mapping organisations supporting DSI across Europe in multiple Bethnal Green Ventures ways‌. Chaos Type of support or activity

Communication Camp

Networking Events, Fairs, and Festivals

Fablab Amsterdam

Running Incubators and accelerators Hosting and managing maker spaces and hacker spaces Through research projects or research networks

Tyze

Delivering digital social services Providing funding and social investment Advocacy and advisory or expert bodies #DigitalSI @digi_si

Lessons •

Mapped 752 projects by 1196 orgs

Most DSI projects are driven by new organisations

Most activity on Open Data and Open Knowledge, least on Open Hardware

Less activity in Eastern Europe.

Few organisations with large DSI networks, with majority of organisations disconnected

Relatively weak influence, links to existing civil society networks &c

2. CHALLENGES TO THE FUTURE GROWTH OF DSI IN EUROPE

#DigitalSI @digi_si

10

A thousand flowers bloom‌.great creativity, but very few have gone to scale

A field largely driven by start-ups, new organisations and networks with little uptake by established charities, social enterprises etc.

At times too much focus on the technology and too little on the social challenges, making it hard to communicate the benefits to wider audience

2. HOW TO MOVE UP IN SCALE AND MAINSTREAM DSI

SUPPORTING DIGITAL SOCIAL INNOVATION

Support ideas – accelerators, experiments, mining social value of emerging digital technologies, VR to blockchain Generate evidence through experiments showing impact within specific areas of society (health, social care, refugees cities &c)

#DigitalSI @digi_si

14

SCALING DIGITAL SOCIAL INNOVATION

• Capital – ensuring investment capital suited to stages of innovation • Procurement – opening up public sector to smaller, early stage ventures

CHANGING WHOLE SYSTEMS • align R&D, regulation and policy change • focus on priority fields: money, democracy, health, transport • place-based experiments

Lessons from Uber?

• • • •

Extreme simplicity Predicting and meeting demand in real time Aggressive public affairs Huge reserves of capital

i. Support ideas – accelerators, experiments, mining social value of emerging digital technologies Ii Generate evidence through experiments showing impact within specific areas of society (health, social care, refugees cities etc.)

Iii Scaling: procurement, capital, common standards, open data

Iv Whole systems change – money, democracy, health …; place-based experiments #DigitalSI @digi_si

3. THE FUTURE

• New generation democratic infrastructures? • Data owned as commons? • New models of genuine sharing economy? • New models of co-created public service?

• Opening up to rest of civil society, trade unions, faith organisations & showing value • Learning how to shape public/private/people partnerships • Winning greater automatic role in the EU level debate
