Turns out this is what H&M stands for, back in 1947 H&M’s founder originally named his women’s clothing store HENNES ,which is the Swedish word “For Her”. Then as Harpen’s reports, the founder later merged his store with a brand called MAURITZ WIDFORSS and then combined the names to form HENNES & MAURITZ

In November 2004, selected company’s stores offered an exclusive collection by fashion designer KARL LAGERFEID. The press reported large crowds and that the initials inventories in the larger cities were sold out within an hour, although the clothes were still available in less fashion sensitive area until the company redistributed them to meet with demand. In November 2006, the Company launched a collection by STELLA MCEATNEY and in November 2006 by AVANT GARDE, Dutch designers, Victor&Rolf.
The company was founded by ERLING PERSSON in 1947 when he opened his first shop in Vasteras, Sweden. The shop exclusively sold women’s clothing. A store was opened in Norway in 1964 shortly after, in 1976, the first store outside Scandinavia opened in London and in Europe in 1998.
