Squidoo has become increasingly popular in recent times and deservedly so, as it is an excellent way of getting your message out about your niche and even more importantly a way of making sales. So what is Squidoo and how is it going to help your business?

At its most basic Squidoo is made up of thousands of different webpages and each of these pages is called a Squidoo lens. These lenses are free and very easy to create and can drive a whole host of traffic to your website, blog or affiliate link. The Squidoo interface is very easy to use, being basically point-and-click, and there are a whole host of ready-made modules which you can add to your lens, both to add interest and variety and also to monetize it if you so wish. A Squidoo lens is basically article marketing with a lot of oomph. The oomph comes from this wide range of modules that can be added to the lens to really help make it individual and stand out from the competition. Squidoo is easy to use, has great support, can earn you affiliate commissions or product sales, will drive traffic to your site and above all is a load of fun. Ok, so by now you should be totally sold on the premise of Squidoo and keen to get started, so without further ado, let’s get going.

Firstly, What Not To Do…. You are probably rearing to go and have it all planned out in your head what you want to write about and how you want to go about driving traffic. Before we launch headlong into our first lens though, just a quick word of warning about what is not acceptable over at Squidoo. These are all direct quotes from Squidoo itself and if you want to see the full list head over to the Squidoo Policy Update: No Spam: “The kind of spam that the world is (unfortunately) the most familiar with is email spam. Unwanted, irrelevant, selfish, and often automated email from scammers and tricksters and people out to waste your time. From people who don't have your permission to talk to you. Over the last few years, this has metastasized into blog comment spam and social network spam. Spam is also commonly defined, and more generically, as the act of tricking people with useless content. It's is an aggressive act. It means stuffing pages full of keywords or links to trick search engines. It means masking links to surprising places. It means redirecting traffic. It means lying to your readers and taking advantage of them. We don't tolerate spam at Squidoo. If you find spam, please tell us! If you find a great lens, tell everyone”. No X-Rated or Porn: “We're removing X-rated lenses from Squidoo. Most significantly because: 1. X-rated content is unfortunately more attractive to spammers than to participatory readers and good content creators. 2. While X-rated lenses tend to get decent traffic, they make practically no money for the community or the people who run them. Advertisers on our site also avoid these pages. It's not a practical financial move to sustain these lenses any longer.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

3. We get a disproportionate number of DMCA take down notices and spam reports and various legal complaints about X-rated lenses. Our team is just too small to justify this added work, and we'd rather focus our spirit and energy on the good stuff.” No Junk Topics: “Junk topics are topics that have demonstrated an overwhelming attraction to spammers, like:          

Free movie downloads. Hoodia Gordoni. Acai berry reviews. Toenail fungus sales. LoseBellyFat! Pharmaceuticals. WoW gold farming. Forex reports. Adult content. And on and on.

You know it when you see it. In fact, this stuff can be so bad that most people just skip calling it junk and go straight to calling it spam. So, we're making it a lot harder to publish lenses on junk topics.” No Overly Promotional Lenses: “So to help you focus your lenses, and sell even better--and to help surfers find our pages more useful overall--we're introducing a limit to the number of outbound links to the same domain that you can have on a lens. If you have more than 9 links to the same domain on a single lens, your lens could get locked for review. Let me explain a little more. That doesn't mean you're limited to just 9 outbound links total on your whole lens... just 9 to the same exact domain. Any links generated by Squidoo modules (like the Amazon module or the Wikipedia module or the eBay module) don't have a limit, nor do feed modules (like the RSS module or the Zazzle module) or modules that your readers post in (like Guestbook and Plexo and Duel modules).”

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

No Plagiarism: “If you find a lens that you can demonstrate beyond doubt has clearly ripped off someone else's content, word for word, without credit, please let us know. Soon we'll have a more robust reporting page to make it easier on you to send in, and easier for us to track. If we get a report that your lens is the one plagiarising, we'll lock your lens. Remember, lensmasters are responsible for the content they put on their lenses. As the hosts of a user-generated content site, it's not up to us to mediate disputes and determine copyright. So if there's an argument about the content of your lens, it's up to you to handle it directly. Otherwise your lens will stay locked.” Ok those are the key areas. Of course do your own research and check out Squidoo’s own terms and conditions for a complete list of do’s and don’ts. Another place you will want to visit will be the Squidu Forum. Here you can ask questions and find a complete FAQ list. People are very helpful and if you are ever not sure of something, head over there and put the question out there – you will be surprised what a positive response you will get.

Let’s Build Our First Lens Ok, first step head over to http://www.squidoo.com/ and get signed up. The first screen you will be taken to will look like this:

Click on the ‘Not yet – this is my first lens!’ button and then click on ‘Get Started’. You will then be taken to a screen where you can begin your first lens. In order to show you all the steps of creating a lens I am going to write a review of a great Samantha Milner e-book called List Sneakiness, which is all about building your list and profiting from it.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Click on ‘Go To Step 2’ and you will be taken to the next screen. Here you just select the bottom option ‘I Just Want To Do My Own Thing’ and ‘Go To Step 3’

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

The next box is important as you need to think about the title of the lens and the URL, both of which should contain your long tailed keyword. Once you have made your choice for the URL of your lens you are not going to be able to change it at a later date, so make sure you select wisely. You also need to choose the closest matching category, in this instance I have chosen SEO and Affiliate Marketing. Then mark the lens as G – i.e. suitable for all, unless of course it is a niche which would be considered R. Then click on ‘Go To Step 4’ and we will move on to keywords.

The next step deals with keywords, or as they are called on Squidoo, tags. This step lets you put in 3 further keywords for your lens. Just think of three main ones for the moment. You can come back and add up to 40 tags at a later date so ©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

it doesn’t matter if you don’t cover every base at this point. In this example I am going to choose the tags below and then click on ‘Go To Step 5’  list sneakiness  build your list  monetize your list

Step 5 is concerned all about royalties or making money. You can earn revenue from all different areas of your lens, from the eBay and Amazon modules, through to Adsense and adverts. You can either keep this money for yourself, and when you reach a certain threshold have it transferred to your paypal account, or you can donate it to the Squidoo charity fund or a charity of your choice.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

For now I am just going to click on the button that says ‘I Want Cash’ as we will come back to the pros and cons of the other choices at a later date. I will then click on ‘Go to Step 6’ and move on.

Ok, so now we get to step 6 and we are very nearly there. It is at this stage that we sign up for a free account and can really get going. In the first two boxes you need to enter your email address and then your paypal email address if you have one, where you want your money sent to once your lens starts earning. The next box is for your user name and this needs some careful consideration as it cannot be changed at a later date and is going to be the name that will be used across all your lenses. You can either choose your own name or maybe a name that would be applicable for your niche, for example if you were writing about green issues you could choose ‘Green_Living’ or something similar.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

For this example I am just going to go with my own name and for the purposes of the screenshot I have grayed out the sensitive information, however you can see the general idea.

Then click ‘Done’ and you are ready to rock and roll! We have now arrived at your first lens and we are ready to add some content.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

When you first look at this page it may all seem a little daunting, however believe me once you have created your first lens or two you will wonder what you were ever concerned about. It is all very intuitive and this book is going to walk you through every step, so that at the end you have a brilliant lens and can start driving some traffic. The first place to start is with the ‘Introduction, Contents & Discovery Tool’. Here we are going to put the introduction to our lens and add an image. Where possible always add images to your text modules, as they really help to add interest and to bring the page alive. Think about it from your own perspective, would you rather read a page that just has line after line of text, or one that is broken up by interesting and relevant pictures. A great place to find stock images if you don’t have your own is either http://www.bigstockphoto.com/ or http://www.sxc.hu/. Here you will find a mixture of free and low cost royalty free pictures that should meet all of your needs.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

The first step then is to start with the Intro Module, which when you click on edit will look like this:

Here you need to include your title and a introduction to your lens of a few paragraphs. You also need to include a photo and all you need to do here is to click on browse and upload from wherever you have saved it on your PC. Then click on the next tab across ‘Table of Contents’ and click the ‘Yes’ button to include a table of contents. It is always a good idea to have a table of contents at the top of your lens as firstly people can see at a glance what is included in your lens and secondly people can click through to the section that they are interested in if they want to. Because you are including a table of contents it becomes all the more important to have unique titles for each of your modules. For example if you add a ‘You Tube’ video module, you don’t want it left with the title ‘New Video’. You want to change it to something that reflects the content of your lens. As Squidoo

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

itself says, lenses with a Table of Contents tend to get more clicks to their content and more revenue.

Lastly you need to click on the Discovery Tool. It is best to turn this on as it makes it easy for Squidoo browsers to find your lens. There is also a space to put three suggestions for you to link to. Once you have more lenses up and running you should include your other relevant ones here. In this way you will be driving traffic between your lenses and not off to someone else’s page. You now have your intro module in place and it is time to start adding some other modules. Squidoo expects any lens to have at least 3 modules, not including the intro module and the Guestbook, should you choose to include one. I am now going to add all my text modules first and then later we will come to adding all the other ones that I think are important. Of course as you grow and learn with Squidoo, you will become more confident and will come to ©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

experiment with other modules. It is impossible for us to cover all of them here, as some are only relevant to certain types of lens or certain niches. Ok so my lens is going to include 5 more text modules, so I will go ahead and add these in from the Add Modules Shortcut in the right-hand toolbar. In the section below you can also reorder the placing of your modules and in what order they will appear in the lens.

I am going to click on the green plus sign until it says 5 text modules and then I will click add. Ok, so now I can add all my text and accompanying pictures into the text modules. This is done in exactly the same way as we did with the intro module.

Š2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk ď€

Creating an HTML link One important thing you will need to know when inputting your text modules is how to create an HTML link. Now don’t be immediately alarmed, as this is not nearly as scary as it sounds. An html link just means that you can have a piece of text which when you click on it will take you straight to your website or affiliate link. I am now going to show you how to link the text ‘Click Here’ to the site www.linksneakiness.com. The code you need is as follows: <a href="url">Link text</a> All that means is that in the section that says <a href="url">Link text</a> you need to add in the url link that you want to take people to. So in this case it would be: <a href="http://www.listsneakiness.com">Link text</a> Then in the Link Text, you want to add in what you want it to actually read in the lens module, and here we want it to say ‘Click Here’. <a href="http://www.listsneakiness.com">Click Here</a> So the complete link would be as follows and all you need to do is include that in your text in the module and you have created your first html link: <a href="http://www.listsneakiness.com">Click Here</a> There is lots more html you can put into your lens and most of it is fairly straightforward, for example centering text or making it bold. This isn’t the place to go into html in detail, however if you could like to explore adding more to your lens then here are a couple of great lens which will walk you through it. Basic HTML for Squidoo Advanced HTML for Squidoo

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

We now have the start of our lens with all the content in place. Now comes the fun part of adding some modules.

I am going to add a Twitter Follow to this lens, an RSS feed, I am going to rename the existing Guestbook and I am going to add a Big Arrow Link so that people can click through to List Sneakiness and hopefully buy the great e-book  First we go back to the ‘Add Modules’ in the side bar and click on the blue writing at the bottom which says browse all modules. Then click on the left had toolbar of this module which opens that says ‘All Modules’. This will bring up an alphabetical list of all the possible modules which can be added, and as you can see there are a LOT! We are interested in:  RSS: Add Your Blog  Twitter Follow  BIG Arrow Link

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Add these in and then as I said before they can be reordered in the module on the right hand tool bar. Twitter Follow First off, do you have a Twitter account? If you don’t have one you should head over to Twitter right now and get one. Then you need to read all about how to make the most of it in Samantha Milner’s FREE e-book Become A Twitter Expert in 24 Hours. Right, now you have your Twitter user name, let’s add it to your Squidoo lens. In this way you will attract more followers from your niche and over the longer term make more sales. Go to the Twitter module you have added to your lens and click on ‘Edit’. Then in the Title section fill in what you want the module to be headed up. In this instance I would say something like ‘For More Tips On Making Money Online – Come Follow Me On Twitter’ I don’t usually worry about the subtitle, but then I do complete a short description - both of these fields are optional, so it is up to you what you want to do here. However, remember you are trying to encourage people to follow you, so that you can put your information in front of them again on Twitter. I then complete my Twitter username, and choose 5 results to show and hey presto I am done.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

I then click ‘Save’ and head back over to look at how the Twitter Follow looks. This is a really great way to integrate your Squidoo and Twitter accounts and there are also other Twitter modules within Squidoo, which you should definitely experiment with once you get going, as they all fulfill different needs.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Big Arrow Link The next module we are going to look at adding is the Big Arrow Link and this is the easiest way of getting your link in front of people and getting them to click through to your site. There are lots of other similar modules such as ‘The Most Important Thing’ and the ‘Post-It Sticky Note’ and as you set up more lenses, you should try all the different ones to see what fits best with your lens. The great thing about Squidoo is that there simply are so many modules available so you can shake it up a bit and make all your lenses look unique. Not bad for a site which is so easy to set up.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Move down then to the Big Arrow module and click on Edit.

Here you only have two sections to complete. The first is the URL of the site you want to link to and this could be your own blog, website or affiliate link. The choice is yours. The second is the name of the link. Click Save and that is another module done.

Š2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk ď€

It is important to remember to include ample links back to your website throughout your lens, although don’t overdo it. The lens has to provide just enough information that people don’t feel shortchanged and that they have liked what they have read so they are more likely to seek out other information from you. RSS Feed The reason I always add a RSS feed to my lenses is because as the blog gets updated then it is constantly bringing fresh content to your lens and this will really help with your Search Engine Ranking. If you have a blog of your own then you should use the feed form that, as at least if the person clicks on it then they are going to more of your links. If you don’t have a blog of your own then I would suggest you use a more informational type blog, which is related to your niche or is news related. For my purposes I am going to link to Samantha Milner’s blog www.myeasyonlinepay.com. The easiest way to get the feed is to add forward slash and then feed to the end of the URL: www.myeasyonlinepay.com/feed

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

You can if you wish to provide a brief description of the blog as well. However, the key here is to bring in fresh content.

The Guestbook Module I always add a Guestbook to my lenses as people like to comment and it makes for greater interaction with your audience. People’s comments are also fresh content which Google and other search engines tend to love. Make sure you just change the generic title of the guestbook so that it reads as something more personal to you and can be found in the Contents List. The Right Hand Toolbar The lens is now nearly complete and all the content has been added. Let us look then at the options down the right hand toolbar to see what else needs changing before the blog is published and goes live. Themes At the top you will find the theme selection box:

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

To make it easier before you make your selection you can preview any of the themes by clicking on the underlined blue name of the theme. For example if I want to see what ‘Gone Camping’ looks like I will click on the name and get the following:

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

If you like the theme you can also choose to make it global, which means it will be the default theme for all of your lenses. I don’t tend to do this as I like each lens to look different and I think it is important to make it fit with the general color scheme and design of your lens. However, this option is there if you prefer it. My Bio The next two sections to change on your lens are your bio box and photo. Here you should just write a little about yourself and provide a photo, either of yourself or something which identifies you or fits with your niche.

It is also a good idea to link to your blog, Twitter profile or any other site you wish to draw attention it. You can do this by creating an html as I described earlier. The bio box doesn’t need to be hugely lengthy, but it should tie in with your niche and if you are going to write about a number of different subjects, then make sure you amend the bio box accordingly for each lens.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Tags The next section we come to is a very important one and that is the keywords associated with your lens or as Squidoo likes to call them – tags. You can add up to 40 tags on Squidoo and here it is important that you bring to bear the keyword research you have done when building your own website or blog. You will also find suggestions from Squidoo itself. What is important to remember with Squidoo lenses is that you need to tweak them frequently, at least once a week, to keep them fresh. One of the ways of doing this is to add new tags. So don’t think you have to rush and add all 40 at once, as long as you have the main ones in there you can let the others evolve more slowly, whilst keeping your lens updated.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Lens Settings In this section you can change in which topic you are placed – this is the one that you chose when you were setting the lens us. You can also change the rating of your lens, although it is unlikely that you are going to want to do this, unless your content radically changed.

This is also the section where you can opt out of the two different types of adverts. Firstly, link ads, which are the ones where certain text is highlighted by Squidoo with a link to an external site, not chosen by you. You can choose to opt out of these and you have to weigh up the extra revenue from Squidoo, against the fact that they will be leading people away from the product that you are hoping to sell or the site that you want to promote. Secondly banner adverts which are the ones that appear at the top and side of your finished adverts. There is a catch with opting out of these adverts however, and this is that you can only opt out if you are donating 100% of your Squidoo royalties to charity. If you want any part of the royalties from any module for yourself then you cannot opt out. The way I decide about this is as follows. If my lens is really based around my own site or an affiliate link that I am trying to drive people to, then I always opt out as the less distractions people have the more likely they are to stay on your page and check out your link. However, if I was building my lens around say a physical product, for example the Nintendo Wii, and I want to add eBay and Amazon modules to my lens in order that people buy from them and I can share in the revenue, then I will stay opted in to the banner ads because it means I can take the cash commission for myself. That, simply put, is the way I make the decision.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Royalties This leads us to the next section which focuses on where you want any royalties to go, to charity, to yourself or to a combination of the two. When you are making your choice bear in mind what has been said in the previous paragraph on adverts.

We have now made all the changes to the lens that we need to and we are ready to publish and to take it live. The publish button can be found at the top right of the lens

Let’s Get Published Click on the Publish button and Squidoo will spring into action. Once you have published your lens for the first time, Squidoo will ask you if you want to go back and edit it or if you want to view your lens for the first time. Click on ‘View Lens’ and stand back and admire your handiwork – and feel just a little bit proud at your new achievement  ©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

As you can see I am donating 100% of my royalties from this lens to a charity and in that way I can opt out of the text and banner adverts. I believe this helps to keep people focused on the message of my lens and more likely to click through to my links. Speaking of the publish button you will need to click on this when you have completed your lens and also after every change that you make, even if that is just making a single change to a tag. I would now like to walk you through some key parts of your Squidoo dashboard and see what other options you have. The dashboard provides you with a wealth of information, it would be a shame to miss any of it.

Š2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk ď€

Squidoo Dashboard When you log in to Squidoo you will go straight to your dashboard, or alternatively there is a link to it from the top of any of your lenses. Here you will find the following tabs and to follow will be a brief explanation of each one and what you can change there or what valuable information you can find out about your visitors and the performance of your lens.

Daily Digest: The first tab is the daily digest and this is just a lowdown on your lenses, what has been performing well, what you have recently updated etc. Lenses: The second tab is labeled Lenses and provides you with:  A complete list of your lenses  Their rank within Squidoo  Their rating i.e. if anyone has given them a star rating which appears at the top of each lens and if so, the average rating score  How many visitors each lens has had in the last 7 days  Revenue – if they have generated any cash in the last 7 days  Editing – when were they last edited Healthchecker Within the My Lenses tab the healthchecker can also be found. ©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

This is very helpful as it gives you feedback on your use of keywords, on traffic, on backlinks etc and how all of these can be improved or increased. My Stats: This section is made up of a summary, traffic sources and royalties. The most interesting section is the traffic one, as it tells you where your traffic is coming from and also provides you with a list of keywords that people have searched under in order to reach your lens. If you click on the little plus sign + next to any of these keywords you can then add them to your lens. You must publish it again though before they will become live.

Š2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk ď€

My Comments This lets you know if any comments have been left on your lenses, so that you can monitor them and respond if you wish to. My Groups A number of people have set up groups on Squidoo and you can join up to these if you wish to in your niche. My Profile This is a very important section.

Š2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk ď€

Here you can change the information about you, update your bio and picture, add links to your other sites all of which will appear on your profile page. You can also change your account and payment settings and perhaps most importantly link to your Twitter and Facebook accounts, if you have them. By doing this it means that whenever you publish a new lens or hit publish after making some modifications you have the option to Twitter your lens or post it to Facebook, both important actions in driving traffic to your lens. Once you have made the changes to your profile then you can always check out how it appears publicly by clicking on your bio from your lens. Here’s a look at my Midnight Eden one.

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

It is important to spend some time adding as many details as you can to your profile. Not only is it your public face, but it is a way of driving extra traffic to your external sites. There is one more section to tell you about in the dashboard. Down the left hand side you will see various options and one of these is a section called ‘Don’t Miss This Tool’

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Two important pieces of information you will find here are the details of your ‘Refer a Friend’ link and also how to ‘Transfer A Lens’ to another Squidoo account. Just one point to remember here is that you can only transfer a lens, once you have created at least 3 lenses in your account. Still it is something to bear in mind as you progress in your use of Squidoo. While we are talking about Squidoo accounts it is worth mentioning that you can create as many lenses as you want to within your Squidoo account and you are also allowed to have as many different Squidoo accounts as you wish, as long as you can provide a new email address for each one. I tend to group my lenses together within a niche specific account. For example if one of my niches was on pets, I would have all my pet lenses in one Squidoo account, and in this account I would cater my profile links etc very much towards a pet theme. Then if I had a different niche, such as baby products I would create an entirely different Squidoo account for this. A Couple of Great Tools For Squidoo Squidaholic: Squidaholic lets you find out who is talking about your lens, how you can get the latest info on your niche and also provides lots of great ideas for how you can promote your lens. You can also keep an eye on the competition and see how your lens stacks up against others in the same niche. Be careful though, once you start it will keep on drawing you back for more 

©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

Squidoo Lensroll: This is a great place to promote your lens and to get others to view and vote on it. You may find that you get quite a number of visitors back to your site from the Squidoo Lensroll.

Building Your Brand Whether you are selling your own products or affiliate marketing, it is important to get your name out there and to build your brand. As an example of this we can look at two of Samatha’s Squidoo lenses, one under her own name Samantha Milner and another under her brand DSM Publishing. By doing this you are getting brand recognition within your niche and also it gives you the ability to either showcase your own products or if you are in affiliate marketing then you can demonstrate the products you would most highly recommend.

Driving Traffic To Your Squidoo Lens You have now created your first lens and the next, very important step, is to get some traffic to drop by your lens and check out your content and your links. This in fact is the key part to Squidoo success. Obviously you want your site to look attractive and to promote your product, but this won’t mean anything if you don’t have any visitors. A key way to drive visitors to your lens is via getting a backlink from another site, just as a social bookmarking site or an article directory. Also the more backlinks you have the better your lens will perform in the Search Engines, amongst them Google, and thus you will receive more natural keyword search traffic. Let’s look then at the top 5 ways to start driving traffic to your lens. Step 1: Social Bookmarking The first step is to use the tools that Squidoo provides you with on your lens. At the top by the title you will see a number of social bookmarking logos. After creating your lens you should social bookmarking them at about 20 different sites. By all means include the ones on Squidoo but also find some others as ©2005-2009 DSM Publishing Limited. All rights Reserved. www.dsm-publishing.co.uk 

well. Below I have listed 20 of the top ones that I find work very well for me and that get some serious traffic arriving at my lens.

Here are the top 20 Social Bookmarking sites: StumbleUpon Likaholix Redgage Facebook Digg MySpace Twitter Delicious A1 Webmarks Clipmarks Faves Folkd FriendFeed Jumptags Reddit Tagfoot Isle of Squid TipDrop Zimbio Propeller Step 2: Articles A great way of driving traffic to your site is by writing articles which link back to your lens in the bio box. Two of the best are EzineArticles and ArticlesBase. Articlesbase isn’t a ‘dofollow’ site for your links, however their readers will reuse your articles on their blogs and this will then add backlinks to your lens. Below I have outlined 10 of the best article directories.

Here are the Top 10 Article Directories: Ezine Articles ArticlesBase Go Articles Bukisa ArticleDashboard ISnare SearchWarp Buzzle ArticleCity ArticleAlley Step 3: RSS Feed

The RSS symbol is the place to get your feed for the lens and to submit it to Google. When you click on this you will open a new window which will give you the feed address. For example mine would be: http://www.squidoo.com/xml/syndicate_lens/list-sneakiness-review Then you can go to Google Blog Search and ping your site. Step 4: Forum Signatures Forums in your niche can be a great way to drive traffic, as not only can you see what sort of things people are asking questions about, and hopefully provide the answers to these on your Squidoo lenses, but you can also establish yourself as an expert in your field and thus people are more likely to check out your forum signature and see what else you have to offer. If you are in the Internet Marketing Niche then I would highly recommend the Warrior Forum. If you want to look for forums in your particular niche just go to Google and then type your keyword + forum. When you join any forum you should gradually build up your number of posts – answering people’s questions intelligently, offering opinions and help where necessary and getting to know

people. Remember to add a link to your lens in your signature and in this way you will again be building backlinks and driving traffic. Below you will find a post I made on the Warrior Forum giving away a free report I had created. As you can see the link to my Squidoo lens on ‘List Sneakiness’ appears in the signature. This clearly demonstrates the power of the forum signature as I am promoting myself whilst helping others and not having to over-promote or go for the hard sell. You will be amazed at how many clicks through to your lens you get from sources such as these.

Step 5: Twitter Although Twitter has already been mentioned in the ‘Twitter Follow’ module in Squidoo and also in the social bookmarking section, it is so important that I think it deserves a section of its own. People write about all sorts of things on Twitter; what they are doing that day, their home-life, their business interests, even what sandwich they are eating right now. The only real way to explain it is to pop over and take a look. If you like you can follow me here: Midnight Eden’s Twitter or just take a general look around. When it comes to tweeting about your newly created Squidoo lens you want to make it sound interesting, so that people are tempted to click on the link and view your lens. Let’s look then at the update we should post about my new List Sneakiness Review Lens.

Once this update goes out it should generate some clicks through to your lens and make sure you don’t do this just the once, but at least every day and also each time you update or make any changes to your lens. Over To You Well as you can see Squidoo offers a wealth of possibilities for promoting your products, websites and affiliate links. It is now time for to start building some lenses and enjoying the traffic that you will bring to your links. Good luck and I wish you every success in building your online business.
