ARTIST’S IMPRESSION OF NORTH FACADE

Hangar 82 hosts the Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facility for Bombardier jet aircraft, in Essendon Fields Airport. The new Service Centre is the only Bombardier facility in Australia, servicing Australasia.

The building’s envelope draws inspiration from the aircraft curves and Bombardier’s corporate identity. It is a tailor-made building from both an aesthetical and operational point of view. Bruce Henderson Architects have collaborated closely with Essendon Fields and Bombardier, to ensure the client’s detailed design specifications have been implemented in an optimum way.

The 4,700 square meter hangar and Fixed Base Operation (FBO) facility include a lounge for aircraft owners, guests, pilots and crew, as well as meeting rooms for use while jets are serviced.

The maintenance hangar has been designed to enable two Global 7500 aircraft (the largest and newest corporate aircraft in Bombardier’s range) to be parked side by side during servicing, assisted by a five-tonne gantry crane.

Bombardier’s Melbourne Service Centre has been completed in 2022. This service centre will provide customers with a variety of service options including scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, modifications, avionics installations and AOG support for Learjet, Challenger and Global aircraft.

3. STOP WAREHOUSE

Location: Piraeus – Athens, Greece

Area: 3,185 m 2

Permit: 2019 Estimated Cost: $ 7,000,000

Architect: RCTech

Design Stages: Feasibility Study, Design Development, Town Planning.

Responsibilities: Design, BIM modelling & management, Architectural Reports and Documents, Building Permit Drawings, Building Regulations Consulting, Communication with the engineering team and Councils.

Key Achievement: Created the first customised BIM model, parametric families, and visual styles for R.C.TECH, which were accepted as templates and used in future projects.

24

The site is located in a traditionally industrial area in the port of Piraeus, Greece. The last five years, the neighbourhood is gradually shifting from old forge workshops to residential, office and commercial uses. Proximity to the port also facilitates transfer of goods.

This mixed-use building consists mainly of a high-tech warehouse, a small manufacturing unit of personal protective equipment, offices and owner’s apartment.

The layout of the building has been organised in two distinguished zones. The warehouse area and the remaining functions. The warehouse occupies the full height of the building, whilst the manufacturing facility and the offices are stacked beside it. The owner’s apartment sits on top the latter, enjoying the views of the city and the sea.

The restrictions driven by the town planning regulations, budget, and the function of the warehouse not only in the interior but also the exterior of the building, lead to the design of a compact rectangular volume. The exterior consists of a white striped envelop, indicative of the industrial cladding systems. The openings have been placed to the south of the building, where the functions require natural light and ventilation.

To protect the building from the harsh southern light, a second skin of horizontal louvres wraps around from south to west, also hiding staircases and fire-exits.

The aim of the design focuses on creating an industrial building, that would reflect the identity of its context, in a contemporary, minimalist and sustainable way. The principles of LEED have been taken into consideration from the very beginning of the design process, and the building is to be LEED-certified.

Construction is due to start in 2020.

Cost: $ 600,000 Completed: 2013 & 2015

Architect: RCTech

Responsibilities: Survey, Construction Documents, Furniture and Material selection, Furniture Design, Sign Design, Site Supervision.

32

INTRO

Davaris Textiles is amongst the largest textile companies in Europe. In 2002 the company moved to a new building of 6,000 m², designed by R.C.TECH. Fourteen years later, some of the existing functions required to be restructured and new ones to be added to meet the company’s current needs.

SHOWROOM

The ShowRoom is the area where the textile collections are exhibited to the company’s purchasers. The main design features are the two L shaped walls, one dark and one made of glass. The dark wall accommodates the large entrance door, 1.60m wide to 3.50m high. On the other side of the dark wall, a white screen is mounted, for the display of collections of fabrics. The two glazed walls overlook the exterior space, and the reception area of the building respectively, and create a contrast with the dark walls. In the middle of Show-Room a white, sculptural table has been placed to accommodate display and collaboration. Finally, the larger samples of fabrics and ready-made garments were hung on lighter, more radiant, stainless steel structures that appear to be hovering in space.

SAMPLE ROOM

The primary requirement in this area was to organize the samples’ production process. After studying the functional needs of the department, the site was organized into three zones:

• Storage Space

• Production Area (production benches and mechanical equipment)

• Picking Area (archived samples)

Driven by function, the concept was based on the creation of white self-standing walls, which formed the backbone of the above-mentioned functions. Black glossy shelves and inox rails were mounted on the walls to facilitate the storage needs of space. White benches and the production equipment were incorporated in the form of the walls.

Openings have been carefully designed to provide views of the garden. The dynamic character of the space is visible from the reception of the building, through a fine, irregular sandblast film, inspired by the textile threads weaving.

QUALITY CONTROL LAB

The need to create a modern quality control infrastructure that meets European standards has been the starting point for the creation of the ‘Quality Control Lab’.

DESIGN MAP

The aim of the workshop design was to form a strong contrast between the industrial space and the fully modernized laboratory. Within a gray context, the quality control lab becomes a benchmark, thanks to its minimal design, consisting of a white L-shaped volume and a black, prominent surface that constitutes the basic entrance and signage of space.

The shape of the floor plan was driven by the analysis of the industrial requirements, as defined by the production engineers. The opening of the volume offered views to the warehouse and vice versa. The furniture consist of white free shelves and benches upon which the different work areas are placed (quality control, metering, storage, archive).

FINALLY

The main objectives of all the proposals were to efficiently serve the operational needs of the building and to amplify the company’s products quality. Finally, a particular goal was that architecture would provide a sence of order, even during intense workload.

Three Crowns is an international arbitration law firm, with offices in four countries around the globe. R.C.Tech designed the interiors of the Paris office. Our collaboration started in 2015, designing the interior of the 3rd floor, while in 2017our team undertook both the design and construction of the office extension.

Three Crowns’ Paris Office is located in an Art Deco building of the early 20th century, along the historical Champs Élysées Avenue. The building itself has a distinctive personality and spatial qualities that have been preserved and highlighted during the design of its’ interior.

The dominant axis of the building is the one connecting the entrance with the lobby and the ‘rotunda’ meeting room. In these spaces, symmetry and asymmetry, combined with basic geometrical shapes create an architectural composition generated by the circularity of the shell.

Two axes that meet at the centre of the ‘rotunda’ meeting room shape the wings of the offices and the auxiliary spaces. The shorter wing consists of executive offices, and the longest the associates and the administrative staff. All offices have been tailored to the needs of the users after conducting interviews.

The main design principles in all spaces were functionality, simplicity and elegance. Soft contracts, white furniture and carefully designed lighting contributed to underlying the city views, the strong axes of the building and the existing / maintained decorative elements. In carefully selected places, oak shelving units form ‘warm’ background elements that add variety to the spatial qualities of the office. There is also a lighting provision in specific walls, to host artworks that will complete the original architectural intentions.

On a steep hill of Kythera island, with unobstructed views of the Ionian Sea, a French family chose to build their summer house. The plot used to be a pasture, and the ruins of the traditional masonry sheds are still scattered along the plateaus of the property. The largest linear plateau has been chosen to build the house with the minimum environmental impact.

The brief included one main house for the family and two small guest houses connected with each other through the communal seating/dining area. This area has a symbolic role. It is the welcome area for the visitors and the meeting space of the complex, referring to the traditional ‘plateia’ (Greek word for town square). Smaller, private outdoor seating areas have been designed for each house, overlooking either east or west, to provide naturally shaded relaxation spaces depending on the time of the day.

The clients have been visiting the island for several years, and are great admirers of the vernacular architecture. So their request was to incorporate morphological elements and textures, drawn by Kytherian tradition. Sculptural white volumes, different white textures, micro cement flooring, rough wooden structures, stone retaining walls, traditional chimneys and downpipes made of roof tiles were some of them. Some of the roofs are accessible and equipped with built-in sofas, to enjoy panoramic views of Cape Malea during the evening.

The interiors are smartly designed to accommodate holiday needs in the minimum building area. Buil-in shelving units and wardrobes made of white concrete contribute to the casual and sculptural look of the interior.

Sustainable design is a high priority in R.C.Tech’s designs but becomes a must when building in a remote area, with limited natural resources. The following principles have been followed in order to achieve our environmental goals. A rainwater tank of ~ 70m³ water capacity collects the rainwater from the roofs and uses it for irrigation. Cross ventilation, designed to receive the prevailing winds, assisted by ceiling fans is the main cooling method. Thick insulation is wrapped around the building, to prevent overheating. Double glazing has been used in all doors and windows. Reed roof shadings cover the pergolas above the verandas.

The project achieved to meet all the morphological and functional requirements of its’ owners and sits naturally and respectfully on this particular Mediterranean landscape.

The project is located in a suburb of particular natural beauty, at the edge of a forestry area. The landscape, protected by law, is characterized by mild slopes and dense vegetation (pine trees, cypresses, olive trees, etc.) and sparse buildings, while at the same time any new construction has to be approved by an architectural committee.

The brief included two residences (conveniently named A and B) for two siblings and a semi-independent guesthouse (1/2 house). Underground parking and the exterior spaces around the swimming pool were to be shared.

The favourable southern orientation of the large side of the plot led to the concentration of outdoor activity areas along it, and to the development of the main facade around these areas. Taking into consideration the functional requirements, the mandatory setbacks, the regulations and the sustainability principles, the functions are allocated as follows.

In the basement are placed the parking bays, mechanical facilities, storage areas, and other auxiliary spaces. On the ground floor are the living areas of the two houses, and the guest house which is attached to house B. The 1st floor has private use and includes the bedrooms and bathrooms of each house. In the roof of both houses there is a green roof, solar panel and mechanical equipment (heat pumps, TV antennas, etc.) positioned in places not visible from the street.

The preliminary functional diagram of the building led to a zig-zag shaped south facade. This immediately raised the need to smoothen it. Thus, the concept of a curved facade emerged. Building on this idea, the building was ‘shredded’ by white walls that run parallel to the north side of the plot, and curve as they ‘unfold’ to the south. The last curve (main southern facade), incorporates a curved pergola for shading and balconies into a single form. The volumes between the walls are painted gray, contrasting with the freestanding white walls.

During the further processing of the building, another morphological element emerged; the small ‘unfolds’ on the north and west sides of the building. They function either as windows facing the prevailing winds or forming recesses, such as the one in 1st floor patio. Finally, another striking element are the ‘stripes’, which appear as blinds on the north and south sides or as pergolas on the ends of the east and west sides.

Consequently using a distinctive and repetitive architectural vocabulary, the two houses form a single, sculptural, morphological ensemble, the primary purpose and goal of the study.

The project is located in a residential area in the outskirts of the city of Athens, Greece. The neighbourhood consists mainly of residential or multi-residential buildings with gardens. Nevertheless, the close proximity with the neighbouring buildings made privacy a key requirement from the beginning.

The clients were a couple, who originally requested a preliminary study to explore whether a plot of 305 m² can accommodate their needs. The brief included a single-family house of approximately 200 m² with basement and swimming pool. Lack of space in the plot lead to a two-storey building with communal areas and a guest-room in the ground floor and three bedrooms on the first floor. After exploring several possible layouts and variations the most dominant solution proceeded to the next design phase.

The setbacks dictated by the regional Planning Department defined the shape of the outline of the building. Within a very strict legal framework, the architectural concept has been conceived as a white monolithic volume, with smaller penetrations in private spaces and generous openings in the communal ones.

In the ground floor, the living areas seamlessly integrate with the outdoor space, as there is unobstructed visual contact from the front veranda to the back garden, and the same floor material extends from indoors to outdoors. An additional setback of the volume has been created to either protect the big openings from direct sunlight or to create protected verandas.

On the first floor, a system of white fixed or sliding louvres ensures privacy in the sleeping areas. The exterior spaces are incorporated within the building volume and partially surrounded by fixed louvres. The vertical louvres are a repetitive architectural element in the building that adds a variety of textures and shadows to the minimal form of the building, whilst protecting from sun and weather conditions.

Finally, renewable energy is going to be used to facilitate the energy requirements of the building, by using extensive areas of solar panels on the rooftop and shallow geothermal systems underneath the basement. The aim is achieving a zero-energy contemporary model of living.

Location: Voula - Athens, Greece

Area: M Apartment = 55

L Apartment = 95 m2 Total = 145 m Cost: $ 300,000

Completed: 2017 & 2018 Architect: Dimitra Stathopoulou

Design Stages: Involved in all stages.

Responsibilities: Concept Design Construction Drawings Lighting Design Materials/finishes Custom furniture.

Key Achievement: Transformed a building with structural defects, into two highvalue apartments, that got leased immediately.

90

The two apartments were located in an existing building in a coastal area. The property used to be a single apartment of approximately 150 m². The client decided to convert it into smaller luxurious apartments of 55 and 95 m² respectively, which were currently in great demand in the property market of the area.

Despite the many structural defects, the two apartments had some hidden and unexploited assets, which were revealed after the refurbishment. The vegetation of the plot and of the surrounding area, a big park that was visible from certain points of the building, and a pine tree penetrating the balcony of the 95m² apartment were some of them.

The main aims of both refurbishments were to reconnect the apartments with their surrounding, bring more natural light in, creatively conceal an unorthodox system of beams that intersected the interior spaces, rationalize the four different coexisting floor levels inherent by the structure, upgrade their energy performance and sustainability, reconfiguring the interior to accommodate two contemporary, highly functional and euphoric interiors.

M Apartment

The 55m² apartment consists of one bedroom and an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area, all allocated in a rectangular footprint. In order to create a feeling of openness, one side of the rectangle is completely transparent, providing views of the pine trees of the front garden. The opposite side is used for storage, laundry and fan coil units. The later functions are all hidden inside an oak textured cupboard, that creates a ‘warm’ effect inside the white interior. In the bedroom, the equivalent effect is achieved by a custom-made bed. The sunrise between the pine trees is reflected in the strategically chosen mirror leaves of the wardrobe.

L Apartment

The 95 m² apartment has an L shaped outline with balconies and preferable views in the inner side of it. The short leg of the L consists of the living areas of the apartment, all overlooking the back garden where a pine tree penetrates the balcony. Two bedrooms are located on the long leg. Master bedroom was conceived as a suite room, with a work area and a round jacuzzi inside the bed area, overlooking the park nearby.

Both refurbishments achieved providing high-quality residential interiors, which provided a unique experience for their users. Due to lack of equivalent amenities in this region, the apartments got leased instantly after been completed.
