Farwest Focus Staff Farwest Region History Since inception, the Farwest Region has meaningfully contributed to the growth, leadership and vitality of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The first Farwest chapter was chartered at the University of California at Berkeley in 1921. Today, the Faithful, Fierce, Focused and Fabulous Farwest Region is comprised of 82 active chapters located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as international chapters in Japan (Okinawa and Tokyo) and the Republic of Korea (Seoul). The Farwest Region is extremely proud to have had Founders Bertha Pitts Campbell, Zephyr Chisom Carter and Wertie Blackwell Weaver as members of our region. Three National Presidents: sorors Vivian Osborne Marsh, 7th National President; Geraldine P. ear Sorors of the Faithful, Fierce, Focused and therefore Fabulous Farwest Region:

The days and months have flown by since the historic 51st National Convention, where the Farwest Region represented with almost 2,200 members present! Farwest sorors were engaged and represented in all Centennial Convention activities, from Leadership Delta to celebrating our Delta Dears with 50+ years, to applauding Contra Costa Alumnae Chapter’s award‐winning stroll, to fielding exceptional candidates, to passionate participation in dialogue during plenaries, to winning national and regional awards and recognition. We Are Delta Women, Yes We Are! Following a very brief hiatus, we moved forward into the 2013‐14 fiscal year. In Sept 2013, we welcomed Soror Ashley Christina Miller’s appointment as Farwest Regional Representative, following the resignation of Soror Parris Moore due to her job relocation to Florida. Soror Miller immediately began performing her responsibilities with dedication and excellence. Delta Days in Sacramento was held in September, due to the need for Delta Sigma Theta’s presence at the California State Legislature in the calendar year. Under the leadership of Sorors Jacqueline DuPont‐Walker, Leona Bridges and Racquel Robinson, along with many others, we were able to perform advocacy in action, packing the State Senate Hearing chambers with women in red on a mission. Our presence was featured in newscasts and was credited with providing the final push for the successful naming of the western span of the Bay Bridge in honor of the Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr. 4

ector Representative The Strategic Training Summit in Torrance, CA had record attendance of almost 350 members. We engaged in strategic planning with the regional leadership team; enjoyed a relaxed, old‐school reception with sorors representing their steps and songs from across the decades; and focused on training in diverse topics critical to member and chapter interaction and operations. Further, we held an informative Collegiate Break‐out Session and also examined factors which define our region and its impact on a national level. Additionally, we started the discussion on strategies to heighten regional influence and field successful national candidates. These are but a few of the events and accomplishments by chapters and sorors featured in this Fall/Winter edition of the Farwest Focus. Please enjoy this edition, and remember to submit your stories for the Regional Conference version, which will feature spring 2014 news. Thank you for your continued service to Delta as faithful, fierce and focused women of the Farwest Region! Yours in the sweet spirit of sisterhood and service.

At the informational tables, sorors handed out literature on the need for early detection and scheduled mammograms. The material that was provided was obtained in coordination with the Health Promotion Coordinator of the Bryan Allgood Hospital and the Breast Cancer Society. Yongsan sorors also sought the opportunity to provide SEE questions to children by providing pink bags with candy and a science or math question inside. At Chinhae’s very first “Pink Party” the community was educated not only on preventive measures, but it was also held to honor Survivors of the disease and for those who lost the fight against the disease. To wrap up a successful month of programming, the sorors in Chinhae also held its first Breast Cancer Awareness Community Remembrance Run/Walk outside of the base. One of the recipients of the information, a Breast Cancer Survivor, appreciated all that the chapter was doing to reach out to everyone. The Republic of Korea Alumnae Chapter hopes that by providing a variety of avenues to bring awareness to Breast Cancer, it will continue to stay in the forefront and hopefully one day a CURE is found. “Deltas Wear Pink With Purpose!” Submitted by Soror June Wilkins, Republic of Korea Alumnae Chapter

READ AND LEAD KOREA For the past two years the ladies of the Republic of Korea Alumnae Chapter have volunteered bi-weekly at the Seoul Library by reading to disadvantaged Korean children between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. The program, chaired by Soror Celeste Wilkerson, supports between 25 and 30 children. The children acquire reading skills by listening to chapter members read books by various authors. To help the children become more proficient at reading and speaking English, chapter members also work on assignments with them which give the children the opportunity to analyze words and spelling patterns. Reading to them has also strengthened their imagination and thirst for knowledge. Members of the ROK Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. are proud to be an on-going service to their host nation. Submitted by Soror June Wilkins, Republic of Korea Alumnae Chapter 22

San Fernando Valley Alumnae Walks for Triple Negative Breast Cancer On Oct. 5, 2013, sorors from the San Fernando Valley Alumnae Chapter walked in the Triple Step Toward the Cure 4th Annual “Stepping Toward the Cure” 5K Fun Run/Walk. This event is a day of fitness, festivities and fun and is designed to raise both funds and awareness about an aggressive form of breast cancer known as Triple Negative Breast Cancer or TNBC. One of the members of the chapter, Soror Carlin Hafiz, was diagnosed with TNBC in February 2013. Triple negative breast cancer is a subtype of breast cancer that lacks three important receptors that are used as targets for cancer treatment. These receptors are estrogen receptor negative (ER-), progesterone receptor negative (PR-), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2-). The receptors are important because they reveal where the cancer is most vulnerable and help determine how to best treat it. Since TNBC lacks the presence of all three of these receptors, this subtype of breast cancer is more difficult to treat and more likely to recur. Based in California, Triple Step Toward the Cure directly supports women diagnosed with TNBC nationwide. All of the proceeds from the 5K events go towards the organizations programs that provide services ranging from financial aid for rent, transportation, groceries, and childcare, to assistance locating clinical trials and quality medical care. To Those I Love And Those Who Love Me When I am gone, release me let me go I have so many things to see and do You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears Be happy that we had so many years I gave you my love, you can only guess How much you gave to me in happiness I thank you for the love you have shown But now it’s time I traveled alone So grieve a while for me if grieve you must Then let your grief be comforted by trust It’s only for a while that we must part So bless the memories within your heart I won’t be far away. For life goes on So if you need me call and I will come Though you can’t see or touch me I’ll be there And if you listen with your heart you’ll hear All of my love around you soft and clear And then when you must come this way alone I’ll greet you with a smile and welcome you home - Author Unknown -
