Roller coaster Casino Spring 2013, Architectural Assocation - Spring Semester Programme Contributor: Donald Taylor-Patterson
The site for this studio is a theme park in Benidorm, Spain named Terra Mitica. The town of Benidorm is a very popular tourist location in the south of Spain. However, the theme park is currently failing. The goal of this studio is to revitalize the theme park through architectural intervention. Among Benidorm’s tourist population are a high number of elderly visitors. One of the issues with Terra Mitica as a theme park is that it doesn’t currently cater to this age group even though they make up a large percentage of the tourists visiting the city. The goal of this project is to connect the park back to the city by catering to the elderly in Benidorm. The site is situated on the edge of the park with half of the site inside the border of the park and half of the site outside the border of the park. The surroundings of the site play a large part in the design process. Northwest is a roller coaster, which provides a unique view from the site. To the west is an indoor ride that blocks all light and from entering that part of the site. To the east is the Terra Mitica parking lot, which provides the opportunity for a program that

doesn’t have to be accessed through the park. One popular attraction for the elderly is a casino. Benidorm currently does not have any casinos, which leaves the elderly with little to do away from the beach. A casino for Terra Mitica would not only connect Terra Mitica to Benidorm, but would also draw the elderly to the park. The driving force for the design of the casino as well as programs in the building is largely based on views. The view of the roller coaster at the northwest of the site and the view of Benidorm at the south are the best views from the site. The indoor ride to the west of the site blocks all views from the site. This lack of view helped justify the casino program, as casinos are usually dark spaces without natural light. The circulation of the building is meant to mimic the roller coaster next to the casino. A series of ramps bring all levels of the building together while also making the building very accessible for the elderly. Benidorm’s year-long pleasant climate allow for different outdoor programs, including pools and rooftop terraces.

Hydrastructure attracts both residents and visitors to the riverside, making it not a place to avoid but a public attraction and a destination. Currently, the river at the site is inaccessible due to unsanitary conditions and an elevation difference of 15+ feet from water to ground level. We made the river accessible and playful by operating on the site with addition, subtraction, and a combination of both in three distinct levels and forms. This allows users to contact or interact with water in different ways. On the large scale, a band is inserted between the two sides of the river for circulation. This connects the two banks to one another as well as the lower and upper levels of the water. Sculpting edge conditions and inserting water and leisure programs activates the
site and draws in visitors. These zones interact with water at different levels from simply sitting near water to laying on a beach to full engagement with a water fountain and splash pad. Smaller, intimate pools are carved out below ground level. Puncturing the ceiling lets in streams of light that glitter on the water, creating an atmospheric and peaceful effect. These small pools contrast the large water areas with more privacy, quiet, and a closer sense of community. This project is a prototype and the beginning of possible expansion along other areas on a new waterway in the São Miguel, an economically depressed area right outside of São Paulo, Brazil.
