Happy New Year and I trust you all enjoyed the festive break. I am sure 2012 will bring opportunities and challenges for your business, and for your chamber much like last year.

I believe strongly in the benefits of collaboration between the public, private and voluntary sectors and will continue the work of my predecessors to ensure that this continues.

I am honoured and delighted to take on the position of president of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce at this exciting time in its development. The chamber continues to enhance its role with the new membership benefits package, plus membership of Scottish Chambers of Commerce and affiliation to British Chambers of Commerce now in place. These changes were driven forward by Gordon Barraclough during his fixed term appointment as chief executive. He has now stepped down from the board to pursue his own business interests and we wish him well. The chamber should be the first port of call for any business looking for support in Dunbartonshire and beyond and ensuring that is a priority for me. I see my role as president as one of leadership, of representing the chamber and of ensuring it continues to have a high profile. It is vital to build alliances with other business associations, to promote crosspartnership working and to share information to help members develop themselves and their businesses.

My career background is in sales and marketing. I have worked with several blue chip companies in this area and will use my expertise to benefit the chamber and its members. I step into the shoes of Robert Wilson who was president of this chamber for three-and-a-half years and, in doing so, I pay tribute to the work he has done to drive it forward and lay the foundation for my own plans. Finally, I thank chamber stalwart John Corcoran for his contribution over many years – a contribution which saw him receive an MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace at the end of November for services to business – a well deserved and fitting reward for his efforts.

£1 Billion Worth of Contracts Up For Grabs FROM THE

EDITOR I hope 2012 is a better year for business and for the economy in general. Despite difficult trading conditions, some Scottish brands and businesses thrive. Scotch Whisky is sold in 200 markets worldwide and has just had a record year for exports. It makes a huge contribution to the economy racking up sales abroad and levering in money from international tourists keen to visit the place it comes from. It is a premium product, emblematic of its origins, like another Scottish success story – golf – which is also a vital and growing element in the tourist industry mix. Events like the Curtis Cup being held at Nairn this year and the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in 2014 put Scotland on the world stage and showcase its assets. As the home of golf, Scotland has a world-wide reputation which attracts international and UK-based players. Capitalising on this makes business sense, is good for the economy and for Scotland’s image abroad. One area of the economy which is not doing quite so well is retail, with high streets and town centres, in particular, finding it tough. It is therefore good to hear that the new owners of the Artizan Centre in Dumbarton, La Salle Investment Management, are planning a makeover – and that there are potential tenants in the pipeline which will create jobs and increase footfall. There’s change at the head of your chamber with the appointment of a new president – Gary Groves – who takes over from Robert Wilson at an exciting and challenging time. The new benefits package is in place, the chamber has new offices, a new revamped user-friendly website and is looking to grow its membership and develop as a stakeholder organisation. The chamber offers tangible benefits, plus the chance to promote yourself and your business, to meet likeminded people, to network and learn, to influence and lobby at local, national and UK levels through its association with Scottish and British Chambers of Commerce.

AS part of its Commonwealth Games legacy, Glasgow City Council has established a business portal which will provide more than £1 billion worth of contract opportunities for companies of all sizes, reports Mike Haggerty. The new portal, launched by Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, at Celtic Park in front of an audience of more than 200 business people, allows businesses to compete for public and private sector contracts. He said: “I believe that this is a fantastic opportunity that I would urge our business community to grasp. This is another case of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games leaving a legacy for the city as the new portal is based on the very successful Commonwealth Games Business Portal platform.” The council developed the gateway with partner organisations to advertise public and private sector contracts. It brings together contractors and suppliers, and gives businesses of all sizes the chance to find out about and compete for opportunities arising from the city’s major construction projects, which, just like the 2014 Commonwealth Games, requires the procurement of goods, works and services of all types and values from an enormous range of companies. Once they have registered, businesses receive email alerts, advising of contracts which might be of interest. The service is completely free and is targeted at both buyers and suppliers of goods, services and works. While anyone can view opportunities, to receive information via email alerts, companies need to register and complete a company profile. Companies already registered for the Commonwealth Games Business Portal are automatically registered for the new one. A spokesperson said: “Investing some time now by registering your company details on the portal can open up a whole new world of contract opportunities to your business. It takes just a few minutes and is completely free.” She added: “Contracts will be available to all sizes of firms, so even small businesses have every chance of gaining contracts.” The portal is also linked to the Supplier Development Programme. www.glasgow.gov.uk/businessportal www.sdpscotland.co.uk

New Chamber President GARY Groves was unanimously elected president of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce at its December board meeting. The Loch Lomond businessman has been a board member for almost 10 years and has represented the chamber on many occasions at local and national level. He has been involved in a number of high profile businesses in the Loch Lomond area and now runs his own consultancy, TLC Scotland, focussing on sales, marketing and operational training needs mainly in the tourism sector. Gary had already begun to build alliances with other organisations in his previous chamber role as West Dunbartonshire Champion – something he has vowed to continue to do as president. “The chamber needs to work smarter, to promote partnerships with other organisations, to reap the benefits of collaboration with both the public and private sectors,” he said. “These are challenging times for everyone – as a chamber we need to represent the interests of members and help them develop and grow their businesses.

“I believe in planning for success for both the chamber and its members. The chamber should be the first port of call for any business looking for support in Dunbartonshire and beyond and ensuring that is a priority for me. “I see my role as president as one of leadership, of representing the chamber and ensuring it continues to have a high profile.” Gary’s background is in sales and marketing and he has held senior manager positions in a number of blue chip companies in the past including United Biscuits and British Associated Foods. In the 1990’s he launched the award-winning Coach House Coffee Shop in Luss, set up the Kilted Skirlie restaurant at Loch Lomond Shores and became wellknown locally as kilt-wearing, self-styled Gary the Kelt. Former president, Robert Wilson, will remain a board member and continue in his role as East Dunbartonshire Champion.

news in brief… Property Company Secures £40k Sales Contract CLYDEBANK Estate and Letting Agents (CELA) has secured a contract worth £40k to sell new homes in Dalmuir’s Caledonia Street. The £2m site near the Golden Jubilee National Hospital was initially developed by Strathclyde Homes which went into receivership in June 2011. It has a total of 18 properties and CELA is working closely with the receivers and their agents, chartered surveyors, Graham and Sibbald, to market them. Two three-bedroom houses have already been sold, three flats are under offer and negotiations are ongoing with three tenants to sell properties which had been let by the builder. The show flat is among 10 properties, including one house, which are still available at discounted prices. CELA boss Tommy Sheridan commented: “This is the first time a national company has had the confidence to appoint us to do their sales recognising that we are at the forefront of what is happening in the property market in the area. “Despite the recession there is still a demand for new quality built properties in Clydebank, especially where these represent value for money.”

Summer Blockbuster Tourism Boost SCOTTISH tourism is poised to capitalise on another ‘Braveheart effect’ when Disney Pixar launches its next big animated summer blockbuster in Scotland on 3 August 2012. The respected studio which was behind the hugely successful Toy Story trilogy, WALL-E and Up, has set its latest film in what it calls ‘the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland’. In ‘Brave’, the lead character Merida is voiced by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald, while Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson play her parents, King Fergus and Queen Elinor.

Scottish actors Robbie Coltrane, Craig Ferguson and Kevin McKidd also feature as lords of the land with Harry Potter favourite Julie Walters appearing as an eccentric old witch. Dr Mike Cantlay, chairman of VisitScotland, is looking forward to the expected boost for Highland tourism: “In 2012, Disney is going to launch ‘Brave’, which is set right here in Scotland. The impact for us will be huge,” he said. Mel Gibson’s Braveheart screened in 1995, grossed £120 million at the box office worldwide, and won five Oscars including Best Picture. The tourist industry in Scotland thrived as a result of the film despite its questionable historical authenticity, with visitor numbers to the Wallace Monument doubling in the summer following its release.

Claire Crowned Top Construction Apprentice TRAINEE painter and decorator Claire Burns took a top prize in the construction category at Glasgow’s Modern Apprenticeship Awards. Claire received an engraved glass trophy from Councillor Gordon Matheson at the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative (CAI) celebration dinner held in the City Chambers. More than 200 guests attended the award ceremony including her boss Robert Wilson of Wilson Decorators in Kirkintilloch. The CAI was set up to ensure the city benefits long-term from the legacy of 2014 and provides school leavers and young people from Glasgow with apprenticeship opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

Claire, who is now in her second year, is serving a four year apprenticeship which involves on the job training and part-time attendance at Anniesland College. “I am absolutely delighted for her,” said Robert Wilson, “Claire works well, is interested in learning and feedback from the college has been very positive. “She has the right attributes to become an excellent time-served painter and decorator. Everyone at Wilson Decorators is very proud of her.” Since it was set up in 2009, the CAI has helped almost 2000 young people secure apprenticeships either with Glasgow City Council or one of its many private sector partners.

Wilson Decorators has worked with North Glasgow Housing Association in Springburn for more than 20 years and agreed to employ an apprentice from the housing association’s area as part of the CAI scheme. Photo courtesy of City of Glasgow Council.

Coffee to Go at Lomondgate

XMAS CHEER: Generous staff at chartered accountants Campbell Dallas filled five festive sacks when they donated their secret Santa gifts to the Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal to benefit children and older people.

Scotland’s first Drive Thru Costa Coffee has opened at Lomondgate in Dumbarton creating 16 new jobs. It is only the fourth Drive Thru in the UK and includes a café with indoor and outdoor seating for around 100 people. It forms a key part of the Lomondgate development along with the £4.1m Premier Inn Hotel and Malt and Myre pub/restaurant. A filling station and other roadside services are also planned. The Costa opening comes hot on the heels of Taylor Wimpey announcing it had completed the purchase of a 12 acre site at the £100m Lomondgate development. The deal hinged on planning permission being granted for 110 family homes by West Dunbartonshire Council. The builder joins Persimmon Homes and Walker Group on the site, which will eventually have more than 300 residential properties.

news in brief… Chamber Members’ Business Marriage

TWO chamber members have married their skills to launch a new business venture. The Scottish Historic Buildings Trust (SHBT) and Da Franco Catering Ltd have got together to organise weddings at Strathleven House in Dumbarton. Da Franco has been catering on behalf of SHBT for the Faculty of Lawyers at Strathleven House for almost two years.

The 18th century Palladian mansion’s stately wood panelled Oak Room is the ideal setting for the service, and can accommodate a reception for up to 50 people, while a marquee in the mature, wooded grounds caters for larger groups.

Director Ben Palombo explained: “We were so impressed with the house that we suggested the wedding idea. It turned out that SHBT was thinking along the same lines.”

The new business will be unveiled at a special event in Strathleven House on 8 March 2012, with full wedding packages commencing from May 2012.

Under Starter’s Orders for Monte Carlo Rally The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre was delighted to be chosen as the official hotel for competitors and GTG Training in Glasgow hosted scrutineer and administrative checks before the event. The rally, which is organised by the Automobile Club of Monaco, starts at points all over Europe, each roughly equidistant from the finish line.

FOR the first time Clydebank was a kick off point for the 2012 Monte Carlo Classic Rally.

Beardmore director, Bronagh Bell, said: “The Monte Carlo Rally is one of the most famous motor sport events in the world. We are delighted that the Beardmore is now associated with this annual pilgrimage that is synonymous with glamour, human adventure and beautiful cars.”

More than 100 vehicles and drivers set off on the 3000km plus journey from Clydebank College’s campus on the banks of the River Clyde at the end of January.

The rally was created by Prince Albert I of Monaco in 1911 and initially featured 23 cars starting from six different European cities.

SOME big name tenants are on the verge of renting vacant units in the Artizan Shopping Centre in Dumbarton. Simon Usher of LaSalle Investment Management – the new owners of the centre – told Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce that attracting more businesses to the town depended on its ambitious centre upgrade plans going ahead and on the council’s decision on other retail developments in the area. Mr Usher met with the board of directors of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce in January to discuss his company’s plans and to build links between the two organisations. He confirmed that LaSalle will be joining the chamber of commerce. He was welcomed by new president Gary Groves who said that the chamber glad of the chance to have a dialogue with the developer. Mr Usher confirmed that LaSalle will be joining the Chamber of Commerce. A planning application from LaSalle is currently being considered by West Dunbartonshire Council. If it gets the green light, work should begin on the initial redevelopment this spring with longer term plans to expand further if targets for lets are met.

New Tenants for Artizan Shopping Centre? LaSalle will cover the entire shopping area with a canopy, create a glass front and develop the upper floor as mixed use space for office and leisure purposes. There is also a proposal for a range of small units or kiosks down the middle of the revamped shopping centre and for a couple of cafés. The developers believe that around 150 new jobs could be created as a result Mr Usher acknowledged the importance of the redevelopment noting that the town centre had suffered in the past from a lack of investment. “We believe it has significant potential and have the funds in place to carry out the refurbishment,” he added. “Our plans to remodel the shopping centre will make the Artizan an attractive environment for shoppers, existing retailers and for attracting new occupiers to the site. The upper floor redevelopment we see as perfect for creating a gym, crèche, soft play area, bars, restaurants or offices.” Robert Ryan, owner of Ryan’s Pet Centre, chairman of Business for Dumbarton and a chamber member, supports the redevelopment: “LaSalle has an excellent track record in turning around struggling centres and we look forward to seeing their expertise applied in the exciting plans for the Artizan.”

Her business, By Storm, was commissioned to make two bespoke outfits for Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle for her guest star appearance on China’s Got Talent. The show has the largest viewing figures in the world and was watched on live television by more than half a billion viewers and a 58,000 strong audience in Shanghai stadium.

Joyce designed an orient-inspired red trouser suit trimmed with Chinese-Scottish tartan with matching signature tartan kiltie handbag which Susan wore to meet her Chinese audience. The jacket had three-quarter length sleeves and a mandarin collar with Chinese frogging fasteners.

Web-Worthy Words So you’ve got a business website. Pleased with it? Great! But do your customers like your site? Is it easy for them to use? Find the information they’re looking for – fast? Buy from the site? Contact you to ask for a quote? And is your site easy for users with disabilities to access and navigate? No? Then your website might have the snazziest design, the coolest colours, the most amazing bells and whistles. But if it isn’t catching – and keeping – your users’ attention, it’s not paying its way. Web users spend about 10 seconds deciding whether or not to stay on a site. To quote usability expert Jakob Nielson: “Unless your writing is extraordinarily clear and focused, little of what you say on your website will get through to customers”. Great web copy means visitors will stay on – and return to – your website. Great web copy pays. Marian Dougan Director, DNA Language Ltd

Post Christmas Debt Hangover? HAVE you splashed out over the festive period and now find the bills piling up? Nicola Standen, personal insolvency manager with chartered accountants Campbell Dallas, has some timely advice.

Translations, editing and website health-checks

Money Matters

Many consumers pay for some Christmas spending using a flexible friend or other credit facility and, like mixing your drinks on a night out, it seems like a good idea at the time! It’s not called the January blues for nothing. Once the credit card statements are issued, the casual ‘I’ll worry about it at the time’ approach is exposed and the realisation dawns that it’s time to deal with the post Christmas debt hangover! If you are prepared to be realistic and remain within a sensible, manageable budget you can pay off last year’s splurge without too much heartache – although you may have to cut some corners for a while. Write down your priority payments such as the mortgage and make allowances for food plus anything else you spend on each month. The British Bankers Association issues expenditure guidance for this purpose. It’s a good idea to use this as a guide and remember, it is just that, not a target, so you may not spend as much as they suggest or, some things, like travel, may be more. Whatever is left is your surplus income. If your contractual liabilities are un-manageable, contact your creditors with a view to setting up a repayment plan to suit your budget. Consider paying these off on a pro rata basis and remember, minimum payments will probably mean all you are paying each month is the interest. Alternatively, a debt payment programme via the Debt Arrangement Scheme may suit your needs better. Unlike the previous approach, all interest and charges cease with this scheme. It affords protection from diligence while allowing you up to 10 years to repay your debts. For more information on DAS or any other form of debt management/relief, contact Nicola Standen, personal insolvency manager at Campbell Dallas LLP on 0141 886 6644 or at nicola. standen@campbelldallas. co.uk.

Robert Wilson Hands Over Presidency WHAT surprised Robert Wilson most during his time as president of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce was the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. “People don’t realise how hard directors work to make things happen and the commitment they make to keep the show on the road,” he said. Photo by Green Highlander Images.

“I have seen what they do first hand and I appreciated their support while I was president.” Robert took great pleasure in seeing his chamber colleague and friend John Corcoran awarded an MBE for services to business in 2011.

“It is good to see someone with Gary’s enthusiasm, personality and drive taking over and he has my backing 100 per cent. “My time as chamber president has been the highlight of my business career.” Robert, who is managing director of Wilson Decorators, is also delighted at the success of the chamber magazine, InCommerce. “I believe it is one of the best chamber magazines in the country – it goes from strength to strength and is one of our greatest assets. “One of our biggest challenges was the withdrawal of the service level agreement by East Dunbartonshire Council. “That is something that hopefully will change,” he added, “partnership working is the way forward and the chamber has a lot to offer.” Robert remains a chamber director and will continue as East Dunbartonshire champion.

As he stepped down after three and a half years in the role, he welcomed his successor, Gary Groves.

SCOTTISH CHAMBERS CALLS FOR BUSINESS RATES RETHINK THE Scottish government must mitigate the planned rise in business rates this April, says Liz Cameron, chief executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce. She called on the government to reconsider to minimise the financial burden on Scotland’s hard-pressed businesses in view of the falling inflation rate Following news that CPI inflation fell to 4.2 per cent and RPI inflation to 4.8 per cent in December, she said: “The Scottish Government is planning to increase business rates for firms across Scotland by 5.6 per cent in April – a figure based on last September’s inflation rate. It is now clear that by the time this business rates increase is implemented, real inflation will be at

a much lower rate and the Scottish Government will be taking much more money from businesses as a result. “According to the Scottish Government’s own figures published after the Draft Budget, it was expecting to take an additional £115 million from Scottish businesses this year as a result of inflation. “RPI inflation at that time was 5.2 per cent, but it was September’s RPI rate that was ultimately applied, meaning that Scottish businesses will actually be paying some £123 million this year – £8 million more than the Scottish Government budgeted for. “These latest inflation figures suggest that businesses should only be paying an additional £106 million this year, with that figure set to fall further as the months go on.” www.scottishchambers.org.uk

Record Breaking Export Success SCOTCH Whisky exports reached a record high in 2011 – despite the global recession. The good news was announced by Paul Walsh, chief executive of Diageo, as he stepped down after four years at the helm of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) in December. “It has been a great pleasure and a privilege to chair the SWA over the past four years,” he said. “As the latest export figures show, the industry is enjoying a tremendous period of growth around the world, making it one of the most important manufactured exports the UK produces. That growth is also helping drive investment by the industry in Scotland benefitting both the UK and Scottish economies.” Scotch Whisky earns £125 every second for the UK balance of payments and the value of exports over the nine months from January to September 2011 amounted to almost £3 billion – up 23 per cent on the same period in 2010, according to the SWA. During Mr Walsh’s time as chairman, the industry, which employs around 10,300 people, invested more than £1 billion in its production and manufacturing capacity in Scotland. Since 2009, landmark regulations have provided more robust legal and consumer protection against fake whisky. These ensure that Scotch Whisky must be wholly matured in Scotland and not elsewhere and that is labelled correctly to reflect its origins. From November 2012, single malt Scotch Whisky must also be bottled in Scotland. Scotch Whisky has also achieved extra legal protection as a ‘geographical indication’ in many markets, including China and India, which means it is recognised as a product that can only be made in Scotland.

Protecting the Integrity of Scotch Whisky

THE SWA has a new chairman as it gears up to celebrate its centenary in 2012. Ian Curle, chief executive of the Edington Group said: “I am delighted to be taking over as chairman of the SWA at a time when the Scotch Whisky industry is in confident mood. Scotch Whisky is an iconic product and it will continue to be a prime asset and export for Scotland and the UK.” He vowed to work to protect the integrity of Scotch Whisky across the globe and to build on its export success. “With the support of governments at home and abroad to achieve fairer taxation and reduction of trade barriers, the industry can reach even higher levels. The European Union is vital to this work.” He added that some future priorities for the SWA include completion of the negotiations between the European Union and India on a Free Trade Agreement which would reduce the onerous 150 per cent import tariff. Also that in the UK, a change in the current duty regime which sees Scotch whisky being taxed more heavily than other drinks, is long overdue. He said that discrimination in the home market undermines the industry’s efforts overseas. Mr Curle has been with The Edrington Group – producers of the Famous Grouse – since 1986 and has been its chief executive since 2004. Pierre Pringuet, global chief executive of Pernod Ricard, takes on the role of vice chairman of the SWA.

Scotch Whisky accounts for a quarter of UK food and drink exports.

It is sold in 200 markets worldwide.

It sells three times more than its nearest rival whisky.

Highest price paid at auction for a Scotch Whisky was £288,000.

More Scotch is sold in one month in France than Cognac in a year.

Drinkers in the UK often choose to have it with a little water, but in Spain they mix it with cola, in Japan with lots of water and ice, and in China with cold green tea. Source: Scotch Whisky Association

Scotch Whisky Tourism Boosts Economy WHISKY distilleries and visitor centres bring international tourists to Scotland boosting the economy and jobs market. A survey commissioned by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) revealed that the industry adds £30.4 million in value to the economy and provides 640 direct and indirect jobs. It highlights the fact that nine out of 10 distillery visitors come from beyond Scotland, with almost two thirds from outside the UK.

another. Our survey shows the scale of the economic impact of Scotch Whisky and how exports can help drive up tourism. Spending by tourists, and the jobs created as a result, is injecting new money into the Scottish economy.” On average, every £100 million of Scotch Whisky exports are associated with £20.6m of direct tourism spend. With exports of more than £3bn, it is estimated this brings in around £640m of direct tourism spend to the economy.

The report also identified a ‘distillery effect’ where tourism and cultural clusters formed in whisky production areas.

China is one of the fastest growing tourist markets for Scotland and whisky was the Scottish product most commonly known and cited by potential Chinese tourists.

Campbell Evans, SWA director of government and consumer affairs, said: “Scotch Whisky and tourism can be seen as the perfect blend and complement one

Mr Evans added: “We’ve found countries which are the biggest export markets for

Scotch Whisky tend to spend more on tourism in Scotland. “At the same time, in countries where the number of tourists to Scotland increases, we see a willingness to pay more for a bottle of Scotch Whisky. It has a wide role to play in attracting overseas tourism.” To maximise the link between Scotch Whisky and tourism, the industry, hospitality sector and public agencies created the Scotch Whisky Embassy network in 2003. The network includes hotels, golf courses, bars and restaurants which meet specific quality criteria. It has added £43.2m to the economy and created almost 1,400 jobs. www.scotch-whisky.org.uk

Scotch Whisky Visitor Facts •

Laphroaig Distillery Visitor Centre on Islay received visitors from at least 61 different nationalities from June 2010 to May 2011, including Germany, Sweden, US, Netherlands, Denmark and Canada. Diageo distilleries welcomed 43 different nationalities last year with Germany, France, the US and Spain being in the top five, alongside the UK. The Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh has seen an increasing number of visitors from growing export markets, such as China and Russia. The ‘distillery effect’ is thought to have created around 6,750 jobs across Scotland in sports, recreational and cultural industries and for businesses providing accommodation, including hotels and guest houses. Many of these new positions are in rural areas where job opportunities are limited. Source Scotch Whisky Association

MARK BRISCOE, MANAGING DIRECTOR, EUROPEAN CIRCUITS LIMITED, CLYDEBANK As one of only two companies in Scotland manufacturing printed circuit boards, the focus is on small to medium-sized production for businesses across the whole of the United Kingdom.

From kitchen sink hobby to running a small craft brewery, Fiona MacEachern has her husband to thank for her new career.

A glut of apples led to Euan MacEachern making cider which Fiona admits wasn’t very good so he decided to make beer instead. He signed up for a Brewlab course in Sunderland to learn how to make beer and run a small brewery. “Lots of friends said the beer was really good so he persuaded me to go on the course too,” Fiona explained. “I was bouncing after it and absolutely knew this was something I wanted to do so I wrote myself a business plan. “Business Gateway helped me refine it and obtain a £500 start-up grant from West Dunbartonshire Council.” Euan works full-time as a project manager and helps out at the brewery at weekends. Fiona is now about to apply for a grant to take on her first employee and is looking for help with the cost of installing a mezzanine level at her premises at Lomond Industrial Estate. “This will allow me to pour the grain straight into the grist bin from above which will streamline the brewing process and be less labour intensive,” she added. www.lochlomondbrewery.com

economic development manager, welcomed everyone to the event.

Exports currently account for less than five per cent of turnover and there’s a strategy in place to ensure that no single customer is responsible for more than 10 per cent of turnover to minimise exposure to business failures. European Circuits has 35 employees and, in 2009, the company more than doubled the size of its premises with a move to a 15,000 square foot facility in Clydebank Industrial Estate. It is about to expand again by creating a 5000 square foot mezzanine floor and has an application for assistance pending with a decision expected any day now. “We have a long association with the council and have had several successful applications for help with capital spending, for staff training, for IT and web upgrading,” explained Mark Briscoe. “We have also found the mentoring support very useful too. I think in this day and age, given the scarcity of any funding for business, that this help is very welcome. “The council is easy to deal with, the forms are simple to complete and you get a quick response.” www.european-circuits.co.uk

VISIT SCOTLAND has already secured allocations for more than 6000 hotels rooms across Scotland for the Ryder Cup but up to 12,000 are needed to satisfy demand. Official accommodation and ticket packages don’t go on sale until autumn 2012. Umbrella organisation, Golf Tourism Scotland (GTS), has been building both its membership levels within the industry and its public profile with the aim of raising Scotland’s golf tourism game. Its chairman, Lee Derrick, is in no doubt as to the value and significance of the sector: “Golf tourism is important for the economy in Scotland and will continue to have a growing importance. Photo of Lee Derrick courtesy of Golf Tourism Scotland.

“ However, we cannot sit on our laurels and GTS is committed to returning Scotland to being the number one choice of the domestic and international golf tourist.” Golf tourism is a major contributor to Scotland’s economy and is estimated to be worth close to £220 million annually according to a key 2009 report commissioned by Scottish Enterprise. This sets out an ambitious vision for Scotland to be the world leading golfing nation by 2020. As a result of the Ryder Cup, Scotland is investing heavily in international marketing activity. VisitScotland has a dedicated marketing programme which targets golfers throughout the UK and in key international markets across the world. The aim is to have the highest number of people playing golf per head of population by 2020 and to have the most comprehensive player pathway to develop golfers from entry to elite levels in the world. Specific targets include having a minimum of two Scots in the 2013 European Solheim Cup team and 2014 European Ryder Cup team, seven Scots in the top 100 in the world in men’s and women’s amateur and professional golf and to grow the value of golf to Scotland by 25% from its 2008 level.

Gleneagles Voted Top Golf Resort THE prestigious Gleneagles Hotel was crowned Scotland’s top golf resort and hotel by a leading industry publication – and is now looking forward to hosting the 2014 Ryder Cup. Thousands of golf enthusiasts from across the UK voted in the inaugural Today’s Golfer Travel Awards, held in conjunction with a major golf travel operator. Awards were given across 12 categories and honoured the best clubs and courses in Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland and the UK. Stuart McEwen, Gleneagles’ director of golf, said: “We are delighted to be named Scotland’s best golf resort, an honour which is testament to the hard work of all of the Gleneagles team. “With the current, extensive upgrading work taking place on the PGA Centenary Course, the recent refurbishment of the Dormy Clubhouse and the opening of the Blue Bar, it’s an exciting time at Gleneagles and we’re very much looking forward to the future and the challenge of hosting the Ryder Cup in 2014.” Gleneagles is home to three championship golf courses – the King’s Course, the Queen’s Course, and the PGA Centenary Course, which is the venue for the Ryder Cup matches from 26 to 28 September 2014. This year, the final counting event on the 2012 European Tour International Schedule for players aiming to qualify for the Ryder Cup team next September – the Johnnie Walker Championship – takes place from 23 to 26 August. Adding Johnnie Walker as a global brand which is exported to over 180 markets around the world can only help us achieve that goal.” Diageo is the producer of Johnnie Walker whisky and also owns the Gleneagles Hotel and Resort. Gleneagles has twice before been chosen – in 2008 and in 2010 – to host the final event which attracts huge worldwide interest and showcases the spectacular setting to a global audience. Scotland’s First Minister, The Rt Hon Alex Salmond, MSP, who was at Gleneagles for the launch of the partnership, said: "The Ryder Cup is set to bring immense benefits to Scotland, both in terms of the economic boost from the many thousands of visitors and the lasting sporting legacy the golf's premier team competition will leave on the country's golfers – both young and old.” www.gleneagles.com/golf

Nairn Golf Club Hosts Curtis Cup

Photo of 16th hole at Nairn by Mark Alexander.

FOR the first time The Nairn Golf Club – which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year – will host the Curtis Cup 2012

The countdown has already begun to the biennial contest between women amateur golfers which takes place from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 June at what is considered one of Scotland’s top courses.

As a result, it has played host to a number of blue-ribbon events including the Walker Cup in 1999, the Scottish Amateur Championship in 2006 and the Seniors Amateur Open in 2007.

Nairn was recently ranked ninth best in Golf World’s Top 100 Golf Courses in Scotland based on the judging panel’s assessment of aesthetic appeal, routing, conditioning and historical significance.

Shona Malcolm, chief executive of the Ladies’ Golf Union, added: “The friendliness and support of The Nairn Golf Club members, and the worldclass standard of the course, means the 37th match is already shaping up to be a memorable occasion which will more than meet the objectives of the Curtis Sisters – ‘to stimulate friendly rivalry between players and strengthen the ties of goodwill between the nations’.”

Curtis Cup teams consist of eight players and a non-playing captain representing the USA, Great Britain and Ireland. “The Curtis Cup embodies the spirit of competition and friendship that golf is famed for, so to have such a tremendous event played over the historic links at Nairn will be something to savour,” said Graeme Govan, marketing convener for the club. Known for its celebrated greens, the 18-hole Championship Course which overlooks the stunning Moray Firth coastline has been sculpted by a host of golfing legends including Archie Simpson, Old Tom Morris, James Braid and Ben Sayers.

Out of Africa for Green Highlander BISHOPBRIGGS might seem tame after years spent in Africa, but for Neil and Terri Petrie it is now their home and the base for their growing photography business – Green Highlander Images. Neil met Terri, a South African, in Johannesburg, as he was winding down from a stint as an aid worker in some of the most dangerous and troubled areas in the region. Terri soon joined Neil in Scotland and two years later they were married. He was inspired to work abroad after being seriously injured in a road traffic accident which he was lucky to survive. For nearly 10 years, Neil worked with US-based Christian aid organisation, Hope International Ministries, ending up its president. This took him to places like Botswana, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Swaziland, Zaire, Zimbabwe, Zambia – in fact most of sub-Saharan Africa – where the people live in extreme poverty. He helped build churches and worked with communities to get people off the streets, to find them jobs, to make them self sufficient and to build the local economy. “To be honest I didn’t know what I was getting into,” he said. “I was quite naive. The extreme poverty was only part of it – it was more the needless waste of life that got to me. On occasions I would think – what’s the point but I wanted to make a difference?” Soon after returning to Scotland, Neil set up a decorating business and invested in his first digital camera. While in Africa he had begun taking reportage and wildlife photographs, and is still happiest when capturing the natural world. Neil’s clients include East Dunbartonshire Council and VisitScotland. He and Terri also take photographs for InCommerce – with Neil’s images featuring on the last two front covers. He and Terri are now about to launch a photo library to market and distribute images to charities, non-profit making organisations and local and national government. Terri is creative director and looks after project management and finance for Green Highlander Images. She has more than 15 years’ experience working for global companies and delivering successful projects for Royal Bank of Scotland, Deutsche Bank, Hewlett Packard, Cornwall College and for major blue chip companies in South Africa. www.greenhighlanderimages.co.uk Photos by Green Highlander Images.

Perfect Places for Wedding Belles MOST newlyweds will tell you the lead up to their wedding day was one of the most stressful times of their lives. It isn’t easy trying to please relatives and friends, choosing outfits, organising a venue, catering, entertainment, flowers, photographer, invitations, a honeymoon and all the other myriad details that add up to a perfect day. How can a bride and groom ensure that everything goes without a hitch – that their wedding is a special and memorable day they can look back on fondly in years to come? One way is to work with businesses offering excellent service – ones which understand and appreciate how important it is to get everything right on such a special occasion. Location is a vital ingredient in the mix – whether it’s a chic urban setting, one of Scotland’s many stunning scenic destination venues or in premises with a historic link to the past – there really is something to suit everyone. The unique riverside site on the banks of the River Clyde is a special feature of The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre in Clydebank. With luxurious accommodation and flexible indoor and outdoor spaces, weddings, civil ceremonies or receptions can be large or intimate, a full traditional Scottish gathering or a smaller celebration. Dumbuck House Hotel in Dumbarton offers inclusive wedding packages or an entirely bespoke service. The hotel can cater for up to 120 guests for a wedding meal and for a further 100 at the evening reception. There’s also the option of private dining for a more intimate, smaller wedding. Set sail for the incredible beauty of Inchmurrin Island on Loch Lomond for a wedding with a difference where guests arrive and depart by boat. Inchmurrin is licensed for civil ceremonies either outside in the garden or in the hotel’s Tartan Room. It can cater for 40 people at the ceremony and double that number at the wedding reception. Transfer of the bride and groom is by speedboat. Blending state-of-the-art facilities with centuries old historic architectural features, Lennoxlove House in East Lothian is a luxurious stately home complete with helicopter landing facilities. Wildly romantic, graced with the most historic arts and antiquities, its 460 acres picture-perfect surroundings, make getting married there a fairytale come true.

Carleith Primary Award Double CARLEITH Primary School in Clydebank notched up its second award in 2011 when it received an Eco Schools Green Flag in December.

Earlier in the year pupils at the Duntocher school achieved Fairtrade status by holding assemblies and events including a fundraising coffee afternoon which raised £120.

The Green Flag was awarded in recognition of the school’s sustainability achievements in relation to the school grounds, litter and waste minimisation.

The money and 32 filled back-packs were donated to Mary’s Meals – a charity which helps to feed children in developing countries.

The Eco committee and principal teacher, Lorna Lamb, raised awareness through assemblies, took part in a ‘Keep Scotland Tidy Campaign’, saved plastic bottles to build an eco-greenhouse and arranged for eco buttons to be fitted to school computers.

The school uses Fairtrade goods including tea, coffee, sugar and jam at school events and sells them to parents after weekly assemblies and at fundraising events. This success was down to the hard work by teacher, Jane Proctor, and the children on the school’s Fairtrade committee.

Pupils are now getting ready for their Fairtrade annual review in spring and are also intent on keeping their Green Flag by collecting bottle tops which they hope to use to create art work to decorate the school.

PUPILS’ ENTERPRISE WEEK ENTERPRISE Week saw pupils at Baljaffray Primary School in Bearsden take part in a business speed networking event. Seven local businesses, including chamber members Rennie McInnes, solicitors, were involved along with the University of Glasgow and Cardonald College. Stalls were set up in the school’s gym hall giving P6 and P7 pupils the chance to find out more about the world of work and further and higher education. A bell rang every five minutes to let pupils know it was time to move on. Principal teacher Lynn Parker said: “The event was a great success and we hope to host a similar one next year.”

Finger buffet and refreshments included.

A GOOD belly laugh and having fun at work is something Lindsay Moffat firmly believes in ... but that doesn’t mean she isn’t serious about it.

She works with people of all ages to help them get to where they want to go, to set personal and career goals and to put strategies in place to make them happen. In person, Lindsay clearly walks the walk: “You need to know who you are. On the first day of every month, I ask myself where I am, what I’m doing, where I’m going, how can I get there? “Anything is possible. I’ve never really thought that I couldn’t do things – I’m a positive person and always had it in the back of my mind that this was the kind of thing I wanted to do,” she said. Lindsay set up her personal development business after returning home from time spent travelling the world. She has been to Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and North America. She bought a camper van and drove across Europe, reaching Romania before she had to come back because she couldn’t get insurance cover. It was during this time that she developed her business idea and started building up the material for Be. Lindsay, who is from Clydebank, realised that many Scots find it difficult to embrace positive thinking and don’t like to be seen as big-headed. “Scottish people are great talking about other people positively but to getting them to do it about themselves is more difficult. It is important to drill it into your head, to practice positive affirmations.” Her final year studies at university focussed on confidence building and the use of play and inspired her to make this the core of Be. “People need to be confident to be silly, they need to let go a wee bit, not put up a pretence and not say they’re fine when they aren’t,” she explained. “People need to know it is okay to not feel good but they need to be able to express it, then we can do something about it. They want to know what the secret is, whether there is a magic formula. “There isn’t one thing you need to know – because happiness is a different thing for different people. It is about working with individuals and finding out what is right for them.” www.beasourceforlife.co.uk
