New Year’s Resolutions for eco-slackers

M

ost New Year’s resolutions are done in the first month of the year and forgotten in the next 11 months. Sometimes, people set resolutions that are impossible to do while some are lazy to stick with their list. It is not a good attitude when it comes to eco-resolutions. Now, that the environment is slowly deteriorating because of the harsh things people do to Mother Earth, it is time that eco-slackers stick to their New Year’s resolutions. Here are some ideas that you can add to your list:

Cut down your vehicle’s harmful emissions. Do something in cutting down your vehicle’s harmful emissions. Include in your resolution to ride public transportation more than using your private vehicle.

Ride a bike in short-distance trips. Using a bike can help conserve energy because it will not transmit harmful emissions whenever you want to go on the way to the covenience store near you. Choose to have a bike trip when you go for a shorter than two mile trips. Doing this can save you money on gasoline and help you become more fit this year.

Reduce phantom power. Unplugging your gadgets’ chargers is an easy task but you can also invest on power strips so you can turn off all your appliances at once. You can also buy chargers that stop drawing current when your devices are already charged. With this, you can conserve energy as well as cut your energy expenses.

• Participate in energy conservation projects. If there will be fun runs, seminars, or any event related to energy conservation (also anything about the environment), do not hesitate to sign up and join. For instance, have you tried participating in the annual Earth Hour? If you haven’t tried it yet, join it this year. It is a big help to raise more awareness.

Replace your lightbulbs. Last year, almost every energy conservation article suggested using light-emitting diode (LED) lights. Maybe this 2014 is the right time to finally do it.

• Involve your whole family in energy conservation. It will be a fun enjoyable habit for the whole family. Each one will be aware of conserving energy which will make your resolution more effective. •

Make at least one energy-efficient change to your home this year. Having an energy-efficient home is not possible to be done in a day or in a year. It requires patience and consistency. Do it one step at a time.
