Handling energy-efficient refrigerators

R

efrigerators are one of the home appliances we use continuously all year round. But how many among us know that improper use of this appliance can result in energy wastage? This is equal to higher energy consumption, and therefore higher electric bill. Modern refrigerators illustrate perfectly how energy efficiency standards can improve appliances and save consumers money. Here are some energy conservation tips when using the refrigerator and/or freezer: •

Avoid leaving the refrigerator door open. Frequent open and close of its door can result in bigger electric consumption.

Check gaskets around the unit. Door and cover leaks allow warm air to enter inside the unit if these are not properly sealed. This condition not only makes the appliance work harder to maintain the right temperature, it also leads to its faster deterioration. To check the door for air leaks, insert paper money on it. If you can slide the money out easily then you need to adjust or replace the gasket.

Cool food to room temperature before storing inside the refrigerator. Warm food placed in it raises the temperature inside and consequently increases energy consumption.

Defrost your units regularly. Frost acts as an insulating blanket which causes the motor to work overtime resulting in increased power requirement.

Clean periodically the compressor units and condenser coils at the back of bottom of the unit. Largely unappreciated until they fail, refrigerators and freezers need only a minimal amount of maintenance to run effectively.

Limit your food stock inside the refrigerator. Overcrowding your set may interfere with air circulation and overwork the compressor.

Place it far enough from the stove or range. Refrigerator will not be affected by the heat generated from the cooking if it is not placed near the area. Install it where air can circulate freely around.
