The “Smar t” Building “Smart”

G

reen buildings are also considered as smart buildings. They return higher productivity rates, have higher resale value, and of course, give more environmental benefits. Existing conventional buildings are responsible for over 40% of the world’s total primary energy consumption and for 24% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Investing in green building is more expensive but its benefits will outweigh the costs in the long run. It will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease energy consumption, and lessen water consumption. Aside from investing in green buildings, we can also explore other energy efficient building solutions such as the following: •

Timber. Timber is one of the most versatile renewable resources. It also helps maintain a clean environment and offers great resistance to the effects of salinity. Flooring. You can make your flooring more sustainable by placing carpets that have high level of recycled content. You can also try ceramic tiles or other naturally sourced materials. Lighting. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are now more recommended when talking about energy efficiency. They give off light in a specific direction unlike incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, which waste energy by emitting light in all directions. LEDs’ lifespan is also longer than conventional lights’.

Waste. Making it easy for people to recycle can make a whole lot of difference. You can also seek some firms who collect and recycle office wastes.

Furniture. Use sustainable timber and natural fabrics or furniture with high recycled content. Also, buy from manufacturers with a good track record of protecting the environment.

Water. Regularly check your facilities for leaks, drips, and other water wastes. Implement water management plan for the building. Upgrade to air-cooled appliances for significant water savings.
