Vehicle Use Reduction Program (VURP)
E
nergy is produced and consumed in a way that will promote sustainable development and the country’s natural resources utilization. Likewise, it also contributes to the nation’s overall economic competitiveness and minimize negative environmental impacts.
Hence, the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program (NEECP) goals are to improve energy utilization of all users through conservation programs and energy efficiency, and to achieve annual energy savings and emissions avoidance. The Vehicle Use Reduction Program (VURP) is one of the campaigns under the NEECP that promotes Filipinos to do the following: •

Car Less Day. Motorists are encouraged to leave their cars at home at least once a week to burn calories instead of fossil fuel and reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Carpooling. This consists of three or more people that commute to work or other destinations in a private vehicle in which members work out their own arrangements on who drives and how often, schedules, and in-charge of maintenance and gas payments. Park & Pick. Taxis and other public vehicles are recommended to park only at designated places or sites to pick up commuters. Park & Ride. This encourages the use of parking spaces where vehicle owners can leave their cars and then use the public transport system. It has less of a negative impact on the environment than taking the private car. It also helps reduce carbon footprint. Park & Wait. Motorists are advised to turn off their engines to reduce harmful emissions when parking

for more than a minute. By doing this, anyone in the parking area can breathe cleaner air. Park & Walk. Walking is a great way to improve overall health and conserve energy. This program promotes vehicle owners to park their vehicles and use bridgeways and walkpaths to move around like in the commercial centers. Try to drive to different reserves, park the car, and enjoy the views while you walk. Park2Fly. This aimed high for fuel conservation. The VURP encourages parking at facilities made available near or at the airport for domestic airline passengers.
