DTI destroys P1.2M uncertified Christmas lights In its effort to keep the safety of consumers this Holiday Season, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) led the destruction of uncertified Christmas lights worth some P1.2M at the DTI Building’s parking area on 25 November 2014. The Consumer Protection Group (CPG) and Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau (FTEB) have been working since October to enhance the monitoring of such products in the National Capital Region (NCR) area. The confiscated Christmas lights from 14 retailers bore invalid Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers and were distributed and sold in the market without undergoing the DTI-Bureau of Philippine Standards’ (BPS) certification scheme. The event was attended by DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo; DTI Consumer Protection Group (CPG) Undersecretary Victorio Mario A. Dimagiba; with special guest Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, who is also the Chair of the Senate Committee on Trade, Commerce, and Entrepreneurship; and DTI employees.

According to Secretary Domingo, the government is deliberating on giving higher fines to retailers who sell uncertified products such as Christmas lights. Meantime, on his part, Senator Aquino noted that “the destruction of uncertified Christmas lights also aimed to make sure that the Filipino consumers get what they pay for and get products that are safe for their homes.” Through all these efforts, “every step of the way we can create a safer environment for the Philippines,” he added. Meanwhile, BPS has cancelled the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) certificates of the 14 retailers who sell uncertified Christmas lights. The confiscated Christmas lights are among the brands namely, Mabuhay Star, Lucky Deer, AKO, and Seven Star. The list of DTI-certified at www.bps.dti.gov.ph.
