Manila FAME celebrates 60th year The 60th edition of Manila FAME showcased world-class Filipino and International designs and also presented young and talented designers at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia in Pasay on 16 to 19 October 2014. Among the event highlights are the Design Philippines Scenography, ‘Be Our Guest’: A Table Accessories Showcase, Manila Wear, NeoTextiles Philippines, Red Box (Home), OTOP Marketplace, International Hall, and Modernizing the Masters. Some of the showcased products were table accessories’ ready-to-buy collections developed under Design for Exports Program. They collaborated with 17 manufacturers who are experts in working with natural materials such as abaca, ceramic, wood, metal, capiz, and mother of pearl. Prominent Filipino designers were present in the event to feature their latest collections. Cebu-based furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue showcased his creations inspired by the desert, sea, and aliens.

Manila FAME Creative Director Budji Layug handled the overall creative design of the event which gave life to three stories of Soulcrafts, Luxe, and Gen C. It showcased the modern designs from a collection made by designers and exhibitors under the Design for Exports program, as well as, choice pieces from the experts in home design and fashion. The Center for International Trade Expositions & Missions (CITEM) tapped German master florist and designer Detlef Klatt, who gave product and material development assistance to local manufacturers to create a diverse yet cohesive range of merchandise, particularly ceramics, pottery, and other table top categories. He showcased a “Table Scenography” wherein baskets and bowls, trays and centerpieces, and tablecloths and placemats were arranged in an extraordinary presentation on three 13-meter long tables. The pieces that were used were made from different materials like metal, wood, and capiz, among others.

Moreover, CITEM also collaborated with two prominent Filipino designers, Eric Paras and Stanley Ruiz, for Design Philippines’ Furniture and Home Accents collections. The two teamed up in crafting the Design Philippines central setting. For the Red Box, they featured young and emerging designers; Rachelle Dagñalan, Joseph Rastrullo, Leeroy New, and Lilianna Manahan. Fashion icon and Natori Company CEO Josie Natori worked with notable fashion designers Cesar Gaupo, Lulu Tan-Gan, and JC Buendia in this year’s edition of Manila Wear. The exhibit’s highlights are tropical wear and island-inspired pieces. The Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotion’s (BDTP) One Town, One Product (OTOP) worked with senior designers Viña Domingo-Roy and Rey Soliven, who both mentored Dagñalan and Rastrullo, to produce the latest collection from the regions. “This edition of Manila FAME is set to unfold cutting-edge collections of handcrafted products designed by the Filipino craftsmen. Through this bi-annual event, CITEM intends to solidify the image of the Filipinos’ artistry and design ingenuity in the global community,” CITEM Executive Director Rosvi Gaetos said.
