Employees play a key role in the success of a business. No matter how hard they work, there is one thing that can deter their overall success rate: confusion about their role. Up to 50 percent of employees have a hard time understanding their exact role in a company. This is a problem, even if there’s a manager to give instructions to their employees. This leads to inconsistencies amongst coworkers and customer service. Studies show that lack of understanding can lead to insecurity about job performance and even a high turnover rate. Managers and companies who want to retain quality employees and make sure everyone is on one accord must give clear expectations. Here are some ways to ensure employees understand their responsibilities and perform effectively.

Set goals together. When employees are included in the goal-making process, they have a stronger desire to achieve them. For instance, if there’s a sales goal that the manager wants to reach, having a meeting with their employee for feedback on how to accomplish it makes them work harder as a team to be successful.

Emphasize the importance of employee tasks. In addition to giving a clear description of each task, emphasize why the task is important. For instance, a restaurant employee may have to wash dishes at a specific time. Explain to the employee that the restaurant has a rush hour and they need enough dishes to properly accommodate the customers. When employees understand why their tasks are important, they’ll motivate themselves to perform them in a timely manner. Quality employees are hard to find, especially when companies have trouble articulating their employee job descriptions. By giving an accurate layout of how and why each task must be performed, productivity will go up. Prioritizing job clarity minimizes employee turnover and increases company profit margins.
